Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate surface treatments and fiber types on adhesion properties polylactic acid (PLA) three-dimensional (3D) parts printed on woven fabrics.
Design/methodology/approach
The cotton, flax and jute fabrics were exposed to alkali, hydrogen peroxide, stearic acid and ionic liquid treatments to modify surface characteristics before PLA 3D printing. The modification efficiency was assessed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses. Then, fused deposition modeling (FDM) printer and PLA filament were used for 3D printing onto the untreated and treated fabrics. The adhesion strength between the fabrics and PLA 3D parts were tested according to DIN 53530 via universal tensile tester.
Findings
The fabric structure is effective on adhesion force and greater values were observed for plain weave fabrics. Maximum separation forces were obtained for alkali pretreated fabrics among jute and cotton. Hydrogen peroxide treatment also increased adhesion forces for jute and cotton fabrics while decreasing for flax fabrics. Stearic acid and ionic liquid treatments reduced adhesion forces compared to untreated fabrics. Treatments are effective to alter adhesion via changing surface chemistry, surface morphology and fabric physical properties but display different effects related to fabric material.
Originality/value
This study provides experimental information about effects of different fiber types and surface treatments on adhesion strength of PLA 3D parts. There is limited research about comprehensive observation on 3D printing on cellulosic-woven fabrics.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to study previously prepared and fully characterized chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs) as a starting substrate and microwave initiation technique for grafting acrylic acid (AA). This was done to see the influence of both CNPs with respect to well-dispersed nanosized particles, large surface areas, biodegradability, biocompatibility and reactivity and microwave initiation technique with respect to reduction in organic solvents, toxic chemical initiator and exposer time on exploiting the graft yield % and enhancing water solubility and antibacterial properties.
Design/methodology/approach
For evaluating the best accurate standard metrological method for calculating the graft yield %, the grafting parameters were stated in terms of graft yield percent and measured gravimetrically (based on dry weight method) and titrimetrically (based on carboxyl content). Microwave power, AA and CNPs concentrations and reaction duration were shown to be the most important parameters influencing the grafting process.
Findings
The optimum reaction conditions were obtained when CNPs 1.5 g, AA 150 bows, microwave irradiation power 500 W and reaction duration 120 s were used. Various analytical methods were used to characterize CNPs and poly(AA)–CNPs graft copolymers. According to the findings, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy examination determines the attachment of carboxyl groups to CNPs chains. The thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the copolymers were more thermally stable than CNPs counterparts. Furthermore, the resulting copolymers were shown to have greater water solubility biodegradability resistance and antibacterial properties than CNPs counterpart. Finally, a preliminary mechanism demonstrating all occasions that occur during the polymerization reaction has been proposed.
Originality/value
The advancement addressed here is undertaken using previously prepared and fully characterized CNPs as a green bio-nanocompatible polymer and microwave initiation technique as green and efficient tool with respect to reduction in organic solvents toxic chemical initiator and exposer time for grafting AA.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to prevent mild steel (MS) against corrosion in 0.5 M HCl solution, 2-amino-4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine was used. The effectiveness of the compound as a corrosion inhibitor was studied via electrochemical, surface and theoretical calculation techniques.
Design/methodology/approach
For concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 10.0 mM, almost similar polarization resistances were obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and linear polarization resistance tests. It also investigated inhibitive activity of 2-amino-4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine on the steel surface using scanning electron and atomic force microscope instruments. Langmuir adsorption is the best matched isotherm for the adsorption of the inhibitor to the steel surface.
Findings
EIS method was used to determine inhibition efficiency, which was determined to be 95.7% for 10.0 mM inhibitor containing acid solution. Density functional theory’s predictions for quantum chemistry agreed well with the other experimental results.
Originality/value
The methods used in this study are effective and applicable; the used organic inhibitor is 2-amino-4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine; and protective effectiveness is important, which is crucial for the task of MS corrosion prevention.

Abstract
Purpose
In line with current research efforts to develop eco-friendly strategies for corrosion mitigation, the purpose of this study is to appraise the anti-corrosion potential of selected amino acids on magnesium corrosion in sodium chloride solutions.
Design/methodology/approach
The corrosion inhibition of magnesium in aqueous solutions in the presence of benign, eco-friendly and readily available amino acids (alanine, arginine, histidine, lysine, proline) were evaluated using electrochemical methods.
Findings
Amino acids suppressed magnesium corrosion rate in aqueous sodium chloride solutions. The order of inhibition efficiency (%IE) was as follows: alanine < arginine < histidine < lysine < proline. The open circuit potential shift with respect to the blank was less than 0.085 VSCE, indicating that the amino acids are mixed-type corrosion inhibitors. In addition, the %IE of the amino acids was inversely proportional to the molecular weight. The results obtained indicate that the amino acids can serve as sustainable eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors for magnesium with the best inhibition efficiency attributed to proline with an efficiency of 85.1%.
Originality/value
New information on the application of amino acids as green sustainable corrosion inhibitors is provided herein.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this study is to experimentally analyze the friction and wear responses of different steels to different surface films generated in oil-lubricated tribological contacts.
Design/methodology/approach
Tribological experiments were conducted using a 100Cr6 bearing ball sliding against a V155 carbon steel disk and 316L stainless steel disk, respectively. Lubricants with additives known to form zinc dialkyl-dithiophosphate (ZDDP) or Ca tribofilms were used.
Findings
Both of the ZDDP and Ca tribofilms helped stabilize the friction coefficient of the carbon steel and stainless steel. The ZDDP tribofilm could effectively protect the carbon steel from wear, in contrast to the stainless steel, whereas the wear of both carbon steel and stainless steel could be significantly reduced by the Ca tribofilm. In the case of neither ZDDP nor Ca tribofilms formation, the 100Cr6 ball was worn by the V155 disk and generated a special surface topography. A polishing wear mechanism was proposed to explain the wear of the 100Cr6 ball.
Originality/value
This study clearly shows the different friction and wear responses of steels to the different surface films and the response is dependent on the tested steel.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to apply silver nanoparticles on the cellulosic fabric via a green cross-linking approach to obtain antibacterial textiles. The cellulosic fabrics may provide an ideal enclave for microbial growth due to their biodegradable nature and retention of certain nutrients and moisture usually required for microbial colonization. The application of antibacterial finish on the textile surfaces is usually done via synthetic cross-linkers, which, however, may cause toxic effects and halt the biodegradation process.
Design/methodology/approach
Herein, we incorporated citrate moieties on the cellulosic fabric as eco-friendly crosslinkers for the durable and effective application of nanosilver finish. The nanosilver finish was then applied on the citrate-treated cellulosic fabric under the pad-dry-cure method and characterized the specimens for physicochemical, textile and antibacterial properties.
Findings
The results expressed that the as-prepared silver particles possessed spherical morphology with their average size in the nano range and zeta potential being −40 ± 5 mV. The results of advanced analytical characterization demonstrated the successful application of nanosilver on the cellulosic surface with appropriate dispersibility.
Practical implications
The nanosilver-treated fabric exhibited appropriate textile and comfort and durable broad-spectrum antibacterial activity.
Originality/value
The treated cellulosic fabric expressed that the cross-linking, crystalline behavior, surface chemistry, roughness and amphiphilicity could affect some of its comfort and textile properties yet be in the acceptable range for potential applications in medical textiles and environmental sectors.

Abstract
Purpose
Nature and occurrence of food-borne pathogens in raw and processed food products evolved greatly in the past few years due to new modes of transmission and resistance build-up against sundry micro-/macro-environmental conditions. Assurance of food health and safety thus gained immense importance, for which bio-sensing technology proved very promising in the detection and quantification of food-borne pathogens. Considering the importance, different studies have been performed, and different biosensors have been developed. This study aims to summarize the different biosensors used for the deduction of food-borne pathogens.
Design/methodology/approach
The present review highlights different biosensors developed apropos to food matrices, factors governing their selection, their potential and applicability. The paper discusses some related key challenges and constraints and also focuses on the needs and future research prospects in this field.
Findings
The shift in consumers’ and industries’ perceptions directed the further approach to achieve portable, user and environmental friendly biosensing techniques. Despite of these developments, it was still observed that the comparison among the different biosensors and their categories proved tedious on a single platform; since the food matrices tested, pathogen detected or diagnosed, time of detection, etc., varied greatly and very few products have been commercially launched. Conclusively, a challenge lies in front of food scientists and researchers to maintain pace and develop techniques for efficiently catering to the needs of the food industry.
Research limitations/implications
Biosensors deduction limit varied with the food matrix, type of organism, material of biosensors’ surface, etc. The food matrix itself consists of complex substances, and various types of food are available in nature. Considering the diversity of food there is a need to develop a universal biosensor that can be used for all the food matrices for a pathogen. Further research is needed to develop a pathogen-specific biosensor that can be used for all the food products that may have accuracy to eliminate the traditional method of deduction.
Originality/value
The present paper summarized and categorized the different types of biosensors developed for food-borne pathogens.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the effect of V doping on the microstructure, chemical stability, mechanical and vacuum tribological behavior of sputtered MoS2 coatings.
Design/methodology/approach
The MoS2-V coatings are fabricated via tuning V target current by magnetron sputtering technique. The structural characteristic and elemental content of the coatings are measured by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometer, electron probe X-ray micro-analyzer, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometer. The hardness of the deposited coatings are tested by a nanoindentation technique. The vacuum tribological properties of MoS2-V coatings are studied by a ball-on-disc tribometer.
Findings
Introducing V into the MoS2 coatings results in a more compact microstructure. The hardness of the coatings increases with the doping of V. The MoS2-V coating deposited at a current of 0.2 A obtains the lowest friction coefficient (0.043) under vacuum. As the amount of V doping increases, the wear rate of the coating decreases first and then increases, among which the coating deposited at a current of 0.5 A has the lowest wear rate of 2.2 × 10–6 mm3/N·m.
Originality/value
This work elucidates the role of V doping on the lubrication mechanism of MoS2 coatings in a vacuum environment, and the MoS2-V coating is expected to be applied as a solid lubricant in space environment.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the effect of solder composition and roughness on early wetting behavior and interfacial reaction under atmospheric conditions.
Design/methodology/approach
High-speed photography is used to observe the early wetting and spreading process of the solder on the substrate in real time. The morphology of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) was observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the composition of IMCs micro bumps was determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy.
Findings
With a roughness range of 0.320–0.539 µm, the solder is distributed in an elliptical trilinear pattern along the grinding direction. With a roughness range of 0.029–0.031 µm, the solder spreads in the direction of grinding and perpendicular, forming a perfect circle (except in the case of Sn63Pb37 solder). The effect of three types of solder on early wettability is Sn63Pb37 > Sn96.5Ag3Cu0.5 > Sn. The wetting behavior is consistent with the Rn∼t model. The rapid spreading stage (Stage I) is controlled by the interfacial reaction with n1 values between 2.4 and 4. The slow spreading stage (stage II) is controlled by diffusion with n2 values between 4 and 6.7. The size of Cu6Sn5 formed on a rough substrate is greater than that produced on a smooth substrate.
Originality/value
Investigating the effect of solder composition and roughness on early wettability. This will provide a powerful guide in the field of soft brazing.
