Emerald Publishing's commitment to Accessibility
Emerald Publishing is committed to ensuring that our platform is accessible for all of our users, regardless of their ability or technology. We are constantly working on improving the accessibility and usability of our platform.
Our platform endeavours to conform to level AA of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 and Section 508 Standards of the U.S. Federal Accessibility Standard. These guidelines detail how to make content accessible to a wide range of people with disabilities, including blindness and low vision, deafness and hearing loss, learning disabilities, cognitive limitations, limited movement, speech disabilities, photosensitivity and combinations of these. Conformance with these guidelines enables our platform to be user friendly and accessible for everyone.
Whilst Emerald Insight strives to adhere to WCAG 2.1 and Section 508 Standards for accessibility and usability, the platform is currently under development. As a result, not all aspects of the platform are currently as accessible as we would like them to be.
Through robust internal testing of our platform we have found a number of issues. We are working hard to fix them. At the moment, we are improving the accessibility of our platform in regards to the following WebContent Accessibility 2.1 Guidelines:
|1.3.1 – Info and Relationships (Logical structure)||Tables on article pages are not represented as data tables with "Caption", "Role", etc...|
|2.1.1 – Keyboard (Accessible by keyboard only)||Some components are not accessible by keyboard as they do not currently highlight focus. Example: Saved search delete button, Figures/Tables image close button|
|2.4.4 – Link Purpose (Every link’s purpose is clear from its context)||Some links are not descriptive. Example: On content pages Table/Equation/Figure links are not descriptive|
|3.3.1 – Error Identification (Clearly identify input errors)||Screen reader fails to read on blank search error message "You must enter term(s) to search"|
|4.1.1 – Parsing (No major code errors)||At some places [id] attributes on the page are not unique.|
|4.1.2 – Name, Role, Value (Build all elements for accessibility)||At some places [aria-*] attributes do not have valid values|
|1.1.1 – Non-text Content (Provide text alternatives for non-text content)||Figures, Equations and Tables are not being represented with text alternatives|
|2.4.1 – Bypass Blocks (Provide a ‘Skip to Content’ link)||We don’t have ‘Skip to Content’ links|
|1.4.3 – Contrast (Contrast ratio between text and background is at least 4.5:1)||Some content is not visible clearly with high contrast. Example: Footer with copyright text, Book chapter toc list|
|1.4.4 – Resize Text (Text can be resized to 200% without loss of content or function)||Resize issues on search results page with lengthy Keywords text.|
|1.4.5 – Images of Text (Don’t use images of text)||Equations on article pages are being shown as images|
|2.4.7 – Focus Visible (Ensure keyboard focus is visible and clear)||Some components are not clearly visible with keyboard focus. Example: Keywords on article pages and search result pages.|
