Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the unintended effect of socially responsible human resource management (SRHRM) on employee task performance via three components of role stress: role conflict, role ambiguity and role overload.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was collected from 360 employees who were working in companies in the south of Vietnam and the study hypotheses were tested using structural equation modelling (SEM).

Findings

The results indicate that SRHRM increases role conflict, role ambiguity and role overload, which negatively affect employee task performance.

Practical implications

The key practical implication of our study is that SRHRM may decrease employee task performance via role conflict, role ambiguity and role overload. Managers should be aware of these findings and devise a plan to reduce the role stress that results from implementing SRHRM.

Originality/value

This study provides empirical evidence of the destructive consequences of SRHRM and contributes to a more complete perspective of how SRHRM affects employee performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to investigate whether women exhibit greater risk-aversion behavior than men in investments by estimating the influence of gender on portfolio volatility.

Design/methodology/approach

Data on the volatility observed in the portfolio in the last six months, last twelve months and since the individual became a client at one of the largest financial institutions in Brazil – and in Latin America – that operates in the capital markets are used. In addition to the gender explanatory variable, socioeconomic variables such as age, marital status, suitability, residence in capitals and declared assets are controlled, and multiple linear regression models are controlled.

Findings

The results show that gender is statistically significant in all models estimated to explain the volatility of investment portfolios, saying that women are more risk averse than men.

Originality/value

These findings are useful for the scientific literature that investigates behavioral finance by bringing empirical evidence for Brazil.

Abstract

Introduction: When people need to take decisions, being economic decisions or otherwise, their decisions tend to rely on information the brain has already processed, and this includes the resources that the person has already invested. This is called sunk cost bias in the behavioural economics literature. On the other hand, mental practices could lead to the mental accounting bias, where people allocate a different value to a fixed amount of money, depending on circumstances.

Purpose: In this chapter, both biases mental accounting and sunk cost are investigated for the tourism industry in Turkey.

Methodology: The topic is researched through scenario-based questions and the Chi-square Automatic Interaction Detector (CHAID) method is applied.

Findings: As a result, it could be reported that people, regardless of gender, fall into sunk cost and mental accounting biases in decisions relating to their vacations. Mental accounting biases can be primarily explained using the scenario questions posed rather than gender, education, and income while sunk cost bias is explained by status, ‘being s university student’ and ‘income level’.

Practical implications: Rapid price changes in the tourism industry can disturb consumers who are mental accounting and sunk cost biased. So, they can change their holiday preferences or be dissatisfied with it and give negative feedback.

Every day, our society becomes more complicated, acquiring new features. There are currently several trends in its development, one of which is digitalization. Digitalization of state and municipal administration plays a huge role in the Russian Federation. It contributes to the transformation of state and municipal services into a digital format, increases the quantity and quality of these services for the transition to digital communication of citizens, entrepreneurship, and the state, accelerates the service of citizens, and creates comfortable conditions, which can play a decisive role in developing the Russian Federation. It becomes more functional, convenient, and practical every day. Apparently, there are problems associated with the transformation of the state's activities into a digital format. However, these problems are promptly addressed. One thing is for sure – the development course is set correctly. Digitalization of state and municipal administration is a fairly new regulation sector, which is rapidly developing and requires significant changes in regulatory legal acts to ensure proper security and legal regulation of relations because the value and significance of information increases annually. Digital transformation in the activities of state and municipal bodies makes it possible to establish more trusting communication links with society and increase digital transparency.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to analyse the trait emotional intelligence (TEI) of business students of various programmes. This study aims to answer the question, to what extent these future leaders are uniformly equipped with essential emotional intelligence competences, necessary in the VUCA world.

Design/methodology/approach

The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue) was used to measure TEI of 120 business students. Spearman's and Tau–Kendall's rank correlation coefficients show the strength of the correlation between age and TEI level. The non-parametric Mann–Whitney U test was employed to evaluate the consistency of TEI-level distributions in selected subgroups of respondents.

Findings

Future business leaders and management specialists are unequally prepared to manage teams and organizational change effectively. Their TEI distribution is significantly different regarding the type of programme of study. Students of “social fields” (Management, Communication and Psychology in Business) show higher TEI than students of “analytical fields” (Economics, Finance and Accounting, Logistics). Master's students are characterized by higher TEI compared to undergraduates. However, there were no statistically significant differences in TEI between: full-time and part-time, female and male, as well as working and non-working students.

Practical implications

The results provide valuable guidance for organizations recruiting junior managers and for business universities.

Originality/value

This research was based on a well-established concept of emotional intelligence using a reliable research tool. The obtained results complement the existing research on TEI of various professional groups and provide a precious reference point for future, more in-depth analyses of TEI.

Abstract

Purpose

Investors' behavior in financial markets is often under the influence of various psychological and cognitive factors, as well as personality characteristics. This research explores which behavioral factors and personality traits affect investment decisions and, consequently, investment performance.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey analysis was conducted on a sample of 310 investors in Croatia. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to obtain the results.

Findings

Overconfidence heuristic, prospect theory elements, emotions and stability and plasticity (as big two personality dimensions) positively affect investment decisions, while herding has a negative effect. Investment decisions, observed through the preference for long-term investments, consequently have a positive effect on the investment performance satisfaction.

Originality/value

This research proposes a unique comprehensive model of the effect of numerous different cognitive and psychological behavioral factors on investment decisions. Furthermore, the influence of investment decisions on investment performance is observed simultaneously. Understanding human behavior based on their personal characteristics can help investors to make better investment decisions. Advisors can learn from human behavior and guide their clients in the right direction when it comes to stock investment. Scientists will be able to replicate the model with other data and make comparative analyses.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the factors affecting local government officials’ susceptibility to corrupt behavior among Indonesian local government officials.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a self-report survey and collected 449 questionnaires from 65 village government districts in Central Java province, Indonesia. This study uses a simple and partial correlation to measure the relationship between the susceptibility to corrupt behavior and the independent variables. Binary logistic regression was used to investigate which independent variables were best to explain the local government officials’ susceptibility to corrupt behavior.

Findings

The results show that the factors that best explain corrupt behavior’s susceptibility are the officials’ moral conviction to refrain from corrupt behavior, the perceived opportunity of corruption and the perceived benefit of engaging in such behavior. Further, this study finds an appealing crossover interaction between the perceived cost and social norms on corrupt behavior, such that when officials perceive the cost of engaging in corrupt behavior as low, they will rely more on social norms to decide whether to commit corrupt behavior.

Practical implications

This study provides actionable information for policy formulation. In particular, this study indicates that improvement of internal control can deter corrupt behavior. In addition, the findings of this study also suggest that changing the way we convey the message about corruption might be a promising intervention to mitigate corrupt behavior among government officials. More specifically, a more persuasive-positive-tone message that emphasizes the benefit of not engaging in corrupt behavior or that most people are against corruption can deter corrupt behavior.

Originality/value

The present study provides empirical evidence on the determinants of local government officials’ corrupt behavior from Indonesia’s perspective, which is currently limited.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores how auditors' emotions, specifically negative moods triggered by flight delays, impact auditing quality.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilizing flight delays during audit assignments as a mood indicator, weather conditions at departure airports serve as an instrumental variable to provide a robustness check between flight delays and audit outcomes, employing a two-stage least squares model.

Findings

The findings suggest that such negative moods improve auditing effort and quality, as evidenced by reduced future accounting restatements and increased audit fees. The positive effect of flight delays on auditing quality is consistent across different tests and measures.

Originality/value

This study highlights the significance of auditors' emotional states on their professional performance, indicating a unique angle on auditing quality research by focusing on the emotional well-being of auditors as influenced by external factors such as flight delays.

Abstract

In the stock market, herding behavior occurs when investors mimic the actions of others in their investment decisions. As a result, the market becomes inefficient and speculative bubbles form. This study aims to investigate the relationship between information, overconfidence, market sentiment, experience and national culture, and herding behavior among Malaysian investors. A total of 400 questionnaires are distributed to bank institutions' investors. The survey design based on cross-sectional data is analyzed using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Model. The results indicate that information, market sentiment, experience, and national culture are positively related to herding behavior, while overconfidence has no effect. With this, the government should strengthen regulations to prevent the dissemination of misleading information. Moreover, investors are encouraged to overcome narrow thinking by expanding their understanding of different cultures when making investment decisions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study analyses the role of individuals' objective financial knowledge in shaping preferences for ethical intermediaries and sustainable investments in Italy. Another goal of this study is to assess the impact of individuals' misperceptions about their own financial knowledge and to test for gender-related differences in attitudes towards socially responsible investing (SRI).

Design/methodology/approach

Using nationally representative microdata from the Bank of Italy’s “Italian Literacy and Financial Competence Survey” (IACOFI), the authors use probit models, extended to account for potential endogeneity issues, to assess the causal effects of financial knowledge and confidence on stated preferences for SRI. Empirical models also allow to explicitly assess the moderating role of gender on the effects of financial knowledge and confidence on attitudes towards sustainable investing.

Findings

Results indicate that individuals' preferences for sustainable finance significantly increase with financial knowledge, suggesting that inadequate financial competencies represent a barrier to participation in SRI. At the same time, lack of confidence in one’s own financial knowledge significantly hampers attitudes towards sustainable investments. Furthermore, the authors show that women have a greater preference for sustainable finance than men and point out that financial knowledge and confidence exert heterogenous effects on attitudes towards SRI.

Originality/value

This study provides several contributions to the literature on SRI. First, the authors give evidence of the causal effect of financial knowledge on preferences for both ethical financial intermediaries and sustainable investments. Moreover, this is the first study to investigate the role of financial underconfidence bias in shaping individuals' SRI attitudes. Finally, extending previous research, the authors assess differences in SRI preferences between women and men and provide novel evidence on gender-related heterogeneity in the effects of financial knowledge and underconfidence.
