Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to present the design development and measurement of two aerodynamic slotted X-bands back-to-back planer substrate-integrated rectangular waveguide (SIRWG/SIW) to Microstrip (MS) line transition for satellite and RADAR applications. It facilitates the realization of nonplanar (waveguide-based) circuits into planar form for easy integration with other planar (microstrip) devices, circuits and systems. This paper describes the design of a SIW to microstrip transition. The transition is broadband covering the frequency range of 8–12 GHz. The design and interconnection of microwave components like filters, power dividers, resonators, satellite dishes, sensors, transmitters and transponders are further aided by these transitions. A common planar interconnect is designed with better reflection coefficient/return loss (RL) (S11/S22 ≤ 10 dB), transmission coefficient/insertion loss (IL) (S12/S21: 0–3.0 dB) and ultra-wideband bandwidth on low profile FR-4 substrate for X-band and Ku-band functioning to interconnect modern era MIC/MMIC circuits, components and devices.
Design/methodology/approach
Two series of metal via (6 via/row) have been used so that all surface current and electric field vectors are confined within the metallic via-wall in SIW length. Introduced aerodynamic slots in tapered portions achieve excellent impedance matching and tapered junctions with SIW are mitered for fine tuning to achieve minimum reflections and improved transmissions at X-band center frequency.
Findings
Using this method, the measured IL and RLs are found in concord with simulated results in full X-band (8.22–12.4 GHz). RLC T-equivalent and p-equivalent electrical circuits of the proposed design are presented at the end.
Practical implications
The measurement of the prototype has been carried out by an available low-cost X-band microwave bench and with a Keysight E4416A power meter in the microwave laboratory.
Originality/value
The transition is fabricated on FR-4 substrate with compact size 14 mm × 21.35 mm × 1.6 mm and hence economical with IL lie within limits 0.6–1 dB and RL is lower than −10 dB in bandwidth 7.05–17.10 GHz. Because of such outstanding fractional bandwidth (FBW: 100.5%), the transition could also be useful for Ku-band with IL close to 1.6 dB.

Abstract
Purpose
A novel low profile frequency selective surface (FSS) with a band-stop response at 10 GHz is demonstrated. The purpose of this designed FSS structure is to reject the X-band (8-12 GHz) for the application of shielding. The proposed FSS structure having the unit cell dimension of 8 × 8 mm2, the miniaturization of the FSS unit cell in terms of λ0 is 0.266 λ0 × 0.266 λ0, where λ0 is free space wavelength. The designed FSS provides 4 GHz bandwidth with insertion loss of 15 dB. The transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes of the proposed design are same because of polarization independent characteristics and hold the angularly stable frequency response for both TE and TM mode polarization. Both the simulation and measurement results are in good agreement to each other.
Design/methodology/approach
The proposed FSS design contains square-shaped PEC material, which is placed on the substrate and the shape of the circle and rectangle is etched over the PEC material. The PEC material of the patch dimension is 0.0175 mm. The substrate used for the proposed design is FR4 lossy with the thickness of 0.8 mm and permittivity εr = 4.3 having a loss tangent of 0.02.
Findings
To find a new design and miniaturized FSS structure is discussed.
Originality/value

Abstract
In this paper studies on the lab formulated fritless silver thick film paste with two different binder compositions that have been used to fabricate λ/2 microstrip rejection filter in the X and Ku band are reported. These have been compared with ESL (USA) paste and copper thin film metallization for the same circuit. The thick film circuits were overlayed with TiO2 thick film of different thickness and changes in the characteristics studied. In the X band, the Q of the filter improves with overlay and is also dependent on the Ag paste formulation, whereas in the Ku band there are no thick film paste dependent properties observed due to overlay. Thickness of overlay and metallization paste formulation dependent factors should be taken into consideration during fabrication of high density and multi‐layer microwave integrated circuits.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to design a dual mode X-band substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass filter in the conventional SIW structure. A pair of back-to-back square and split ring resonator is introduced in the single-layer SIW bandpass filter. The various coupling configurations of SIW bandpass filter using split square ring slot resonator is designed to obtain dual resonant mode in the passband. It is shown that the measured results agree with the simulated results to meet compact size, lower the transmission coefficient, better reflection coefficient, sharp sideband rejection and minimal group delay.
Design/methodology/approach
A spurious suppression of wideband response is suppressed using an open stub in the transmission line. The width and length of the stub are tuned to suppress the wideband spurs in the stopband. The measured 3 dB bandwidth is from 8.76 to 14.24 GHz with a fractional bandwidth of 48.04% at a center frequency of 11.63 GHz, 12.59 GHz. The structure is analyzed using the equivalent circuit model, and the simulated analysis is based on an advanced design system software.
Findings
This paper discusses the characteristics of resonator below the waveguide cut-off frequency with their working principles and applications. Considering the difficulties in combining the resonators with a metallic waveguide, a new guided wave structure – the SIW is designed, which is synthesized on a planar substrate with linear periodic arrays of metallized via based on the printed circuit board.
Originality/value
This study has investigated the wave propagation problem of the SIW loaded by square ring slot-loaded resonator. The electric dipole nature of the resonator has been used to achieve a forward passband in a waveguide environment. The proposed filters have numerous advantages such as high-quality factor, low insertion loss, easy to integrate with the other planar circuits and, most importantly, compact size.

Purpose
This paper aims to state the configuration of the proposed antenna which is competent to many networks such as LTE and X band applications. The experimental study encountered the significance of the proposed antenna.
Design/methodology/approach
A novel compact Kuznets curve with parabola-shaped quad-band notched antenna is demonstrated in this paper. The presented prototype is ascertained on a composite material composed of woven fiberglass cloth with an epoxy resin binder. The resulting ultra-wideband antenna ranges 3.1–3.54 GHz, 5.17–5.51 GHz, 5.74–6.43 GHz and 6.79–7.60 GHz. To avoid the frequency bands which cause UWB interference, the projected antenna has been incorporated with slotted patch. The proposed antenna design is attained in four steps. The simple circular patch antenna model with defected ground plane is subjected to stepwise progression by including parabola-shaped slot and U shaped slot on the patch to attain four notched bands.
Findings
This projected antenna possesses an optimal bond among simulated and measured outcomes, which is more suitable for the quad notched band applications. Substrate analysis is done by varying substrate material, and notch behavior is presented. The proposed method’s optimum performance in metrics such as return loss, voltage standing wave ratio and radiation pattern varies its frequency range from 2.56 to 7.6 GHz.
Originality/value
The antenna adaptation of the defected ground plane has achieved through the quad notched band with operating frequency ranges 2.56 to 7.6 GHz and with eliminated frequency ranges 3.55–5.16 GHz, 5.52–5.73 GHz, 6.44–6.78 GHz and 7.66–10.6 GHz.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this study is to determine the fracture behavior of wool felt and fabric based epoxy composites and their responses to electromagnetic waves.
Design/methodology/approach
Notched and unnotched tensile tests of composites made of wool only and hybridized with a glass fiber layer were carried out, and fracture behavior and toughness at macro scale were determined. They were exposed to electromagnetic waves between 8 and 18 GHz frequencies using two horn antennas.
Findings
The keratin and lignin layer on the surface of the wool felt caused lower values to be obtained compared to the mechanical values given by pure epoxy. However, the use of wool felt in the symmetry layer of the laminated composite material provided higher mechanical values than the composite with glass fiber in the symmetry layer due to the mechanical interlocking it created. The use of wool in fabric form resulted in an increase in the modulus of elasticity, but no change in fracture toughness was observed. As a result of the electromagnetic analysis, it was also seen in the electromagnetic analysis that the transmittance of the materials was high, and the reflectance was low throughout the applied frequency range. Hence, it was concluded that all of the manufactured materials could be used as radome material over a wide band.
Practical implications
Sheep wool is an easy-to-supply and low-cost material. In this paper, it is presented that sheep wool can be evaluated as a biocomposite material and used for radome applications.
Originality/value
The combined evaluation of felt and fabric forms of a natural and inexpensive reinforcing element such as sheep wool and the combined evaluation of fracture mechanics and electromagnetic absorption properties will contribute to the evaluation of biocomposites in aviation.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate the design parameters of an optimal SAR satellite sensor on remote sensing missions. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite missions, with the advantages of using all weather conditions, repetition of a pass, high spatial resolution and adequate balance, can not only provide timely coverage in disaster areas but also environmental monitoring and accident assessment. It also provides resources. The product of images depicts the needs of government organizations not only before and after the crisis but also during the crisis. Therefore, low-cost SAR satellite loading efforts have begun with SAR satellites and key technologies.
Design/methodology/approach
Information about the basic parameters of SAR satellites such as antenna dimensions, image resolution, pulse and relationship repetition, as well as the tradeoff between required parameters and design needs’ evaluation was achieved. In this paper, the tradeoff methods between some technical requirements are presented, and the limitations in the design of a SAR prototype sensor in the X band are examined. Diagrams can provide a complete overview of the predicted fluctuations and tradeoffs between them for a designer.
Findings
Analysis of findings reveals that data transmission rate with PRFmin is independent of antenna incidence angle, but in contrast, it is dependent on PRFmax, and afterward its relationship was analyzed. Drawn diagrams approved presented design and calculations. Other important parameters in the design of the SAR sensor such as antenna dimensions, tilt angle, amplitude and resolution of azimuth can be achieved as significant elements in systematic design according to the results of this paper. Regarding the displayed diagrams, it can be understood that the angle of the antenna should not be from 15 to 60 degrees.
Originality/value
This paper provides an overview of the new observational capability offered by the second generation of SAR sensors, especially in the field of remote sensing applications. The built-in antenna is built for the small SAR sensor. This array antenna is designed with a parallel screen to work in X-frequency with vertical polarity.

Purpose
This paper aims to study the structural, electrical and microwave properties of (Sr0.6Ca0.4) (CoyMn1−y) O3 (0.2 ≤ y ≤ 1.0) thick-film ceramics.
Design/methodology/approach
The thick films of (Sr0.6Ca0.4) (CoyMn1−y) O3 (0.2 ≤ y ≤ 1.0) on the alumina substrate have been delineated using screen printing technique. The structural analysis was carried out using an X-ray diffraction method and scanning electron microscopy. The direct current (DC) electrical resistivity is measured using a two-probe method. Microwave absorption was studied in the 8-18 GHz frequency range by using the Waveguide Reflectometer Method. The permittivity and permeability in the 8-18 GHz frequency range were measured by using Voltage Standing Wave Ratio slotted section method.
Findings
The thick films have orthorhombic perovskite structure with dominant (020) plane. By using first-principle calculation method, theoretical and experimental lattice parameter and cell volume of (Sr0.6Ca0.4) (CoyMn1−y) O3 are matched with each other. The cobalt content changes the morphology from plates to needles. The DC electrical resistivity increases with increase in Co content and decreases with increase in temperature. (Sr0.6Ca0.4) (CoyMn1−y) O3 thick film shows 75 per cent microwave absorption both in the X band and Ku band. The microwave permittivity and permeability decreases with increase in frequency and Co content.
