Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a knowledge-enabled digital twin for smart design (KDT-SD) of aircraft assembly line (AAL) to enhance the AAL efficiency, performance and visibility. Modern AALs usually need to have capabilities such as digital-physical interaction and self-evaluation that brings significant challenges to traditional design method for AAL. The digital twin (DT) combining with reusable knowledge, as the key technologies in this framework, is introduced to promote the design process by configuring, understanding and evaluating design scheme.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed KDT-SD framework is designed with the introduction of DT and knowledge. First, dynamic design knowledge library (DDK-Lib) is established which could support the various activities of DT in the entire design process. Then, the knowledge-driven digital AAL modeling method is proposed. At last, knowledge-based smart evaluation is used to understand and identify the design flaws, which could further improvement of the design scheme.

Findings

By means of the KDT-SD framework proposed, it is possible to apply DT to reduce the complexity and discover design flaws in AAL design. Moreover, the knowledge equips DT with the capacities of rapid modeling and smart evaluation that improve design efficiency and quality.

Originality/value

The proposed KDT-SD framework can provide efficient design of AAL and evaluate the design performance in advance so that the feasibility of design scheme can be improved as much as possible.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose is to understand the importance of brand experience in the Taiwan hotel branding process; also, this study is to investigate the moderating effect of brand experience on the relationship between brand positioning and non-financial brand performance in Taiwan upscale hotels, focusing on mainland Chinese tourists.

Design/methodology/approach

The structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis was used to conduct questionnaire analysis. This study examined data collected from Chinese tourists who stayed at Taiwan upscale hotels.

Findings

The brand experience of an upscale hotel brand can affect its brand image, product attributes, brand loyalty and customer satisfaction. By investigating the moderating effect of brand experience, the study revealed the brand image perceptions of hotel guests with a positive brand experience to significantly influence non-financial brand performance. The product attribute perceptions of hotel guests with a more positive brand experience were also found to have a more significant effect on nonfinancial brand performance.

Originality/value

In the highly competitive hotel industry, the application of brand experience to marketing practice has drawn much industry attention. There is a strong possibility that upscale hotel companies will eventually find value in adopting the measurement instruments and suggestions presented here to assess and guide their marketing practices.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate diethylenetriamine (DETA) as an inhibitor on Q235 (Gr. D) steel in ammonia flue gas desulfurization (AFGD) system.

Design/methodology/approach

This research was carried out by weight loss, electrochemical measurements, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry. The effects of DETA on crystallization of ammonium sulfate and its co-crystallization were also investigated by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy.

Findings

The inhibition efficiency of DETA reached a maximum value of 98.96 per cent. DETA is postulated to adsorb on Q235 steel surface, resulting in the formation of a protective film by the accumulation of many flat particles, and the thickness of protective film is 8 μm. DETA had no effect on the crystallization of ammonium sulfate product.

Originality/value

DETA can be used in AFGD system as an inhibitor to protect the equipment well.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to address research gaps by constructing critical success factors (CSFs) in the context of green hotel investment in Taiwan. It contributes to the domain knowledge to cultivate Taiwan’s green hotel development in the future.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors secured 20 prominent green hotel management/owners/architects as crucial informants. The first stage used the Delphi method to collect expert opinions (i.e. CSFs) and the second stage applied the analytic hierarchy process to analyze the importance of CSFs.

Findings

The results show that the “financial investment benefits” is considered the most crucial success factor for the green hotel investment. However, to balance long-term economic development with environmental impact, green hotel investors should consider other aspects of the research to sustain future financial performance returns.

Research limitations/implications

Further studies should consider regional characteristics to accommodate geographic/social differences and hotel types to explore possible CSFs for the green hotel investment. The authors suggest including panel experts from government officials and prominent scholars to represent a broader but different view on subject matters. They also offer implications for investors’ governmental policies, hotelier cognition and customer-related aspects in green hotel investment.

Originality/value

This study built a hierarchical framework based on the CSF concept by evaluating priority differences between hotel management and hotel owners/architects. Such findings help investors’ effective decision-making through considering factors’ relative importance for green hotel investments.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to use the polynomial approximation method based on the Pascal polynomial basis for obtaining the numerical solutions of partial differential equations. Moreover, this method does not require establishing grids in the computational domain.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the authors present a meshfree method based on Pascal polynomial expansion for the numerical solution of the Sobolev equation. In general, Sobolev-type equations have several applications in physics and mechanical engineering.

Findings

The authors use the Crank-Nicolson scheme to discrete the time variable and the Pascal polynomial-based (PPB) method for discretizing the spatial variables. But it is clear that increasing the value of the final time or number of time steps, will bear a lot of costs during numerical simulations. An important purpose of this paper is to reduce the execution time for applying the PPB method. To reach this aim, the proper orthogonal decomposition technique has been combined with the PPB method.

Originality/value

The developed procedure is tested on various examples of one-dimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional versions of the governed equation on the rectangular and irregular domains to check its accuracy and validity.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to obtain accurate numerical solutions of two-dimensional (2-D) and 3-dimensional (3-D) Klein–Gordon–Schrödinger (KGS) equations.

Design/methodology/approach

The use of linear barycentric interpolation differentiation matrices facilitates the computation of numerical solutions both in 2-D and 3-D space within reasonable central processing unit times.

Findings

Numerical simulations corroborate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

Originality/value

Linear barycentric interpolation method is applied to 2-D and 3-D KGS equations for the first time, and good results are obtained.

Abstract

Purpose

Bumpless Cu/SiO2 hybrid bonding, which this paper aims to, is a key technology of three-dimensional (3D) high-density integration to promote the integrated circuits industry’s continuous development, which achieves the stacks of chips vertically connected via through-silicon via. Surface-activated bonding (SAB) and thermal-compression bonding (TCB) are used, but both have some shortcomings. The SAB method is overdemanding in the bonding environment, and the TCB method requires a high temperature to remove copper oxide from surfaces, which increases the thermal budget and grossly damages the fine-pitch device.

Design/methodology/approach

In this review, methods to prevent and remove copper oxidation in the whole bonding process for a lower bonding temperature, such as wet treatment, plasma surface activation, nanotwinned copper and the metal passivation layer, are investigated.

Findings

The cooperative bonding method combining wet treatment and plasma activation shows outstanding technological superiority without the high cost and additional necessity of copper passivation in manufacture. Cu/SiO2 hybrid bonding has great potential to effectively enhance the integration density in future 3D packaging for artificial intelligence, the internet of things and other high-density chips.

Originality/value

To achieve heterogeneous bonding at a lower temperature, the SAB method, chemical treatment and the plasma-assisted bonding method (based on TCB) are used, and surface-enhanced measurements such as nanotwinned copper and the metal passivation layer are also applied to prevent surface copper oxide.

Abstract

Purpose

Little previous research has investigated the relationships among strategic orientations, supply chain integration and firm performance. The purpose of this study is to advance a research model that examines the direct and indirect effects of strategic orientations via supply chain integration on firm performance in the Saudi transitional context.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on data collected from a survey using questionnaires completed by 187 top management members of Saudi firms from different sectors. To analyse the data and test the proposed hypotheses, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling were conducted using the AMOS statistical analysis package.

Findings

Results show that both market orientation and supply chain integration have a significant positive direct effect on Saudi firm performance. They also reveal that supply chain integration fully mediates the effect of technology orientation on firm performance, while partially mediating the effect of market orientation on firm performance.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the literature by showing how SCI could serve as an organizational capability that links strategic resources to firm performance. The main limitation of this study is that it was not possible to generalize the findings. Future research perspectives were proposed to address this limitation and add new insights to the field.

Practical implications

The results could help decision-makers in Saudi firms choose the right strategic orientations and aid them in integrating their supply chains by sharing the necessary information and coordinating operations with key partners to enhance their firms' performance.

Originality/value

This study is one of the first to conduct such an investigation in the Saudi context. The study simultaneously examines the role of supply chain integration in linking strategic orientations to firm performance and fills a current research gap in such a transitional context.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a novel high speed impact testing method for evaluating the effects of low temperatures on eutectic and lead‐free solder joints. Interfacial cracking failure of Sn‐based and Pb‐free solders at subzero temperatures is of significant concern for electronic assemblies that operate in harsh environments.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a newly designed low temperature control system coupled with an Instron micro‐impact testing machine, which offers a package level test for solder bumps, and that is used at subzero temperature ranges as low as −40°C. This study examined the failure characteristics of 63Sn‐37Pb (Sn37Pb) and 96.5Sn‐3Ag‐0.5Cu (SAC305) solder joints at temperatures ranging from room temperature (R.T.) to −40°C, and at impact speeds of 1 m/s.

Findings

Three types of failure mode were identified: M1 interfacial fracture with no residual solder remaining on the pad (interfacial cracking); M2 interfacial fracture with residual solder persisting on the pad (mixed mode failure); and M3 solder ball fracture (bulk solder cracking). The experimental results indicated that the energy to peak load for both types of solders decreased significantly, by approximately 35 percent to 38 percent when the test temperature was reduced from R.T. to −40°C. In addition, the peak load of the Sn37Pb solder joint increased noticeably with a decreasing test temperature. However, the peak load of the SAC305 specimen remained virtually unchanged with a reduction in the temperature. The Sn37Pb solder joints failed in an M3 failure mode under all the considered testing temperatures. The SAC305 solder joints displayed both M1 and M2 failure modes at R.T.; however, they failed almost exclusively in M1 mode at the lowest test temperature of −40°C.

Originality/value

This paper presents a novel technique for evaluating high‐speed impact strength and energy absorbance of Sn‐based and Pb‐free solders at the chip level within a low temperature control system. To overcome the drawbacks experienced in other studies, this study focused specifically on cryo‐impact testing systems and the performed experimental steps to improve the accuracy of post‐test analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to provide additional insights on the association between real earnings management (REM) and crash risk, particularly from the perspective of an emerging market economy. It also examines the moderation role that internal and external corporate governance may play in this area.

Design/methodology/approach

Relying on archival data from the RESSET and CSMAR databases over a timeframe from 2010 to 2018 of China listed company, the authors test the hypotheses by regressing common measures of crash risk on the treatment variable (REM) and crash risk control variables identified in the prior crash risk literature. The authors also introduce monitoring proxies (internal controls as an internal governance and institutional ownership as an external governance) and assess how effective internal and external governance moderate the relation between REM and stock price crash risk.

Findings

The results suggest firms with higher REM have a significantly greater stock price crash risk, and that this association is mitigated by external monitoring. That is, greater institutional ownership, particularly pressure insensitive owners, mitigates the impact of REM on stock price crash risk. However, internal control does not mitigate the association between REM and stock price crash risk.

Originality/value

Following the passage of the Sarbanes–Oxley (SOX) Act, prior research has documented an increase in the use of REM and a positive association between REM and cash risk. The authors demonstrate that they persist in one of the largest emerging markets where institutional regulations, market conditions and corporate behaviors are different from those in developed markets. Also, the assessment of the moderation effect of internal and external governance mechanisms could have meaningful implications for investors and regulators in Chinese and other emerging markets.
