Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to present reports on fabrication of silicon (Si) nanowires (NWs). The study consists of microwire formation on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) that was fabricated using a top-down approach which involved conventional photolithography coupled with shallow anisotropic etching.

Design/methodology/approach

A 5-inch p-type silicon-on-insulator (SOI) coated with 250nm layer and Photoresist (PR) with thickness of 400nm is coated in order to make pattern transfer via binary mask, after the exposure and development, a resist pattern between 3 μm-5 μm were obtained, Oxygen plasma spreen was used to reduce the size of the PR to 800 μm, after this, the wafer with 800 μm was loaded into SAMCO inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-RIE and got silicoon microwire was obtained. Next, the sample was put into an oxidation furnace for 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes and the sample was removed and dipped into a buffered oxide etch solution for five minutes to remove all the SiO2 ashes.

Findings

The morphological characterization was conducted using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. At terminal two, gold electrodes which were designated as source and drain were fabricated on top of individual NWs using conventional lithography electrical and chemical response. Once the trimming process has been completed, the device's current–voltage (I-V) characteristic was measured by using a Keithley 4200 semiconductor parameter analyser. Devices with different width of wires approximately 20, 40, 60 and 80 nm were characterized. The wire current variation as a function of the pH variation in voltage was investigated: pH monitoring for variations of pH values between 5 and 9.

Originality/value

This paper provides useful information on novel and yet simple cost-effective fabrication of SiNW; as such, it should be of interest to a broad readership, especially those interested in micro/nanofabrication.

Abstract

Purpose

Nanogap electrodes have important applications in power saving devices, electrochemical sensors and dielectric detections of biomolecules. The purpose of this paper is to report on the fabrication and characterization of polysilicon nanogap patterning using novelties technique.

Design/methodology/approach

Polysilicon material is used to fabricate the nanogap structure and gold is used for the electrode and two chrome masks are used to complete this work; the first mask for the nanogap pattern and a second mask for the electrode. The method is based on the control of the coefficients (temperature and time) with an improved pattern size resolution thermal oxidation.

Findings

Physical characterization by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrates such nanogap electrodes could be produced with high reproducibility and precision. Electrical characterization shows that nanogap enhanced the sensitivity of the device by increase the capacitance and the conductivity as well. They have also good efficiency of power consumption with high insulation properties.

Originality/value

With this technique, there are no principal limitations to fabricating nanostructures with different layouts down to several different nanometer dimensions. The paper documents the fabrication of nanogaps electrodes on a polysilicon, using low‐cost techniques such as vacuum deposition and conventional lithography. Polysilicon is a low‐cost materials and has desirable properties for semiconductor applications. A method of preparing a nanogap electrode according to the present innovation has an advantage of providing active surface that can easily be modified for immobilizations of biomolecules.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to systematically study the electrical properties of 5‐, 42‐ and 75‐nm gap polysilicon structures to evaluate the potentiality of these structures to be used in biomolecular sensing devices.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors previously reported the fabrication and morphological characterization of these structures. In this report, they electrically probed the presence of nanogap through current measurement. The effects of electrolytes on the capacitance profiles of these structures were systematically studied with air, water and various dilutions of phosphate buffer saline.

Findings

An increment in capacitance was found with the increment in electrolyte concentration. Improvement in current flow, capacitance, permittivity, and conductivity were observed with the smaller size nanogaps, suggesting their applications in low power consuming devices.

Originality/value

Since nanogap‐based dielectric biosensing devices need to be operated with a low level of current to avoid biomolecular damage, these structures should have potential applications in dielectric‐based biomolecular detection using a low cost dielectric analyser.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to fabricate a transducer-based TiO2 interdigitated microelectrodes with various gap sizes. The most stable electrical properties have been selected for Escherichia. coli O157:H7 DNA detection.

Design/methodology/approach

Sol-gel was used to synthesize TiO2 nanoparticles. Lift-off photolithography process was used for fabrication of interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) and dry-state DNA detection was done using a Picoammeter.

Findings

TiO2 nanoparticles IDEs with 16-um gap size is able to detect DNA of E. coli in a dry state.

Originality/value

This paper describes IDEs for dry-state detection of E. coli O157:H7 DNA. The technique presented in this paper ensures the high uniformity of nanoparticle deposition on the finger electrode.

Abstract

Purpose

The acceptance of Islamic banking services by non-Muslim customers is not promising in the Malaysian context. Thus, this study aims to examine the effect factors that may motivate this customer group to adopt the Islamic banking services in the Malaysian context.

Design/methodology/approach

A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data through google docs from 188 respondents. Structural equation modelling partial least squares (PLS-SEM) was used to analyze the hypothetical model of this study.

Findings

The result of this study found that knowledge about Islamic banking exerts a positive effect on non-Muslim beliefs (attitudinal, control and norm). Moreover, this study found a significant relationship between attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control with non-Muslim Intention towards Islamic banking services. Furthermore, the mediating effect of attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control was supported.

Originality/value

This is a pioneer study that contributes to the consumer behavior literature by extending the theory of planned behavior by incorporating knowledge in the model. In addition, this study develops comparatively new relationships, practically the mediation role of beliefs (attitudinal, control and norm) between knowledge and intention.

Malaysia is still very much lacking behind in green building developments as compared to other countries such as Australia, Japan, and Singapore. Nevertheless, in order to strengthen the development of green building in Malaysia, government has provided and offers several initiatives to the construction key players in implementing green building such as investment tax allowance for the purchase of green technology equipment and income tax exemption on the use of green technology services and system, etc. Despite of all the incentives introduce, the implementation of green building construction still does not boast as expected and still relatively low. Therefore, this study will identify barriers, issues, and challenges faced by construction key players in implementing green building concepts especially related to green building incentives in their project. The opinions and views of related parties in building industry were obtained from structured interviews and questionnaires to key personnel in construction industry to give a clearer picture of the current situation. This study is succeeded in identifying the barriers and challenges, which mainly categorised into financial incentives, fiscal incentives, and structural incentives. The main issues identified are excessive cost of construction, tax exemption is limited and only for qualified person and legislative challenges. Nonetheless, this study also suggests various ways to overcome the barriers in promoting green building concept in Malaysia towards greener environment.

Abstract

The current challenges experienced by all nations promote the trade-off between the increase in economic performance and the protected environment. The investigation based on the energy economy has become an irreplaceable topic to determine the correct path for minimizing the trade-off cost. Within this scope, this study has been performed to investigate the causality nexus between the exports indicators (aggregated exports and the ICT exports) and the energy consumption (renewable and nonrenewable energy consumption of the selected five emerging countries. The Dumitrescu–Hurlin panel causality analysis is performed on the annual data between 2000 and 2014. As a consequence of the evidence, it is documented that there are various causality relationships between the exports and the energy consumption indicators in the light of the performed analysis at different lags. However, the role of nonrenewable energy consumption is more active in the economies of the considered countries. According to the evidence, it is recommended for the emerging countries to invest and allocate more funds to renewable energy resources to diminish the role of nonrenewable energy resources in the economy.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic review on technical findings and discuss the feasibility and future of gold (Au) wirebonding in microelectronics packaging. It also aims to study and compare the cost, quality and wear-out reliability performance of Au wirebonding with respect to other wire alloys such as copper (Cu) and silver (Ag) wirebonding. This paper discusses the influence of wire type on the long-term reliability tests.

Design/methodology/approach

Literature reviews are conducted based on cost and wire selections of Au, Cu or Ag wirebonding. Detailed wear-out failure findings and wire selection with cost considerations are presented in this review paper. The future and the status of Au wirebonding in microelectronics packaging are discussed in this paper.

Findings

This paper briefly reviews selected aspects of the Au ball and other alternative bonding options, focusing on reliability performance, and discusses the future of Au wirebonding in the near future in semiconductor packaging.

Practical implications

The paper reveals the technical considerations when choosing the wire types for future microelectronics packaging.

Originality/value

The in-depth technical review and strategies of the selection of wire types (Au, Cu or the latest Ag alloy) in microelectronics packaging are discussed in this paper based on previous literature studies.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss a nanoscale biosensor and its signal analysis algorithms.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, five nanoscale biosensors are reviewed, namely, silicon nanowire field-effect-transistor biosensors, polysilicon nanogap capacitive biosensors, nanotube amperometric biosensors, gold nanoparticle-based electrochemical biosensors and quantum dot-based electrochemical biosensors.

Findings

Each biosensor produces a different output signal depending on its electrical characteristics. Five signal analysers are studied, with most of the existing signal analyser analyses based on the amplitude of the signal. Based on the analysis, auto-threshold peak detection is proposed for further work.

Originality/value

Suitability of the signal processing algorithm to be applied to nano-biosensors was reported.

Abstract

The current chapter proposes a theoretical framework to assess the sustainability of economic growth in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) States. The authors integrate insights from endogenous growth models and consider the unique socioeconomic characteristics of the GCC region to provide a comprehensive and tailored approach to understanding the determinants of economic growth and formulating effective policy measures to foster sustainable development and growth. This chapter highlights the environmental challenges faced by GCC; based on this, the authors suggested indicators to construct a theoretical framework (Economic Growth, Climatic Indicators, Energy Indicators, Social Indicators, and Economic Resources Indicators). The authors propose that policymakers and researchers in GCC States should take these factors into account when devising policies or conducting research aimed at fostering sustainable economic growth. Overall, this chapter presents significant insights for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders involved in promoting the sustainable economic advancement of the GCC States.
