Abstract

Purpose

Service robots offering low-contact services are trending in the hospitality industry. Nevertheless, there is limited empirical research on consumer perspectives. Using the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) model, this study aims to investigate consumer acceptance of service robots and explores the relationships among stimuli (coolness and affinity), organisms (utilitarian and hedonic value) and responses (behavioral intention).

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a purposive sampling method and conducts a questionnaire survey in restaurants with service robots in Taiwan. A total of 554 valid responses are analyzed, and confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling are performed.

Findings

The findings reveal that coolness and affinity positively influence utilitarian and hedonic values, whereas utilitarian and hedonic values positively affect behavioral intention. Additionally, these values mediate how coolness and affinity impact behavioral intentions, showing that coolness more significantly influences hedonic value, while affinity has a greater effect on utilitarian value.

Originality/value

As a theoretical basis, the SOR model examines the relationships among stimulus, organism and response. This study comprehensively investigates the factors influencing consumer perception toward service robots, testing the applicability of this theory in the food and beverage industry and expanding its practical value. Additionally, the author introduces the “fit” concept, indicating that, for maximum effect, coolness pairs best with hedonic value and affinity with utilitarian value.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the impact of augmented reality (AR) technologies on consumer information processing and value perceptions in physical stores. Specifically, it investigates how the vividness, novelty and interactivity of AR shape utilitarian and hedonic value perceptions, and influence consumer purchase and continuance behaviour.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used the store intercept survey method at 15 retail outlets across four metro cities in India, representing nine prominent retail brands deploying AR technologies. The data collected (n = 650) were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis.

Findings

Major findings confirm a significant effect of vividness, novelty and interactivity on utilitarian and hedonic value perceptions of in-store AR experiences of customers in physical stores. Hedonic value was found to affect continuance intention but not purchase intention, while utilitarian value was found to affect purchase intention but not continuance.

Research limitations/implications

This study extends the stimulus–organism–response model’s application to AR in physical stores by integrating the impact of vividness, novelty and interaction on both utilitarian and hedonic values and revealing their significance in influencing purchase intentions and continuance.

Practical implications

Major findings advise retailers to increase AR experience adoption in stores and illustrate the process through which purchase and continuance intentions may be influenced.

Originality/value

This is one of the few studies that explore the impact of AR on consumer attitudes and intentions in physical stores. In addition, the study explores the effect of AR tools as a process that passes through value perceptions and then affects the consumer.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to examine the impact of augmented reality (AR) on users' tour experience and psychological well-being in museums. The study utilizes the Information System (IS) Success Model and the Perceived Value Theory to investigate the relationships between AR quality, content quality, system quality, vividness, utilitarian value, hedonic value, tour experience, and psychological well-being.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopts a quantitative research approach and surveys 286 visitors at the Wuhan Natural History Museum. The collected data is analyzed using PLS-SEM to test the proposed model.

Findings

The study finds that content quality, system quality, and vividness significantly influence utilitarian and hedonic value. Utilitarian and hedonic values mediate the relationship between AR quality and tour experience and psychological well-being, with hedonic value having a greater impact. Utilitarian value positively influences customers' hedonic value, while tour experience positively influences customers' psychological well-being.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing literature by applying the Information System Success Model and Perceived Value Theory to explore the impact of AR on users' tour experience and psychological well-being in museums. It provides empirical evidence supporting the importance of content quality and perceived value in promoting AR adoption and use. The findings add value to the field of augmented reality research and offer practical implications for AR service providers.

Abstract

Purpose

Online shopping has recently been evolving more toward the subject area of collaborative online shopping (COS), and customer satisfaction is one of the key determinants for the success of COS. In this study, we investigate the effect of product type and gender and their interaction with customer satisfaction through user involvement in a collaborative online shopping context.

Design/methodology/approach

We developed a lab experiment with a mixed two-by-two factorial design to test the proposed research model. We chose gender (male versus female) as the between-subjects factor and product type (utilitarian product versus hedonic product) as the within-subjects factor.

Findings

The obtained results indicate that collaborative shopping may require group members to be more involved for a hedonic product than a utilitarian product. When collaboratively shopping for utilitarian products, male groups tend to show a higher level of involvement than female groups. In contrast, female groups show a higher level of involvement than male groups when collaboratively shopping for hedonic products. Furthermore, our results indicate that greater involvement in COS may lead to higher satisfaction.

Social implications

Websites that sell hedonic products should first adopt the design elements that support COS. Meanwhile, online sellers should be aware that the gender gap still exists as online shopping evolves toward social online shopping. In addition, COS websites should provide more design elements (e.g. co-browsing, avatar embodiment, video chat and voting tools) to stimulate user involvement.

Originality/value

In this paper, we employ the theory of consumption values, which decomposes COS value into the utilitarian and hedonic dimensions, as a theoretical foundation to investigate the effect of product type and gender together as well as their interactions in the COS context. The obtained findings may provide various insights and empirical evidence to improve the understanding of how to target male and female customers across different product types in the COS context.

Purpose

The objective of this study is to examine how perceived augmentation of virtual makeup influences consumers’ perceived value (utilitarian and hedonic value).

Design/methodology/approach

This research conducts an empirical study, and investigates 474 respondents.

Findings

The results show that perceived augmentation positively influences utilitarian and hedonic value. The wow-effect mediates the impact of perceived augmentation on utilitarian value. Immersion mediates the impact of perceived augmentation on two types of perceived value. Perceived ease of use moderates the influence of perceived augmentation on utilitarian value. Recreational shopper does not moderate the effect of perceived augmentation on hedonic value.

Practical implications

The study provides practical implications for beauty e-retailers.

Originality/value

This study examines the effect of perceived augmentation, supplements the literature on virtual makeup and AR technology application and enriches the literature on consumer experience of using AR technology.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on person–environment fit theory, this study aims to investigate how the relationships between service task types (i.e. utilitarian and hedonic service tasks) and perceived authenticity (i.e. service and brand authenticity) differ under different conditions of service providers (human employee vs service robot). This study further examines whether customers’ stereotypes toward service robots (competence vs warmth) moderate the relationship between service types and perceived authenticity.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a 2 × 2 between-subjects experimental design, Study 1 examines a casual restaurant, whereas Study 2 assesses a theme park restaurant. Analysis of covariance and PROCESS are used to analyze the data.

Findings

Both studies reveal that human service providers in hedonic services positively affect service and brand authenticity more than robotic employees. Additionally, the robot competence stereotype moderates the relationship between hedonic services, service and brand authenticity, whereas the robot warmth stereotype moderates the relationship between hedonic services and brand authenticity in Study 2.

Practical implications

Restaurant managers need to understand which functions and types of service outlets are best suited for service robots in different service contexts. Robot–environment fit should be considered when developers design and managers select robots for their restaurants.

Originality/value

This study blazes a new theoretical trail of service robot research to systematically propose customer experiences with different service types by drawing upon person–environment fit theory and examining the moderating role of customers’ stereotypes toward service robots.

Abstract

Purpose

Integrating the theory of consumption value into the stimulus-organism-response framework, this study aims to analyse the influence of external and internal factors on the customers’ perceptions of utilitarian, hedonic, social and epistemic values as drivers of the overall perceived value and customers’ continuance use of mobile banking (m-banking).

Design/methodology/approach

An online survey was conducted with 252 actual m-banking users, and the partial least squares structural equations modelling was applied to analyse the data.

Findings

The results reveal that ubiquity and gamification positively influence the perceived usefulness and entertainment, that is the utilitarian and hedonic perceived values. Furthermore, users’ self-congruence and innovativeness affect subjective norms and novelty-seeking, representing social and epistemic values. Except for the hedonic value, each value element impacts the overall perceived value, which in turn incites clients’ intention to continue using m-banking services.

Originality/value

By exploring the simultaneous effect of service-related and personal factors (stimuli) on different elements of perceived value (organism), this study contributes to the existing knowledge of consumption reactions (response) in the context of m-banking. The research of the Macedonian m-banking offers a closer insight into Western Balkan mobile commerce.

Objetivo

Integrando la Teoría del Valor de Consumo (TCV) en el marco Estímulo-Organismo-Respuesta (S-O-R), este estudio pretende analizar la influencia de factores externos e internos en las percepciones de valor utilitario, hedónico, social y epistémico de los clientes, como impulsores del valor percibido global y del uso continuado del m-banking por parte de los clientes.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Se realizó una encuesta en línea a 252 usuarios reales de banca móvil y se aplicó el modelo de ecuaciones estructurales por mínimos cuadrados parciales (PLS-SEM) para analizar los datos.

Resultados

Los resultados revelan que la ubicuidad y la gamificación influyen positivamente en la utilidad y el entretenimiento percibidos, es decir, en los valores utilitarios y hedónicos percibidos. Además, la autocongruencia y la capacidad de innovación de los usuarios afectan a las normas subjetivas y a la búsqueda de novedades, que representan el valor social y epistémico. A excepción del valor hedónico, cada elemento de valor influye en el valor percibido global, que a su vez incita a los clientes a seguir utilizando los servicios de banca móvil.

Originalidad

Al explorar el efecto simultáneo de factores personales y relacionados con el servicio (estímulos) sobre diferentes elementos del valor percibido (organismo), contribuimos al conocimiento existente sobre las reacciones de consumo (respuesta) en el contexto del m-banking. La investigación del m-banking macedonio ofrece una visión más cercana del comercio móvil de los Balcanes Occidentales.

本研究将消费价值理论(TCV)纳入刺激-组织-反应(S-O-R)框架, 旨在分析外部和内部因素对客户感知功利价值、享乐价值、社会价值和认识价值的影响, 这些因素是客户整体感知价值和持续使用移动银行的驱动因素。

方法

对 252 名实际移动银行用户进行了在线调查, 并采用偏最小二乘法结构方程模型(PLS-SEM)分析数据。

研究结果

结果表明, 普遍性和游戏化对用户的有用性和娱乐性感知, 即功利性和享乐性感知价值有积极影响。此外, 用户的自我一致性和创新性也会影响主观规范和新奇寻求, 这代表了社会价值和认识价值。除享乐价值外, 每个价值要素都会影响整体感知价值, 进而激发客户继续使用移动银行服务的意愿。

独创性

通过探索服务相关因素和个人因素(刺激)对感知价值不同要素(有机体)的同时影响, 我们为现有的有关移动银行背景下消费反应(响应)的知识做出了贡献。通过对马其顿移动银行的研究, 我们可以更深入地了解西巴尔干移动商务。

Abstract

Purpose

Linking platform governance and value, the article explains how platforms manage openness, which gives users access and authority, to shape the user experience and orchestrate interactive value co-creation within their ecosystem.

Design/methodology/approach

We adopted an abductive approach, drawing on an embedded multiple case study of platform-based local alternative food networks. The strong symbolic dimension embedded into that context allowed for a full exploration of value in its interactive nature.

Findings

Platform openness influences value creation directly, but also through two mechanisms: one behavioural, involving interactions between users and sides, and the other cognitive, involving users’ abstraction level. Value co-creation goes beyond the online space and occurs in complex sets of interactions between users. Digital platforms can thus generate intrinsic value co-creation that enhances their utility.

Originality/value

We have adopted a marketing channel theory reading of openness and mobilised a broader conception of value as well as cognitive science to explain how this key element of platform governance affects value creation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to provide in-depth knowledge on customer-facing technology and customer experience in the grocery retail sector, including how the value-added potential of customer-facing technologies may be enhanced.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis is based on 30 in-depth interviews with “early adopters” of customer-facing digital retail technologies in the Norwegian grocery sector. Theoretically, the study draws on notions of the customer journey and customer experience.

Findings

The study contributes to deepening insights concerning how digital retail technology is used and may be geared to further increase value for customers, specifically how retailers may use data on customers and products to personalize digital retail technology offerings and gain a competitive advantage. The findings underline how customer value is context-dependent and show that while grocery retail customers primarily emphasize utilitarian benefits related to customer-facing technologies, hedonic benefits are valuable biproducts. Moreover, the study showcases how personalization is key in addressing customers’ needs and wants, and may serve to increase the overall value of customer-facing technologies for customers and retailers.

Originality/value

The study’s sector-specific focus on technology in use contributes to enhance knowledge on how digital retail technologies can be leveraged to the benefit of customers and retailers, including customers’ sector-specific needs and wants.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this study is to elucidate the influence of reference price on consumers' willingness to buy (WTB). Additionally, the study seeks to investigate the impacts of consumer perceived value (CPV): emotional, social, and monetary levels in relation to reference price and WTB. Furthermore, it aims to identify the moderating effect of product type, distinguishing between hedonic and utilitarian products.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collection was conducted through an anonymous questionnaire survey using a web-based platform called Prolific. The sample consisted of 258 individuals. The study performed experimental studies to assess the connections among variables and used structural equation modeling as well as Hayes' PROCESS macro models 4 and 8.

Findings

Presenting reference price alongside regular prices for products significantly enhances WTB. Furthermore, the mediating effect of the CPV exhibited a significant influence, particularly in the emotional and monetary dimensions but not although the social aspect. Additionally, the findings unveiled substantial variations in the mediating effect of CPV when examining hedonic versus utilitarian products.
