Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to assess the logistics performance of national trade corridors in Myanmar based on a theoretical portrayal of multimodal transport in logistics chains combined with the real-time operation of such chains. A cost-time-distance model was used as the core theoretical framework for the discussion. Empirical data related to cost, time and distance was obtained to evaluate national trade corridors in Myanmar. The study explored the performance of trade corridor in the pulses and beans sector from the largest sown and harvest areas to the main seaports in Myanmar. The pulses and beans sector was selected because the country is the 2nd highest exporter in the world and would benefit from improved access to its national seaports. Under the cost-time-distance model used, it was observed that physical infrastructure, institutional environment as well as limited capability of local providers hindered the overall performance of the trade corridors under study.

Abstract
Purpose
This field study aims to investigate the interactive relationships of millennial employee’s gender, supervisor’s gender and country culture on the conflict-management strategies (CMS) in ten countries (USA, China, Turkey, Germany, Bangladesh, Portugal, Pakistan, Italy, Thailand and Hong Kong).
Design/methodology/approach
This exploratory study extends past research by examining the interactive effects of gender × supervisor’s gender × country on the CMS within a single generation of workers, millennials. The Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory–II, Form A was used to assess the use of the five CMS (integrating, obliging, dominating, avoiding and compromising). Data analysis found CMS used in the workplace are associated with the interaction of worker and supervisor genders and the national context of their work.
Findings
Data analysis (N = 2,801) was performed using the multivariate analysis of covariance with work experience as a covariate. The analysis provided support for the three-way interaction. This interaction suggests how one uses the CMS depends on self-gender, supervisor’s gender and the country where the parties live. Also, the covariate – work experience – was significantly associated with CMS.
Research limitations/implications
One of the limitations of this study is that the authors collected data from a collegiate sample of employed management students in ten countries. There are significant implications for leading global teams and training programs for mid-level millennials.
Practical implications
There are various conflict situations where one conflict strategy may be more appropriate than others. Organizations may have to change their policies for recruiting employees who are more effective in conflict management.
Social implications
Conflict management is not only important for managers but it is also important for all human beings. Individuals handle conflict every day and it would be really good if they could handle it effectively and improve their gains.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no study has tested a three-way interaction of variables on CMS. This study has a wealth of information on CMS for global managers.

This is a selective annotated bibliography of the literature on Christopher Columbus from 1970 to 1989. The subject is particularly relevant considering the approach of the Quincentenary of the “discovery” of America in 1992. For that same reason, there has been an outpouring of literature on the subject since 1990, a significant subset of which contributes to are interpretation of Columbus the man, his voyages, and their impact on the new world. It is hoped that this more recent literature will be part of a subsequent annotated bibliography.

Abstract
Using a meta-regression analysis, we quantitatively review the empirical literature on the relation between effective tax rate (ETR) and firm size. Accounting literature offers two competing theories on this relation: The political cost theory, suggesting a positive size-ETR relation, and the political power theory, suggesting a negative size-ETR relation. Using a unique data set of 56 studies that do not show a clear tendency towards either of the two theories, we contribute to the discussion on the size-ETR relation in three ways: First, applying meta-regression analysis on a US meta-data set, we provide evidence supporting the political cost theory. Second, our analysis reveals factors that are possible sources of variation and bias in previous empirical studies; these findings can improve future empirical and analytical models. Third, we extend our analysis to a cross-country meta-data set; this extension enables us to investigate explanations for the two competing theories in more detail. We find that Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory, a transparency index and a corruption index explain variation in the size-ETR relation. Independent of the two theories, we also find that tax planning aspects potentially affect the size-ETR relation. To our knowledge, these explanations have not yet been investigated in our research context.

Abstract
Purpose
Shaped as an exploratory pilot case study, the purpose of this paper is threefold: to describe a case of how Lesson Study (LS) is implemented at a school in Kazakhstan; to identify if and in which ways teachers benefit from participating in LS and what barriers they encounter; and to discuss the possible implications for practice. Mainly, this research endeavors to produce knowledge that might serve as a base for further large-scale studies and interventions as well as inform policy makers and LS program developers and executors of the teachers’ perspective on the quality of assistance they require and, thus, stimulate reflection on the possible ways to overcome existing barriers.
Design/methodology/approach
This research adopts qualitative paradigm and utilizes a pilot exploratory case study framework (Gillham, 2000). The data were analyzed by means of what Thomas (2003) refers to as “general inductive approach” which “is intended to aid an understanding of meaning in complex data through the development of summary themes or categories from the raw data, i.e. data reduction” (p. 2). The data were analyzed as text and reduced by means of inductive coding. The text was read rigorously and systematically in order to identify emerging themes based on the recurrence of patterns (Thomas, 2003, p. 3).
Findings
LS is a growing phenomenon in Kazakhstan which, if systemically supported and organized properly based on the shared understanding, has a great potential to make a positive impact on teachers’ learning, knowledge sharing and collegiality as well as to become a powerful tool to help teachers overcome collaboratively the pressure of the nationwide reforms. It has profound potential to change teachers’ values and beliefs about the effective pedagogies applicable to students’ learning and developing skills, required in the twenty-first century.
Research limitations/implications
The research is limited by the chosen methodology since there is a wide criticism in the literature related to inability of single case studies to provide generalizable data (Yin, 1994 in Woodside, 2010, p. 249). Another limitation, as the literature puts it forward, is that case studies are biased by researcher’s perspective and tend to report what the researcher “wants to find” (Gillham, 2000, p.28 ); thus, in its core, case study is subjective. However, Gillham (2000) proposes how these problems could be addressed by means of what he calls following the principals of “researcher of integrity” who is “constantly challenging and scrutinizing” himself and “detached honesty,” which implies acknowledging your own place in the scheme of things and striving to “decentre from yourself” (p. 28). Thus, the researcher tried her best to comply with the mentioned above principals.
Practical implications
The findings within this research could be used by researchers as a starting point for in-depth studies, the case studies of Lesson Studies practices in specific schools or regions of Kazakhstan as well as by the policy makers and school leaders as a thought-provoking source on how to effectively structure teachers’ professional development in schools.
Originality/value
This paper is the first academic source to shed light on LS as a means to in-school teachers’ professional development in the context of Kazakhstan.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to identify the role of the first and second generations in the process of internationalization of a family business active in the SME sector in Poland.
Design/methodology/approach
Conducted research was qualitative in character. The research method used was the case study. A total of six case studies were developed that demonstrate the experiences of Polish exporters – family companies in the SME sector. The primary research tool was the unstructured questionnaire-based interview. Interviews were conducted over the years 2008-2009. The group of examined respondents included both the first and second generation.
Findings
Analysis of the developed case studies indicates that it was the first generation that was responsible for making decision and undertaking operations in the first phase. With time, that generation kept only decision-related responsibilities. The second generation tends to continue tradition rather than being an agent of change.
Originality/value
The main contribution of this paper has been to make a characterization of the process of internationalization of family businesses in the SME sector in Poland – a country undergoing radical systemic transition. Its large-scale effect is the commencement of the process of creating companies, including family businesses. On the other hand, it makes possible the defining of the role of the second generation in the process of internationalization of family businesses, regardless of whether that generation is a continuator of the initiative of the first generation or is itself the initiator of changes.

Abstract
Purpose
For sustaining a competitive advantage in the integrated world economy, it has become imperative for family firms to internationalise their operations in overseas markets. However, despite the growing set of literature, results are still inconclusive with respect to family firms’ internationalisation. Thus, this study aims to address this gap by systematically reviewing 142 articles (1991–2019) to help researchers in identifying and unfolding the unexplored themes in the underlying area.
Design/methodology/approach
For systematically reviewing articles, the study uses a three-step methodology following PRISMA guidelines, bibliometric analysis and thematic analysis. Descriptive statistics of 142 research articles are obtained through bibliometric analysis while thematic analysis is carried out to create themes or clusters of various factors relating to family firms’ internationalisation.
Findings
The current review uncovers the evolving trends in the research streams, most productive authors, top journals and articles, co-citation analysis, as well as the major themes surrounding the family firms’ internationalisation literature. Results from bibliometric analysis indicate that family firms’ internationalisation is an upcoming research area. Also, the review indicates an opportunity for scholars from developing nations to make significant contributions in the underlying research stream.
Research limitations/implications
Results from bibliometric and thematic analysis will help academicians and researchers in accumulating a holistic understanding relating to family firms’ internationalisation and understanding the upcoming trends in family firms’ research, thereby guiding the future research scope. Also, it will assist the family firms’ leaders and managers in understanding the important dynamics in overseas markets and various factors to be considered while planning their internationalisation.
Originality/value
Undertaking a systematic literature review presents readers with a state-of-the-art understanding of the underlying research topic. To the best of the knowledge, to date, the study is the first to conduct the review of literature through bibliometric analysis with the help of R Studio software in the field of family firms’ internationalisation. Also, the study is the first to review more than 100 research articles in the underlying area. Finally, the study proposes a comprehensive framework integrating the major themes and facets relating to family firms’ internationalisation.
