Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop the numerical simulated methodology for sloshing motion of fluid inside a two dimension rectangular tank, and parametric studies were performed for three parameters – excitation frequency, excitation amplitude, and liquid depth.

Design/methodology/approach

A numerically simulated methodology by using the cell‐centered pressure‐based SIMPLE scheme and level set method for the sloshing motion of fluid in a rectangular tank has been developed. The convection term in the Navier‐Stokes equations and the equations used in the level set method were treated by the second‐order upwind scheme. The temporal derivative terms were solved by the three‐level second order scheme. The diffusion term in the Navier‐Stokes equations alone was solved by the central‐difference scheme. All algebraic equations were solved by the point Gauss‐Seidel method. A fully implicit scheme to treat the level set distancing equation, written as the advection equation, was developed. In addition, the level set distancing equation was solved by the iterative procedure to determine the variation of free surface.

Findings

For given excitation amplitude together with a liquid depth, the free surface displacement increases when the excitation frequency is less than the resonance frequency of tank. However, the free surface displacement decreases when the excitation is greater than the resonant frequency of the tank. It is noted that the maximum free surface displacement is generated under the circumstance for which the excitation frequency approaches the resonant frequency. The excitation amplitude and the excitation frequency have a substantial effect on the impact pressure on the wall of the tank being investigated.

Originality/value

The sloshing motion of fluid in a rectangular tank has been studied by researchers and scholars using many numerical methods; however, literature employing the level set method to study the sloshing motion of fluid is limited. In this study, the cell‐centered pressure‐based SIMPLE scheme and level set method can be employed to predict the sloshing motion. The numerical methodology can help the engineer to predict sloshing motion of fluid.

Abstract

New contact boundary modelling is achieved with a basic set of 2 and 3 dimension contact primitives. Contact constraints are originally introduced in the variational equations and associated Newton—Raphson scheme via an external penalty formulation using primitive equations. Consequently, penalty part of external load vector and tangent stiffness matrices are developed for all contact primitives. In this way, contact prescribed boundary displacements are also taken into account. Contact treatment is then completed with Newton—Raphson elements for elastic and plastic regularized friction constitutive models. In this paper, the process is extended to elastoplastic models. Finally, we propose a self acting procedure with contact algorithms (interiority, sliding and contact loss) and related subroutines for implementation in finite element framework. We illustrate these developments by means of two‐dimensional open die forging and three‐dimensional plate coining typical benchmarks with reference to bulk elastoplastic and viscoplastic constitutive models.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to deal with the development of a software tool to simulate and study vehicle – road interaction (VRI) to quantify the forces induced and energy released from vehicles to the road pavement, in different vehicle motion scenarios, and the energy absorbed by the road surface, speed reducers or a specific energy harvester surface or device. The software tool also enables users to quantify the energetic efficiency of the process.

Design/methodology/approach

Existing software tools were analysed and its limitations were identified in terms of performing energetic analysis on the interaction between the vehicle and the road pavement elements, such as speed reducers or energy harvest devices. The software tool presented in this paper intends to overcome those limitations and precisely quantify the energy transfer.

Findings

Different vehicle models and VRI models were evaluated, allowing to conclude about each model precision: bicycle car model has a 60 per cent higher precision when compared with quarter-car model, and contact patch analysis model has a 67 per cent higher precision than single force analysis model. Also, a technical study was performed for different equipment surface shapes and displacements, concluding that these variables have a great influence on the energy released by the vehicle and on the energy harvested by the equipment surface.

Originality/value

The developed software tool allows to study VRI with a higher precision than existing tools, especially when energetic analyses are performed and when speed reduction or energy harvesting devices are applied on the pavement.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the transient disturbances created by an internal line heat source that suddenly starts moving uniformly inside a visco‐elastic half‐space.

Design/methodology/approach

Generalised theory of thermo‐elasticity with relaxation time proposed by Lord‐Shulman is applied. The material of the semi‐infinite medium is an isotropic visco‐elastic solid of Kelvin‐Voight type. Fourier and Laplace transform techniques are used.

Findings

Applying the Fourier and Laplace transform techniques, expressions for displacement components in the transformed domain are found. These expressions prove the existence of three waves – a modified thermal wave, a visco‐elastic wave of defused nature and a transverse visco‐elastic wave.

Research limitations/implications

Surface displacement components were evaluated on the boundary for only a short time.

Originality/value

The paper provides numerical results that are illustrated graphically to highlight the variations of surface displacement components with distance for different values of time, source depth and velocity of the source.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a method for determining the safe flight boundaries of the asymmetrically loaded airplane in the terminal flight phases. The method is applicable to both, the inherent airplane asymmetries and those asymmetries resulting from the airplane use irregularities, asymmetric stores under the wing being one of the examples. The method is aimed to be used in the airplane design and combat airplane service life support.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis method is based on the comparison of demanded and structurally available flight control displacements. Control surface aerodynamic properties, structurally available flight control displacements and dynamic pressure define control surface authority as the capability of control surfaces to generate the forces and moments needed by the airplane to perform required maneuvers. Demanded flight control displacements are those related to the maneuvering requirements and to those needed to compensate lateral wind and any type of the asymmetric airplane load.

Findings

The method results are given in the form of the speed and lateral wind component and are a subset of the total set of airplane safe flight boundaries. The key objective is the improvement of flight safety of the asymmetrically loaded airplane.

Research limitations/implications

The method supplements the safe flight boundaries of the symmetrically loaded airplane, the minimal landing speed being the dominant limitation. This boundary positions method analysis in the domain of linear lift coefficient variation, as the function of the angle of attack permits the addition of control surface displacements required to perform the maneuvers and compensate the asymmetrical loads.

Originality/value

The method combines a simple roll dynamics model, stationary equations of the airplane lateral-directional motion and several numeric analysis procedures to obtain the results. This new combination possesses synergy properties and is implemented as the computer program.

Abstract

Purpose

A design of sensor networks for structural health monitoring (SHM) with guided waves poses a hard challenge. Therefore different approaches are possible. A known one is the usage of probability of detection (POD) criteria. Here, areas of potential impact sensitivity are calculated for every sensor which leads to a POD. The number of sensors is increased until a demanded POD is reached. However, these calculations are usually based on finite element methods and underlie different assumptions and approximations which can cause different inaccuracies. These limitations are avoided by using an experimental data basis for virtual sensors in this paper. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

An air-coupled ultrasound scanning technique is used for guided wave investigations. Recorded displacements of a structure surface are used as stimulation of virtual sensors which can be designed by software and positioned within available data field. For the calculation of sensor signals an isogeometric finite element model is used. The virtually bonded layer of the virtual piezoceramic sensor interpolates with non-uniform rational B-Splines (NURBS) the measured nodal data for each time step. This interpolation corresponds to a displacement boundary condition and is used to calculate the electrical potential at the free surface of the sensor.

Findings

Experimental data based on air-coupled ultrasound scanning technique can be used for elimination of disadvantages in numerical simulations by developing sensor networks for SHM. In combination with a transfer matrix method (TM) a three-dimensional displacement of specimen surface for complex composites can be calculated. To obtain the sensor signal a surface-bonded sensor is modeled by an isogeometric finite element approach. A good accordance is found between calculated virtual sensor signal and its experimental verification.

Research limitations/implications

Some deviations between calculated signal and its experimental verification are mainly justified by different spectral transfer functions between wave field scanning technique and signal recording of applied sensors. Furthermore, sensor influence on wave propagation is neglected in the presented method.

Originality/value

In this paper, the principle of virtual sensors is applied on anisotropic multilayered lamina by using isogeometric finite elements for piezoelectric sensors. This enables any sensor dimension, layout and position on complex composites. Furthermore a bonding layer between specimen and sensor is considered. The method allows a detailed analysis of sensor behavior on a specimen surface and the design and optimization of entire sensor networks for SHM.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the variation of the mechanical strength and failure modes of solder balls with reducing diameters under conditions of multiple reflows.

Design/methodology/approach

The solder balls with diameters from 250 to 760 µm were mounted on the copper-clad laminate by 1-5 reflows. The strength of the solder balls was tested by the single ball shear test and pull test, respectively. The failure modes of tested samples were identified by combing morphologies of fracture surfaces and force-displacement curves. The stresses were revealed and the failure explanations were assisted by the finite element analysis for the shear test of single solder ball.

Findings

The average strength of a smaller solder ball (e.g. 250 µm in diameter) is higher than that of a larger one (e.g. 760 µm in diameter). The strength of smaller solder balls is more highly variable with multiple reflows than larger diameters balls, where the strength increased mostly with the number of reflows. According to load-displacement curves or fracture surface morphologies, the failure modes of solder ball in the shear and pull tests can be categorized into three kinds.

Originality/value

The strength of solder balls will not deteriorate when the diameter of solder ball is decreased with a reflow, but a smaller solder ball has a higher failure risk after multiple reflows. The failure modes for shear and pull tests can be identified quickly by the combination of force-displacement curves and the morphologies of fracture surfaces.

Purpose

The purpose of the work is to provide a comprehensive review of the digital image correlation (DIC) technique for those who are interested in performing the DIC technique in the area of manufacturing.

Originality/value

Herein, the historical development, main strengths and measurement setup of DIC are introduced. Subsequently, the basic principles of the DIC technique are outlined in detail. The analysis of measurement accuracy associated with experimental factors and correlation algorithms is discussed and some useful recommendations for reducing measurement errors are also offered. Then, the utilization of DIC in different manufacturing fields (e.g. cutting, welding, forming and additive manufacturing) is summarized. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of DIC in intelligent manufacturing are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to numerically investigate the surface texturing effects on the main bearings of a three-cylinder ethanol engine in terms of the power loss and friction coefficient for dynamic load conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The mathematical formulation considers the Partir-Cheng modified Reynolds equation. The mass-conserving Elrod-Adams p-θ model with the JFO approach is used to deal with cavitation. A fluid-structure coupling procedure is considered for the elastohydrodynamic lubrication. Accordingly, a 3-D linear-elastic substructured finite element model obtained from Abaqus is applied

Findings

Simulations were carried out considering different dimple texture designs in terms of location, depth and radius. The results suggested that there are regions where texturing is more effective. In addition, distinct journal rotation speeds are studied and the surface texture was able to reduce friction and the power loss by 7%.

Practical implications

The surface texturing can be a useful technique to reduce the power loss on the crankshaft bearing increasing the overall engine efficiency.

Originality/value

The surface texturing performance in a three-cylinder engine using ethanol as fuel was investigated through numerical experimentation. The results are supported by previous findings.

Abstract

Purpose

To solve the instability problem of Zhangjiayao landslide caused by rainfall, the internal mechanism of slope instability and the supporting effect of anti-slide piles are studied. The research results can provide theoretical basis for the prevention and control of loess landslides.

Design/methodology/approach

A three-dimensional finite element model of Zhangjiayao landslide is established by field geological survey, laboratory test and numerical simulation.

Findings

The results show that Zhangjiayao landslide is a loess-mudstone contact surface landslide, and rainfall leads to slope instability and traction landslide. The greater the rainfall intensity, the faster the pore water pressure of the slope increases and the faster the matrix suction decreases. The longer the rainfall duration, the greater the pore water pressure of the slope and the smaller the matrix suction. Anti-slide pile treatment can significantly improve slope stability. The slope safety factor increases with the increase of embedded depth of anti-slide pile and decreases with the increase of pile spacing.

Originality/value

Based on the unsaturated soil seepage theory and finite element strength reduction method, the failure mechanism of Zhangjiayao landslide was revealed, and the anti-slide pile structure was optimized and designed based on the pile-soil interaction principle. The research results can provide theoretical basis for the treatment of loess landslides.
