Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this study is to identify the way in which research on new business models in agri-food sector has been developed, in order to identify the main lines of work followed and determine a future research agenda in this field.
Design/methodology/approach
A systematic review of the literature is carried out, by applying the PRISMA method to identify and classify the main articles published on agri-food business models in journals included in the Web of Science Core Collection database.
Findings
The systematic literature review has identified three main forms of business models in the agri-food sector: sustainable business models, technology-based business models and cooperative business models. The three types of new business models are complementary and can sometimes be adopted together. The identification of these types of business models and the variants included in each of them is a valid starting point for new developments in this field.
Research limitations/implications
The limitations of this study are those typical of any literature review and derived from the methodology used. The establishment of criteria relating to time, language, type of publication or database chosen means that this review may have left out relevant studies in this field of research. It is therefore recommended that new reviews be carried out with different criteria in the coming years in order to supplement the results obtained in this study.
Originality/value
Some research gaps were identified that should be further explored in the future. First, the relationship between digitisation and technological innovation in agri-food business models and the level of implementation of sustainable objectives in these business models has not been researched thoroughly. In addition, and despite the fact that the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has boosted innovation in agri-food business models, the authors have detected a lack of papers focused on solving problems arising from the shortage of raw materials or labour, possible energy crises or external dependence on local markets when it comes to meeting demand. The war in Ukraine has demonstrated the limitations of international markets, mainly the European market, when it comes to dealing with problems arising from this type of crisis.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is firstly to analyze whether the determining factors of the entrepreneurial intention of academics are the same for men and women and test whether their degree of importance varies depending on gender, and secondly to test whether the lesser entrepreneurial intention of women detected in previous studies is because of the lesser presence of the determining factors of entrepreneurial intention among women or, on the contrary, is determined by the existence of implicit barriers that do not depend on these factors.
Design/methodology/approach
After conducting a survey on a sample of 1,178 academics, the results of a linear regression model confirm the hypothesis that female academics have less of an entrepreneurial intention.
Findings
Moreover, through the Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition, it is observed that this lesser female entrepreneurial behavior is not because of the absence of any of the factors considered as determinants of entrepreneurial intention, but instead is related to the existence of implicit barriers for women that influence their entrepreneurial intention.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time that a study of this nature has been conducted internationally. Unlike other studies on academic entrepreneurship, the authors do not restrict the sample to one or two universities but rather aim the study at all universities in Spain and, therefore, at all academics from all branches of knowledge.

Abstract
Purpose
This work tries to shed light on what factors can influence, positively or negatively, the decision to license a patent from a university, in order to offer some recommendations that can contribute to increasing the number of patents licensed from universities.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on a sample of researchers at Spanish universities who have already registered patents, this work shows that the individual factors of the researcher outweigh the institutional factors in determining the decision to patent an invention. Likewise, the probability of patenting an invention is higher when the researcher's level of participation in the process is greater.
Findings
The results of our study allow us to affirm that, in the Spanish university setting, individual factors play a more important role in one's decision to license a patent than institutional factors. In this sense, the collaboration of companies or experts from outside of academia in the research from which the patent was granted is the most relevant factor.
Originality/value
This work, the first study of this type to be carried out in Europe, concludes with a recommendation for reinforcing the structure and functionality of technology transfer offices as a basic policy for the promotion and facilitation of commercial exploitation of innovation in the universities.

Este trabajo intenta arrojar luz sobre qué factores pueden influir, positiva o negativamente, en la decisión de licenciar una patente de una universidad, con el fin de ofrecer algunas recomendaciones que puedan contribuir a aumentar el número de patentes universitarias.
Diseño de la investigación
Basado en una muestra de investigadores en universidades españolas que ya han registrado patentes, este trabajo muestra que los factores individuales superan a los factores institucionales a la hora de determinar la decisión de patentar una invención. Asimismo, la probabilidad de patentar una invención es mayor cuando el nivel de participación del investigador en el proceso es mayor.
Recomendaciones
Los resultados de nuestro estudio nos permiten afirmar que, en el ámbito universitario español, los factores individuales juegan un papel más importante en la decisión de solicitar una patente que los factores institucionales. En este sentido, la colaboración de empresas o expertos de fuera de la academia en la investigación a partir de la cual se otorgó la patente es el factor más relevante.
Originalidad
Este trabajo es el primer estudio de este tipo que se realiza en Europa y concluye con una recomendación para reforzar la estructura y la funcionalidad de las oficinas de transferencia de tecnología (OTRI) como política básica para la promoción de la explotación comercial de la innovación en las universidades.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the “region-of-origin” effect in the purchase of cava, a sparkling wine. Cava is a multiregional designation of origin: although it is a product typical of a particular Spanish region (Catalonia), it is also produced in other regions in Spain.
Design/methodology/approach
The technique of conjoint analysis is used to identify the structure of the preferences of cava consumers, and to evaluate how that structure is affected by the inclusion of a message that highlights the regional origin of the product. A survey was conducted among 473 wine buyers in the region of Extremadura (Spain).
Findings
The main findings show that the “region-of-origin” effect is significant for the regional buyer of this type of wine, and that the sales of regional brands of cava would be greater if their regional origin were emphasized by indicating the location of the producer in a prominent place on the label. Moreover, three segments of purchasers differentiated by their preference structure are identified.
Originality/value
The novelty of the study lies in the fact that this PDO is a multiregional designation of origin, and that the technique used, conjoint analysis, is applied not only to determine the buyer’s preference structure, but also to evaluate how that structure is affected when the regional origin of the product is highlighted in the message to the purchaser. This study is of value to academic researchers, wineries managers, and regional governments as it highlights important aspects to design marketing strategies and trade policies.

Abstract
Purpose
Identifying and analyzing aspects related to sustainable human resources (HRs) in an emerging, Iberoamerican location (Monterrey, Mexico). Documenting employee experiences regarding sustainable practices of HR in their companies to understand the enacted meaning of sustainable HR management (HRM). This study aims to seek answers to understand the ways environmental sustainability is present in HR subprocesses and the ways companies regard HRs from a sustainability perspective.
Design/methodology/approach
This exploratory research has a qualitative approach. The authors collected and summarized semi-structured interviews with 31 key informants that work fully or partially in HRs in a large, industrialized city in an Iberoamerican, emerging economy (Monterrey, Mexico).
Findings
The main findings based on responses from HR professionals are as follows: HR activities may contribute to the sustainability of the business and its physical environment; HR can create a culture of care for the resources, but training and development activities are not currently used optimally; and in addition to the economic sustainability of the employers, social and environmental sustainability are also within HR’s influence sphere.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the emerging literature on sustainability in HRM, due the dearth of information related to “green” or environmental practices in HRM. This study reports specifically on the ways this perspective adds value within Mexican enterprises, but the authors are confident that these findings also generalize across industries, enterprises and regions.

Identificar y analizar aspectos relacionados con la sustentabilidad de los recursos humanos de empresas en una localidad iberoamericana emergente (Monterrey, México). Documentar las experiencias de los trabajadores respecto a las prácticas sustentables de recursos humanos en sus empresas para comprender el significado de la administración de Recursos Humanos (RR.HH.) sustentable en la práctica. Hemos buscado respuestas respecto a las maneras en que la sostenibilidad ambiental está presente en los subprocesos de RR.HH. y las maneras en que las organizaciones utilizan una perspectiva de sostenibilidad en la gestión de recursos humanos.
Metodología
Esta investigación exploratoria tiene un enfoque cualitativo. Recolectamos y resumimos treinta y un entrevistas semiestructuradas con informantes clave que trabajan total o parcialmente en en una ciudad grande e industrializada perteneciente a una economía iberoamericana emergente (Monterrey, México).
Hallazgos
Nuestros principales hallazgos basados en las respuestas de los profesionales de RR.HH. son: a) las actividades de RR.HH. pueden contribuir a la sostenibilidad del negocio y su medio ambiente físico, b) RR.HH. puede crear una cultura de cuidado de los recursos, pero las actividades de formación, entrenamiento y desarrollo no se utilizan actualmente de forma óptima, y c) Además de la sostenibilidad económica de las organizaciones, la sostenibilidad social y medioambiental también están dentro de la esfera de influencia de RR.HH.
Originalidad
Este estudio contribuye a la literatura emergente sobre sostenibilidad en la gestión de recursos humanos, debido a la falta de información relacionada con las prácticas “verdes” o ambientales de RR.HH. En este documento reportamos específicamente sobre las formas en que esta consideración de valor en RR.HH sostenible dentro de las empresas mexicanas, sin embargo, está claro que estos hallazgos tienen una importancia más amplia en todas las empresas y regiones.
Objetivo
Identificar e analisar aspectos relacionados à sustentabilidade dos recursos humanos em empresas de uma localidade ibero-americana emergente (Monterrey, México). Observar as experiências dos trabalhadores de práticas sustentáveis de RH em suas empresas para entender o que significa na prática a gestão sustentável de RH. Buscamos respostas sobre as formas como a sustentabilidade ambiental está presente nos subprocessos de RH e as formas como as organizações utilizam a perspectiva da sustentabilidade na gestão de recursos humanos.
Metodologia
Esta pesquisa exploratória tem abordagem qualitativa. Coletamos e resumimos trinta e uma entrevistas semiestruturadas com informantes-chave que trabalham total ou parcialmente em uma grande cidade industrializada pertencente a uma economia emergente ibero-americana (Monterrey, México).
Resultados
Nossos principais achados com base nas respostas dos profissionais de RH são: a) as atividades de RH podem contribuir para a sustentabilidade do negócio e seu ambiente físico, b) o RH pode criar uma cultura de cuidado com os recursos, mas as atividades de educação, treinamento e desenvolvimento atualmente não são utilizadas de forma otimizada, e c) Além da sustentabilidade econômica das organizações, a sustentabilidade social e ambiental também estão dentro da esfera de influência do RH.
Originalidade
Este estudo contribui a literatura emergente sobre sustentabilidade na gestão de recursos humanos, devido à falta de informação relacionada às práticas “verdes” ou ambientais de RH. Neste estudo reportamos especificamente sobre o valor dos RH nas empresas mexicanas, no entanto, fica claro que essas descobertas podem ser generalizadas a outras indústrias, empresas e regiões.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this work is to explain the final negotiated prices for some of the most famous transfers of football players over the last twelve years (2007–2018).
Design/methodology/approach
The article analyses different values for forwards taken from the sports website Transfermarkt, developing a statistical model based on personal, performance, risk, environmental and popularity variables. From those values, the article finds an explanation for the final prices paid for 20 superstar players based on a combination of real option valuations, incorporating the players' life cycles and game theory.
Findings
The authors find that in a large percentage (70%) of the analysed cases, the price paid was higher than the intrinsic market value resulting from Transfermarkt, implying the existence of monopolistic rents, paid as “growth options” on prices from different negotiating conditions. On occasions, the final prices also exceed the value of the growth option, calculated under neutral bargaining conditions, highlighting the lack of economic viability of important transfers, leading to financial difficulties for the clubs involved.
Originality/value
The algorithm provides more flexibility and realism than previous proposals, based on the life cycle of football players, introducing the uncertainty and volatility of projections through Monte Carlo simulation, the capacity of clubs to bargain a price at any point of the contract and finally, the buyer's ability to transfer the player if his subsequent performance is not as expected.

Abstract
Purpose
This research proposes analytical valuation models throughout football players' life cycles based on crowd valuations from social media to produce dynamic sporting human capital disclosures, and therefore, supplying further useful information to capture the intellectual capital (IC) of football clubs.
Design/methodology/approach
This work is carried out using an econometric model that includes 658 observations of crowd judgments versus their transfer fees, for the best footballers of the three major European Leagues between 2006 and 2018. To make the model more parsimonious, the set of independent variables that really add value has been found across the stepwise methodology.
Findings
The significant differences between both models are analyzed, integrating previous academic literature based on the existence of negotiation elements in prices, and in the capacity of crowdsourcing to explain assessments of football players, from a dynamic perspective, alongside a new variable: injuries, which has not been explained before.
Originality/value
The broader assessments from crowdsourcing should be integrated in intellectual capital disclosures (ICD), from a critical, novel and dynamic perspective, creating a virtuous cycle between managers and fans, to increase transparency of financial information for stakeholders and society.

Abstract
Purpose
The primary aim of this paper is to develop a reference model for measuring corporate sustainability that can be used by organizations to integrate sustainability measures into their current performance measurement system, helping them to embed sustainability into daily activities and to forge a sustainability culture. A secondary intent is to present a critical analysis of some well‐known sustainability measurement initiatives, showing their strengths and shortcomings.
Design/methodology/approach
The approach employed to develop the reference model described in this paper is a qualitative analysis of the complementarity, shortcomings and strengths of eight well‐known sustainability measurement initiatives alongside an extant corporate sustainability literature review.
Findings
The research carried out has found that there is not a single initiative analyzed that tackles all sustainability issues and in fact there is no consensus around what should be measured and how. The main divergences are related to the following aspects: different criteria are applied by the initiatives to classify issues between dimensions; same impacts are evaluated at different levels of a cause‐effect relationship continuum by the same initiative; disagreement about the groups of stakeholders a company should engage and assessing the company impacts that should be taken into account (direct only or those of its whole value chain). Moreover, the way in which most initiatives measure sustainability performance is not the most adequate to embed it into the performance measurement systems, since they evaluate sustainability via presence of management practice and employ absolute values indicators rather than result‐oriented measures and ratio indicators that are more adequate for internal decision making. In this context, a sustainability measurement model was developed that is more comprehensive, objective and value‐oriented, constituting an attempt to shed light on these problems.
Research limitations/implications
The major limitation is the fact that the proposed model does not provide any guidance to select the sustainability key issues for an organization to be integrated into its current performance measurement system. It mainly provides a very comprehensive set of sustainability issues and measures that could be used.
Originality/value
This paper sheds light on some sustainability measurement current challenges – lack of consensus of what should be measured and how – and sustainability embedment into daily activities. Academics will find it useful in their research efforts since it presents a broad review of sustainability concepts as well as an analysis of strengths and shortcomings of all and each sustainability initiative focused. Practitioners will also find it useful as a tool to better understand the sustainability concept, to start measuring sustainability performance, to integrate it in, as well as to evaluate, their current performance measurement systems.

Abstract
Purpose
The Dutch supermarket industry is dominated by a small number of powerful companies which capture the majority of sales and which compete fiercely with each other. This competition is mainly quality based, in the sense of offering increasingly more products of higher quality and striving for better distribution mechanisms. Interestingly there does not seem to be much attention for the quality of the internal supermarket organisation, i.e. quality of people, internal processes, and performance reporting. Thus there seems to be a gap in both current literature and the quality improvement attention of supermarkets which needs to be addressed, to uncover new sources of improvement. The paper aims to discuss these issues.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, the authors introduce the high-performance organisation (HPO) framework, a validated technique for evaluating the strength of the internal organisation of companies and for proposing quality improvements. The aim of the research is to test whether the HPO Framework can be used to analyse the strength and performance of supermarkets and to come up with recommendations for improvement. A questionnaire into the drivers of success of supermarkets was constructed which was send to 400 supermarket franchisers, and the received data were subsequently analysed.
Findings
On average the participating supermarkets are well-performing but they cannot yet be classified as high performing according to the HPO Framework. The supermarkets with the highest HPO scores indeed achieve better financial results (both in terms of revenue and margin achieved) than those of supermarkets with lower HPO scores. Finally, the authors find that larger supermarkets (in square metres floor area) outperform smaller supermarkets on all HPO factors.
Research limitations/implications
As the HPO Framework is shown to be useful for not only analysing the performance of the supermarkets but also to generate recommendations for improvement of those supermarkets, individual supermarkets should evaluate their performance and operations using the HPO Framework to come up with improvement recommendations tailored to their own situation.
Originality/value
The HPO Framework has been applied during the past years in many sectors but not yet in the supermarket industry. Thus this research provides a unique insight in this industry. In addition academic researchers can use the HPO Framework to further investigate specific areas and factors of the supermarkets, in order to add to the literature on the quality of supermarkets.
