Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the role of digital technologies in tourism entrepreneurship. In particular, the main objective of this research is to examine the relationships among proactiveness, innovativeness, digitalization, and firm performance and growth in the hotel industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The data for this investigation were collected from 110 one- or two-star hotels that were operating in Poland during the time of this research. This study employs PLS-SEM to analyze the relationships among the examined variables.

Findings

The results show that digitalization has a significantly positive impact on a hotel’s performance. Moreover, digitalization mediates the impact of entrepreneurial behaviors on performance. In particular, digitization is a full mediator for the impact of proactiveness on firm growth and innovation on market performance. Additionally, there is a partial complementary mediation effect of digitalization in the case of impact of innovativeness on firm growth; digitization is not a mediator for the impact of proactiveness on firm growth.

Originality/value

Previous studies have not captured the relationships among entrepreneurship, digitalization, and performance; this study helps to fill the gap and examine these associations in the hospitality industry. The outcome of this study provides valuable insights for hoteliers for understanding the role (and importance) of digitalization in the context of proactiveness and innovativeness.

Abstract

Purpose

This study proposes practical digitalization strategies and well-grounded evaluation criteria for maritime container supply chains.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors identified the status of supply chain digitalization of the Port of Busan in South Korea and developed three digitalization strategies based on industry requirements and consultations with port experts. The authors proposed 11 evaluation criteria for examining the main digitalization strategies in the supply chain operations reference model, based on a survey among 46 experts and used multi-criteria decision-making approaches to prioritize the strategies and evaluation criteria.

Findings

The results delineate the status of the digitalization of a real-world port-focal supply chain. The model can be successfully customized to include well-grounded evaluation criteria for digitalization strategies, and presents a practical way to advance the supply chain digitalization strategies. Based on the survey and evaluation, the authors find that increasing data accessibility and improving quality are preferred to adopting a data and information sharing platform.

Research limitations/implications

As the study is limited to the Port of Busan, future case studies could be undertaken to container supply chains driven by different regional ports.

Practical implications

Stakeholders, such as truckers, terminal operators, and shipping liners, might consider the proposed strategies and evaluation criteria when digitalizing their supply chains.

Originality/value

By identifying the needs and specifications of maritime container supply chain digitalization strategies, developing evaluation criteria, and conducting a case study for proof of concept, the study proposes an operational management process with practical, real-world benefits for port-focal supply chains.

Abstract

Purpose

Digitalization is an element capable of improving companies’ financial performance. Despite the relevance of the topic, the financial effects associated with extensive transparency in digitalization choices have rarely been explored in extant literature. This study aims to close this important gap by examining the effect of digitalization-related information on the cost of equity capital.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses manual content analysis on a sample of 122 international listed firms to measure the level of transparency in digitalization choices and a regression model to test the effect of this transparency on the cost of equity capital.

Findings

The results show that broad transparency allows firms to benefit from a lower cost of equity capital. From this perspective, disseminating information about digitalization choices in a signaling theory key represents the signal that companies send to investors.

Originality/value

This study extends the knowledge about the potential of transparency to facilitate access to finance by examining the effect of another type of information, namely, those relating to digitalization choices, on the cost of equity capital.

Abstract

Purpose

Quality management practitioners have yet to cease the potential of digitalisation. Furthermore, there is a lack of tools such as frameworks guiding practitioners in the digital transformation of their organisations. The purpose of this study is to provide a framework to guide quality practitioners with the implementation of digitalisation in their existing practices.

Design/methodology/approach

A review of literature assessed how quality management and digitalisation have been integrated. Findings from the literature review highlighted the success of the integration of Lean manufacturing with digitalisation. A comprehensive list of Lean Six Sigma tools were then reviewed in terms of their effectiveness and relevance for the hybrid digitisation approach to process improvement (HyDAPI) framework.

Findings

The implementation of the proposed HyDAPI framework in an industrial case study led to increased efficiency, reduction of waste, standardised work, mistake proofing and the ability to root cause non-conformance products.

Research limitations/implications

The activities and tools in the HyDAPI framework are not inclusive of all techniques from Lean Six Sigma.

Practical implications

The HyDAPI framework is a flexible guide for quality practitioners to digitalise key information from manufacturing processes. The framework allows organisations to select the appropriate tools as needed. This is required because of the varying and complex nature of organisation processes and the challenge of adapting to the continually evolving Industry 4.0.

Originality/value

This research proposes the HyDAPI framework as a flexible and adaptable approach for quality management practitioners to implement digitalisation. This was developed because of the gap in research regarding the lack of procedures guiding organisations in their digital transition to Industry 4.0.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the mediating effect of innovative culture in the relationship between transformational leadership and workplace digitalisation; and the moderating effect of rewards and recognition on the transformational leadership–innovative culture relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 256 valid samples were used in the structural equation modeling tests. The respondents were management-level executives from companies in Selangor/Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Findings

The findings reveal that the transformational leadership–workplace digitalisation relationship is mediated by innovative culture. Besides, rewards and recognition moderate the transformational leadership–innovative culture relationship.

Practical implications

This study unpacks the black box to the practitioners how the prominent organisational factors interplay in shaping employees' perception and acceptance of workplace digitalisation.

Originality/value

The findings also enrich the interdisciplinary literature on how transformational leadership, rewards-recognition, and innovative culture intersect with employees' perception and acceptance of workplace digitalisation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper is aimed at describing and analysing what school organisers express when they network to expand the access and application of digital technologies in educational systems. Digital technologies develop rapidly in society, creating challenges and opportunities in people’s lives. Schools have an important task: to prepare young people for a future permeated by digital technology.

Design/methodology/approach

Participant observations and semi-structured interviews were used to describe and analyse how school organisers describe digitalisation work in the educational system.

Findings

The findings show that school organisers describe digital competence and providing support to schools as being important for expanding the access and application of digital technologies in the educational system. They also talk about equality connected to digitalisation work, changes in organisations, the importance of a holistic perspective, and a gold thread. They furthermore explain that networks, a sharing culture, good relations, and good communication enable digitalisation work. In addition, they point out that the lack of time, attitudes towards digital technologies, the lack of digital competence, and resistance to change are some of the constraints for digital technologies in the educational system.

Practical implications

School organisers need to implement digitalisation policies, which can be problematic because they work strategically to support operational activities.

Originality/value

This paper contributes knowledge about school organisers’ work to expand the access and application of digital technologies in the educational system.

Almost all sectors benefit from digital technologies; however, there are also challenges about digitalization which encounters conflicts. These conflicts are either macro-level or related to digitalization of business processes. With efficient functioning of governmental policies, macro-level conflicts could be diminished or prevented. Conflicts arising from business process could be avoided by improvement of business relations.

Introduction: The rapid technological changes have significantly decentralised the economy and social life in the last 20 years. The transformation into the digital environment and its socio-economic consequences may experience numerous issues depending on the level of development of countries. The experience of developed countries shows that digitalisation delivers a positive impact on economic development (because of increased labour productivity, transparency and reduction of the shadow economy). In fact, on the other side, economic development represent the improvement of people’s well-being.

However, it is, furthermore, the fact that delays in the process of transformation into the digital environment will lead to economic decline and as a result, social problems. Many current studies focus on the social consequences and benefits of digitalisation. In many cases, the social consequences of digitalisation (unemployment and income inequality) are exaggerated. The authors believe that the economic and social benefits (measurable and non-measurable) of digitalisation are enormous. Examples could be introduced as the emergence of new intelligent professions and specialties, the comfort of jobs and life, the ability to get the products, information and knowledge from anywhere in the world.

The history of the development of society shows that people have always been interested in the ‘comfort’ of life. It is the acceleration of digitalisation in recent years that has stated a significant place in this process.

Objective: To adequately assess the relationship between digitalisation and the comfort of life, the improvement of welfare (income, secure life and satisfaction) and to indicate the social benefits of digitalisation on a scientific basis.

Method: To identify measurable and unmeasurable factors and benefits of technological change on human life, to assess the impact of digitalisation on economic growth, income, labour productivity, intellectual development, knowledge capital and health care.

Findings: Although digitalisation will endure a number of social consequences in the short and medium term, but the well-being of people will be improved and life will be turned on more delightful, and incomes increased in the long term.

In this chapter, we connect our focus — the organizing of marketing — to one of the strongest drivers for its change — digitalization — and draw attention to various “dual forces” that affect marketing as a consequence. These dual forces are associated with the concept of ambidexterity. Given that companies today are affected by digitalization, both internally in their organizations and in their external business relations, and that they need to act as ambidextrous organizations handling both old (“analog”) and new (“digital”) situations, how does this affect marketing, in general, and the organizing of marketing, in particular?

The chapter will be founded on the assumptions that digitalization is a central driver of change in business and society today, and this digitalization requires organizations to explore new opportunities while still operating with mature technologies in mature markets. Marketing most often has a central role in this situation of digitalization. The connection between digitalization processes, ambidextrous organizations, and the processes of organizing marketing is the focus of this chapter.

The subject is wide, and the aim of the chapter is to generate ideas on some potential consequences for marketing management and organization. The chapter ends with a set of propositions serving as starting points for further studies of the links between digitalization, marketing management and organization, as well as the forces resulting from digitalization.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the impact and mechanism of digital development on enterprise labor productivity. In addition, this study empirically analyzes the nonlinear impact of digitalization on labor productivity.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses a fixed effect model, a mediation effect model and a panel threshold model to test the theoretical hypothesis of this study.

Findings

The results demonstrated that digitalization had a promotional effect on labor productivity, with approximately 18% of this effect achieved through transmission and influence on human capital. In addition, the novelty of this study lies in the discovery that digitization has an obvious nonlinear positive effect on corporate labor productivity. The results suggest that companies should increase investment in data-driven innovation capabilities, improve the implementation of digital talent training plans, improve their financing capacity and strengthen corporate internal management, while the government should provide appropriate policy support differently for various enterprises.

Originality/value

This study takes China’s Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies as the research object, systematically examines the impact and mechanism of digital development on enterprise labor productivity and explores the nonlinear relationship between digitalization and enterprise labor productivity, which is a new angle.

本文旨在探讨数字化发展对企业劳动生产率的影响及其机制。此外, 本研究实证分析了数字化对劳动生产率的非线性影响。

研究设计/方法/途径

本文采用固定效应模型、中介效应模型和面板门槛模型来检验本研究的理论假设。

研究发现

结果表明, 数字化对劳动生产率有促进作用, 其中约 18% 是通过对人力资本的传导和影响来实现的。此外, 本文的新颖之处在于发现了数字化对企业劳动生产率具有显著的非线性正效应。结果表明, 企业应加大对数据驱动创新能力的投入, 完善数字化人才培养计划的实施, 提高融资能力, 加强企业内部管理, 政府应针对各类企业提供差异化的政策支持。

研究原创性

本研究以中国沪深A股上市公司为研究对象, 系统考察了数字化发展对企业劳动生产率的影响和机制, 探讨了数字化与企业劳动生产率之间的非线性关系, 这是一个新的研究角度。
