Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to substantiate the perspectives of using remote education as a means of restoring Russian recessing regions’ economy and develop framework recommendations for this.

Design/methodology/approach

The set goal is achieved by finding the dependence of the values of indicators of socio-economic development on the level of development of education in Russian regions. The methods of regression and correlation analysis are used for that.

Findings

The findings showed a moderate direct connection between the development of education and socio-economic position of the region if found. Qualitative analysis allowed substantiating large perspectives of using remote education as a means of restoring Russian recessing regions’ economy, which have two manifestations. The first one is related to the increase of accessibility of educational services in Russian regions. Due to this, the potential of development of region’s human potential is better realized. Being one of the key resources in the conditions of knowledge economy, human resources stimulate the activation of entrepreneurial activities, growth of labor efficiency and innovational activity of region’s companies. The second manifestation envisages the formation of entrepreneurship in the sphere of remote education as a growth vector and source of competitive advantages of recessing region’s economy. This opens possibilities for the formation of knowledge economy in region and supporting its high competitiveness. Low capital intensity of entrepreneurship in the sphere of remote education makes it accessible for development even in recessing regions, stimulating the growth of the volume of tax revenues into the regional state budget and formation of its positive balance.

Originality/value

For the practical implementation of the determined large perspectives of using remote education as a means of restoring Russian recessing regions’ economy, authors’ framework recommendations are offered, which are aimed at the improvement of normative and legal conditions for the conduct of entrepreneurial activities in the sphere of remote education, information support for this entrepreneurship and its marketing support and promotion as a basis of region’s economy’s competitiveness.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the influences of recess configurations on the performances of high-speed hybrid journal bearing. Hybrid journal bearing earns increasing attention in high-speed machine tool spindle owing to its intrinsic outstanding performances of low temperature rise and high stability.

Design/methodology/approach

To investigate the coupled effects of temperature, turbulence and the interaction between lubricant and journal/bearing bush, a thermal fluid-structure interaction approach is presented and validated by the experimental results.

Findings

Ladder-type recess has excellent tribological characteristics in decreasing temperature rise, improving stability and inhibiting cavitation, which are all beneficial to improve the performances of high-speed spindle system.

Originality/value

This work can be a valuable guide for the future high-speed hybrid journal bearing design.

Abstract

Purpose

The present paper proposes a theoretical analysis of the stability characteristics of a Jeffcott rotor‐hybrid bearing system. It is intended that on the basis of the numerical results drawn from this study, appropriate recess depth, land size, orifice location and speed parameter for stable operation can be determined for use in the bearing design process.

Design/methodology/approach

A Jeffcott rotor supported by hybrid oil film bearings with dual‐row recesses and orifice‐ compensated restrictors is studied. In order to facilitate the calculation of film dynamics, using the perturbation method, the Reynolds equation was linearized and subsequently solved using finite difference techniques, whilst the stability maps were determined by the Routh‐Hurwitz method.

Findings

The data reported here suggest that the stability characteristics of the Jeffcott rotor‐bearing system could be improved by the use of shallow, dual‐recessed hybrid bearings with orifice compensation. In addition to greater eccentricity ratios, smaller land‐width ratios and greater shaft stiffness may also provide shallow‐recessed bearings with better stability. In all cases, the stability provided by upstream orifice‐sited bearings is better than that provided by center orifice‐sited bearings, whilst high‐speed parameters may also provide a greater stability threshold.

Originality/value

This study proposes an extensive database as a critical requirement in the design of hybrid bearings, in order to ensure that a rotor bearing system is operating stably.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop an assessment strategy for fire damaged infrastructures based on the implementation of quick diagnostic techniques and consistent interpretation procedures, so to determine the residual safety margin and any need for repair works.

Design/methodology/approach

In this perspective, several tailored non-destructive test (NDT) methods have been developed in the past two decades, providing immediate results, with no need for time-consuming laboratory analyses. Moreover, matching their indications with the calculated effects of a tentative fire scenario allows harmonizing distinct pieces of evidence in the coherent physical framework of fire dynamics and heat transfer.

Findings

This approach was followed in the investigations on a concrete overpass in Verona (Italy) after a coach violently impacted one supporting pillar and caught fire in 2017. Technical specifications of the vehicle made it possible to bound the acceptable ranges for fire load and maximum rate of heat release, while surveillance video footage indicated the duration of the burning stage. Some established NDT methods (evaluation of discolouration, de-hydroxylation and rebar hardness) were implemented, together with advanced ultrasonic tests based on pulse refraction and pulse-echo tomography.

Originality/value

The results clearly showed the extension of the most damaged area at the intrados of the box girders and validated the maximum heating depth, as predicted by numerical analysis of the heat transient ensuing from the localized fire model.

Abstract

Purpose

A cross-platform paradigm (computing model), which combines the graphical user interface of MATLAB and parallel Fortran programming, for fluid-film lubrication analysis is proposed. The purpose of this paper is to take the advantages of effective multithreaded computing of OpenMP and MATLAB’s user-friendly interface and real-time display capability.

Design/methodology/approach

A validation of computing performance of MATLAB and Fortran coding for solving two simple sliders by iterative solution methods is conducted. The online display of the particles’ search process is incorporated in the MATLAB coding, and the execution of the air foil bearing optimum design is conducted by using OpenMP multithreaded computing in the background. The optimization analysis is conducted by particle swarm optimization method for an air foil bearing design.

Findings

It is found that the MATLAB programs require prolonged execution times than those by using Fortran computing in iterative methods. The execution time of the air foil bearing optimum design is significantly minimized by using the OpenMP computing. As a result, the cross-platform paradigm can provide a useful graphical user interface. And very little code rewritting of the original numerical models is required, which is usually optimized for either serial or parallel computing.

Research limitations/implications

Iterative methods are commonly applied in fluid-film lubrication analyses. In this study, iterative methods are used as the solution methods, which may not be an effective way to compute in the MATLAB’s setting.

Originality/value

In this study, a cross-platform paradigm consisting of a standalone MATLAB and Fortran codes is proposed. The approach combines the best of the two paradigms and each coding can be modified or maintained independently for different applications.

About 26,000 Airey Houses were erected during the post war years (1946–55) as part of the house building programme of that period. The Airey House is essentially a prefabricated concrete structure which was erected on site to form a box. This box was erected upon a concrete raft which acted as the foundation and floor of the dwelling. The basic box was formed from several framed ‘goal posts’ to which thin concrete cladding panels were fastened to the upright columns by copper wire. The vertical loading from the first floor and roof is taken on the vertical columns but may also be shared with the concrete cladding panels (see Figure 1).

Abstract

Recent interest in high temperature lubrication, in particular liquid metal lubrication, has prompted an investigation of the possible use of hydromagnetic effects to increase bearing pressurisation and load capacity. It has been found that by applying an external magnetic field along with an external current source a significant increase in pressurisation can be achieved over the hydrodynamical bearing. With the application of a magnetic field alone, that is under open circuit conditions, no appreciable pressurisation can be achieved except for extremely large magnetic fields. Several bearing geometries are analysed, the journal bearing, thrust bearing, and slider bearing, all with the same general conclusions. Various possible magnetic field and electrode configurations are discussed.

Purpose

Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) has attracted much attention recently because of its importance as a nano-scale finishing process for high value-added large components that are used in the aerospace industry. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The characteristics of aluminum nanoparticles slurry including oxidizer, oxidizer contents, abrasive contents, slurry flow rate, and polishing time on aluminum nanoparticles CMP performance, including material removal amount and surface morphology were studied.

Findings

Experimental results indicate that the CMP performance depends strongly on the oxidizer, oxidizer contents, and abrasive contents. Surface polished by slurries that contain nano-Al abrasives had a lower surface average roughness (Ra), lower topographical variations and less scratching. The material removal amount and the Ra were 124 and 7.61 nm with appropriate values of the process parameters of the oxidizer, oxidizer content, abrasive content, slurry flow rate and polishing time which were H2O2, 2 wt.%, 1 wt.%, 10 ml/min, 5 min, respectively.

Originality/value

Based on SEM determinations of the process parameters for the polishing of the surfaces, the CMP mechanism was deduced preliminarily.
