Abstract

Purpose

A brief review of earlier studies on the productivity scenario of Indian industry shows that most of the studies analysed are confined to either parametric approach or growth accounting approach of measuring productivity. At the same time, the few studies based on the non-parametric [namely, Malmquist productivity index (MPI)] overlook the returns to scale conditions as well as the bias involved in the estimation of distance functions. Given this backdrop, this study aims to provide a robust measure of productivity, which considers the returns to scale assumptions and correct for the bias involved in the estimation of productivity.

Design/methodology/approach

This study empirically tests for the returns to scale that exists in the chemical and chemical products industry in India. The test result suggests that Ray and Desli (1997) approach of MPI is the appropriate one for the present context. Initially, the conventional Ray and Desli (1997) estimation and decomposition of MPI for the period 2001 to 2017 is being used. Subsequently, to correct for the bias in the estimation of efficiency scores used for the estimation of MPI, the bootstrapping algorithm of Simar and Wilson (2007) has been extended into the context of MPI estimation.

Findings

The results from the conventional Malmquist productivity estimates testifies to an improvement of total factor productivity (TFP) in seven out of 16 years under consideration. On the contrary, TFP growth is recorded only in the four years throughout the period after the bias correction. A greater discrepancy between the two measures has been found in the case of scale change factor component of MPI.

Practical implications

The technical change (TC) component positively influences TFP, whereas scale change factor (SCF) deteriorates the TFP condition of this industry. It will be appropriate for these firms to identify and operate under an optimal scale of operation, along with reaping the benefits of technological change. From a methodological perspective, researchers should consider the potential bias that arise in estimation of TFP and use a larger sample whenever possible.

Originality/value

This paper brings in a new perspective to the existing literature on industrial productivity. As against earlier studies, this study empirically tests the returns to scale of the sector under consideration and uses the most appropriate approach to measure productivity. The effect of sampling bias on TFP and its components is analysed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the evolution of interconnectedness of European insurers among themselves, as well as with other non-financial firms, for the period 2000–2021 and to analyze the stock return movements around the costliest catastrophic events (hurricanes) in the past two decades.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper follows the “simple” approach of Patro et al.(2013) and examines the daily stock return correlations of the largest 30 insurers and the largest 30 non-financial firms headquartered in Europe. In addition, the study uses event study methodology to examine stock return movements around the costliest hurricanes.

Findings

We find that the European insurance sector has become highly interconnected during the past two decades; however, its increasing connectedness with non-financial firms is limited to a few firms. In addition, we find weak evidence of the destabilizing effects of catastrophic events on European insurers and non-financial firms; however, the potential for cat risk contagion effects exists as the insurance industry becomes heavily interconnected.

Originality/value

The extant literature is largely concerned with the contribution of the insurance sector to the systemic risk of the financial sector. We focus on a specific region (Europe) and analyze the evolution of interconnectedness of the largest insurers within the insurance sector as well as with the largest non-financial firms encapsulating important crisis periods. In addition, we relate to the literature that examines the market reactions around catastrophic events to test the relevance of traditional insurance activities in instigating potential contagion shocks.

Abstract

Purpose

Since the biomedical implants with an improved compressive strength, near bone elastic modulus, controlled porosity, and sufficient surface roughness, can assist in long term implantation. Therefore, the fine process tuning plays its crucial role to develop optimal settings to achieve these desired properties. This paper aims to find applications for fine process tuning in laser powder bed fusion of biomedical Ti alloys for load-bearing implants.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, the parametric porosity simulations were initially performed to simulate the process-induced porosity for selective laser-melted Ti6Al4V as per full factorial design. Continually, the experiments were performed to validate the simulation results and perform multiresponse optimization to fine-tune the processing parameters. Three levels of each control variable, namely, laser power – Pl (180, 190, 200) W, scanning speed – Vs (1500, 1600, 1700) mm/s and scan orientation – ϴ{1(0,0), 2(0,67°), 3(0,90°)} were used to investigate the processing performance. The measured properties from this study include compressive yield strength, elastic modulus, process-induced porosity and surface roughness. Finally, confirmatory experiments and comparisons with the already published works were also performed to validate the research results.

Findings

The results of porosity parametric simulation and experiments in selective laser melting of Ti6Al4V were found close to each other with overall porosity (less than 10%). The fine process tuning was resulted in optimal settings [Pl (200 W), Vs (1500 mm/s), ϴ (0,90°)], [Pl (200 W), Vs (1500 mm/s), ϴ (0,67°)], [Pl (200 W), Vs (1500 mm/s), ϴ (0,0)] and [Pl (200 W), Vs (1500 mm/s), ϴ (0,0)] with higher compressive strength (672.78 MPa), near cortical bone elastic modulus (12.932 GPa), process-induced porosity (0.751%) and minimum surface roughness (2.72 µm). The morphology of the selective laser melted (SLMed) surface indicated that the lack of fusion pores was prominent because of low laser energy density among the laser and powder bed. Confirmatory experimentation revealed that an overall percent improvement of around 15% was found between predicted and the experimental values.

Originality/value

Since no significant works are available on the collaborative optimization and fine process tuning in laser powder bed fusion of biomedical Ti alloys for different load bearing implants. Therefore, this work involves the comprehensive investigation and multi-objective optimization to determine optimal parametric settings for better mechanical and physical properties. Another novel aspect is the parametric porosity simulation using Ansys Additive to assist in process parameters and their levels selection. As a result, selective laser melted Ti alloys at optimal settings may help in examining the possibility for manufacturing metallic implants for load-bearing applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to craft a non-parametric composite value for the board quality of Indian banks where the weights can be assigned endogenously.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed a non-parametric data envelopment analysis (DEA)-based novel extension known as the benefit of doubt approach. To measure the strength of the Indian bank corporate board in terms of board efficiency (BEF), the study used a mixed approach, i.e. first, the study calculates the percentile ranks of the five attributes that the study assumes are the characteristics of the strong board including board size, number of outside directors, frequency of meetings, non-duality leadership and board gender diversity. Thereafter, the study performs the benefit-to-doubt approach to finally measure the efficiency of the board.

Findings

The findings of the study establish that the methodological framework present in the study to measure the strength of the board in terms of BEF has been a much superior method over the other weighted and non-weighted linear average methods.

Practical implications

This methodology aids the shareholders, investors and regulatory bodies in rating the Indian banks based on their strength in terms of better monitoring boards and ensuring a smooth agent–owner relationship.

Originality/value

The benefit of doubt approach has been a unique and novel methodology to craft the composite value for any multidimensional phenomenon. One of the major benefits of using this approach is that it assigns the weights endogenously to each dimension and thereafter collectively determines the efficiency of such a phenomenon.

Abstract

Purpose

This study uses computer-aided design to improve the ecological and environmental sustainability of early-stage landscape designs. Urban expansion on open land and natural habitats has led to a decline in biodiversity and increased climate change impacts, affecting urban inhabitants' quality of life and well-being. While sustainability indicators have been employed to assess the performance of buildings and neighbourhoods, landscape designs' ecological and environmental sustainability has received comparatively less attention, particularly in early-design stages where applying sustainability approaches is impactful.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors propose a computation framework for evaluating key landscape sustainability indicators and providing real-time feedback to designers. The method integrates spatial indicators with widely recognized sustainability rating system credits. A specialized tool was developed for measuring biomass optimization, precipitation management and urban heat mitigation, and a proof-of-concept experiment tested the tool's effectiveness on three Mediterranean neighbourhood-level designs.

Findings

The results show a clear connection between the applied design strategy to the indicator behaviour. This connection enhances the ability to establish sustainability benchmarks for different types of landscape developments using parametric design.

Practical implications

The study allows non-expert designers to measure and embed landscape sustainability early in the design stages, thus lowering the entry level for incorporating biodiversity enhancement and climate mitigation approaches.

Originality/value

This study expands the parametric vocabulary for measuring landscape sustainability by introducing spatial ecosystem services and architectural sustainability indicators on a unified platform, enabling the integration of critical climate and biodiversity-loss solutions earlier in the development process.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine in depth the impact of merger activities on banks in Saudi Arabia.

Design/methodology/approach

Event study, financial ratio and efficient frontier analyses with a mixture of parametric and non-parametric tests are used for the sample period 2016Q1–2022Q4.

Findings

Event study analysis shows that merging banks (bidders) have higher positive cumulative abnormal returns than merged banks (targets), indicating that investors believe that bidding banks will benefit the most from the merger strategy. It was also found that the efficiency measures of the combined banks of Saudi British Bank and Alawwal Bank deteriorated, while they improved for the combined banks of National Commercial Bank and Saudi American Bank in the post-merger period, confirming investors' views.

Research limitations/implications

Although the study focuses on the Saudi banking sector, its findings could be generalized to other banks in the region, as the Saudi banking sector is one of the largest in the Middle East region and is expected to grow further in the future.

Practical implications

The mere act of merging two banks does not guarantee the realization of cost synergies or efficiency gains. This research shows that mergers are not automatically cost-effective and that their success depends on good integration and restructuring strategies.

Originality/value

To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first study to provide a comprehensive analysis of the short- and long-term impacts of merger activities in the Saudi banking sector.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to quantify the evolutionary mechanism of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) impact on international construction multi-projects.

Design/methodology/approach

From three concepts of complexity, stressor and detractor risks, a multi-project simulation model under COVID-19 outbreak is proposed to study the characteristics of contingency with three peaks of ordered and disordered states. Specially, COVID-19 brings forth mitigation fee, epidemic prevention fee, holdup fee and schedule delay fee of multi-projects. By integrating parametric model, Monte Carlo and chaos theory, a comparative analysis of its contingency with or without COVID-19 is conducted. Summarizing the simulated results, their total contingencies at certain risk tolerance are obtained at two status of static at one-time point and dynamic over time. Meanwhile, some major risks including detractors, complexities and stressors are screened out for mitigation, especially for epidemic prevention and control. Eventually, the real case is illustrated to demonstrate its validity.

Findings

It provides a quantitative analysis framework for the impact of epidemic, a once-in-a-century black swan event with a long tail, on construction multi-projects.

Practical implications

It conduct an effective model to quantify impacts of COVID-19 on international construction multi-projects for implementing effective counter-measures, which lay foundation for claims among different stakeholders.

Originality/value

The term of detractor risk is applied to describe COVID-19 and quantify its impact upon international construction multi-projects. Further, a hybrid model by integrating parametric model and Monte Carlo in type I/II model is proposed to simulate their contingencies at disordered states. Finally, the simulated outcomes of these models are used to guide effective risk control to meet the requirements by the client.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the performance of India's food processing sector by estimating its output growth, technical efficiency (TE) and input-driven growth (IDG)

Design/methodology/approach

This study used panel data from six food processing manufacturing industries for the period 2000–01 to 2017–18. Technical efficiency and input-driven growth was measured using the parametric half-normal stochastic frontier production function.

Findings

The findings of this study showed that the estimated average technical efficiency is 86.6%, which specifies that the Indian food processing sector is technically inefficient. In addition, the output growth rate is 5.5%, driven by high doses of inputs (5.7%), whereas there is no indication of constant returns to scale. However, the food processing sector has experienced more input-driven expansion than either technological or efficiency changes.

Research limitations/implications

This study is limited to India's organized manufacturing food processing sector; the aggregate macro data at a three-digit level based on the national industrial classification (NIC) was used. This study provides robust estimates for industrialists and processors, as well as concrete policy formulations on how overdoses of inputs may lead to high exploitation of resources, whereas outputs can be augmented by implementing upgraded and new technologies.

Originality/value

Previous research has estimated the total factor productivity and technical efficiency only in order to analyze the food sector's performance, but none of the studies have evaluated the share of inputs in growth performance and efficiency. Therefore, this study contributes by measuring growth performance and the share of inputs in the growth performance of India's food processing sector.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to analyse the trait emotional intelligence (TEI) of business students of various programmes. This study aims to answer the question, to what extent these future leaders are uniformly equipped with essential emotional intelligence competences, necessary in the VUCA world.

Design/methodology/approach

The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue) was used to measure TEI of 120 business students. Spearman's and Tau–Kendall's rank correlation coefficients show the strength of the correlation between age and TEI level. The non-parametric Mann–Whitney U test was employed to evaluate the consistency of TEI-level distributions in selected subgroups of respondents.

Findings

Future business leaders and management specialists are unequally prepared to manage teams and organizational change effectively. Their TEI distribution is significantly different regarding the type of programme of study. Students of “social fields” (Management, Communication and Psychology in Business) show higher TEI than students of “analytical fields” (Economics, Finance and Accounting, Logistics). Master's students are characterized by higher TEI compared to undergraduates. However, there were no statistically significant differences in TEI between: full-time and part-time, female and male, as well as working and non-working students.

Practical implications

The results provide valuable guidance for organizations recruiting junior managers and for business universities.

Originality/value

This research was based on a well-established concept of emotional intelligence using a reliable research tool. The obtained results complement the existing research on TEI of various professional groups and provide a precious reference point for future, more in-depth analyses of TEI.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims at evaluating the technical efficiency (TE) of healthcare systems in the Arab region and exploring the key factors that affect the efficiency performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The study applies a two-stage Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach to a sample of 20 Arab countries. In the first stage, a DEA model is used to calculate the TE scores of the examined healthcare systems in 2019 and 2010, following both the output and input orientations of efficiency. In the second stage, a censored Tobit model is estimated to investigate the determinants of healthcare efficiency.

Findings

DEA results of 2019 indicate that achievable efficiency gains of the Arab countries range from 0.4% to 16% under the output and input orientations, respectively. Six countries are efficient under both orientations. Although the average efficiency scores of the Arab countries have deteriorated between 2010 and 2019, Djibouti and Sudan had the greatest efficiency improvements between the two years. Bahrain, Mauritania, Morocco and Qatar proved to be efficient in 2010 and 2019 under the two orientations of efficiency and according to the two DEA specifications followed. The Tobit model reveals that corruption and government health expenditure tend to have an adverse impact on healthcare efficiency.

Originality/value

The author evaluates healthcare efficiency and healthcare's efficiency determinants in the Arab countries. Regardless Arab countries' diversity, these countries are facing common health challenges, including diminishing role of governments in healthcare financing; increased out-of-pocket healthcare spending; poor healthcare outputs and prevalence of health inequities resulting from weak governance institutions. Comparing the efficiency of healthcare systems between 2010 and 2019 gives insights on the potential impact of the Arab spring uprisings on healthcare efficiency. Moreover, examining the determinants of healthcare efficiency allows for better understanding of how to improve the efficiency of healthcare systems in the region.
