Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to implement and extend the You Only Live Once (YOLO) algorithm for detection of objects and activities. The advantage of YOLO is that it only runs a neural network once to detect the objects in an image, which is why it is powerful and fast. Cameras are found at many different crossroads and locations, but video processing of the feed through an object detection algorithm allows determining and tracking what is captured. Video Surveillance has many applications such as Car Tracking and tracking of people related to crime prevention. This paper provides exhaustive comparison between the existing methods and proposed method. Proposed method is found to have highest object detection accuracy.

Design/methodology/approach

The goal of this research is to develop a deep learning framework to automate the task of analyzing video footage through object detection in images. This framework processes video feed or image frames from CCTV, webcam or a DroidCam, which allows the camera in a mobile phone to be used as a webcam for a laptop. The object detection algorithm, with its model trained on a large data set of images, is able to load in each image given as an input, process the image and determine the categories of the matching objects that it finds. As a proof of concept, this research demonstrates the algorithm on images of several different objects. This research implements and extends the YOLO algorithm for detection of objects and activities. The advantage of YOLO is that it only runs a neural network once to detect the objects in an image, which is why it is powerful and fast. Cameras are found at many different crossroads and locations, but video processing of the feed through an object detection algorithm allows determining and tracking what is captured. For video surveillance of traffic cameras, this has many applications, such as car tracking and person tracking for crime prevention. In this research, the implemented algorithm with the proposed methodology is compared against several different prior existing methods in literature. The proposed method was found to have the highest object detection accuracy for object detection and activity recognition, better than other existing methods.

Findings

The results indicate that the proposed deep learning–based model can be implemented in real-time for object detection and activity recognition. The added features of car crash detection, fall detection and social distancing detection can be used to implement a real-time video surveillance system that can help save lives and protect people. Such a real-time video surveillance system could be installed at street and traffic cameras and in CCTV systems. When this system would detect a car crash or a fatal human or pedestrian fall with injury, it can be programmed to send automatic messages to the nearest local police, emergency and fire stations. When this system would detect a social distancing violation, it can be programmed to inform the local authorities or sound an alarm with a warning message to alert the public to maintain their distance and avoid spreading their aerosol particles that may cause the spread of viruses, including the COVID-19 virus.

Originality/value

This paper proposes an improved and augmented version of the YOLOv3 model that has been extended to perform activity recognition, such as car crash detection, human fall detection and social distancing detection. The proposed model is based on a deep learning convolutional neural network model used to detect objects in images. The model is trained using the widely used and publicly available Common Objects in Context data set. The proposed model, being an extension of YOLO, can be implemented for real-time object and activity recognition. The proposed model had higher accuracies for both large-scale and all-scale object detection. This proposed model also exceeded all the other previous methods that were compared in extending and augmenting the object detection to activity recognition. The proposed model resulted in the highest accuracy for car crash detection, fall detection and social distancing detection.

Abstract

Purpose

The involvement of clients in service encounters and service development has become a central principle for contemporary health and social care organizations. However, in day-to-day work settings, the shift toward client involvement is still in progress. We examined how health and social care professionals, together with clients and managers, co-develop their conceptions of client involvement and search for practical ways in which to implement these in organizational service processes.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical case of this study was a developmental intervention, the client involvement workshop, conducted in a Finnish municipal social and welfare center. The cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) framework was used to analyze the development of client involvement ideas and the modes of interaction during the intervention.

Findings

Analysis of the collective discussion revealed that the conceptions of client involvement developed through two interconnected object-orientations: Enabling client involvement in service encounters and promoting client involvement in the service system. The predominant mode of interaction in the collective discussion was that of “coordination.” The clients' perspective and contributions were central aspects in the turning points from coordination to cooperation; professionals crossed organizational boundaries, and together with clients, constructed a new client involvement-based object. This suggests that client participation plays an important role in the development of services.

Originality/value

The CHAT-based examination of the modes of interaction clarifies the potential of co-developing client-involvement-based services and highlights the importance of clients' participation in co-development.

Abstract

Purpose

Assistive technology has been developed to assist the visually impaired individuals in their social interactions. Specifically designed to enhance communication skills, facilitate social engagement and improve the overall quality of life, conversational assistive technologies include speech recognition APIs, text-to-speech APIs and various communication tools that are real. Enable real-time interaction. Using natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning algorithms, the technology analyzes spoken language and provides appropriate responses, offering an immersive experience through voice commands, audio feedback and vibration alerts.

Design/methodology/approach

These technologies have demonstrated their ability to promote self-confidence and self-reliance in visually impaired individuals during social interactions. Moreover, they promise to improve social competence and foster better relationships. In short, assistive technology in conversation stands as a promising tool that empowers the visually impaired individuals, elevating the quality of their social engagement.

Findings

The main benefit of assistive communication technology is that it will help visually impaired people overcome communication barriers in social contexts. This technology helps them communicate effectively with acquaintances, family, co-workers and even strangers in public places. By enabling smoother and more natural communication, it works to reduce feelings of isolation and increase overall quality of life.

Originality/value

Research findings include successful activity recognition, aligning with activities on which the VGG-16 model was trained, such as hugging, shaking hands, talking, walking, waving and more. The originality of this study lies in its approach to address the challenges faced by the visually impaired individuals in their social interactions through modern technology. Research adds to the body of knowledge in the area of assistive technologies, which contribute to the empowerment and social inclusion of the visually impaired individuals.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to develop an automated and optimization algorithms (OAs)-integrated 4D building information modeling (BIM) approach and a prototype and enable construction managers and practitioners to estimate the time of compound elements in building projects using the resource specification technique.

Design/methodology/approach

A 4D BIM estimation process was first developed by applying the resource specification and geometric information from the BIM model. A suite of OA including particle swarm optimization, ant colony, differential evolution and genetic algorithm were developed and compared in order to facilitate and automate the estimation process. The developed processes and porotypes were linked and integrated.

Findings

The OA-based automated 4D BIM estimation prototype was developed and validated through a real-life construction project. Different OAs were applied and compared, and the genetic algorithm was found as the best performing one. The prototype was successfully linked with BIM timeliner application. By using this approach, the start and finish dates of all object-based activities are developed, and the project completion time is automatically estimated.

Originality/value

Unlike conventional construction estimation methods which need various tools and are error prone and time-consuming, the developed method bypasses the existing time estimation tools and provides the integrated and automated process with BIM and machine learning algorithms. Furthermore, this approach integrates 4D BIM applications into construction design procedures, connected with OA automation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to compare methodologies for mapping a historic building, with image capture by smartphones and drones, using photogrammetric techniques for three-dimensional (3D) modeling of the structure. Processes and products are also analyzed, as well as possibilities for storing and visualizing data for structuring a cadastre of historical and artistic heritage are studied.

Design/methodology/approach

For mapping with smartphones, the overlapping of photographs was guaranteed, with data acquisition using three different cameras, on the same date as the aerial survey. The models were made from different combinations of camera use. For storage, a conceptual model based on ISO 19.152:2012 is proposed, which was implemented in the MongoDB, resulting in a database for storage. The visualization was carried out on the Cesium ion platform.

Findings

The results indicate that the terrestrial 3D reconstruction using smartphones is an efficient alternative to the historical and artistic cadastre, presenting texture quality superior to the aerial survey in a shorter production time. When dealing with the conceptual model, the LADM (Land Administration Domain Model) standardization guarantees interoperability and facilitates data exchange. In addition, it proved to be flexible for the creation of thematic profiles, supporting their effective storage. The insertion of data in the visualization platform was simple and effective, and it even generated sharing links for visualization of the models.

Originality/value

The study analyses a low-cost method with the use of easily accessible devices, with a combination of methodologies and applied techniques. The data storage and visualization method is also simple and flexible, suitable for application in the cadastre of historical heritage.

Abstract

Purpose

A quantitative theoretical model is proposed to measure how productivity performance can be affected by strategic decisions related to specific competitive priorities.

Design/methodology/approach

This study proposes the Primary Transformation Model (PTM) and an equation to measure cause-and-effect relationships between productivity and competitive priorities.

Findings

The interdependence between productivity and competitive priorities was studied using the PTM and the proposed model indicates that strategies that improve external performance also impact internal productivity. It was also observed that the compatibility between competitive priorities depends on the initial manufacturing conditions and the implementation method adopted.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed model is theoretical and, as such, is an abstraction of reality and does not consider all possible aspects. It consists of a novel approach that still requires further empirical testing. The PTM provides insights about the trade-offs between productivity and strategic objectives, as well, contributes to the ongoing research on manufacturing strategy and can be further developed in future studies.

Practical implications

The main practical implication is to allow companies to relate their strategic decisions to their productivity performance.

Social implications

This research also contributes to societal issues by enabling firms to better align strategic objectives and operations, which ultimately allows offering products more suited to the needs of customers, thus making better use of the required resources and favoring economic growth.

Originality/value

The model proposed allows objective assessment of actions aiming at operational efficiency and effectiveness, in addition to providing insights into cause-and-effect relationships between productivity and competitive priorities. The model can also be used in empirical investigations on manufacturing strategy.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the public’s acceptance of film-induced tourism and develops the relationship among placement marketing, involvement, place attachment and travel intention. The film Your Love Song shot in the Hualien and Taitung regions in Taiwan was selected as the case study.

Design/methodology/approach

An online sample survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire, and statistical tests and overall structural equation modeling analysis using the SPSS and AMOS statistical software packages, respectively, were performed.

Findings

This study results demonstrate that destination placement marketing has a significant positive effect on the level of destination involvement, place attachment and travel intention of viewers. Moreover, the level of involvement has some intermediary effect on the interrelationship between placement marketing and travel intention. Hence, this study suggests that relevant government agencies and tourism operators should promote local tourism through films and television shows and attract more tourists by retaining the original shooting scenes.

Originality/value

While previous studies have only analyzed two or three of the four concepts of film-induced tourism, placement marketing, travel intention, involvement and place attachment, this study completely integrates these four concepts and proves the correlation between them.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the drivers that motivate employees and guests' hotel service participation to understand how that can influence the implementation of Value Co-Creation (VCC) in sub-Saharan African context.

Design/methodology/approach

Using an interpretive paradigm, the study draws on 32 in-depth interviews, 6 focus group discussions involving 32 participants and participant observation field notes. Data were analysed using thematic analysis.

Findings

The study unravels nine motives that drive employee–guest VCC participation: passion, relationship, belongingness, shared and enhanced experiences, satisfaction, reputation development, openness, communication and rewards.

Research limitations/implications

This exploratory, cross-sectional study was undertaken in hotels within sub-Saharan Africa. Thus, findings cannot be generalised. However, it provides an opportunity for future quantitative approaches within different contexts involving other stakeholders.

Practical implications

Considering the numerous challenges from COVID-19 pandemic on the service industry, hotel managers might want to use the findings to not only formulate policies that support employee–guest co-creation for service improvement and survival but also introduce enhanced innovative service practices that deliver on employee and guest service expectations for retention. The findings encourage hotel managers to identify employee and guest context-specific motivations to be able to match with value-driven service activities, aimed at attracting positive behaviours to better respond to the numerous COVID-19-related challenges.

Originality/value

This work adds to the VCC literature by investigating the collective and individual drivers at the employee and guest dyadic level within sub-Saharan African hotel context. The authors propose a comprehensive model to guide the successful implementation of employee–guest VCC.

This study aims to provide and find an alternative solution to achieving literacy indexes and financial inclusion that exceeded the target in 2019.

Design/methodology/approach

This research uses a normative research type. Secondary data becomes the primary data and uses the method of qualitative data analysis.

Findings

The results showed that public literacy and financial institutions’ inclusion were dependent on public trust in financial institutions. The Financial Services Authorities’ (FSA) arrangement’s weakness lies in the limited scope of the FSA’s authority in carrying out legal actions against unlicensed financial institutions and the low critical power of the community in choosing a credible financial institution.

Research limitations/implications

Based on the research findings, results are expected to have implications for the concept of FSA’s authority.

Practical implications

Based on the research findings, results are expected to have implications for expanding the FSA’s authority to conduct oversight of financial institutions so that the high literacy and financial inclusion of the public can achieve public welfare.

Social implications

The research implication for the community is that the results of this study find weaknesses in the financial literacy and inclusion policies to find the causes of the problems and find solutions to these problems. The practical research implications are for policymakers; research results can be used as a basis for determining solutions to problems in regulations. The results of this study can also have implications for the development of a boy of knowledge in the field of business economic law, especially economic law.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there are no researches that have similarities with this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this work is to optimize the monitoring of vibrations on dynamometric test rigs for railway brakes. This is a quite demanding application considering the continuous increase of performances of high-speed trains that involve higher testing specifications for brake pads and disks.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, authors propose a mixed approach in which relatively simple finite element models are used to support the optimization of a diagnostic system that is used to monitor vibration levels and rotor-dynamical behavior of the machine. The model is calibrated with experimental data recorded on the same rig that must be identified and monitored. The whole process is optimized to not interfere with normal operations of the rig, using common inertial sensor and tools and are available as standard instrumentation for this kind of applications. So at the end all the calibration activities can be performed normally without interrupting the activities of the rig introducing additional costs due to system unavailability.

Findings

Proposed approach was able to identify in a very simple and fast way the vibrational behavior of the investigated rig, also giving precious information concerning the anisotropic behavior of supports and their damping. All these data are quite difficult to be found in technical literature because they are quite sensitive to assembly tolerances and to many other factors. Dynamometric test rigs are an important application widely diffused for both road and rail vehicles. Also proposed procedure can be easily extended and generalized to a wide value of machine with horizontal rotors.

Originality/value

Most of the studies in literature are referred to electrical motors or turbomachines operating with relatively slow transients and constant inertial properties. For investigated machines both these conditions are not verified, making the proposed application quite unusual and original with respect to current application. At the same time, there is a wide variety of special machines that are usually marginally covered by standard testing methodologies to which the proposed approach can be successfully extended.
