Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents the problems using Laplace Adomian decomposition method (LADM) for investigating the deformation and nonlinear behavior of the large deflection problems on Euler-Bernoulli beam.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing equations will be converted to characteristic equations based on the LADM. The validity of the LADM has been confirmed by comparing the numerical results to different methods.

Findings

The results of the LADM are found to be better than the results of Adomian decomposition method (ADM), due to this method's rapid convergence and accuracy to obtain the solutions by using fewer iterative terms. LADM are presented for two examples for large deflection problems. The results obtained from example 1 shows the effects of the loading, horizontal parameters and moment parameters. Example 2 demonstrates the point loading and point angle influence on the Euler-Bernoulli beam.

Originality/value

The results of the LADM are found to be better than the results of ADM, due to this method's rapid convergence and accuracy to obtain the solutions by using fewer iterative terms.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to obtain semi-analytical solutions of similarity solutions for the nano boundary layer flows with Navier boundary condition. The similarity solutions of viscous flows over a two-dimensional stretching surface and an axisymmetric stretching surface are investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, the governing partial differential equations are transformed to a nonlinear ordinary differential equation by using some proper similarity transformations. Then an efficient semi-analytical method, the Laplace Adomian decomposition method (LADM) is applied to obtain semi-analytical solutions of the similarity solutions in both of viscous flows over a two-dimensional stretching surface and an axisymmetric stretching surface. To improve the accuracy and enlarges the convergence domain of the obtained results by the LADM, the study has combined it with Padé approximation.

Findings

Accuracy and efficiency of the presented method are illustrated and denoted through the tables and figures. Also the effects of the suction parameter λ and slip parameter K on the fluid velocity and on the tangential stress are investigated.

Originality/value

The similarity solutions of the governing partial differential equation are obtained analytically by using an efficient developed method, namely the Laplace Adomian decomposition-Padé method. The analytic solutions of nonlinear ordinary differential equation are constructed for both of viscous flows over a two-dimensional stretching surface and an axisymmetric stretching surface.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to use the Laplace Adomian decomposition method (LADM) to investigate the effects of thermal convection, thermal conduction, surface emissivity and thermal radiation on the heat dissipated by a continuously moving plate undergoing thermal processing.

Design/methodology/approach

In performing the analysis, it is assumed that the thermal conductivity and surface emissivity of the plate are both temperature-dependent. The accuracy of the LADM solutions is confirmed by comparing the results obtained for the temperature distribution within the plate with those reported in the literature based on the differential transformation method.

Findings

It is shown that the heat dissipated from the plate reduces as the Peclet number increases. By contrast, the dissipated heat increases as any one of the non-dimensionalized parameters of the system, i.e. Nc, Nr and B, increases. In addition, the temperature drop along the length of the plate reduces as parameter A increases owing to a more rapid heat transfer.

Originality/value

The results provide a useful source of reference for the choice of suitable materials and cooling fluids in a variety of practical applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose the Laplace Adomian Decomposition Method (LADM) for studying the nonlinear temperature and thermal stress analysis of annular fins with time-dependent boundary condition.

Design/methodology/approach

The nonlinear behavior of temperature and thermal stress distribution in an annular fin with rectangular profile subjected to time-dependent periodic temperature variations at the root is studied by the LADM. The radiation effect is considered. The convective heat transfer coefficient is considered as a temperature function.

Findings

The proposed solution method is helpful in overcoming the computational bottleneck commonly encountered in industry and in academia. The results show that the circumferential stress at the root of the fin will be important in the fatigue analysis.

Originality/value

This study presents an effective solution method to analyze the nonlinear behavior of temperature and thermal stress distribution in an annular fin with rectangular profile subjected to time-dependent periodic temperature variations at the root by using LADM.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to compare methodologies for mapping a historic building, with image capture by smartphones and drones, using photogrammetric techniques for three-dimensional (3D) modeling of the structure. Processes and products are also analyzed, as well as possibilities for storing and visualizing data for structuring a cadastre of historical and artistic heritage are studied.

Design/methodology/approach

For mapping with smartphones, the overlapping of photographs was guaranteed, with data acquisition using three different cameras, on the same date as the aerial survey. The models were made from different combinations of camera use. For storage, a conceptual model based on ISO 19.152:2012 is proposed, which was implemented in the MongoDB, resulting in a database for storage. The visualization was carried out on the Cesium ion platform.

Findings

The results indicate that the terrestrial 3D reconstruction using smartphones is an efficient alternative to the historical and artistic cadastre, presenting texture quality superior to the aerial survey in a shorter production time. When dealing with the conceptual model, the LADM (Land Administration Domain Model) standardization guarantees interoperability and facilitates data exchange. In addition, it proved to be flexible for the creation of thematic profiles, supporting their effective storage. The insertion of data in the visualization platform was simple and effective, and it even generated sharing links for visualization of the models.

Originality/value

The study analyses a low-cost method with the use of easily accessible devices, with a combination of methodologies and applied techniques. The data storage and visualization method is also simple and flexible, suitable for application in the cadastre of historical heritage.

Abstract

Purpose

Building information modeling (BIM) is a striking development in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry, which provides in-depth information on different stages of the building lifecycle. Real estate valuation, as a fully interconnected field with the AEC industry, can benefit from 3D technical achievements in BIM technologies. Some studies have attempted to use BIM for real estate valuation procedures. However, there is still a limited understanding of appropriate mechanisms to utilize BIM for valuation purposes and the consequent impact that BIM can have on decreasing the existing uncertainties in the valuation methods. Therefore, the paper aims to analyze the literature on BIM for real estate valuation practices.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a systematic review to analyze existing utilizations of BIM for real estate valuation practices, discovers the challenges, limitations and gaps of the current applications and presents potential domains for future investigations. Research was conducted on the Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar databases to find relevant references that could contribute to the study. A total of 52 publications including journal papers, conference papers and proceedings, book chapters and PhD and master's theses were identified and thoroughly reviewed. There was no limitation on the starting date of research, but the end date was May 2022.

Findings

Four domains of application have been identified: (1) developing machine learning-based valuation models using the variables that could directly be captured through BIM and industry foundation classes (IFC) data instances of building objects and their attributes; (2) evaluating the capacity of 3D factors extractable from BIM and 3D GIS in increasing the accuracy of existing valuation models; (3) employing BIM for accurate estimation of components of cost approach-based valuation practices; and (4) extraction of useful visual features for real estate valuation from BIM representations instead of 2D images through deep learning and computer vision.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to research efforts on utilization of 3D modeling in real estate valuation practices. In this regard, this paper presents a broad overview of the current applications of BIM for valuation procedures and provides potential ways forward for future investigations.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper critically analysed 195 articles with the objectives of providing a clear understanding of the current City Information Modelling (CIM) implementations, identifying the main challenges hampering the uptake of CIM and providing recommendations for the future development of CIM.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper adopts the PRISMA method in order to perform the systematic literature review.

Findings

The results identified nine domains of CIM implementation including (1) natural disaster management, (2) urban building energy modelling, (3) urban facility management, (4) urban infrastructure management, (5) land administration systems, (6) improvement of urban microclimates, (7) development of digital twin and smart cities, (8) improvement of social engagement and (9) urban landscaping design. Further, eight challenges were identified that hinder the widespread employment of CIM including (1) reluctance towards CIM application, (2) data quality, (3) computing resources and storage inefficiency, (4) data integration between BIM and GIS and interoperability, (5) establishing a standardised workflow for CIM implementation, (6) synergy between all parties involved, (7) cybersecurity and intellectual property and (8) data management.

Originality/value

This is the first paper of its kind that provides a holistic understanding of the current implementation of CIM. The outcomes will benefit multiple target groups. First, urban planners and designers will be supplied with a status-quo understanding of CIM implementations. Second, this research introduces possibilities of CIM deployment for the governance of cities; hence the outcomes can be useful for policymakers. Lastly, the scientific community can use the findings of this study as a reference point to gain a comprehensive understanding of the field and contribute to the future development of CIM.

Abstract

Purpose

In light of the discussions on outer space property management, this conceptual review paper aims to discuss and evaluate if, when and under which conditions certain land management and property right frameworks can apply to allocate and/or restrict property rights in outer space.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper applies a pragmatic review approach which seeks to better understand if and how the basic tenets of the land management frameworks could better shape and revise the challenges in outer space regulations.

Findings

Despite the fact that regulatory guidelines on outer space rights are existing, the analysis shows that these lack a number of practical tools and measures aiming at intervening if stakeholders do not follow the rules. With the use of land management frameworks, it is possible to derive policy options for making the outer space management more practical and action-oriented, in particular for the removal of space debris. These include amongst others more attention for formulating global public restrictions in outer space, incorporating regulatory guidelines for accessing open space regimes, addressing responsiveness and robustness in adherence and compliance to regulations

Research limitations/implications

Given the conceptual and discursive character of the paper, there are no specific empirical data, yet several recommendations for further research include expanding the boundary work between the land management and regulatory outer space domain.

Practical implications

The insights derived from land management and real estate related property theories could potentially provide new starting points for (re)formulating the regulatory framework for outer space property discourses.

Social implications

Interpreting the outer space regulations from known and practiced land management perspective helps to bridge the policy–society knowledge and necessity gap on outer space activities.

Originality/value

The specific land management perspective and discursive analysis on outer space debris provide new options for devising and extending regulatory guidelines for assigning responsibilities on outer space debris and debris rights, restrictions and responsibilities.

Abstract

The administration of a country's land system has a major impact on its economy and society. Digital land management has the potential to improve the land administration of developing countries and make it more efficient. The governments of Bangladesh and Indonesia have implemented a digital land management framework in the land system to ensure optimal land development, in particular, to deliver land services efficiently. The land offices of both countries have a variety of obstacles when it comes to delivering digital services. Because of this, it is important to recognize the current use of digitalization and identify the variables influencing digitalization in land service delivery by land offices in order to make informed decisions about their future. Content analysis was applied to gather data for the study, which used a qualitative approach. The correct deployment of digitization in land administration in both nations is being slowed down by a lack of institutional and operational capability and personnel misconduct in service delivery.
