Abstract

Purpose

In this paper, the polygonal-FEM technique is presented in modeling large deformation – large sliding contact on non-conformal meshes. The purpose of this paper is to present a new technique in modeling arbitrary interfaces and discontinuities for non-linear contact problems by capturing discontinuous deformations in elements cut by the contact surface in uniform non-conformal meshes.

Design/methodology/approach

The geometry of contact surface is used to produce various polygonal elements at the intersection of the interface with the regular FE mesh, in which the extra degrees-of-freedom are defined along the interface. The contact constraints are imposed between polygonal elements produced along the contact surface through the node-to-surface contact algorithm.

Findings

Numerical convergence analysis is carried out to study the convergence rate for various polygonal interpolation functions, including the Wachspress interpolation functions, the metric shape functions, the natural neighbor-based shape functions, and the mean value shape functions. Finally, numerical examples are solved to demonstrate the efficiency of proposed technique in modeling contact problems in large deformations.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to simulate unsteady flows with surfaces in relative motion using a multi-block structured flow solver.

Design/methodology/approach

A procedure for simulating unsteady flows with surfaces in relative motion was developed, based upon a multi-block structured U-RANS flow solver1. Meshes produced in zones of the flow field with different rotation speed are connected by sliding boundaries. The procedure developed guarantees that the flux conservation properties of the original scheme are maintained across the sliding boundaries during the rotation at every time step.

Findings

The solver turns out to be very efficient, allowing computation in scalar mode with single core processors as well as in parallel. It was tested by simulating the unsteady flow on a propfan configuration with two counter-rotating rotors. The comparison of results and performances with respect to an existing commercial flow solver (unstructured) is reported.

Originality/value

This paper fulfils an identified need to allow for efficient unsteady flow computations (structured solver) with different bodies in relative motion.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a simplified but accurate finite element procedure for the analysis of the conjugate conduction-convection heat transfer in cross-flow micro heat exchangers.

Design/methodology/approach

The velocity fields in single microchannels are calculated by solving the parabolised form of the momentum equations and later mapped onto the three-dimensional grid, corresponding to an appropriate portion of the micro heat exchanger, which is used for the solution of the energy equation in its elliptic form. To allow the use of finite elements elongated in the flow direction, layers of perpendicular microchannels can be meshed independently with grids that do not match at the common interface (domain decomposition).

Findings

An original and easy-to-implement method has been developed to deal with non-matching grids. Computed results show that increasing the number of microchannels per layer yields relative pressure drop increments that are larger than those displayed by the relative heat flow rates.

Research limitations/implications

The simplified procedure requires the assumption of constant thermophysical properties. The adopted domain decomposition technique yields non-symmetric system matrices.

Practical implications

The procedure can be very useful in the design of cross-flow micro heat exchangers.

Originality/value

The finite element procedure described in the paper requires only limited computational resources for the analysis of the conjugate conduction-convection heat transfer in cross-flow micro heat exchangers with a large number of microchannels per layer.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to quantify the impact of the non-uniform flow generated by the upstream stator on the generation and convection of the tip leakage flow (TLF) structures in the passages of the rotor blades in a low-speed axial fan.

Design/methodology/approach

A full three dimensional (3D)-viscous unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-stokes (RANS) (URANS) simulation of the flow within a periodic domain of the axial stage has been performed at three different flow rate coefficients (φ = 0.38, 0.32, 0.27) using ReNormalization Group k-ε turbulence modelling. A typical tip clearance of 2.3 per cent of the blade span has been modelled on a reduced domain comprising a three-vaned stator and a two-bladed rotor with circumferential periodicity. A non-conformal grid with hybrid meshing, locally refined O-meshes on both blades and vanes walls with (100 × 25 × 80) elements, a 15-node meshed tip gap and circumferential interfaces for sliding mesh computations were also implemented. The unsteady motion of the rotor has been covered with 60 time steps per blade event. The simulations were validated with experimental measurements of the static pressure in the shroud of the blade tip region.

Findings

It has been observed that both TLF and intensities of the tip leakage vortex (TLV) are significantly influenced by upstream stator wakes, especially at nominal and partial load conditions. In particular, the leakage flow, which represents 12.4 per cent and 11.3 per cent of the working flow rate, respectively, has shown a clear periodic fluctuation clocked with the vane passing period in the relative domain. The periodic fluctuation of the TLF is in the range of 2.8-3.4 per cent of the mean value. In addition, the trajectory of the tip vortex is also notably perturbed, with root-mean squared fluctuations reaching up to 18 per cent and 6 per cent in the regions of maximum interaction at 50 per cent and 25 per cent of the blade chord for nominal and partial load conditions, respectively. On the contrary, the massive flow separation observed in the tip region of the blades for near-stall conditions prevents the formation of TLV structures and neglects any further interaction with the upstream vanes.

Research limitations/implications

Despite the increasing use of large eddy simulation modelling in turbomachinery environments, which requires extremely high computational costs, URANS modelling is still revealed as a useful technique to describe highly complex viscous mechanisms in 3D swirl flows, such as unsteady tip flow structures, with reasonable accuracy.

Originality/value

The paper presents a validated numerical model that simulates the unsteady response of the TLF to upstream perturbations in an axial fan stage. It also provides levels of instabilities in the TLV derived from the deterministic non-uniformities associated to the vane wakes.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper deals with research activities to develop optimization workflows implying computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling. The purpose of this paper is to present an industrial and fully-automated optimal design tool, able to handle objectives, constraints, multi-parameters and multi-points optimization on a given CATIA CAD. The work is realized on Rapid And CostEffective Rotorcraft compound rotorcraft in the framework of the Fast RotorCraft Innovative Aircraft Demonstrator Platform (IADP) within the Clean Sky 2 programme.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed solution relies on an automated CAD-CFD workflow called through the optimization process based on surrogate-based optimization (SBO) techniques. The SBO workflow has been specifically developed.

Findings

The methodology is validated on a simple configuration (bended pipe with two parameters). Then, the process is applied on a full compound rotorcraft to minimize the flow distortion at the engine entry. The design of the experiment and the optimization loop act on seven design parameters of the air inlet and for each individual the evaluation is performed on two operation points, namely, cruise flight and hover case. Finally, the best design is analyzed and aerodynamic performances are compared with the initial design.

Originality/value

The adding value of the developed process is to deal with geometric integration conflicts addressed through a specific CAD module and the implementation of a penalty function method to manage the unsuccessful evaluation of any individual.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to focus on the development of a high-order discontinuous Galerkin method for the solution of unsteady, incompressible, multiphase flows with level set interface formulation.

Design/methodology/approach

Nodal discontinuous Galerkin discretization is used for incompressible Navier–Stokes, level set advection and reinitialization equations on adaptive unstructured elements. Implicit systems arising from the semi-explicit time discretization of the flow equations are solved with a p-multigrid preconditioned conjugate gradient method, which minimizes the memory requirements and increases overall run-time performance. Computations are localized mostly near the interface location to reduce computational cost without sacrificing the accuracy.

Findings

The proposed method allows to capture interface topology accurately in simulating wide range of flow regimes with high density/viscosity ratios and offers good mass conservation even in relatively coarse grids, while keeping the simplicity of the level set interface modeling. Efficiency, local high-order accuracy and mass conservation of the method are confirmed through distinct numerical test cases of sloshing, dam break and Rayleigh–Taylor instability.

Originality/value

A fully discontinuous Galerkin, high-order, adaptive method on unstructured grids is introduced where flow and interface equations are solved in discontinuous space.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is the development of a CFD methodology based on LES computations to analyze the rotor–stator interaction in an axial fan stage.

Design/methodology/approach

A wall-modeled large eddy simulation (WMLES) has been performed for a spanwise 3D extrusion of the central section of the fan stage. Computations were performed for three different operating conditions, from nominal (Q_N) to off-design (85 per cent Q_N and 70 per cent Q_N) working points. Circumferential periodic conditions were introduced to reduce the extent of the computational domain. The post-processing procedure enabled the segregation of unsteady deterministic features and turbulent scales. The simulations were experimentally validated using wake profiles and turbulent scales obtained from hot-wire measurements.

Findings

The transport of rotor wakes and both wake–vane and wake–wake interactions in the stator flow field have been analyzed. The description of flow separation, particularly at off-design conditions, is fully benefited from the LES performance. Rotor wakes impinging on the stator vanes generate a coherent large-scale vortex shedding at reduced frequencies. Large pressure fluctuations in the stagnation region on the leading edge of the vanes have been found.

Research limitations/implications

LES simulations have shown to be appropriate for the assessment of the design of an axial fan, especially for specific operating conditions for which a URANS model presents a lower performance for turbulence description.

Originality/value

This paper describes the development of an LES-based simulation to understand the flow mechanisms related to the rotor–stator interaction in axial fan stages.

Purpose

Growing application of micro aerial vehicle (MAV) sets in demand for accurate computations of low Reynolds number flows past their wings. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of unsteady freestream velocity or wind gust on a harmonically plunging symmetric NACA0012 airfoil at Re = 1,000. The influence of unsteady parameters, such as reduced frequency of plunging motion (0.25 < k < 1.5), non-dimensional plunging amplitude (ho = 0.2) and non-dimensional amplitude of wind gust (0.1 = λ = 0.4) has been studied.

Design/methodology/approach

Computations have been carried out using commercial software ANSYS Fluent 16.0. To incorporate the plunging motion, the entire reference frame is oscillating, and thereby, a source term is added in the Navier–Stokes equation.

Findings

The results have been presented in the form of streamlines, vorticity contours, lift and drag signals and their spectra. It is observed that the ratio of plunging frequency to gust frequency (f/fg) has strong influence on periodic characteristics of unsteady wake. It has also been observed that for a fixed plunging amplitude, an increase in value of k results into a change from positive drag to thrust.

Practical implications

The research has implications in the development of MAV.

Originality/value

This study is intended to get a better understanding of unsteady parameters associated with gusty flow in flapping wing applications and possible ways to alleviate its adverse effect on it.

Purpose

The paper aims to illustrate a numerical technique to calculate fields and inductances of rotating electrical machines.

Design/methodology/approach

The technique is based on an integral formulation of the nonlinear magnetostatic model in terms of the unknown magnetization. The solution is obtained by means of a Picard-Banach iteration whose convergence can be theoretically proved.

Findings

The proposed method has been used to build a model of a large turbine generator. In particular, the influence of end effects on flux linkages has been computed. It has been demonstrated that the 2D solution underestimates the flux linkages as well as the no load voltage of 2 per cent, while the leakage fluxes are computed by the 2D solution with errors as high as 20 per cent.

Originality/value

The method is advantageous in comparison to standard methods.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to utilize purpose advanced fluid‐structure interaction, non‐linear dynamics, finite‐element analyses in order to investigate various phenomena and processes accompanying blast wave generation, propagation and interaction and to assess the blast‐wave‐mitigation potential of a piston‐cylinder assembly placed in front of the target structure.

Design/methodology/approach

The employed computational methods and tools are verified and validated by first demonstrating that they can quite accurately reproduce analytical solutions for a couple of well‐defined blast wave propagation and interaction problems.

Findings

The methods/tools are used to investigate the piston‐cylinder blast‐mitigation concept and the results obtained clearly reveal that significant blast‐mitigation effects can be achieved through the use of this concept. Furthermore, the results showed that the extent of the blast‐mitigation effect is a sensitive function of the piston‐cylinder geometrical parameters. Specifically, the mass of the piston and the length of the cylinder are found to be the dominant factors controlling the extent of the blast‐wave‐mitigation.

Originality/value

The work demonstrates that, when assessing the blast‐wave‐mitigation potential of the piston‐cylinder concept, it is critical that loading experienced by the piston be defined by explicitly modeling (fluid/structure) interactions between the blast wave(s) and the piston.
