Abstract

Purpose

Synthetic aperture radar exploits the receiving signals in the antenna for detecting the moving targets and estimates the motion parameters of the moving objects. The limitation of the existing methods is regarding the poor power density such that those received signals are essentially to be transformed to the background ratio. To overcome this issue, fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) is employed in the moving target detection (MTD) process. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed MTD method uses the fuzzy decisive approach for detecting the moving target in the search space. The received signal and the FrFT of the received signal are subjected to the calculation of correlation using the ambiguity function. Based on the correlation, the location of the target is identified in the search space and is fed to the fuzzy decisive module, which detects the target location using the fuzzy linguistic rules.

Findings

The simulation is performed, and the analysis is carried out based on the metrics, like detection time, missed target rate, and MSE. From the analysis, it can be shown that the proposed Fuzzy-based MTD process detected the object in 5.0237 secs with a minimum missed target rate of 0.1210 and MSE of 23377.48.

Originality/value

The proposed Fuzzy-MTD is the application of the fuzzy rules for locating the moving target in search space based on the peak energy of the original received signal and FrFT of the original received signal.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel curvilinear path estimation model employing multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) for mid vehicle collision avoidance. The two-phase path estimation scheme initially uses the offset (position) value of the front and the mid (host) vehicle to build the crisp model. The resulting crisp model is MARS regressed to deliver a closely aligned actual model in the second phase. This arrangement significantly narrows the gap between the estimated and the true path analyzed using the mean square error (MSE) for different offsets on Next Generation Simulation Interstate 80 (NGSIM I-80) data set. The presented model also covers parallel parking by encompassing the reverse motion of the host vehicle in the path estimation, thereby, making it amicable for real-road scenarios.

Design/methodology/approach

Abstract

Purpose

As more and more robots are used in industry, it is necessary for robots to interact with high dynamic environments. For this reason, the purpose of this research is to form an excellent force controller by considering the transient contact force response, overshoot and steady-state force-tracking accuracy.

Design/methodology/approach

Combining the active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) and the adaptive fuzzy PD controller, an enhanced admittance force-tracking controller framework and a well-designed control scheme are proposed. Tracking differentiator balances the contradiction between inertia and jump control signal of the control object. Kalman filter and extended state observer are introduced to obtain purer feedback force signal and uncertainty compensation. Adaptive fuzzy PD controller is introduced to account for transient and steady state performance of the system.

Findings

The proposed controller has achieved successful results through simulation and actual test of 6-axis robot with minimum error.

Practical implications

The controller is simple and practical in real industrial scenarios, where force control by robots is required.

Originality/value

In this research, a new practical force control algorithm is proposed to guarantee the performance of the force controller for robots interacting with high dynamic environments.

Abstract

Purpose

Fueled by the rapid growth of internet, steganography has emerged as one of the promising techniques in the communication system to obscure the data. Steganography is defined as the process of concealing the data or message within media files without affecting the perception of the image. Media files, like audio, video, image, etc., are utilized to embed the message. Nowadays, steganography is also used to transmit the medical information or diagnostic reports. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the novel wavelet transform-based steganographic method is proposed for secure data communication using OFDM system. The embedding and extraction process in the proposed steganography method exploits the wavelet transform. Initially, the cost matrix is estimated by the following three aspects: pixel intensity, edge transformation and wavelet transform. The cost estimation matrix provides the location of the cover image where the message is to be entrenched. Then, the wavelet transform is utilized to embed the message into the cover image according to the cost value. Subsequently, in the extraction process, the wavelet transform is applied to the embedded image to retrieve the message efficiently. Finally, in order to transfer the secret information over the channel, the newly developed wavelet-based steganographic method is employed for the OFDM system.

Findings

The experimental results are evaluated and performance is analyzed using PSNR and MSE parameters and then compared with existing systems. Thus, the outcome of our wavelet transform steganographic method achieves the PSNR of 71.5 dB which ensures the high imperceptibility of the image. Then, the outcome of the OFDM-based proposed steganographic method attains the higher PSNR of 71.07 dB that proves the confidentiality of the message.

Originality/value

In the authors’ previous work, the embedding and extraction process was done based on the cost estimation matrix. To enhance the security throughout the communication system, the novel wavelet-based embedding and extraction process is applied to the OFDM system in this paper. The idea behind this method is to attain a higher imperceptibility and robustness of the image.

Abstract

Purpose

Flying‐capacitor multilevel converters (FCC) need a passive or active regulation of the capacitor voltages. Recently the trend is towards active control, often implemented separately from the current control. The advantages of a true multi‐variable control sparked the interest to apply Model Based Predictive Control (MBPC) for FCC. In this paper an objective analysis method to evaluate the effects of several design choices is presented. The effects of the weight factor selection, model simplification, and prediction horizon expansion for MBPC of a 3‐level FCC are analyzed in a systematical way.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis is mainly based on the mean square error (MSE) of current and capacitor voltage. The results are analysed for different lengths of the prediction horizon and for a wide range of weight factor values. Similarly the effect of a model simplification, neglecting the neutral point voltage, is studied when implementing MBPC for FCCs while considering the computational aspects. Validation of the simulation results is done by experiments on an FPGA‐based setup.

Findings

Including the effect of the neutral point voltage considerably increases the current control quality and a much wider range of good values for the weight factor exists. As this good range is not critically dependent on the current amplitude it is possible to select one weight factor value for all operating points. Furthermore, it is concluded that increasing the prediction horizon increases the computational load without improving the control quality.

Research limitations/implications

The effects of increasing the prediction horizon when including other controlled variables is to be investigated, as well as the robustness to modeling errors. The MSE analysis methodology is very suitable for this further research.

Practical implications

For practitioners of MBPC in power electronics the paper proves that by means of simulations and the MSE one value for weight factor can be chosen for all operating points. The paper clearly shows that a practical implementation is feasible and demonstrates that neglecting the neutral point voltage is not good practice.

Originality/value

The MSE‐based analysis is shown to be a systematical and unbiased methodology to evaluate the effects of design choices. The results from this analysis can be directly applied in practical setups.

Abstract

Purpose

The technique for hiding confidential data in specific digital media by enhancing the graphical contents is known as watermarking. The dissemination of information over a secure channel is essential for multimedia applications. The purpose of this study is to develop a secure communication approach for OFDM system.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper exploits a secure communication in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system using wavelet-based video watermarking technique. In this work, the Chronological-MS algorithm is used for securing the data communication in the OFDM system. Here, the secret message is embedded in video frames using wavelet transform for hiding sensitive information and the hidden information is transmitted over the OFDM system. The Chronological-MS algorithm is used for selecting the optimal regions in the video for embedding secret message. In embedding phase, wavelet coefficients are obtained by applying wavelet transform on the frame for embedding the secret message. Meanwhile, in extraction phase, the inverse wavelet transform is applied to extract the secret message.

Findings

Considering number of frames, the maximum Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) value is attained by proposed Wavelet + Chronological MS method for Video 2 with value 73.643 dB, respectively. Meanwhile, the minimum mean squared error (MSE) attained by the proposed Wavelet + Chronological MS method is when considering number of frames with MSE values as 0.001 for both Videos 1 and 2. The minimum bit error rate (BER) value is attained by the proposed method with value 0.00009 considering random noise with Video 1. Thus, the proposed Wavelet + Chronological MS have shown better results than the existing techniques.

Originality/value

This work proposes a wavelet-based watermarking method using Chronological-MS, for initiating secured communication over an OFDM. One of the main advantages of wavelets is that they offer a simultaneous localization in time and frequency domain. Hence, the proposed method offers the highly secured data transmission over the OFDM.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a proficiency for accomplishing optimal CFO and keep down the error among the received and transmitted signal. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is considered as an attractive modulation scheme that could be adopted in wireless communication systems owing to its reliability in opposition to multipath interruptions under different subchannels. Carrier frequency offset (CFO) establishes inter-carrier interference that devastates the orthogonality between the subcarriers and fluctuates the preferred signal and minimizes the effectual signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This results in corrupted system performance. For sustaining the subcarriers’ orthogonality, timing errors and CFOs have to be approximated and sufficiently compensated for. Single carrier modulation (SCM) is a major feature for efficient OFDM system.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper introduces a novel superposition coded modulation-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (SCM-OFDM) system with optimal CFO estimation using advanced optimization algorithm. The effectiveness of SCM-OFDM is validated by correlating the transmitted and received signal. Hence, the primary objective of the current research work is to reduce the error among the transmitted and received signal. The received signal involves CFO, which has to be tuned properly to get the signal as closest as possible with transmitted signal. The optimization or tuning of CFO is done by improved grey wolf optimization (GWO) called GWO with self-adaptiveness (GWO-SA). Further, it carries the performance comparison of proposed model with state-of-the-art models with the analysis on bit error rate (BER) and mean square error (MSE), thus validating the system’s performance.

Findings

From the analysis, BER of the proposed and conventional schemes for CFO at 0.25 was determined, where the adopted scheme at 10th SNR was 99.6 per cent better than maximum likelihood, 99.6 per cent better than least mean square (LMS), 99.3 per cent better than particle swarm optimization (PSO), 75 per cent better than genetic algorithm (GA) and 25 per cent better than GWO algorithms. Moreover, MSE at 1st SNR, the proposed GWO-SA scheme, is 4.62 per cent better than LMS, 60.1 per cent better than PSO, 37.82 better than GA and 67.85 per cent better than GWO algorithms. Hence, it is confirmed that the performance of SCM-OFDM system with GWO-SA-based CFO estimation outperformed the state-of-the-art techniques.

Originality/value

This paper presents a technique for attaining optimal CFO and to minimize the error among the received and transmitted signal. This is the first work that uses GWO-SA for attaining optimal CFO.

Abstract

Purpose

With the objective of trying to understand and assess the status of delivering business development services (BDS) and identifying the constraints, the Ethiopian Development Research Institute conducted a survey of randomly selected 974 MSEs (551 micro and 423 small enterprise operators) in 2003.

Design/methodology/approach

Random, anonymous survey of MSE operators in BDS in Ethiopia.

Findings

The results of the survey indicated that there were very limited BDS providers in the sector, which delivered limited services to few MSE operators (very low outreach). MSE operators had very limited vocational and technical training (before starting business), received few short‐term training, extension and counselling, and marketing services. The most important constraints were mainly related to access to markets and finance. Networks or associations in the MSE sector were not used as useful instruments to promote joint marketing. The results of the survey reveal that there is not significant difference based on size (micro and small) and gender in accessing BDS in the MSE sector. Addressing the constraints of delivering BDS requires clarity regarding the roles of facilitator and providers and the use of subsidies during the transition phase. The interventions should focus on delivering BDS on sustainable basis by responding to the needs in the market and providing incentives to the BDS providers, particularly the private sector.

Originality/value

Very few systematic studies of this nature have been carried out in developing countries. The paper offers clear implications for policymakers involved in economic development and poverty reduction.

Abstract

Purpose

From an institutional theory perspective, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the combined impact of financial capital (microcredit) and human capital development (entrepreneurship training) delivered by financial non-governmental organisations (FNGOs) on the performance of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in Ghana.

Design/methodology/approach

Adopting a multiple linear regression analysis, the study used primary data collected from 506 Ghanaian MSEs. Microcredit was measured using four main constructs, namely, loan cost, loan amount, the flexibility of loan repayment and loan accessibility. Entrepreneurship training was measured using four main constructs, namely, training content, training efficiency, training frequency and training accessibility. MSE performance was also measured using three main indicators, namely, sales, employment and profitability growth. The study controlled for business age, industry category, manager’s educational level and gender.

Findings

The results of this study show that the combined delivery of financial and human capital development by FNGOs has a significant impact on MSE performance. The social welfare logic adopted by FNGOs seems to be legitimate to the needs and growth of MSEs in Ghana. However, the cost of microcredit remains a drawback, constraining the performance of MSEs in Ghana.

Research limitations/implications

This study was carried out in the Volta Region, which is one of the ten regions of Ghana. Even though the sample size suffices, the findings from this study could not be generalised to the whole of Ghana. Also, this study is a quantitative study and could benefit from a triangulated method where the qualitative inputs could offer insights into the findings in this study.

Originality/value

Theoretically, this study contributes to the understanding of institutions and the type of impact they have on the growth of MSEs. Practically, the provision of a conducive environment and access to financial capital is crucial to the growth of MSEs. Also, the adoption of the social welfare logic in microfinance delivery could be one of the major steps in promoting the performance of MSEs in Ghana.
