Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the tracking performance of the carrier phase lock loop (PLL) in the strapdown inertial navigation system/global positioning system (SINS/GPS) integrated system with an innovative scheme of ultra‐tight integration.

Design/methodology/approach

First, providing the Doppler frequency for PLL using SINS velocity could enlarge the loop equivalent bandwidth and reduce the dynamic effect on the carrier loop. Meanwhile, lowering the filter bandwidth could increase the immunity to noise. Second, the relationships between the PLL and SINS errors have been analyzed, and then the PLL error model is established to eliminate the correlation between the pseudo‐range‐rate error and SINS velocity error. Third, the carrier frequency is regulated to improve the tracking accuracy, according to the error estimations of Kalman filter.

Findings

The innovative ultra‐tightly integrated system could not only enhance the anti‐jamming capability and the dynamic tracking performance of the tracking loops, but also improve the pseudo‐range‐rate measurements accuracy for the integrated filter.

Originality/value

This paper provides further study on the method of enhancing the carrier‐tracking performance and improving the integration mode in the ultra‐tightly integrated system based on the software‐defined GPS receiver.

Abstract

Purpose

These implementations not only generate excessive voltage levels to enhance the quality of power but also include a detailed investigating of the various modulation methods and control schemes for multilevel inverter (MLI) topologies. Reduced harmonic modulation technology is used to produce 11-level output voltage with the production of renewable energy applications. The simulation is done in the MATLAB/Simulink for 11-level symmetric MLI and is correlated with the conventional inverter design.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is focused on investigating the different types of asymmetric, symmetric and hybrid topologies and control methods used for the modular multilevel inverter (MMI) operation. Classical MLI configurations are affected by performance issues such as poor power quality, uneconomic structure and low efficiency.

Findings

The variations in both carrier and reference signals and their performance are analyzed for the proposed inverter topologies. The simulation result compares unipolar and bipolar pulse-width modulation (PWM) techniques with total harmonic distortion (THD) results. The solar-fed 11-level MMI is controlled using various modulation strategies, which are connected to marine emergency lighting loads. Various modulation techniques are used to control the solar-fed 11-level MMI, which is connected to marine emergency lighting loads. The entire hardware system is controlled by using SPARTAN 3A field programmable gate array (FPGA) board and the least harmonics are obtained by improving the power quality.

Originality/value

The simulation result compares unipolar and bipolar PWM techniques with THD results. Various modulation techniques are used to control the solar-fed 11-level MMI, which is connected to marine emergency lighting loads. The entire hardware system is controlled by a SPARTAN 3A field programmable gate array (FPGA) board, and the power quality is improved to achieve the lowest harmonics possible.

Abstract

In this paper, two transform methods, the Fourier transform (FT) and the wavelet transform (WT) methods, are utilized to process moiré fringes for the strain analysis of electronic packaging. With the introduction of fringe carriers, those transform techniques need only one fringe pattern for each deformation state. The strain modulation to the carrier frequency can be subtracted by filtering as the pattern is transformed into spectrum domain by the fast‐FT processing, and the deformation field can thus be restored by the inverse FT transform after spectral shifting. The WT method expands the pattern information involved in the fringe carrier in both spatial domain and spectral domain to analyze the deformation distribution in this combined space. By changing the transform scales in the processing, the wavelet transform offers multi‐resolution analysis for the deformation field with high gradients.

Abstract

Purpose

Four‐quadrant AC‐DC converters are one kind of the most common and popular AC‐DC converters, which are serious EMI sources. The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel control for four‐quadrant AC‐DC converters to suppress the generated electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Design/methodology/approach

A chaotic carrier plays an important role to implement the chaotic PWM control. The relationship between the EMI distribution and carrier frequency is given by deducing and analyzing the harmonic components of the AC‐DC converter. The comparison of chaotic PWM control and random PWM control in suppressing EMI are provided.

Findings

The simulation results prove the effectiveness of the proposed chaotic PWM control on EMI reduction.

Research limitations/implications

The effects of EMI suppression under different chaotic carriers will be theoretically analyzed in the future work.

Practical implications

The proposed chaotic PWM control can suppress EMI for converters without adding additional devices or components, therefore, without increasing the volume, weight and cost of converters.

Originality/value

In this paper, a novel chaotic pulse width modulation (PWM) control is proposed and implemented into a four‐quadrant AC‐DC converter for electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression, moreover, the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the input AC current is also improved under chaotic PWM control.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the tracking performance of the tracking loops under high dynamic and severe jamming conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

First, as the two dominant measurement error sources of the tracking loops, the thermal noise jitter and the dynamic stress error are thoroughly analyzed. Second, a scheme of adaptive tracking loops, which could adaptively adjust the order and the bandwidth of tracking loops, is proposed. Third, real-time detections of the vehicle dynamics and the carrier-to-noise density ratio, and the adaptive bandwidth of the carrier loop are presented, respectively. Finally, simulations are operated to validate the excellent tracking performance of the adaptive tracking loops.

Findings

Based on the principle of minimizing the measurement errors, the loop order and bandwidth are adaptively adjusted in the proposed scheme. Thus, the anti-jamming capability and dynamic tracking performance of the tracking loops could be effectively enhanced.

Practical implications

This paper provides further study on the method of improving the tracking capability under complexly applied conditions of high dynamics and severe jamming.

Originality/value

The detections of carrier-to-noise density ratio and vehicle dynamics are used to adaptively adjusting the loop order and bandwidth, which could not only improve the measurement accuracy but also ensure the stable operation of tracking loops.

MANY problems associated with aircraft investigations involve the accurate measurement of fluctuating fluid pressures. Various types of pickup exist from which choice may be made for this purpose. The suitability of a particular type for a specific application depends on the characteristics of the type and its associated electronic recorder. The fundamental requirements of fluctuating pressure pickups are discussed, and various types are described and typical examples of their application are given. Design data are derived based on experiments conducted on condenser type pickups, from which it is possible to design single diaphragm types for particular frequency and sensitivity requirements.

Abstract

Purpose

Multilevel inverters play a major role in the development of high-power industrial applications. In traditional low-level inverters (e.g. 2-level), the switching frequency is restricted and the harmonic spectrum of the system is hard to meet power requirements. Similarly, high-level inverters consist of a large number of switches, complex modulation techniques and complex hardware architecture, which results in high power loss and a significant amount of harmonic distortion. Furthermore, it is a must to ensure that every switch experiences the same stress of voltage and current. The purpose of this paper is to present an inverter topology with lower conduction and switching losses via reduced number of switches and equal voltage source-sharing technique.

Design/methodology/approach

Herein, the authors present a cascaded multilevel inverter having less power switches, a simple modulation technique and an equal voltage source-sharing phenomenon implementation.

Findings

The modulation technique becomes more complex when equal voltage source-sharing is to be implemented. In this study, a novel topology for the multilevel inverter with fewer switches, novel modulation technique, equal voltage source-sharing and Inductor-Capacitor-Inductor filter implementation is demonstrated to the reduce harmonic spectrum and power losses of the proposed system.

Originality/value

The nine-level inverter design is validated using software simulations and hardware prototype testing; the power losses of the proposed inverter design are elaborated and compared with the traditional approach.
