Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents an overview of embedded finance. It identifies the applications, use case examples, benefits and challenges of embedded finance. The paper also analyzes global interest in embedded finance and compares it with interest in related finance concepts such as open finance, open banking, decentralized finance, financial innovation, Fintech and digital finance.

Design/methodology/approach

Granger causality test and two-stage least square regression were used to assess interest over time in embedded finance.

Findings

The empirical result show that interest in embedded finance increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The United States, the United Kingdom and India witnessed the highest interest in embedded finance compared to other countries. There is bi-directional Granger causality between interest in information about embedded finance and interest in information about financial innovation. There is uni-directional Granger causality between interest in information about embedded finance and interest in information about digital finance and open finance. The findings also reveal that interest in decentralized finance and open finance are significant determinants of interest in embedded finance. On the other hand, interest in embedded finance is a significant determinant of interest in digital finance, decentralized finance, Fintech and open banking. Also, interest in embedded finance is significantly correlated with interest in digital finance, decentralized finance, open banking and Fintech.

Originality/value

Presently, there is little academic interest in embedded finance despite the fact that embedded finance is part of the on-going digital finance revolution. This paper fills this gap in the literature by assessing the benefits, use case, challenges of embedded finance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to provide a detailed overview of the role and participation of embedded librarians in the academic e-classroom. More specifically, this paper reflects the perceptions of Greek academic librarians regarding the use of learning management systems (LMSs). Furthermore, it seeks to highlight the most popular software, to list the services provided through LMSs and to determine the level of librarians’ engagement with LMSs. Finally, it investigates the challenges and benefits of their use.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey research was used as the methodological design. An adequate questionnaire was created for the collection of quantitative data to study the activities and experiences of academic embedded librarians.

Findings

According to the study findings, a considerable percentage of academic librarians use the potential of LMSs, indicating that embedded librarianship is the future for Greek academic libraries. However, it seems that LMSs are not fully exploited even during the pandemic when the libraries remained closed.

Research limitations/implications

This study was exploratory in nature and thus its scope was limited. It was limited to embedded librarianship in academic libraries.

Practical implications

Embedded librarianship comes with many challenges for its practitioners; yet, it also has the potential to connect libraries and librarians directly to the overall institutional aims and enhance their positions in the academy.

Originality/value

The role and participation of embedded librarians in Greek academic institutions is a research area that has not been fully investigated. Therefore, this paper can give insights into this critical issue, especially during a pandemic.

Abstract

Embedded passives technologies can provide benefits of size, performance, cost, and reliability to high density, high‐speed designs. A number of embedded passive technology solutions are available to the designer. Based on our experience with Rohm and Haas's thin‐film, high‐ohmic, InSiteTM embedded resistor materials (500 and 1000 Ω/sq), this paper provides some guidelines for selecting the appropriate embedded resistor technology and implementing it at a board fabricator. The design of embedded resistors, and the trade‐offs between resistor size, tolerance, and capability of board fabrication processes, are analyzed in detail. This paper also discusses selection of the appropriate embedded capacitor technology and introduces some initial results on Rohm and Haas's thin‐film, high‐Dk, InSite embedded capacitor material (200 nF/cm2).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to form fabrication and electrical characteristics of passive device embedded substrate that is embedded chip bead inductor and chip capacitor inside substrate for the application of radio frequency (RF) modules.

Design/methodology/approach

Passive device embedded substrate was fabricated using embedding process that consists of lamination process, laser drilling at the electrode Cu pads of passive components, electro-less Cu plating formation process such as photolithography, electrolytic Cu plating and etching. Impedance and capacitance characteristics of the fabricated passive device embedded substrate were evaluated.

Findings

By checking what embedded components are placed in the appropriate place using failure analysis via connection performance between copper plane and embedded components was verified. For measuring electrical characteristics of the fabricated passive device embedded substrate, the evaluation was done using test methods like continuity test for checking interconnections which are not connected to any embedded components and in-circuit test for checking interconnections which are connected to any embedded component. From in-circuit testing for embedding passive components with series and parallel circuits, the authors verified how to test passive device embedded substrate by using capacitance and impedance measurement with the comparison of measured results between good samples and bad samples.

Originality/value

Ultra miniaturized and low-profile mobile products are driving the need for embedded passive component integration technologies using a novel manufacturing-compatible organic substrate and interconnect technologies. Fabrication and test methods for passive device embedded substrate described in this paper are expected to lead to be developed to make quality measurable for the application of RF modules.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to share the current state of embedded librarianship in learning management systems as reported by academic librarians. The paper highlights the best practices, as well as continuing questions, in the field of embedded librarianship.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected participant feedback in two active, participatory panel discussions at national conferences. The open forums were centered on three guiding themes of embedded librarianship: building connections with faculty and students; utilizing technology tools; and providing information literacy and assessment. Participants answered directed questions, and their responses were recorded and analyzed for this paper.

Findings

Librarians report an increasing demand for library services in learning management systems. Collaboration and partnerships across campus are required for successful embedded librarian projects. Technology tools continue to evolve and change, and most librarians can anticipate using multiple learning management systems over time. There is an ongoing need for professional development in online library instruction and assessment.

Originality/value

This paper provides a snapshot of the current state of embedded librarianship in learning management systems. It offers insights about what academic librarians value, what they have learned and what concerns they still have about library instruction in online environments.

Abstract

With the advent of new materials and technologies that enable passive components to be embedded within electronic substrates, one key question that arises is: under what circumstances (and for what type of applications) is it economically viable to consider using embedded passives? The economic issues that must be considered consist of a combination of manufacturing costs and throughputs, and non‐manufacturing life cycle costs. This paper discusses the assessment of manufacturing costs associated with embedding resistors and capacitors in printed circuit boards and provides cost modeling results for an avionics board. The discussion is extended to include optimizing the specific embedded passive content in a board and design for production modeling when embedded passives are present. Life cycle cost issues are also qualitatively discussed.

Abstract

The chapter pays specific attention to the organizing and reorganizing process of the embedding of new technology. The aim is to increase the understanding of how a focal technology is incrementally aligned into a customer’s different business settings. Embedding becomes subject to intense organizing efforts. It becomes a struggle with activating different features of the focal technology by forging and modifying the resource interfaces between the focal technology and customer resources.

The organizing efforts are about seeking, in an explorative mood, for resource interfaces between the focal technology and the customer resources. This organizing process enables the identification of new adaptation opportunities for technology embedding processes, whereby the focal technology obtains certain feature and values.

A systematically developed knowledge of resource interfaces is a key for activating different features of the focal technology and thereby facilitating its embedding into the customer’s various business settings. This is described in a single case study in the chapter. This case and the analysis show how a supplier and a customer struggle with developing resource interface knowledge to activate the different features of the focal technology, thereby facilitating its embedding process. The first part of the chapter establishes a theoretical framework, followed in the second part by the case study and analysis. The concluding discussion emphasizes the importance of understanding and managing various interfaces as part of the organizing processes.

Abstract

Purpose

The authors assess the informativeness for stock markets of proven reserves of oil and gas, and embedded CO2 in those reserves.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a two-step regression approach, the authors attempt to test the relationship between proven reserves, CO2 embedded in those reserves and the stock market value controlling for the selection bias (i.e. the decision of managers to disclose environmental information about embedded CO2).

Findings

Results, based on a sample of the US and Canadian firms are the following. Proven reserves increase the firm’s value, while embedded CO2 reduces the stock market value substantially. Furthermore, the decision of managers to disclose information about embedded CO2 is positively related to analyst following, share price volatility, firm size, and institutional ownership.

Originality/value

The current study assesses the long-term incidence of embedded CO2 (in oil and gas proven reserves) on firms’ stock market value, while most studies are focusing on yearly CO2 emissions.

Abstract

Purpose

A smart city is a potential solution to the problems caused by the unprecedented speed of urbanization. However, the increasing availability of big data is a challenge for transforming a city into a smart one. Conventional statistics and econometric methods may not work well with big data. One promising direction is to leverage advanced machine learning tools in analyzing big data about cities. In this paper, the authors propose a model to learn region embedding. The learned embedding can be used for more accurate prediction by representing discrete variables as continuous vectors that encode the meaning of a region.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use the random walk and skip-gram methods to learn embedding and update the preliminary embedding generated by graph convolutional network (GCN). The authors apply this model to a real-world dataset from Manhattan, New York, and use the learned embedding for crime event prediction.

Findings

This study’s results show that the proposed model can learn multi-dimensional city data more accurately. Thus, it facilitates cities to transform themselves into smarter ones that are more sustainable and efficient.

Originality/value

The authors propose an embedding model that can learn multi-dimensional city data for improving predictive analytics and urban operations. This model can learn more dimensions of city data, reduce the amount of computation and leverage distributed computing for smart city development and transformation.

Extended research efforts have been dedicated to understanding how different aspects of online surveys impact the response rate and quality of collected data. With the hope to yield higher response rates, leading survey software solutions (e.g., SurveyMonkey, Qualtrics, QuestionPro) introduced a new technique of embedding a question from an online survey into invitation emails sent to the respondents. The purpose of this chapter is to examine the impact of embedded questions on survey response rate and quality. The results of two experimental studies show that respondents are more likely to respond to a survey with an embedded question compared to an email without one. No statistically significant differences were discovered regarding data quality that was assessed via survey completion rate, respondent bias, and attention check questions. The chapter provides suggestions and guidelines for increasing online surveys' response rate and quality.
