Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide a tutorial and survey on recent advances in multimedia networking from an integrated perspective of both video networking and building digital video libraries. The nature of video networking, coupled with various recent developments in standards, proposals and applications, poses great challenges to the research and industrial communities working in this area.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper presents an insightful analysis for recent and emerging multimedia applications in digital video libraries and on video coding standards and their applications in digital libraries. Emphasis is given on those standards and mechanisms that enable multimedia content adaptation fully interoperable according to the vision of Universal Multimedia Access vision.
Findings
The tutorial helps elucidate the similarities and differences among the considered standards and networking applications. A number of research trends and challenges are identified, and selected promising solutions are discussed. This practice would needle further thoughts on the development of this area and open-up more research and application opportunities.
Research limitations/implications
The paper does not provide methodical studies of networking application scenarios for all the discussed video coding standards and Quality of Service (QoS) management mechanisms.
Practical implications
The paper provides an overview of which technologies/mechanisms are being used broadly in networking scenarios of digital video libraries. The discussed networking scenarios bring together video coding standards and various emerging wireless networking paradigms toward innovative application scenarios.
Originality/value
QoS mechanisms and video coding standards that support multimedia applications for digital video libraries need to become well-known by library managers and professional associations in the fields of libraries and archives. The comprehensive overview and critiques on existing standards and application approaches offer a valuable reference for researchers and system developers in related research and industrial communities.

Abstract
Web services refer to a specific set of technologies used to implement a Service Oriented Architecture. Thanks to maturing Web‐services standards, and to new mobile devices and application solutions, progress is being made in presenting similar Web‐services offerings in both mobile and fixed networks. To bring that architecture and the solutions it will support to the world of mobility is indeed a significant issue in m‐business applications, because mobile Web services present various advantages: Reduction of the overall cost of development (by reusing existing system components), faster time to market introduction of products (provided by applications’ rapid development and deployment) and remarkable possibilities to emerge new applications with increased functionalities. In addition, the new and forthcoming mobile networks, with native IP connection and high speed transmission capability, allow the development of a variety of modern multimedia services. Multimedia Messaging Services (capable to mix the media types in order to enable more intuitive messaging operation), and Instant Messaging and Presence Services (dedicated for presence, instant messaging, and distribution and sharing of multimedia content in groups of users), provide suitable underlying capabilities to support location‐based and context‐sensitive multimedia services. In this paper we will present the current approaches regarding architectural, functional and security features that allow enterprises to enjoy the benefits of traditional Web services in the mobile multimedia domain.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to provide an overview of representative multimedia applications in the cultural heritage sector, as well as research results on quality of service (QoS) mechanisms in internet protocol (IP) networks that support such applications.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper's approach is a literature review.
Findings
Cultural heritage multimedia applications require greater bandwidth capacity, especially where multiple users share the connections. For such applications, scalability and reliability of quality of service depend on packet‐level QoS mechanisms operating in a full end‐to‐end basis.
Research limitations/implications
The paper provides a foundation for future research directions in the professional communication context. For instance, the QoS mechanisms in possible network infrastructures could be used to explore effective multimedia data dissemination across cultural heritage institutions.
Practical implications
The paper provides an overview of which technologies/mechanisms are being used most broadly and which might provide the most potential for cultural heritage institutions managers considering experimenting in the multimedia communications area.
Originality/value
QoS mechanisms that support multimedia applications in the cultural heritage sector need to become well known by cultural heritage institutions managers and professional associations in the fields of libraries, museums and archives. This paper provides a useful overview of the topic.

Outlines the establishment of a course in multimedia technology, which forms part of the curriculum for librarians at the Royal School of Librarianship in Copenhagen, Denmark. The course is organized by the cataloguing and classification department and is presented to final‐year students; it is based on the use of already known theories in classification and cataloguing for structuring multimedia applications. An important part of the course is the creation of a multimedia workstation allowing students to work with the hardware and software required.

Abstract
Purpose
Multimedia facilitates knowledge acquisition, which has a significant impact on students' learning and is a big potential of information and communication technology. Learning through multimedia has psychological benefits for the learner in addition to being used for recreational learning. To define the cognitive theory of multimedia in successful learning and to develop the study's hypothesis, this study aims to focus on the psychological expedients of the learner and their perception of multimedia learning.
Design/methodology/approach
The longitudinal study was conducted to understand the effect of the use of multimedia applications in learning on blended learning and the metamemory satisfaction of learners. The data were collected in three phases and analysed on partial least squares structural equation modelling 4 software.
Findings
Learners' use of multimedia applications is positively connected with their perceptions of themselves as critical thinkers and their attitudes towards learning. Blended learning and the satisfaction of metamemory are directly impacted by the learner's attitude. The same is true for how critical thinking self-perception affects blended learning. Additionally, the association between the use of multimedia applications and one's critical thinking self-perception is positively moderated by mindfulness. Similarly, conscientiousness influences the connection between attitude and metamemory satisfaction in a favourable way. Finally, metamemory satisfaction is positively and significantly impacted by blended learning.
Research limitations/implications
Learning through multimedia affects the sensory system and then imitates the real world which helps in a better understanding of the stimuli. The psychological effects and applications (rational utilization of perception, memory and emotions) are highlighted which shows scrutiny of the multimedia content in effective learning.
Originality/value
Multimedia learning helps in gaining attention, increasing retention and improving comprehension resulting in remembering the content and boosting effective learning. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first one to look into how the usage of multimedia effects blended learning and metamemory satisfaction in terms of learners' attitudes and perceptions. It also discusses two phenomena: the multimodality of human perception and the so-called polyphony of reality in the emergence of this new technology.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to determine academic librarians’ awareness and application of multimedia content for information literacy (IL) instruction at the North-West University in South Africa.
Design/methodology/approach
This study used both the survey and focus group interviews to gather data from the university's faculty librarians.
Findings
The results of this study show that despite the majority of librarians being aware of the existence and benefits of multimedia tools that can complement their traditional instructional practices, very few actually apply the tools for IL instructional practices. Among the multimedia tools that the librarians often use for the IL instruction, LibGuides were the most favourable because of their ease of use. The main reasons for not using the multimedia tools cited by librarians include the lack of infrastructure and insufficient skills.
Practical implications
This study recommends the reskilling of librarians by training them in the use of multimedia tools for IL instruction.
Social implications
The paper sheds light on the current strategies being implemented by faculty librarians in providing IL using multimedia tools. It also outlines the importance of multimedia tools in enhancing eLearning endeavours. Multimedia skills for librarians can also be essential during times of crisis such as the recent COVID-19 outbreak.
Originality/value
This study is a welcome contribution to the role of ICTs in enhancing library activities during the 4IR. The voice of the librarians in this area has also been minimally represented. This study, therefore, seeks to address these gaps in published scholarly literature.

Purpose
The goal of this paper is to provide contributions aimed at illustrating how the autonomic computing concept may be applied within a multi‐path transport protocol called multi‐path TCP (MPTCP) with the aim of providing as high as possible a quality of service (QoS) for mobile and multimedia applications.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper's general vision is to define how to use the general IBM Autonomic framework for the design of a new and generic autonomous transport layer aimed at fitting as best as possible both QoS requirements and network constraints.
Findings
Several QoS‐aware mechanisms are proposed and evaluated and an ontology‐based semantic model for the dynamic discovery of MPTCP mechanisms is also presented. This work was done within the A2NETS project funded by the ITEA 2 program, a strategic pan‐European program for advanced pre‐competitive research and development (R&D). A2NETS aims at developing a set of common services for M2M devices communicating within heterogeneous networks.
Originality/value
The originality of this paper is the study of the QoS benefits induced by the implementation of the “partial reliability” concept in MPTCP for interactive video applications based on the codec H.264. The second contribution of the paper is that it deals with the decision process that has to be enforced to provide such an adaptable MPTCP with self‐autonomic capabilities. Towards this goal, a semantic ontology‐based model has been proposed allowing to classify and to define clearly the semantic of the different QoS‐oriented mechanisms that have been proposed for MPTCP. This ontology is aimed at being used by the autonomic manager during the decision process step.

Abstract
New application types such as distributed multimedia applications have to provide a certain quality of service (QoS) to the users. Since they handle time‐critical information such as audio and video data, they need appropriate support from the system components and especially from the network. New protocols and mechanisms have been developed over recent years to offer integrated services by serving both discrete media data (such as text and graphics) and continuous‐media data (i.e. audio and video) in digital networks. Internet and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) are the main players in this area and both possess QoS architectures which allow them to integrate services of data‐ and tele‐ communications formerly performed by separate infrastructures. We believe that both will co‐exist for a significant amount of time, potentially complemented by other, perhaps simpler, approaches which are currently under investigation, such as differentiated services. Therefore, an interaction between these two architectures is necessary. In this paper, we discuss interaction approaches for the QoS architectures developed for the Internet and for ATM. We base this description on requirements and scenarios of multimedia applications and on the possible communication patterns considering different topological variants for heterogeneous Internet‐ATM networks.

Purpose
Assembly sequence planning (ASP) is a crucial job during assembly process design. However, it is still difficult to reuse the existing solution to solve a new ASP problem. In particular, with the rapid development of digital technologies, the reusable assembly information of an existing solution is not concentrated in one multimedia but dispersed in multiple heterogeneous multimedia, e.g. text, three-dimensional graphics, even images and videos. This paper aims to propose a multimedia case (MC)-based reasoning framework to solve ASP by reusing the existing solution whose assembly information is dispersed in multimedia.
Design/methodology/approach
The proposed framework is designed with the introduction of the MC. An MC seamlessly integrates the dispersed assembly information of an existing solution. Under the proposed concept and architecture, the assembly information of an existing solution is extracted to build assembly descriptors of multimedia. Therefore, the MC is captured by organizing the assembly descriptors of corresponding multimedia.
Findings
By means of the framework proposed, it is possible to reuse the existing solution whose assembly information is dispersed in multimedia to solve ASP. Moreover, the extraction method of assembly information can flexibly parse most of the multimedia. Finally, the MC has the capability to represent the existing solution by collecting dispersed assembly information.
Originality/value
The proposed framework can discover the similar existing solution and avoid the potential failures confronted in the past so that the feasibility of ASP result can be improved as much as possible.
