Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to design and develop a business dynamics model in entrepreneurial orientation for employees (EOE).

Design/methodology/approach

The mental model uses the casual loops, stock and flow diagrams in the business dynamics model. Hiring rate, Quit rate, Skill rate, Skill growth rate, EOE skill inventory rate, Performance rate etc. were defined and used with EOE metrics governing the model. VENSIM software package was used to simulate and validate the model using sensitivity analysis. The case study method was used to experiment a pre/post EOE training intervention with employees in an ITES organisation in India. Using a validated EOE questionnaire, data were captured from employees in an ITES organisation in Chennai, for validation of business dynamics model.

Findings

The time frame for imparting initial EOE training and retraining time after EOE training were simulated and results were summarised.

Research limitations/implications

Future researchers can extend this work and apply in other industries and geographies also. Any organisation can customise and utilise the business dynamics EOE model as per their requirements

Practical implications

The model facilitates the measurement of both individual employee performance as well as organisational performance. The EOE business dynamics model contributes to the development of two indices namely entrepreneurial orientation for employees index (EOEI) and organisational performance index (OPI). The policy planners, human resource strategists, management consultants can utilise the business dynamics EOE model for effective decision making, budgetary allocations towards training initiatives and so on.

Originality/value

The model is a novel and first of its kind using business dynamics in entrepreneurial orientation for employees. The human resource planners can use this model for forecasting the man power needs as well as skill development, employee empowerment and organisational development.

Abstract

Third‐generation mobile networks will be characterized by the convergence of the wireless, the fixed Internet and the media industries. Expectations on agents’ ability to generate revenues (and profits) within this technological intersection are high and will be further geared up by the future broadband capacity. Previous experience from the fixed side points to problems for content providers to charge for their products. The easy reproducibility of content has often forced its providers to offer it free of charge. It has therefore generated little revenue. The question, however, is whether this pricing problem will continue on the wireless side with the introduction of mobile Internet. This paper examines the revenues of I‐mode for an answer and uses the theory of the experimentally organized economy and innovative pricing to arrive at an answer. The conclusions are supported by 650 interviews, 450 of which are I‐mode users and 200 potential users of the service.

Abstract

Entrepreneurial activity is currently a primary concern of many developed economies that struggle with changes in their industrial structures. Many of the traditionally strong industries are encountering strong global competition and declining markets, and national competitiveness is often said to be built on new entrepreneurial firms that are able to grow in global markets. The facilitating national systems for these firms are covered in the emerging start-up ecosystem discussion. This chapter aims to contribute to this discussion by incorporating an analysis of the variety of actors and activities needed in start-up industries that rely on competence bloc theory. Furthermore, inspired by cultural-historical activity theory, the study specifies the contextual-, temporal- and renewal-related determinants of the activity of start-up ecosystems. As a result, a framework for examining start-up ecosystems as platforms for high-growth entrepreneurship is proposed in terms of its core constituencies that influence the emergence and non-emergence of high-growth firms.

Abstract

Purpose

Two-way trade flows between Africa and China have increased rapidly between 2001 and 2010. Mauritius being a resource-scarce economy has been no stranger to the “China phenomenon”. China is the third largest supplier to the Mauritian market but will soon be competing for first place. Exports to China, on the other hand, have remained marginal. The paper aims to examine the potential impacts of China's spectacular rise on the Mauritian economy through the trade channel.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper draws extensively on secondary data to explain the low export penetration of Mauritian goods on Chinese markets and to examine the impact of Chinese dominance of the global apparel market on Mauritius' clothing exports to third markets. The paper first considers several potential explanations for Mauritius' low levels of exports to China, which are: Mauritius' exports are not competitive enough to penetrate the Chinese market; China does not need to import from Mauritius since it produces all that Mauritius exports; and the Chinese market is relatively closed to Mauritian exports due to high tariffs and other non-tariff barriers. The paper investigates each of the above hypotheses using secondary data from UN COMTRADE. The paper computes a set of revealed comparative advantage (RCA) indices for Mauritius and China and shows how they have evolved over time. Given the inherent shortcoming of the RCA measure, the paper provides a complementary assessment based on an analysis of cost competitiveness factors. The Export Similarity Index and the Trade Complementarity Index are also computed to test the above hypotheses. Second, using disaggregated data on clothing exports from UN COMTRADE, the paper analyses the product categories where Chinese competition has been most acute.

Findings

In conclusion, the whole body of evidence presented in this study points to bleak prospects for Mauritian exporters to enter the Chinese market in a significant manner. Worse, because most of the causes of this low export penetration are due to systemic factors – such as a lack of trade complementarity, poor export competitiveness, export market bias and an irrational fear of doing business in China – the current situation is unlikely to improve in the future in the absence of bold policy measures.

Originality/value

This is the first study looking at the trade relationship between Mauritius and China.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper's aim is to test for the presence of fractional integration, or long memory, in the daily returns of the Portuguese stock market using autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average (ARFIMA), generalised autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) and ARFIMA‐FIGARCH models.

Design/methodology/approach

The data cover two periods: 4 January 1993‐13 January 2006 (full sample), and 1 February 2002‐13 January 2006 (that is, data are considered after the merger of the Portuguese Stock Exchange with Euronext).

Findings

The results from the full sample show strong evidence of long memory in stock returns. When data after the merger are considered, weaker evidence of long memory is found. It is concluded that the Portuguese stock market is more efficient after the merger with Euronext.

Originality/value

The findings of this paper are helpful to financial managers and investors dealing with Portuguese stock indices.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to deliver a structured literature review of existing literature on agri-fresh food supply chain quality (AFSCQ) over a period of 23 years (1994 to mid-2016) and provide a platform for practitioners and researchers trying to identify the existing state of work, gaps in current research, and future directions in the field of AFSCQ.

Design/methodology/approach

The existing literature is classified on the basis of several classes like number of publications per year, journal-wise publications, studies across various countries, growth of empirical research, data analysis methods or tool used, issues related to supply chain quality as well as performance measurement (with respect to entity of analysis, level of analysis and element of exchange).

Findings

Most of the research publications discuss issues in developed countries, while relatively lesser publications are available on issues in developing countries. Hence, larger opportunities in the field of AFSCQ are available in developing countries. Empirical research is also growing in the field of AFSCQ. Largely research publications make use of “case study” research approach and “statistical analysis” as a quantitative tool of research. The literature is also categorized under the various issues of supply chain quality such as sustainability management, information management, logistic management, collaboration and coordination management, strategic management, demand management, inventory management, food safety, performance management, supply chain integration, supplier management, quality management, etc. It was found that in the majority of articles, information management, sustainability management, and logistics management are very critical issues as far as AFSCQ is concerned. Performance measurement of agri-fresh food supply chain is also on a growing stage. It is also an integral part of AFSCQ.

Originality/value

Most of the prior reviews are concentrated on a particular issue as production and distribution planning for agri-foods, temperature monitoring, corporate and consumer social responsibility, traceability system and ignore the wider perception. There exists a necessity of having a detailed review to cover up all the issues in AFSCQ. This review fills this gap in the extant AFSCQ literature.

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze and give directions for advancing research in stock market volatility highlighting its features, structural breaks and emerging developments. This study offers a platform to research the benchmark studies to know the research gap and give directions for extending future research.

Design/methodology/approach

The author has performed the literature review, and, reference checking as per the snowballing approach. Firstly, the author has started with outlining and simplifying the significance of the subject area, the review illustrating the various elements along with the research gaps and emphasizing the finding.

Findings

This work summarizes the studies covering the volatility, its properties and structural breaks on various aspects such as techniques applied, subareas and the markets. From the review’s analysis, no study has clarified the supremacy of any model because of the different market conditions, nature of data and methodological aspects. The outcome of this research work has delivered further magnitude to research the benchmark studies for the upcoming work on stock market volatility. This paper has also proposed the hybrid volatility models combining artificial intelligence with econometric techniques to detect noise, sudden changes and chaotic information easily.

Research limitations/implications

The author has taken the research papers from the scholarly journal published in the English language only and the author may also consider other nonscholarly or other language journals.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this research work highlights an updated and more comprehensive framework examining the properties and demonstrating the contemporary developments in the field of stock market volatility.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to assess how far Jamaica has come regarding women economic empowerment, female entrepreneurship and its development policies in favour of women entrepreneurship development.

Design/methodology/approach

This exploratory study employs a mixed method approach to achieve its research objectives, consisting of literature review and corroboration with existing database and indices. Key insights of research on female entrepreneurship are used to reflect on published data to assess progress of female entrepreneurship development in Jamaica. The 2017 editions of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor and Gender Entrepreneurship and Development Index were examined to gain a better understanding of how the Jamaican business environment has progressed or regressed over time and how the economic development and business environment impact female participation in Jamaica’s labour force and entrepreneurial initiatives.

Findings

The economic conditions in Jamaica and the role of females as domestic caregiver have made it difficult for women to enter the labour force even though Jamaican women are relatively better educated than men. Women remain at a disadvantage in the labour force. Jamaica’s legislation and budget allocations in favour of female entrepreneurship are analysed to identify where and how Jamaica is investing its efforts to improve women’s participation in the labour force. The authors conclude with suggestions on how the Jamaican government could facilitate further women entrepreneurship development to reach a more gender balanced inclusive socio-economic development.

Originality/value

While global policy has been promoting women empowerment through entrepreneurial development, little is known on the actual outcome of such human capital investment strategy and the critical vectors that contribute to such outcome. This scarcity of knowledge is also applicable to Jamaica. This paper attempts to contribute to women entrepreneurship research by reaching beyond the output-oriented perspective of various skill development programmes and attempts to link policy choice with overall macro results of entrepreneurship development in general and women entrepreneurship development in specific. The study thus provides a rare glimpse of the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Jamaica.
