Abstract

This article analyses how different configurations of stakeholders create opportunities for the production of popular TV sports contests. Based on qualitative methodologies, biathlon and cross-country skiing are used as contrasting cases. The paper concludes that the relative success of the International Biathlon Union is due to a favourable network position in relation to stakeholders. By comparison, the International Ski Federation suffers from a weak position within a dense stakeholder network.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper is based on the simulation of wind tunnel experiment for better understanding and predicting the behavior of PET fabric in the wind tunnel. This software calculates the drag force of fabric, illustrates pressure in the surrounding of airfoil and velocity of wind in the tunnel during different angles of attack (0°, 45° and 90°). The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The sol-gel method was applied for the synthesis of silica nano particles. So, PET fabric was coated with precursor (Tetra ethyl ortho silicate) solution first and the process continued on PET fabric. The morphology of obtained hydrophobic fabric samples and their surface roughness was observed and determined by atomic microscopes (AFM and SEM). Experimental data were used for simulation and modeling, and then results were interpreted.

Findings

It was concluded that the surface roughness and its amount can play a significant role in the drag reduction of PET fabric, and surface roughness can change the boundary layer from laminar to turbulent.

Originality/value

At 45 degrees angle of attack, larger boundary layer separation results in a large increase in the drag force. This model is useful for predicting flow behavior in the experimental wind tunnel.

Abstract

Since the 1970s there have been extraordinary changes and growth in Canadian sport in terms of access, opportunity and recognition. Yet, the gains and successes of girls and women’s sport are often written, told and retold as uncomplicated success stories, as progress, with the battles fought and the complex negotiations of the past eerily absent. In this chapter, we turn to the work of feminist poststructuralist Avery Gordon to consider gender, feminisms and sport in the Canadian context. We do this by putting various moments in time in conversation with one another and considering our current moment in light of what has come before but is often forgotten, overlooked or even suppressed. We argue that the need for feminist praxis remains significant in Canadian sport and it is imperative that we continue to shed light on ghostly (dis)appearances in narratives of sport in Canada.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to experimentally and numerically investigate the interference characteristics between two ski-jump jets on the flip bucket in a large dam spillway when two floodgates are running.

Design/methodology/approach

The volume of fluid (VOF) method together with the Realizable k-ε turbulence model were used to predict the flow in two ski-jump jets and the free surface motion in a large dam spillway. The movements of the two gates were simulated using a dynamic mesh controlled by a User Defined Function (UDF). The simulations were run using the prototype dam as the field test to minimize errors due to scale effects. The simulation results are compared with field test observations.

Findings

The transient flow calculations, accurately predict the two gate discharges compared to field data with the predicted ski-jump jet interference flow pattern similar to the observed shapes. The transient simulations indicate that the main reason for the deflected nappe is the larger opening difference between the two gates as the buttress side gate closes. When both gates are running, the two ski-jump jets interfere in the flip bucket and raise the jet nappe to near the buttress to form a secondary flow on this jet nappe surface. As the gate continues to close, the nappe surface continues to rise and the surface secondary flow become stronger, which deflects the nappe over the side buttress.

Originality/value

A dynamic mesh is used to simulate the transient flow behavior of two prototype running gates. The transient flow simulation clarifies the hydraulics mechanism for how the two ski-jump jets interfere and deflect the nappe.

Abstract

Purpose

Aircraft carriers are essential for modern naval operations. Takeoff maneuver is critical because of the short runway distance. The ski-jump ramp is a system which increases the angle of attack of the aircraft, so an extra lift is obtained. Regarding the flow configuration over the ski-jump ramp at ahead wind conditions, the complex aerodynamic environment generated by the ramp configuration influences aircraft operations. This flow field is mainly characterized by a low velocity recirculation bubble that reduces aircraft performances. The purpose of this paper is to find a solution to reduce these adverse effects, by means of flow control devices, which opens a wide field of research.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents wind tunnel tests performed to study the flow configuration in the vicinity of the ski-jump ramp and the flow control devices effects. A 1:100 scaled ship model was built to develop experimental tests by using flow control devices fabricated by means of additive manufacturing. Particle image velocimetry technique was used to measure the velocity flow field and the turbulence intensity maps.

Findings

Interesting results were obtained when the angle between the intersection of the ski-jump ramp and the columnar vortex generator (CVG) is modified. The results showed a high reduction of the recirculation bubble generated over the flight deck.

Originality/value

CVG has presented encouraging results as a passive flow control device. A study of the variation of CVG geometrical parameters has been developed.

Abstract

Purpose

From a project owner's perspective, it is obvious that a project shall contribute to achieving the organisation's strategic goals. The purpose of this paper is to find out what project owners can do to ensure value creation in their projects, what owners actually do in the few cases in which they are actively involved in ensuring value creation and what is the result of their choice.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors have analysed 12 projects in the Norwegian construction industry, using a qualitative approach. A general business framework for understanding projects has been applied in order to identify possible shortcomings and success factors. The authors have used semi-structured in-depth interviews combined with questionnaires for data collection.

Findings

The study reveals an absence of project strategy, resulting in projects which only to a small extent achieve strategic goals. This lack of strategic perspective in project management is also recognised by the research literature as a common tendency. Traditional project management approaches concentrate on time, cost and quality, instead of on providing strategic success. Based on business literature, the authors identify the value proposition and the customer value proposition as being essential.

Practical implications

The authors recommend construction project owners – as described in the literature – to appoint a project sponsor responsible for communicating a value proposition and business rationale to the project supplier. The sponsor should also be responsible for aligning the suppliers’ customer value proposition with the owner's strategy. The authors recommend that the project sponsor be supported by a project governance body. This will help project owners to ensure value creation in their projects, as described in the literature. The authors pinpoint a need for bridging theory and practice.

Originality/value

The originality of the paper lies in introducing insights from business literature to the construction industry. In the value proposition the owner defines the benefits the project is to provide. The customer value proposition is the statement where the supplier aligns the proposed project output with the project owner's needs. The project governance body is responsible for ensuring this communication process.
