Abstract

This paper reports the available results of an ongoing shell finite element investigation on the distortional buckling, post-buckling and ultimate strength behaviour of cold-formed steel lipped channel columns (centrally compressed members) subjected to high temperatures typically caused by fire conditions. Two column collapse situations are dealt with, corresponding to different loading strategies: (i) application of an increasing compressive load to columns subjected to a constant (uniform) temperature distribution, in order to obtain failure loads, and (ii) application of a progressive temperature raise to axially compressed column, in order to obtain failure temperatures - the latter approach provides a more realistic simulation of fire conditions. The steel material behaviour at high temperatures is described by the constitutive model prescribed in Eurocode 3 for cold-formed steel. After validating the numerical model adopted, through the comparison with results of simulations reported in the literature and based on experimentally obtained stress-strain laws, the paper presents numerical results concerning lipped channel columns made of various steel grades under fire conditions - they consist of (i) non-linear equilibrium paths, yielded by steady state and transient column analyses, and (ii) the corresponding failure loads/stresses and temperatures.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper is mainly aimed at the structural performance of compound cold-formed galvanised steel beams under fire conditions based on the results of a large programme of experimental tests and numerical simulations. The main objective of this research was to assess the critical temperature and time of the studied beams. Other important goals of this research work were to investigate the influence of the cross-sections (C, lipped-I, R and 2R beams) and, above all, of the axial restraint (0, 0.45, 3, 7.5, 15, 30, ∞ kN/mm) to the thermal elongation of the beam and the rotational restraint at beam supports (0, 15, 80, 150, 300, 1,200 and ∞ kN.m/rad) on the fire resistance of this kind of beams.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper still provides details of the simulation methodology for achieving numerical stability and faithful representation of detailed structural behaviour and compares the simulation and experimental results, including beam failure modes, measured beam axial forces and beam mid-span deflections.

Findings

Good agreement between Abaqus simulations and experimental observations confirms that the finite element models developed with the Abaqus/standard solver are suitable for predicting the structural fire behaviour of restrained cold-formed steel beams.

Originality/value

The results showed above all that the effect of the stiffness of the surrounding structure seems to decrease with the increasing slenderness of the beams.

Abstract

Purpose

The capability of steel columns to support their design loads is highly affected by the time of exposure and temperature magnitude, which causes deterioration of mechanical properties of steel under fire conditions. It is known that structural steel loses strength and stiffness as temperature increases, particularly above 400 °C. The duration of time in which steel is exposed to high temperatures also has an impact on how much strength it loses. The time-dependent response of steel is critical when estimating load carrying capacity of steel columns exposed to fire. Thus, investigating the structural response of cold-formed steel (CFS) columns is gaining more interest due to the nature of such structural elements.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, experiments were conducted on two CFS configurations: back-to-back (B-B) channel and toe-to-toe (T-T) channel sections. All CFS column specimens were exposed to different temperatures following the standard fire curve and cooled by air or water. A total of 14 tests were conducted to evaluate the capacity of the CFS sections. The axial resistance and yield deformation were noted for both section types at elevated temperatures. The CFS column sections were modelled to simulate the section's behaviour under various temperature exposures using the general-purpose finite element (FE) program ABAQUS. The results from FE modelling agreed well with the experimental results. Ultimate load of experiment and finite element model (FEM) are compared with each other. The difference in percentage and ratio between both are presented.

Findings

The results showed that B-B configuration showed better performance for all the investigated parameters than T-T sections. A noticeable loss in the ultimate strength of 34.5 and 65.6% was observed at 90 min (986℃) for B-B specimens cooled using air and water, respectively. However, the reduction was 29.9 and 46% in the T-T configuration, respectively.

Originality/value

This research paper focusses on assessing the buckling strength of heated CFS sections to analyse the mode of failure of CFS sections with B-B and T-T design configurations under the effect of elevated temperature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the influences of residual stresses which were induced during roll-forming sections on lateral-torsional buckling of thin-walled cold-formed steel channel and built-up I-sections beams. Built-up I section is made up of two back-to-back cold-formed channel beams. In this direction, at the primary stage, the roll-forming process of a channel section was simulated in ABAQUS environment and the accuracy of the result was verified with those existing experiments. Residual stresses and strains in both longitudinal and circumferential transverse directions were extracted and considered in the lateral-torsional buckling analysis under uniform end moments. The contribution of the current research is devoted to the numerical simulation of the rolling process in ABAQUS software enabling to restore the remaining stresses and strains for the buckling analysis in the identical software. The results showed that the residual stresses decrease considerably the lateral-torsional buckling strength as they have a major impact on short-span beams for channel sections and larger span for built-up I sections. The obtained moment capacity from the buckling analysis was compared to the predictions by American Iron and Steel Institute design code and it is found to be conservative.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper has explained a numerical study on the roll-forming process of a channel section and member moment capacities related to the lateral-torsional buckling of the rolled form channel and built-up I-sections beams under uniform bending about its major axis. It has also investigated the effects of residual stresses and strains on the behaviour of this buckling mode.

Findings

The residuals decrease the moment capacities of the channel beams and have major effect on shorter spans and also increase the local buckling strength of compression flange. But the residuals have major effect on larger spans for built-up I sections. It could be seen that the ratio of moment (with residuals and without residuals) for singly symmetric sections is more pronounced than doubly symmetric sections. So it is recommended to use doubly symmetric section of cold-formed section beams.

Originality/value

The incorporation of residual stresses and strains in the process of numerical simulation of rolled forming of cold-formed steel sections under end moments is the main contribution of the current work. The effect of residual stresses and strains on the lateral-torsional buckling is, for the first time, addressed in the paper.

Abstract

Several finite element models were proposed to investigate the effects of voids and their interactions on SMT solder joint reliability in thermal mismatch loading. Both linear elastic analysis and non‐linear and time‐dependent finite element analysis were performed on models with different sizes and locations of voids in solder joints. The focus was on the interactions of the two voids. Various distances between voids are considered. Constitutive equations accounting for both plasticity and creep for one solder material were assumed and implemented in a finite element program. The following observations have been obtained: (i) the stress and strain in a solder joint of two voids are different from those of a one void joint; (ii) the stress and strain reach a maximum for a particular void size and location either along the interface of the solder joint or at the edges of voids; (iii) the initiation of interfacial debonding may be induced by the interaction of the voids; (iv) creep due to thermal cycling has a significant effect on solder joint reliability.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to compare and evaluate the influence of package designs and characteristics on the mechanical reliability of electronic assemblies when subjected to harmonic vibrations.

Design/methodology/approach

Using finite element analysis (FEA), the effect of package design-related parameters, including the interconnect array configuration, i.e. full vs perimeter, and package size, on solder mechanical stresses are fully addressed.

Findings

The results of FEA simulations revealed that the number of solder rows or columns available in the array, could significantly affect solder stresses. In addition, smaller packages result in lower solder stresses and differing distributions.

Originality/value

In literature, there are no papers that discuss the effect of solder array layout on electronic packages vibration reliability. In addition, general rules for designing electronic assemblies subjected to harmonic vibration loadings are proposed in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the lateral behavior of cold-formed steel walls with K-shaped bracing by finite element modeling.

Design/methodology/approach

The braces which have the same section as those for studs and tracks are connected to the frame by screw connections. By pushover analysis, lateral performance of two frame categories, with different dimensions and bracing arrangements, is examined, and the force-displacement diagram and the ultimate strength of walls are extracted. Probable failure modes during lateral loading including distortional buckling of studs, buckling in braces and failure of connections are simulated in the numerical model, and some strengthening suggestions would be offered to prevent brittle failures and, therefore, to increase the lateral strength of the walls.

Findings

The strengthened walls are examined, and their seismic behavior is compared with the original walls. Finally, a parametric study is carried out to evaluate the effect of factors such as thickness of frame members, frame height and yield tension of members on lateral behavior of the shear walls.

Originality/value

In the present research, lateral strength and failure modes of nine types of cold-formed steel shear walls with different arrangements of K-shaped bracing are examined by non-linear finite element analysis, and a parametric study is carried out to extract the effect of the wall frame characteristics on the lateral behavior. Shear walls are classified into two series.

Purpose

Sigma cross-section profiles are often chosen for their lightness and ability to support large spans, offering a favourable bending resistance. However, they are more susceptible to local, distortional and lateral-torsional buckling, as possible failure modes when compared to common I-sections and hollow cross-sections. However, the instability phenomena associated to these members are not completely understood in fire situation. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyse the behaviour of beams composed of cold-formed sigma sections at elevated temperatures.

Design/methodology/approach

This study presents a numerical analysis, using advanced methods by applying the finite element software SAFIR. A numerical analysis of the behaviour of simply supported cold-formed sigma beams in the case of fire is presented considering different cross-section slenderness values, elevated temperatures, steel grades and bending moment diagrams. Comparisons are made between the obtained numerically ultimate bending capacities and the design bending resistances from Eurocode 3 Part 1–2 rules and its respective French National Annex (FN Annex).

Findings

The current design expressions revealed to be over conservative when compared with the obtained numerical results. It was possible to observe that the FN Annex is less conservative than the general prescriptions, the first having a better agreement with the numerical results.

Originality/value

Following the previous comparisons, new fire design formulae are analysed. This new methodology, which introduces minimum changes in the existing formulae, provides at the same time safety and accuracy when compared to the numerical results, considering the occurrence of local, distortional and lateral-torsional buckling phenomena in these members at elevated temperatures.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the results of a study on the behaviour of cold-formed galvanized steel beams subjected to fire, using the results of a large programme of experimental tests.

Design/methodology/approach

The research investigated the influence of web stiffeners in the sections and the stiffness of the surrounding structure, including the axial and rotational restraining to the thermal elongation, on the flexural behaviour of the beams in case of fire. In other words, the structural response of different open cold-formed steel beams, with and without web stiffeners, was compared in case of fire.

Findings

The results showed that a good choice between using cold-formed steel beams, with and without web stiffeners, may depend on the section shape and the internal forces generated in these members during a fire.

Originality/value

Temperatures in the furnace and at several points of the beams, as well as deformations and restraining forces and moments, were measured to achieve those goals and consequently to assess the critical time and temperature of these beams.

Steel beams composed of cold-formed sections are common in buildings because of their lightness and ability to support large spans. However, the instability phenomena associated to these members are not completely understood in fire situation. Thus, the purpose of this study is to analyse the behaviour of beams composed of cold-formed lipped channel sections at elevated temperatures.

Design/methodology/approach

A numerical analysis is made, applying the finite element program SAFIR, on the behaviour of simply supported cold formed steel beams at elevated temperatures. A parametric study, considering several cross-sections with different slenderness’s values, steel grades and bending diagrams, is presented. The obtained numerical results are compared with the design bending resistances determined from Eurocode 3 Part 1-2 and its French National Annex (FN Annex).

Findings
