Abstract

This chapter assesses the economic security of enterprises on the example of the textile industry of Uzbekistan. The authors considered the ways to identify new textile enterprises in Uzbekistan and studied the issues related to the enterprises' financial security. The process of index formation and its dependence on the initial data is also of interest. Given that the level of receivables turnover is gradually decreasing, we can assume that the company's customers will accumulate late payments and return them near the end of the financial year. This situation can increase liquidity indicators, which shows the low efficiency of the system for managing accounts with customers and the lack of working money during the financial year. This hypothesis is also confirmed by the decrease in the capital ratio during the period analyzed. The proposed methodology was tested in the automated Microsoft Excel, which made it possible to quickly and efficiently form the final calculated indicator. In addition, this methodology allows users to expand the range of inputs and double-check other factors depending on market conditions.

Abstract

This article analyses the issue of discipline violations in a Russian textile company. Discipline violations proliferated in Soviet times and were tolerated by managers. The cause has been identified in the limited form of control exercised over the production process, resulting from the social relations existing in the Soviet Union. Evidence from the case study indicates that no fundamental change has occurred in this area since the transition. The research documents the material and psychological hardships experienced by workers, the relational practices constraining line managers, and it tries to discern the conceptual and operative limits of disciplinary campaigns by top management.

Abstract

The research aims to identify the importance of the Republic of Türkiye in the global textile market. The research methodology is based on basic methods of scientific cognition, such as analysis, synthesis, deduction, and induction. From the particular methods used, it is worth highlighting the applicable comparison method. During the research, the authors carried out a content analysis, mainly of scientific works by Turkish scientists and news from the Turkish media. The research object is the global textile industry market. Nowadays, Türkiye faces damaged industrial buildings and an acute labor shortage. The country will need to spend a lot of time and efforts to restore its former production capacity in economically important regions, which will affect the country's export potential. COVID-19 has greatly affected the state of various sectors of the economy; the global textile market is no exception. Unlike other sectors of the economy, the global textile market recovered quickly; by 2021, it had regained its production capacity. In turn, Türkiye was even able to exceed its exports and increase its role in the world market. The country did not have time to reach new heights: on February 6, 2023, several powerful earthquakes occurred in economically important provinces of Türkiye. Most of them are provinces of the expensive the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) project, where 60% of the cotton of all Türkiye is produced, and the population mainly works in the textile industry.

Abstract

Buying secondhand clothing is not only interesting for consumers wanting to save money but also for sustainable clothing enthusiasts. It is now among a number of consumption practices which slow down fast fashion production while saving 10 to 20 times the energy (Fletcher, 2008, p. 100). While most of the recent scholarly work focuses on secondhand consumers (Bianchi & Birtwistle, 2010; Franklin, 2011; Norum, 2015), this paper aims to examine business activities. This perspective from economic anthropology enhances understandings of secondhand clothing, as research to-date has tended to neglect the semiotic function of clothing while underlining exchanges. To gain insight into the dynamics of the sector in Germany today, two businesses from Hamburg have been ethnographically examined by the author since 2014. This study outlines their work practices and explains the development of this high-end segment of the market from the 1970s until the digital age. For businesses, the digitalization of the trade has had massive effects on their business practice because it seems to solve inherent problems connected to the selling of pre-owned clothing. I argue that the digitalization did not only promote acceptance of buying secondhand clothing in Germany but also the emergence of new businesses models.

Abstract

From Batik cities to woven textile regions, Indonesia possesses several fashion destinations with remarkable textile heritage. The rise of fashion heritage destinations is characterized by avid textile lovers and fashion followers that promote the regions. Several diversifications of tourism alternatives are analyzed, such as rural tourism with experiential textile-making workshops, urban destinations connected to contemporary fashion heritage, architectural works inspired from/to textile heritage, as well as fashion week cities that spark the interests of global fashion designers to visit the country. This chapter evaluates the current state, its rising challenges, and to what extent it may be promoted through digital technologies, based on local practitioners and the governmental perspectives.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper deals with the international expansion of manufacturing small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through the opening of retail outlets in foreign countries. The paper develops and discusses five research questions.

Methodology/approach

The paper discusses emerging data from the analysis of a database set up in recent years. In particular, it deals with 1,419 retail operations regarding 246 Italian fashion brands in 77 foreign markets during the period from 2005 and 2010.

Findings

The paper points out that retail operations are largely used by Italian fashion SMEs to internationalize. This form of entry in foreign markets is used to develop in both mature and emerging markets and it seems related to the brand potential of Italian fashion SMEs abroad.

Research limitations

The paper is limited to the case of Italian fashion brands and to the period 2005–2010.

Originality/value

The paper considers an unexplored area of the internationalization theory of SMEs, that of the development abroad through retail store openings. The paper offers insights on the extent to what this strategy is used by Italian fashion brands.

Abstract

Intensive agricultural production in the countries of the Aral Sea Basin has resulted in undesirable ecological and social consequences, including the drying of the Aral Sea. Water has become scarce due to a score of internal and external factors including the growing demand for water resources by the upstream countries, expansion of the irrigated areas to ease food insecurity, and the poor condition of irrigation and drainage networks. To cope with environmental consequences and regional water challenges, it is vital to look for pathways of improved integrated water resource management, higher water use efficiencies, and reducing overall water use.

A combination of value chain and water footprint analyses of the dominant crop, cotton, was applied to assess water use in different sectors of the Uzbekistan economy and to seek water saving and improved water management and efficiency options.

The findings show that reduction in water use could be achieved by diversifying the economy and moving from water intensive agricultural production to less water consuming industrial sectors by introducing water saving irrigation technologies and by raising awareness of the population about the real value of water.

The combined findings of the economic based value chain analysis and ecologically oriented water footprint analysis gave an added value for better informed decision-making to reach land, water, and ecosystem sustainability and to contribute to the Millennium Development Goals of eradicating poverty and hunger and achieving food and water security.

The chapter presents the process of decision-making and the practice of international expansion of a family business in the nineteenth century. The Swiss family business Legler moved to the area near Bergamo, Italy, in 1875, and expanded its operation over multiple generations. This chapter explores the cognitive dimension of the internationalisation process, how culture and family ties are used to understand risk and opportunities, and how a family business interprets push and pull factors under the lens of cultural self-representation and meaning creation. The historical analysis shows the importance of economic, cultural, and family-driven factors in the process of decision-making and in the practice of going abroad and making internationalisation successful and long-lasting.
