Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to document the performance of analysts' recommendations for shariah-compliant firms and non-shariah-compliant firms in the MENA region during the period between 2005 and 2009.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses post-recommendation market-adjusted returns as a measure of performance and computes returns for different holding periods. Significant positive (negative) returns following buy (sell) recommendation will indicate value relevance of these recommendations.

Findings

The results show that analysts are not able to make any value relevant recommendations for shariah-compliant firms. The author documents insignificant returns following analysts' buy and sell recommendations for shariah-compliant firms. In contrast to their performance for shariah-compliant firms, the results show that analysts are able to produce value relevant recommendations for non-shariah-complaint firms. The author reports significant returns following analysts' buy recommendations for non-shariah-complaint firms. The author also reports significantly positive spread between returns following analysts' buy and sell recommendations for non-shariah-compliant firms. Positive spread indicates that analysts are able to differentiate between well-performing and badly-performing non-shariah-compliant firms. Interestingly, in case of sell recommendations, the results show no significant value in analysts' sell recommendations for non-shariah-complaint firms.

Practical implications

The results imply that investors should not blindly follow analyst recommendations for shariah-compliant firms while making their investment decisions in the MENA region.

Originality/value

This paper makes detailed analysis of analyst recommendations for shariah-compliant firms and non-shariah-compliant firms in previously unexplored MENA region.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to critically evaluate whether the policies of green banking set by Bangladesh Bank are Shariah compliant; according to the main sources of the Shariah – Quran and Sunnah.

Design/methodology/approach

Green policy and guidelines have been divided into different categories such as environment protection, conservation of resources, risk management, educating people about green financing, transparency and disclosure and investing in green projects according to the common measures as stated in three different phases of the policy and guidelines. Subsequently, these major aspects of the green policy and guidelines are linked to the main references of the Shariah, i.e. the holy Quran and Sunnah of Prophet [peace be upon him (pbuh)].

Findings

Various verses of the holy Quran and teachings of Prophet (pbuh) related to the major categories of Green policy and guidelines are being presented to show the compliance with Shariah.

Practical implications

The Green policy and guidelines are very much in-line with Shariah. Though all types of banks in Bangladesh are bound to implement the green banking policy, however, Shariah compliance of green banking policy will be encouraging for all Islamic Banks of Bangladesh for their further and profounder involvement in it.

Social implications

As green policies are found to be Shariah complaint, the Islamic banks are expected to contribute more to the sustainable economic growth of the country by successfully implementing the green financing policies compare to their conventional counterpart.

Originality/value

Verses of holy Quran and authentic Hadiths related to environmental sustainability concept show that Islam is a green religion as well as green banking policy is Islamic.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the relationship between Shariah compliance and corporate capital structure decisions. This study explores the variation of capital structure speed of adjustment.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors’ sample includes a sample of the largest 200 nonfinancial firms trading in the Malaysian and Pakistan stock markets. This study uses ordinary least squares and dynamic two-step system generalized method of moments to test the hypotheses of the study.

Findings

The results show that Shariah-compliant firms use a lower level of leverage than the noncomplaint firms. Moreover, while both types of firms have optimal capital structures, the speed of adjustment toward the targets is slower for Shariah-complaint firms than non-Shariah-compliant firms. This variation can be seen through the different levels of market imperfection experienced by the two types of firms. Shariah-compliant firms follow Islamic rules that restrict the type and degree of leverage, thus affecting the availability of external funding to Shariah-compliant firms.

Research limitations/implications

The findings call for more development and innovation of financing instruments that comply with Shariah rules that will increase of supply of external funds for Shariah-compliant firms and, thus, reduce market imperfections that are faced by Shariah-compliant firms.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the limited number of studies that examine the nexus between conventional corporate theories and Islamic corporate finance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to measure the extent of voluntary disclosure in the 2009 annual reports of 108 Shariah‐compliant companies listed on the Kuwait Stock Exchange. The study aims to investigate three categories of voluntary disclosure: overall, conventional and Islamic disclosure.

Design/methodology/approach

Voluntary disclosure was measured using a self‐constructed index consisting of 132 items overall, 86 for conventional and 46 for Islamic information items. Annual reports were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t‐tests.

Findings

Results suggest that the mean overall voluntary disclosure by Shariah‐compliant companies is 15 percent, but 17 percent and 13 percent for the conventional and Islamic items, respectively. Voluntary disclosure of conventional items is comparable to extant studies, and higher than Islamic items.

Research limitation/implications

The study uses annual reports from 2009 because they were the most recent data available on the listed companies at the beginning of the study. Since this study was undertaken before the Shariah Advisory Council of the Capital Market Authority was established on January 1, 2012, this imposes a limitation. Future study should replicate this study to assess differences with the existence of the Council.

Practical implications

The findings provide evidence that Shariah‐complaint companies lack voluntary disclosure, especially Islamic disclosure information. As a result, the findings should be useful to lawmakers in Kuwait for improving overall disclosure practices by Shariah‐compliant companies. Preparers may use the findings to match the amount of information in their annual reports with other companies to ensure capital sourcing. Investors may use the findings for understanding disclosure behavior of Shariah‐compliant companies in Kuwait. Such findings may assist them to diversify investment portfolios.

Originality/value

This study contributes to extending the Kuwaiti literature on disclosure, and fills a gap in empirical studies on Shariah‐compliant disclosure practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on conventional and Islamic stocks by using the data spanning from February 25, 2020, to February 3, 2021, and employing a panel regression approach.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study a panel regression approach has been used.

Findings

The study finds a negative association between COVID-19 and stock (both Islamic and conventional). After splitting the data into 1st and 2nd waves, the relationship between COVID-19 and stock (both Islamic and conventional) remains the same (negative) in the case of the 1st wave. In contrast, in the case of the 2nd wave, the relationship turned out to be positive. During both waves of the pandemic, the magnitude of the effect is found to be higher for conventional stocks. Additionally, the study also analyzes the aggregate influence of COVID-19 on different sectors and finds that commercial banks, oil and gas exploration and marketing companies are the most influenced sectors. At the same time, automobiles and pharma are the least affected sectors.

Practical implications

The study suggests that markets start gaining momentum to reach their prepandemic level after absorbing the initial shock (emergence of a pandemic). The study also provides thorough insights for market regulators and policymakers by implying the dynamic relations between markets (conventional and Islamic) and financial crisis, which would allow them more effective control of crisis in future endeavors.

Originality/value

This is one of the first studies to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on both conventional and Islamic stocks, especially in the context of Pakistan.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate Shariah compliant real estate development financing and investment in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors employed desk research and survey to examine issues relating to Shariah compliant real estate development financing and investment. Following the desk research, 18 in‐depth interviews were conducted with senior executives of banks, real estate developers and consultants.

Findings

Equity Shariah instruments are found to be in high demand by real estate investors, however they are rarely offered by Islamic banks. In addition, the survey results confirm that Islamic financiers tend to partner real estate companies through land acquisition to post construction, contrary to how conventional financiers operate, therefore reducing moral hazard issues.

Research limitations/implications

As Shariah compliant real estate research and knowledge is limited, the authors faced a challenge in getting respondents who are familiar and willing to participate in the interview. Nevertheless, the 18 respondents gave adequate inputs to enable the authors to write the research paper.

Practical implications

The paper includes challenges and implications for the future developments of Shariah compliant real estate development financing and investment.

Originality/value

This paper provides the Shariah compliant perspective of real estate development financing and investment, where the current knowledge is very limited.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to comparatively analyze the effect of dividend policy on shareholders’ wealth in Shariah-compliant (SC) and noncompliant (NC) nonfinancial firms in Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

All the nonfinancial firms listed on the Pakistan stock exchange have been taken as a sample for 2016–2021. The Karachi Meezan index screening criteria were applied to screen SC firms. Based on the BPLM and Hausman test results, the authors used the fixed-effect and pooled OLS model for SC and NC firms, respectively. The F-test was used to compare the effect of each dividend policy variable on shareholders’ wealth for both firm types.

Findings

The findings reveal that the dividend policy does affect the shareholders’ wealth in both firm types. Dividend per share (DPS), dividend yield (DY) and earnings per share significantly affect the shareholders’ wealth in SC firms. For NC firms, the dividend payout, DPS and DY are critical. Moreover, the F-test results show that the DPS, DY and leverage effect on the shareholders’ wealth significantly differ for both firm types.

Research limitations/implications

This study fills the research gap in the Pakistani context specifically as well as globally by providing important insights into the relationship between a firm’s dividend policy and shareholders’ wealth for SC and NC firms. In addition, this study comprehensively compares the results for both firm types, which is also lacking in the existing literature. Because this study is based in Pakistan, the generalizability of the results would be limited.

Practical implications

The findings of this study are helpful for the management of SC and NC firms in devising their dividend policies that can maximize their shareholders’ wealth. This study also provides guidance and knowledge to investors in choosing companies for their investments that can maximize their wealth.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that analyzes the relationship between dividend policy and shareholders’ wealth for SC firms in Pakistan. It is also the first study that comprehensively compares the dividend policy relationship with shareholders’ wealth for SC and NC firms. In addition, using the F-test for joint hypotheses to compare the specific effect of each dividend policy variable is a methodological contribution of the study.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine whether citizens of non-Muslim countries accept products with a “halal” logo. In the era of globalization, one of the most crucial issues for Muslim travelers is reliable halal foods when visiting non-Muslim countries. If people in non-Muslim countries accept imported products containing halal certification logos, and such products are readily available in shops, this issue could be substantially improved.

Design/methodology/approach

Malaysia and Japan were selected as Muslim and non-Muslim countries, respectively, to conduct a choice experiment (CE) for 656 non-Muslim subjects, and estimated willingness to pay (WTP) for mineral water with and without the halal logo. A random parameter logit model was used for estimation.

Findings

The difference between the WTP for mineral water with and without the halal logo was ¥5; however, the associated coefficient is not statistically significant. This implies that the halal logo has no impact on non-Muslim subjects’ purchasing behavior. From this, we can infer that the halal products with certification logo would be accepted in Japanese shops, which may foster foreign Muslim visits.

Research limitations/implications

As the results are based on a couple of countries (Malaysia and Japan) and only one product (mineral water), further investigation using other products in different countries would be necessary. However, as suggested in the main text, the results enjoy a degree of generalizability.

Originality/value

The results of this study support the possibility of circulating halal products in non-Muslim countries and thus promoting Muslim travel abroad. No such study has examined this issue using CE.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference between the determinants of cash holdings of Shariah-compliant and non-Shariah-compliant firms, for non-financial corporations in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Design/methodology/approach

The data include all non-financial firms listed in six GCC markets over a period 2005–2019. The IdealRatings database is used to identify Shariah-compliant firms in the GCC. To examine the determinants of cash holdings, a static model is used. To confirm the applicability of the method applied, the Breusch–Pagan Lagrange Multiplier (LM) and Hausman (1978) are used to choose the most efficient and consistent static panel regression.

Findings

The results show that, for Shariah-compliant firms, the relevant determinants of cash holdings are leverage, profitability, capital expenditure, net working capital and operating cash flow. For non-Shariah-compliant firms, the only relevant determinants of cash holdings are leverage, net working capital and operating cash flow. The findings suggest that the cash holding decisions of Shariah-compliant firms can be best explained using the pecking order theory. This reveals that Shariah-compliant firms use liquid assets as their first financing option, due to the Shariah regulations.

Research limitations/implications

Future studies may investigate the optimal levels of cash holdings and compare the adjustment speeds toward target cash holdings of both the Shariah-compliant firms and their conventional counterparts.

Originality/value

This study is the first to investigate the difference between the determinants of cash holdings of Shariah-compliant and non-Shariah-compliant firms.

Purpose

Apartment purchase is an increasing investment trend in Islamic banks as clients trusted to eradicate the interest from financial dealings to capture the Islamic Principles. The paper aims to investigate the Shariah compliance in the investment of apartment purchases under Shirkah-ul milk in Bangladesh Islamic banks.

Design/Methodology/Approach

This study examined the perception of 125 clients and 25 managers from five key Islamic banks on the investment practices of apartment purchases. This study applied two data analysis methods: reflective measurement model was operated for examining the consistency, reliability, multicollinearity problems and validity; and Smart PLS-SEM (structural equation model) was used to investigate the direct impact of each explanatory variable on Shari’ah compliance in Islamic banks.

Findings

The results indicated that Islamic banks could not strictly maintain the Shariah compliance in apartment purchase. Such Shari’ah non-compliance is due to lack of knowledge and understanding with regard to bank’s objectives and philosophy, weak Shariah board, audit, weak regulatory body and supervision problem. These findings also firmly match clients’ and managers’ perceptions.

Research Limitations/Implications

A limited size of clients and bankers were involved in this study. The study focuses only on perceptions of Islamic banks’ clients and managers and avoids Muslim clients who involved conventional banks.

Originality/Value

This study provides Shariah-compliant alternatives in investment avenue for apartment purchases. These Shariah modes include Apartment Purchase Musharakah Mutanaqasa; Bai-Muajjal; and Apartment Purchases under Shirkah-ul Milk, which captures various limitations against current apartment purchase practices as well as to develop clients’ trust in Islamic banks.
