Abstract

Purpose

Innovations are vital tasks for modern two-sided platforms to grow and avoid defunct. How these two-sided platforms innovate to impact platform performance remains virtually unexplored in literature. The purpose of this paper is to classify two types of platform innovations – same-side and cross-side – and to hypothesize that their performance is contingent on platform monetization type, growth rate and user acquisition and retention costs.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected news announcements of 177 same-side producer-to-producer (P-P), 216 same-side consumer-to-consumer (C-C) and 284 cross-side producer-to-consumer (P-C) innovations from 30 two-sided platforms and used event study and econometric techniques in data analysis.

Findings

The findings reveal that same-side innovations cannot sufficiently lead to an impact on platform performance, while cross-side innovations are always beneficial. Same-side P-P innovations can affect platform performance positively on consumer-monetized platforms, whereas same-side C-C innovations can only do so on producer-monetized platforms. Besides, when platforms grow rapidly (slowly), cross-side (same-side) innovations strengthen platform performance. On platforms that are subject to higher (lower) user acquisition and retention costs, only same-side (cross-side) innovations can enhance platform performance.

Practical implications

This study provides actionable insights for platform practitioners to implement proper strategies to manage same-side and cross-side innovations based on the three platform attributes of platform monetization type, growth rate and user acquisition and retention costs.

Originality/value

This study offers the first systematic and empirical investigation of two-sided platform innovations by classifying them as same-side innovations for building capability in managing users and cross-side innovations for establishing capability in managing exchange, which are the two core capabilities for two-sided platforms to avoid defunct. This study further provides a contingency framework that is unique to the two-sided platform setting to study the performance impact of these innovations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to whether competition between platforms can be effective, thus leading to efficient allocations.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the classic linear Hoteling model, this paper builds a two-period competition model for two competing platforms using two variants, namely, a discrimination pricing model and a unified pricing model.

Findings

In the case of the discrimination pricing model, the competition is moderate, and the two platforms split the market evenly in the first stage, while both platforms tended to offer preferential treatment to new users and set higher prices for regular customers in the second stage. Compared to the unified pricing model, in the first stage, the platform can provide a higher price that depends on the cross-network effect when it implements discrimination, and thus, obtains higher profits. However, in the second stage, fierce competition leads to the release of benefits, new and regular customers obtain lower prices and the platforms lose higher profits. In the long-run, discriminatory pricing is not the best option due to lower total profits. The two platforms will implement cooperative pricing or one platform becomes dominant.

Originality/value

Instead of focusing on the cross-network effects, this paper emphasizes the role of the same-side network effect on price discrimination regarding the platforms’ competition. The same-side network effects are investigated in relation to a discrimination pricing strategy and compared to a unified pricing strategy. Another innovative aspect is the study of these network effects in a dynamic setting based on a two-period competition model for two platforms.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to develop a comprehensive model to better understand competitive dynamics between mobile payment providers in a multi-sided market featuring customers and merchants. This is undertaken by modeling customers performing financial transactions with merchants while two mobile payment systems (MPS) providers deploy different strategies to compete for market share.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors developed an agent-based simulation model using the NetLogo environment. The simulation featured two competing platform providers, 1,000 customer agents and 50 merchant agents. Past research, interviews and surveys were conducted to accurately model the behavior of the agents. Each simulation run lasted for 50 time periods. A total of 1,024 experimental conditions were designed to model different competitive environments, and 50 replications were conducted for a total of 51,200 experiments.

Findings

The simulation model provides insight into MPS platform providers’ competitive strategies by simultaneously modelling socioeconomic interactions between customers, merchants and MPS.

Research limitations/implications

From a methodological perspective, the paper contributes a comprehensive model that can be used to study competitive dynamics between competing platforms in a multi-sided market. From the perspective of competitive strategies, the results show that pricing alone is not sufficient to influence MPS diffusion. Interactions between pricing, customers’ risk perception, perceived security and ease of use of the platform create unexpected same-side and cross-side network effects, which affect MPS diffusion.

Practical implications

While pricing remains a crucial lever for MPS to compete for market share, they should focus on enhancing customers’ and merchants’ trust and reduce their risk perception. This can be done through the improvement of the user experience of their platform, development of educational materials and marketing campaigns that address concerns around security, data breaches and perceived risk.

Originality/value

The paper is a direct response to a recent call for action on studying competition between MPS platforms by simultaneously modelling the socio-economic behavior of heterogeneous consumers and merchants. The proposed agent-based simulation model can be used to provide insights into competitive strategies and as a building block for subsequent research in this area.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to solve the problem of high output voltage fluctuation and low efficiency caused by the misalignment of the magnetic coupling structure in the wireless charging system for electric vehicles. To address these issues, this paper proposes a dual LCC-S wireless power transfer (WPT) system based on the double-D double-layer quadrature (DDDQ) coil, which can realize the anti-misalignment constant voltage output of the system.

Design/methodology/approach

First, this paper establishes the equivalent circuit of a WPT system based on dual LCC-S compensation topology and analyzes its constant-voltage output characteristics and the relationship between system transmission efficiency and coupling coefficient. 1. Quadruple D (Ahmad et al., 2019) and double-D quadrature pad (DDQP) (Chen et al., 2019) coils have good anti-misalignment in the transverse and longitudinal directions, but the magnetic induction intensity in the center of the coils is weak, making it difficult for the receiving coil to effectively couple to the magnetic field energy. 2. Based on the double-D quadrature (DDQ) structure coil that can eliminate the mutual inductance between coupling coils and cross-coupling, Gong et al. (2022a) proposed a parameter optimized LCC-LC series-parallel hybrid topology circuit, which ensures that the output current fluctuation is controlled within 5% only when the system is misaligned within the 50% range along the X direction, achieving constant current output with anti-misalignment. The magnetic coupling structure’s finite element simulation model is established to analyze the change in magnetic induction intensity and the system’s anti-misalignment characteristics when the coil offsets along the x and y axes. Finally, an experimental prototype is developed to verify the constant voltage output performance and anti-misalignment performance of the system, and the proposed anti-misalignment system is compared with the systems in existing literature, highlighting the advantages of this design.

Findings

The experimental results show that the system can achieve a constant voltage output of 48V under a time-varying load, and the output voltage fluctuates within ±5% of the set value within the range of ±60 mm lateral misalignment and ±72 mm longitudinal misalignment.

Originality/value

Based on the dual LCC-S WPT system, the mutual inductance between the same side coils is reduced by adding decoupling coils, and the anti-misalignment characteristics and output power of the system are improved in a certain range. It is aimed at improving the stability of the system output and transmission efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the vehicle-based sensor effect and pavement temperature on road condition assessment, as well as to compute a threshold value for the classification of pavement conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

Four sensors were placed on the vehicle’s control arms and one inside the vehicle to collect vibration acceleration data for analysis. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) tests were performed to diagnose the effect of the vehicle-based sensors’ placement in the field. To classify road conditions and identify pavement distress (point of interest), the probability distribution was applied based on the magnitude values of vibration data.

Findings

Results from ANOVA indicate that pavement sensing patterns from the sensors placed on the front control arms were statistically significant, and there is no difference between the sensors placed on the same side of the vehicle (e.g., left or right side). A reference threshold (i.e., 1.7 g) was computed from the distribution fitting method to classify road conditions and identify the road distress based on the magnitude values that combine all acceleration along three axes. In addition, the pavement temperature was found to be highly correlated with the sensing patterns, which is noteworthy for future projects.

Originality/value

The paper investigates the effect of pavement sensors’ placement in assessing road conditions, emphasizing the implications for future road condition assessment projects. A threshold value for classifying road conditions was proposed and applied in class assignments (I-17 highway projects).

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to identify both the location and severity of damage in complex framed buildings using limited noisy vibration measurements. The study aims to directly adopt incomplete measured mode shapes in structural damage identification and effectively reduce the influence of measurement errors on predictions of structural damage.

Design/methodology/approach

Damage indicators are properly chosen to reflect both the location and severity of damage in framed buildings at element level for braces and at critical point level for beams and columns. Basic equations for an iterative solution procedure are provided to be solved for the chosen damage indicators. The Tikhonov regularisation method incorporating the L‐curve criterion for determining the regularisation parameter is employed to produce stable and robust solutions for damage indicators.

Findings

The proposed method can correctly assess the quantification of structural damage at specific locations in complex framed buildings using only limited information on modal data measurements with errors, without requiring mode shape expansion techniques or model reduction processes.

Research limitations/implications

Further work may be needed to improve the accuracy of inverse predictions for very small structural damage from noisy measurements.

Practical implications

The paper includes implications for the development of reliable techniques for rapid and on‐line damage assessment and health monitoring of framed buildings.

Originality/value

The paper offers a practical approach and procedure for correctly detecting structural damage and assessing structural condition from limited noisy vibration measurements.

Abstract

In this paper, a computational analysis is presented for the comparison of wafer level chip scale package‐on‐build‐up PCB assemblies with various solders and microvia configurations. The printed circuit board of the assembly has one build‐up layer on one side. For comparison, the board with two build‐up layers on the same side is studied as well. Furthermore, two solder joint materials, namely, 62Sn–2Ag–36Pb and 96.5Sn–3.5Ag are studied for comparison. The assembly is simulated by a finite element model and the model is analyzed under thermal cyclic loading. A comprehensive stress analysis is performed and comparisons are made for assembly deformation, stress/strain ranges, and creep responses.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon of makeup effect using numerical simulation and model experiments on seven different natural smoke extraction patterns of tall space. Airflow distribution and heat accumulation phenomenon in different cases are compared. The natural smoke exhaust system for tall spaces has many advantages, including low cost, no power and low maintenance cost. It is more advantageous than the mechanical type of exhaust. However, the internal air distribution is complicated since the large span spatial character. Effective and correct verification method is very important for the analysis of flow fields in tall spaces.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used fire dynamics simulator (FDS) software to simulate the fire scene. The model experiments are conducted to determine if the numerical simulation results are reasonable. A single-mirror Schlieren system, including an 838 (H) × 736 mm (W) square concave mirror, as well as the focal length of 3,100 mm was adopted to record the dynamic flow of hot gas. Six smokeless candles were burned in a 1/12.5 model in experiments to record the distribution of inflow, accumulation and outflow of airflow in the space. In addition, the thermocouple lines were mounted in the model for temperature measurement.

Findings

The results of numerical simulation and model experiments have proved that makeup air has a significant effect on the effectiveness of a natural smoke vent system. Larger areas of smoke vents will produce more heat accumulation phenomenon. In this study, the air inlet and vent installed on the same side have a better heat removal effect. Moreover, Schlieren photography technique is proved to be an accurate measurement method to record the dynamic flow of hot air immediately, directly and accurately. The dynamic flow behavior of hot gas in the model has been visualized in this paper.

Originality/value

At present, there is no examination method other than checking the smoke vent area to validate the effectiveness of a natural smoke vent system in Taiwan, as well as no requirements regarding the makeup inlet. The effect of makeup air in generating the effective push-pull phenomenon of airflow has been analyzed. In addition, the post-combustion hot gas distributions were visualized by using Schlieren photography technology in the model space, compared with the FDS simulation result and thermocouple recorded temperature. A verification method in the model experiments is established to determine if the numerical simulation results are reasonable.
