Abstract

Purpose

Super-tall towers have surfaced as a pragmatic remedy to meet the escalating requisites for both residential and commercial areas and to stimulate economic growth in the Middle East. In this unique regional context, optimizing spatial usage stands as a paramount consideration in the architectural design of skyscrapers. Despite the proliferation of super-tall towers, there exists a conspicuous dearth of comprehensive research pertaining to space efficiency in Middle Eastern skyscrapers. This study endeavors to bridge this substantial gap in the literature.

Design/methodology/approach

The research methodology utilized in this paper adopts a case study approach to accumulate data regarding super-tall towers in the Middle East, with a specific focus on investigating space efficiency. A total of 27 super-tall tower cases from the Middle East were encompassed within the analytical framework.

Findings

Key findings can be succinctly summarized as follows: (1) average space efficiency was 75.5%, with values fluctuating between a minimum of 63% and a maximum of 84%; (2) average ratio of the core area to the gross floor area (GFA) registered 21.3%, encompassing a spectrum ranging from 11% to 36%; (3) predominantly, Middle Eastern skyscrapers exhibited a prismatic architectural form coupled with a central core typology. This architectural configuration mostly catered to residential and mixed-use functions; (4) the combination of concrete and outrigger frame systems was the most frequently utilized; (5) as the height of the tower increased, space efficiency tended to experience a gradual decline and (6) no significant discernible disparities were detected in the impact of diverse load-bearing systems and architectural forms on space efficiency.

Originality/value

Despite the proliferation of super-tall towers, there exists a conspicuous dearth of comprehensive research pertaining to space efficiency in Middle Eastern skyscrapers. This study endeavors to bridge this substantial gap in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon of makeup effect using numerical simulation and model experiments on seven different natural smoke extraction patterns of tall space. Airflow distribution and heat accumulation phenomenon in different cases are compared. The natural smoke exhaust system for tall spaces has many advantages, including low cost, no power and low maintenance cost. It is more advantageous than the mechanical type of exhaust. However, the internal air distribution is complicated since the large span spatial character. Effective and correct verification method is very important for the analysis of flow fields in tall spaces.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used fire dynamics simulator (FDS) software to simulate the fire scene. The model experiments are conducted to determine if the numerical simulation results are reasonable. A single-mirror Schlieren system, including an 838 (H) × 736 mm (W) square concave mirror, as well as the focal length of 3,100 mm was adopted to record the dynamic flow of hot gas. Six smokeless candles were burned in a 1/12.5 model in experiments to record the distribution of inflow, accumulation and outflow of airflow in the space. In addition, the thermocouple lines were mounted in the model for temperature measurement.

Findings

The results of numerical simulation and model experiments have proved that makeup air has a significant effect on the effectiveness of a natural smoke vent system. Larger areas of smoke vents will produce more heat accumulation phenomenon. In this study, the air inlet and vent installed on the same side have a better heat removal effect. Moreover, Schlieren photography technique is proved to be an accurate measurement method to record the dynamic flow of hot air immediately, directly and accurately. The dynamic flow behavior of hot gas in the model has been visualized in this paper.

Originality/value

At present, there is no examination method other than checking the smoke vent area to validate the effectiveness of a natural smoke vent system in Taiwan, as well as no requirements regarding the makeup inlet. The effect of makeup air in generating the effective push-pull phenomenon of airflow has been analyzed. In addition, the post-combustion hot gas distributions were visualized by using Schlieren photography technology in the model space, compared with the FDS simulation result and thermocouple recorded temperature. A verification method in the model experiments is established to determine if the numerical simulation results are reasonable.

Abstract

Purpose

Supertall towers (300 m+) offer a viable solution to the increasing demand for housing and commercial space caused by rapid urban growth, migration from rural to urban areas and economic expansion in Asia. In this particular context, the efficient utilization of space becomes a crucial factor in the design process for Asian skyscrapers as they seek to address the changing socioeconomic landscape. This study will provide valuable guidance, especially to architectural and structural designers in the pursuit of sustainable development for Asian skyscrapers by analyzing space efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology employed in this paper involved a case study approach to gather data on 75 Asian supertall towers in order to examine space efficiency.

Findings

Findings of the research can be summarized as follows: (1) the average space efficiency of these towers was 67.5%, ranging from a minimum of 55% to a maximum of 82%; (2) the average proportion of the core area to the gross floor area (GFA) was 29.5%, with values ranging from 14% to 38%; (3) the majority of Asian skyscrapers exhibited a tapered form and adopted a central core typology, which catered to mixed-use and office purposes; (4) the most frequently utilized structural system was a combination of composite and outriggered frames; (5) space efficiency tended to decrease as the height of the tower increased; and (6) there was no noteworthy difference in the impact of various load-bearing systems and building forms on space efficiency.

Originality/value

There is a noticeable lack of extensive research into space efficiency in supertall towers in Asia, which serves as a hub for skyscrapers. This study seeks to fill this substantial gap in the current scientific literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the variations in the neutral plane when a tall space with unsymmetrical openings is on fire. The neutral plane of the fire scene is an important index of a natural smoke exhaust system. The numerical simulation method and the Schlieren photography technique were used as analysis tools. The results of model experiments and numerical simulation were compared with each other to confirm the rationality of the conclusions. The results were to discuss the characteristics of various cases and showed that the neutral planes of the fire scene were not always horizontal.

Design/methodology/approach

The numerical simulation method and the Schlieren photography technique were used as analysis tools. The flow patterns of hot air in various cases were recorded using the flow visualization technique. In addition, the renowned simulation software, fire dynamics simulator (FDS), was used for case analysis. The Schlieren photography technique was used for 1/12.5 model experiments with six smokeless candles burned, and FDS was used for a numerical simulation. In terms of the case of unilateral vents, the exhaust efficiency was discussed when the exhaust vent and air inlet were located on the same side or different sides.

Findings

This study demonstrates that makeup air flowing in from the inlets and openings has a significant impact on the effectiveness of natural smoke exhaust systems. The results illustrated that the neutral planes were tilted in some cases. In some cases, the results showed that one side was the air inlet and the other side was the exhaust vent, even if the openings were at the same height in some cases. These phenomena have rarely been discovered or studied in the past. The exhaust efficiency was not always better when the vent was located in the rooftop.

Originality/value

This study analyzed the neutral plane of a fire scene using the common unsymmetrical opening spaces in the Taiwan region as an example. The phenomenon of non-horizontal neutral plane has rarely been studied in the past. The temperature of the discharged hot gas was low because of an efficient exhaust effect, which reduced the heat and smoke storage in the space. The results obtained by these two methods were consistent, and showed that the cases with the same opening area had different smoke extraction efficiencies, meaning the smoke extraction effect cannot be judged only by the opening areas.

Abstract

Purpose

Sketching is a creative skill that most architects develop over their long period of study and is considered an effective medium for communicating imaginative thinking and conceptual ideas in architecture. As a concept, mood is generally associated with imagining specific ambiance and spatial experience during the schematic phase of the architectural design process. While most architectural research on mood revolves around post-occupancy evaluation, colour effect and lighting comfort, few studies have been conducted to systematically investigate conceptual issues related to mood imagination. Besides, there has been little attempt to appreciate sketches as a reliable conceptual data source for architectural research.

Design/methodology/approach

To bridge this knowledge gap, this paper explores a semiological analysis of mood visualisation using architectural sketches. By framing the experiment within the architecture education context, the paper begins by discussing the relationship between sketching, mood and semiology in architecture. The discussion continues by highlighting methodological issues in the design of our experiment. The experiment comprised architecture students from undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Following the visual and textual data derived from the experiment, two semiological analyses, namely, mood sign analysis and mood signifier analysis, were conducted to understand their imaginative thinking.

Findings

The results revealed significant preferential differences between the students on the use of specific semiotic representation and design language to conceptualise their mood idea.

Originality/value

As a preliminary experiment, this study constitutes an early attempt to further explore potential research related to architectural sketches and the creative imagination that may be beneficial to designers, art psychologists, educators and researchers alike.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to quantify fitout churn in office buildings to more accurately evaluate the recurrent embodied energy in life cycle assessment studies.

Design/methodology/approach

Three research methods were used in the context of Central Business District (CBD) office buildings in Sydney. Method 1 involved leasing records from 528 office buildings; method 2, a leasing history from a selective sample of three prime grade office buildings; method 3, a targeted survey of 21 property professionals concerning fitout churn cycle estimates.

Findings

Prime buildings are the area of most interest to fitout churn because they represent a large proportion of total office floor area. The churn rate differs according to office tenancy type (as defined by small, medium and large leased areas). Large tenants occupy the majority of floor space. Lease duration as obtained from Method 1, offers a reasonable proxy for predicting fitout churn. Using this method coupled with weighted-average calculations, the data indicate a fitout churn rate of 8.2 years.

Research limitations/implications

Variability concerning the situational context of Sydney CBD office buildings restricts broad generalisability of the findings. However, the research method used in this study would enable broad-based comparison and the potential for verification.

Originality/value

The main contribution of the research is to improve the ability to accurately predict fitout churn cycles as previous work only involves limited case studies and arbitrary estimates, thus lacking a strong evidence based.

Abstract

With the trend of adaptive reuse of old buildings and the continuous development of the sports industry in China, transforming stadiums that are no longer suitable has become a pressing issue. Based on this, the basic problems of adaptive transformation of urban stadium were discussed, and the motivation and principles of stadium reconstruction were analyzed. From the sense of place context, the openness of the interface and the integrity and diversity of the environment space, the reconstruction of the exterior space of the stadium was planned. In the reconstruction of the interior space of the stadium, the use of the interior space of the stadium and the needs that should be satisfied were mainly planned. Taking Yubei stadium in Chongqing as an example, the analysis was carried out. The planning structure, functional requirements, transportation, environment, spatial integrity and diversity were studied, and the current development trend of the stadium was reflected from the planning of interior and exterior space of gymnasium. In conclusion, this study provides a theoretical basis for the adaptive transformation of the stadium, and it is of great significance.

Libraries must actively support humanities text files, but we must remember that to focus exclusively on texts tied to specific systems is to put ourselves in opposition to the needs of the researchers we intend to serve. A working model of the sort of system and resource provision that is appropriate is described. The system, one put in place at the University of Michigan, is the result of several years of discussions and investigation. While by no means the only model upon which to base such a service, it incorporates several features that are essential to the support of these materials: standardized, generalized data; the reliance on standards for the delivery of information; and remote use. Sidebars discuss ARTFL, a textual database; the Oxford Text Archive; InteLex; the Open Text Corporation; the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI); the machine‐readable version of the Oxford English Dictionary, 2d edition; and the Center for Electronic Texts in the Humanities.
