Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to study the dynamic characteristics of a helical geared rotor-bearing system with composite material rotating shafts.
Design/methodology/approach
A finite element model of a helical geared rotor-bearing system with composite material rotating shafts is developed, in which the rotating shafts of the system are composed of composite material and modeled as Timoshenko beam; a rigid mass is used to represent the gear and their gyroscopic effect is taken into account; bearings are modeled as linear spring-damper; and the equations of motion are obtained by applying Lagrange’s equation. Natural frequencies, mode description, lateral responses, axial responses, lamination angles, lamination numbers, gear mesh stiffness and bearing damping coefficients are investigated.
Findings
The desired mechanical properties could be constructed using different lamination numbers and fiber included angles by composite rotating shafts. The frequency of the lateral module decreases as the included angle of the fibers and the principal shaft of the composite material rotating shaft increase. Because of the gear mesh stiffness increase, the resonance frequency of the coupling module of the system decreases, the lateral module is not influenced and the steady-state response decreases. The amplitude of the steady-state lateral and axial responses gradually decreases as the bearing damping coefficient increases.
Practical implications
The model of a helical geared rotor-bearing system with composite material rotating shafts is established in this paper. The dynamic characteristics of a helical geared rotor-bearing system with composite rotating shafts are investigated. The numerical results of this study can be used as a reference for subsequent personnel research.
Originality/value
The dynamic characteristics of the geared rotor-bearing system had been reported in some literature. However, the dynamic analysis of a helical geared rotor-bearing system with composite material rotating shafts is still rarely investigated. This paper shows some novel results of lateral and axial response results obtained by different lamination angles and different lamination numbers. In the future, it makes valuable contributions for further development of dynamic analysis of a helical geared rotor-bearing system with composite material rotating shafts.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide a nondestructive monitoring method based on wireless sensor technology to measure the continuous circumferential film pressure on radial cross-section of water-lubricated bearing, in addition, to study the influence factors to wireless communication.
Design/methodology/approach
The unique shaft and wireless equipments are designed, the pressure sensors are installed in right shoulder of shaft, the wireless transmitter is installed at the end of shaft and the sensors are connected with wireless transmitter by data cable. By this way, the film pressure can be obtained via wireless communication. The film pressure of eight grooved water-lubricated rubber bearings with concave staves is measured, the performance evaluation of wireless equipments is conducted and the influence factors to wireless communication is analyzed by Doppler frequency shift theory.
Findings
The rupturing and nonuniform water film is observed, the grooves decrease the film pressure of rubber bearing which is in mixed lubricating state. The main influence factor to wireless communication is shaft speed which has greater effect on packet loss rate than that on bit error rate.
Practical implications
By studying the actual continuous water film pressure, the bearing properties can be studied in-depth, and this has significant meaning to the design and application of bearing. Moreover, the study on influence factors to wireless communication can be used for references to other wireless monitoring on rotating machinery.
Originality/value
The continuous water film pressure can be monitored by this method, the lubricating state of bearing working surface cannot be damaged and the signal attenuation can be avoided. Therefore, the measuring accuracy is promoted and the measuring process also becomes convenient and high efficiency.

Abstract
Purpose
Water-lubricated rubber bearing is one of the most appropriate bearings for underwater use. The most popular design used widely today is the straight fluted rubber bearing. The special configuration leads to partial hydrodynamic lubrication and low load capacity. A new bearing bush structure with two cavities which is favorable for constructing continuous hydrodynamic lubrication was designed and studied. The paper aims to discuss these issues.
Design/methodology/approach
A new bearing bush structure with two cavities which is favorable for constructing continuous hydrodynamic lubrication was designed. The apparatus for studying the tribological behaviors of the two types of water-lubricated rubber bearings has been devised and established in the paper. The experimental studies on the tribological properties of the rubber bearings have been conducted under different loads and velocities. The eccentricity ratio of the new structure rubber bearing with two cavities was measured in experiment and the load capacity was calculated by numerical simulation.
Findings
The experimental results show that the friction coefficient decreases with increasing velocity; the friction coefficient increases sharply with the rising temperature, the friction coefficient increases at first and then decreases with increasing load for fluted rubber bearings. The numerical results were in good agreement with the experimental results. The numerical results show that complete hydrodynamic lubrication can be formed in the new designed rubber bearing with two cavities. The experimental and numerical results all indicate that there is an appropriate bearing clearance which the friction coefficient is minimum and the load capacity is maximum.
Originality/value

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to bring down collective information about various issues encountered in modelling of rotor systems.
Design/methodology/approach
The most important and basic part of “rotor dynamics” is the study related to its different modelling techniques which further involves the analysis of shaft for understanding the system potential, competence and reliability. The issues addressed in this study are classified mainly into two parts: the initial part gives out a vast overview of significant problems as well as different techniques applied to encounter modelling of rotor systems, while the latter part of the study describes the post-processing problem that occurs while performing the dynamic analysis.
Findings
The review incorporates the most important research works that have already placed a benchmark right from the beginning as well as the recent works that are still being carried out to further produce better outcomes. The review concludes with the modal analysis of rotor shaft to show the importance of mathematical model through its dynamic behaviour.
Originality/value
A critical literature review on the modelling techniques of rotor shaft systems is provided from earliest to latest along with its real-time application in different research and industrial fields.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present a method for early crack detection in rotating shafts. A rotor-bearing system, consisting of an elastic rotor mounted on fluid film bearings, is used to detect the presence of the crack at a depth of around 5 percent of shaft radius. The fluid film bearings, the shaft and the crack introduce coupled bending vibrations both in the horizontal and vertical plane. Experimental time series of the rotor composite response under normal steady-state operation are uncoupled, to develop a signal processing procedure able to reveal the presence of the crack.
Design/methodology/approach
The variation of the coupling property that a crack (breathing or not) or a cut (always open) introduces into the system and the localization of the coupling in the time domain is a concept proposed as a means to detect transverse surface cracks in rotating shafts. This consideration is combined with the concept of external excitation for the development of an additional crack-sensitive response during system normal operation. Using an external excitation of an active magnetic bearing of specific duration, frequency and amplitude, the method uses this coupling variation during rotation.
Findings
The method is simple, quick and effective for early crack detection, being able to detect cracks as shallow as 5 percent of the shaft radius while the system is under normal operation, and can even be applied real-time. Experimental verification uses a simple elastic rotor with a cut mounted on fluid film bearings, with the cut producing similar coupling phenomena as an opened crack. Experimental results are encouraging.
Originality/value
The method used is simple, quick and effective for early crack detection, being able to detect cracks as shallow as 5 percent of the shaft radius while the system is under normal operation, and can even be applied real-time.

Abstract
The supercritical propulsion shaft equipped with a dry friction damper has been designed for a polish ultra light helicopter named IS‐2. Models of the shaft and the damper and some results of analysis of the shaft flexural vibrations are presented. As it turned out the shaft vibrations strongly depend on parameters of the damper (especially on the damper gap) and can be regular or chaotic. There are two main cases: the damper with a small gap and the damper with a big gap, when compared to shaft eccentricity.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of misalignment on the static and dynamics characteristics of bump-type foil bearings (BFBs). High-speed and high-temperature oil-free turbomachinery can be realized with the use of gas foil bearings (GFBs). GFBs have a flexible supporting structure; thus, they can tolerate a higher degree of misalignment compared with rolling element bearings.
Design/methodology/approach
A test rig for GFBs has been developed to measure the effects of misalignment on the structure characteristics of bump-type foil bearings. The link-spring model, which is the foil structure model presented previously by the authors, is used as a basis in the present study to predict the static and dynamic performances of the foil structure. In general, predictions of the dynamic characteristics exhibit good agreement with the measurements acquired from the dynamic load tests.
Findings
Results from the static tests show that GFBs develop high stiffness when the misalignment angle increases. Moreover, the dynamic characteristics of GFBs are identified by considering the test bearing supported by a non-rotating shaft as a one-degree-of-freedom system. The results indicate that the dynamic characteristics of GFBs strongly depend on excitation frequency and excitation amplitude because of the variation in the dynamic friction force within the foil structure. The structural stiffness and equivalent viscous damping increase with an increase in the misalignment angle.
Originality/value
The present study focuses on the misalignment of GFBs and investigates experimentally the effects of misalignment on the structure characteristics of GFBs.

Abstract
Purpose
The paper is devoted to presenting a systematic investigation on the mechanical model and nonlinear dynamic characteristics of spur gear system with and without input shaft crack.
Design/methodology/approach
Considering the backlash, load-distribution, time-varying meshing stiffness and sliding friction, the modelling of a 5DOF gear system is proposed. Likewise, stiffness and damping models under elastohydrodynamic lubrication are developed, and sliding friction between gear pair is also outlined. In particular, a cracked input shaft which affects the support stiffness is presented, and breathing crack in keyway is adopted. On this basis, the dynamic responses of a gear system with and without input shaft crack are examined using numerical method, and some classical response diagrams are given, illustrating the effect of the important parameters on the gear system.
Findings
Dynamic simulation demonstrates that there exist periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic motions in the gear system, and rational speed of the gear pair has noteworthy effects on vibration characteristic. Besides, comparison between healthy and cracked condition of input shaft indicates that occurring of crack convert periodic motion to quasi-periodic or chaotic motion.
Originality/value
The results give an understanding of the operating conditions under which undesirable dynamic behavior occurs, and provide some useful information to design and diagnose such gear system with crack fault.
