Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to study the dynamic characteristics of a helical geared rotor-bearing system with composite material rotating shafts.

Design/methodology/approach

A finite element model of a helical geared rotor-bearing system with composite material rotating shafts is developed, in which the rotating shafts of the system are composed of composite material and modeled as Timoshenko beam; a rigid mass is used to represent the gear and their gyroscopic effect is taken into account; bearings are modeled as linear spring-damper; and the equations of motion are obtained by applying Lagrange’s equation. Natural frequencies, mode description, lateral responses, axial responses, lamination angles, lamination numbers, gear mesh stiffness and bearing damping coefficients are investigated.

Findings

The desired mechanical properties could be constructed using different lamination numbers and fiber included angles by composite rotating shafts. The frequency of the lateral module decreases as the included angle of the fibers and the principal shaft of the composite material rotating shaft increase. Because of the gear mesh stiffness increase, the resonance frequency of the coupling module of the system decreases, the lateral module is not influenced and the steady-state response decreases. The amplitude of the steady-state lateral and axial responses gradually decreases as the bearing damping coefficient increases.

Practical implications

The model of a helical geared rotor-bearing system with composite material rotating shafts is established in this paper. The dynamic characteristics of a helical geared rotor-bearing system with composite rotating shafts are investigated. The numerical results of this study can be used as a reference for subsequent personnel research.

Originality/value

The dynamic characteristics of the geared rotor-bearing system had been reported in some literature. However, the dynamic analysis of a helical geared rotor-bearing system with composite material rotating shafts is still rarely investigated. This paper shows some novel results of lateral and axial response results obtained by different lamination angles and different lamination numbers. In the future, it makes valuable contributions for further development of dynamic analysis of a helical geared rotor-bearing system with composite material rotating shafts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find the impact of various design variables on the composite shaft, and also the effect of newly developed resin (NDR) on the strength of the fibers of the composite shaft.

Design/methodology/approach

The Taguchi method is used to optimize the design variables. Also, GRG approach is used to validate the result.

Findings

NDR improves the bonding strength of fiber than the epoxy resin. With the grey relational analysis (GRA) method, the initial setting (A1B4C4D1) was having grey relational grade 0.957. It was enhanced by using a new optimum combination (A2B2C4D2) to 0.965. It indicates that there is an enhancement in the grade by 0.829 percent. Thus, using the GRA approach of analysis, design variables have been successfully optimized to achieve improved dynamic properties of hybrid composite shaft.

Originality/value

The findings of this research are helping to optimize the design variables for the composite shaft. Also, the NDR gives the good bonding strength of carbon/glass fibers in dynamic loading condition than the epoxy resin.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a method for early crack detection in rotating shafts. A rotor-bearing system, consisting of an elastic rotor mounted on fluid film bearings, is used to detect the presence of the crack at a depth of around 5 percent of shaft radius. The fluid film bearings, the shaft and the crack introduce coupled bending vibrations both in the horizontal and vertical plane. Experimental time series of the rotor composite response under normal steady-state operation are uncoupled, to develop a signal processing procedure able to reveal the presence of the crack.

Design/methodology/approach

The variation of the coupling property that a crack (breathing or not) or a cut (always open) introduces into the system and the localization of the coupling in the time domain is a concept proposed as a means to detect transverse surface cracks in rotating shafts. This consideration is combined with the concept of external excitation for the development of an additional crack-sensitive response during system normal operation. Using an external excitation of an active magnetic bearing of specific duration, frequency and amplitude, the method uses this coupling variation during rotation.

Findings

The method is simple, quick and effective for early crack detection, being able to detect cracks as shallow as 5 percent of the shaft radius while the system is under normal operation, and can even be applied real-time. Experimental verification uses a simple elastic rotor with a cut mounted on fluid film bearings, with the cut producing similar coupling phenomena as an opened crack. Experimental results are encouraging.

Originality/value

The method used is simple, quick and effective for early crack detection, being able to detect cracks as shallow as 5 percent of the shaft radius while the system is under normal operation, and can even be applied real-time.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of imposing linear and quadratic composition gradients on the steady state creep behavior of a rotating functionally graded Al‐SiCP disc operating under a radial thermal gradient.

Design/methodology/approach

Mathematical model to describe steady state creep behavior in rotating discs made of isotropic aluminum composite containing linear and quadratic distributions of Silicon Carbide (SiCP) in the radial direction has been formulated. The discs are assumed to operate under a radial thermal gradient originating due to braking action as estimated by FEM analysis. The steady state creep behavior of the discs under stresses developing due to rotation has been determined following Sherby's law. Based on the developed model, the distributions of stresses and strain rates have been obtained and compared for various functionally graded material (FGM) discs containing the same average amount (20 vol per cent) of dispersoid. The creep response of a composite disc with uniform SiCP content of 20 vol per cent and operating under a radial thermal gradient has also been computed for comparison with the results obtained for FGM discs.

Findings

The study reveals that the distribution of stresses and strain rates in a rotating composite disc operating under a radial thermal gradient are significantly affected by different particle distributions with in the disc. The creep stresses and steady state creep rates in a rotating FGM disc can be significantly reduced by employing more SiCP particles in the middle compared to the inner and the outer radii.

Originality/value

The study provides an understanding of the required tailoring of composition in order to control creep stresses and creep rates in a rotating FGM disc operating under a radial thermal gradient.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is mainly to highlight how a simplified and streamlined approach to the condition monitoring (CM) of industrial rotating machines through the application of frequency domain data combination can effectively enhance the eMaintenance framework.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper commences by providing an overview to the relevance of maintenance excellence within manufacturing industries, with particular emphasis on the roles that rotating machines CM of rotating machines plays. It then proceeds to provide details of the eMaintenance as well as its possible alignment with the introduced concept of effective vibration-based condition monitoring (eVCM) of rotating machines. The subsequent sections of the paper respectively deal with explanations of data combination approaches, experimental setups used to generate vibration data and the theory of eVCM.

Findings

This paper investigates how a simplified vibration-based rotating machinery faults classification method based on frequency domain data combination can increase the feasibility and practicality of eMaintenance.

Research limitations/implications

The eVCM approach is based on classifying data acquired under several experimentally simulated conditions on two different machines using combined higher order signal processing parameters so as to reduce CM data requirements. Although the current study was solely based on the application of vibration data acquired from rotating machines, the knowledge exchange platform that currently dominates present day scientific research makes it very likely that the lessons learned from the development of eVCM concept can be easily transferred to other scientific domains that involve continuous CM such as medicine.

Practical implications

The concept of eMaintenance as a cost-effective and smart means of increasing the autonomy of maintenance activities within industries is rapidly growing in maintenance-related literatures. As viable as the concept appears, the achievement of its optimum objectives and full deployment to the industry is still subjective due to the complexity and data intensiveness of conventional CM practices. In this paper, an eVCM approach is proposed so that rotating machine faults can be effectively detected and classified without the need for repetitive analysis of measured data.

Social implications

The main strength of eVCM lies in the fact that it permits the sharing of historical vibration data between identical rotating machines irrespective of their foundation structures and speed differences. Since eMaintenance is concerned with driving maintenance excellence, eVCM can potentially contribute towards its optimisation as it cost-effectively streamlines faults diagnosis. This therefore implies that the simplification of vibration-based CM of rotating machines positively impacts the society with regard to the possibility of reducing how much time is actually spent on the accurate detection and classification of faults.

Originality/value

Although the currently existing body of literature already contains studies that have attempted to show how the combination of measured vibration data from several industrial machines can be used to establish a universal vibration-based faults diagnosis benchmark for incorporation into eMaintenance framework, these studies are limited in the scope of faults, severity and rotational speeds considered. In the current study, the concept of multi-faults, multi-sensor, multi-speed and multi-rotating machine data combination approach using frequency domain data fusion and principal components analysis is presented so that faults diagnosis features for identical rotating machines with different foundations can be shared between industrial plants. Hence, the value of the current study particularly lies in the fact that it significantly highlights a new dimension through which the practical implementation and operation of eMaintenance can be realized using big data management and data combination approaches.

Abstract

Purpose

At present, one of the key equipment in pillar industries is a large rotating machinery. Conducting regular health monitoring is important for ensuring safe operation of the large rotating machinery. Because vibrations sensors play an important role in the workings of the rotating machinery, measuring its vibration signal is an important task in health monitoring. This paper aims to present these.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, the contact vibration sensor and the non-contact vibration sensor have been discussed. These sensors consist of two types: the electric vibration sensor and the optical fiber vibration sensor. Their applications in the large rotating machinery for the purpose of health monitoring are summarized, and their advantages and disadvantages are also presented.

Findings

Compared with the electric vibration sensor, the optical fiber vibration sensor of large rotating machinery has unique advantages in health monitoring, such as provision of immunity against electromagnetic interference, requirement of less insulation and provision of long-distance signal transmission.

Originality/value

Both contact vibration sensor and non-contact vibration sensor have been discussed. Among them, the electric vibration sensor and the optical fiber vibration sensor are compared. Future research direction of the vibration sensors is presented.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the frictional behaviour of composite materials under external horizontal vibration. Variation of friction coefficient is investigated experimentally when mild steel pin slides on composite materials such as glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) and cloth reinforced ebonite (commercially known as gear fiber).

Design/methodology/approach

A pin‐on‐disc apparatus having the facility of vibrating the test samples in a horizontal direction is designed and fabricated. Horizontal vibration is created along (longitudinal direction), and perpendicular (transverse direction) to, the sliding direction. The experimental set‐up has the facility to vary the amplitudes and frequencies of vibration while velocity of vibration is kept constant.

Findings

The relative frictional behaviour of these materials and their dimensional analysis are yet to be investigated. Therefore an attempt is made to investigate the relative frictional property of the GFRP and cloth reinforced ebonite (commercially known as gear fiber) and the results of these composite materials are analyzed by dimensional analysis under horizontal vibration.

Practical implications

It is expected that the applications of these results will contribute to the improvement of different concerned mechanical systems.

Originality/value

It can also be noted that there are no clear correlations between friction‐ and other vibration‐related operating parameters. Considering the above conclusion and lack of correlation, the paper meant to find out a suitable correlation and a way of observing the response of friction force by applying known frequency and amplitude of vibration in a particular direction. It is expected that the application of these results will contribute to the improvement of different concerned mechanical systems.
