Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to address two questions related to the magnetism or drawing power of suburban malls: first, does physical size matter, and second, what is the externalities effect of housing a Cineplex within a shopping center?

Design/methodology/approach

The study was carried out through an extensive survey covering 1,283 shoppers in nine selected suburban shopping centers in Singapore. The effects of physical size and the presence of Cineplex on the magnetism on the selected suburban shopping centers are evaluated using analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests. Their effect on shopping duration and expenditure pattern is also empirically tested using a recursive simultaneous equations model.

Findings

The survey results affirm that both physical size and the presence of a Cineplex enhance the magnetism of suburban shopping centers. A larger shopping center can facilitate a greater variety of shops and create a more pleasant environment for the shoppers, thus enticing shoppers to visit and stay longer. Cinema patrons prefer to watch movies at Cineplex located in shopping centers. Controlling for the endogenous relationship between duration of visit and amount spent in the shopping center, the regression results show that, while physical size and Cineplex have a positive effect on the duration of visit, they do not necessarily have a direct effect on the amount spent by the patrons in the shopping center.

Originality/value

One of the main challenges for mall owners and managers located outside the traditional shopping belt is how to attract shoppers to patronize their malls. While the impact of shopping center size on retail rents and center attractiveness has been addressed in the literature, this paper adds some new insights into the field. The focus on whether the presence of a cinema complex within a shopping center affects its magnetism or not is novel.

Abstract

Purpose

The mathematical complexity of the BJ(x) Brillouin function makes it unsuitable for most calculations and its application difficult for computer programming in magnetism. Here, its approximation with the tanh function is proposed to ease the mathematical operations for most cases. The approximation works with good accuracy, acceptable in practical calculations. This approximation has already formed the foundation of the “hyperbolic model” in magnetism for the study of hysteretic phenomena. The reversal of the Brillouin function is an important but difficult mathematical problem for practical purposes. Here, a proposal has been put forward for an easy approximation using an analytical expression. This provides a good workable solution for the BJ(x)−1 function dependent on J, the angular momentum quantum number of the material used. The proposed approximation is applicable within the working range of practical applications. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The multi-variant Brillouin function is closely approximated by the tanh function to ease calculations. Its mathematically unsolved reversed function is approximated by a simple analytical expression with a good working accuracy.

Findings

The Brillouin function and its reversal can be approximated for practical users mostly for professionals working in Magnetism.

Research limitations/implications

Most if not all practical problems in Magnetism can be solved within the limitations of the two approximations.

Practical implications

Both proposed functions can ease the mathematical problems faced by researchers and other users in Magnetism.

Social implications

Ease the frustration of most users working in the field of Magnetism.

Originality/value

The application of the tanh function for replacing the Brillouin function led to the creation of the hyperbolic model of hysteresis. To the author's knowledge, the reverse function was mathematically only solved in 2015 with a vastly complicated mathematics, and is hardly suitable for practical calculations in Magnetism. The proposed simple expression can be very useful for theorists and experimental scientists.

Abstract

The important series of mechanical charging systems known generally as Indicators, have never been fully described, either from the historical or structural standpoint. Papers describing one or other of the individual varieties have been published from time to time during the period of thirty‐six years they have been in use, but except the partial notices of a select few published by Mr. F. J. Burgoyne and myself, nothing of a comprehensive or accurate nature has ever appeared. Before proceeding to describe each separate invention in its order, it may be well to enquire briefly into the reasons for the origin of a device which has called forth not a little ingenuity and inventive talent. When libraries were first established under the provisions of the various Acts of Parliament, two things happened as a matter of course in every district: a building, suitable or otherwise, was provided; and, the readers in a town increased in number to an enormous and unprecedented extent. Straitened means generally led to the provision of a cramped and inconvenient building, in which the space set apart for books was often ridiculously inadequate; with the result that lofty shelves were the rule, which secured economy of storage at the expense of rapidity of service. Previous experience in mechanics' institutes, or similar libraries, was found by the new librarian a useless criterion for public library needs, and especially as a guide to the multitude of readers and the variety of their demands. Delays in service occurred continually and the poor librarian was often abashed or offended at the freely expressed scepticism with which the public received his reports of books being out. From these factors was evolved the idea of the indicator, which by and by took practical shape as a machine for saving the legs of the librarian and his assistants from frequent and fruitless climbs to high shelves, and enabling readers to satisfy themselves that books were actually in use. The original indicators were intended only for showing, by means of numbers, the novels which were out or in, but since then a considerable number of libraries have applied them to all classes.

Abstract

Purpose

Metal-cooled reactors generally use molten metals such as sodium, potassium or a combination of sodium and potassium because of their excellent heat transfer properties so that the reactor can operate at much lower pressures and higher temperatures. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stability of natural convection in an inclined ring filled with molten potassium under the influence of a radial magnetism.

Design/methodology/approach

A numerical simulation of electrically conductive fluid natural convection stability is performed on an inclined cylindrical annulus under the influence of a radial magnetism. The upper and lower walls are adiabatic, while the internal and external cylinders are kept at even temperatures. The equations governing this fluid system are solved numerically using finite volume method. The SIMPLER algorithm is used for pressure-speed coupling in the momentum equation.

Findings

Numerical results for various effective parameters that solve the problem in the initial oscillatory state are discussed in terms of isobars, isotherms and flow lines in the annulus for a wide range of Hartmann numbers (0 ≤ Ha ≤ 80), inclination angles (0 ≤ γ ≤ 90°) and radii ratios λ ≤ 6. The dependency stability diagrams between complicated situations with the critical value of the Rayleigh number RaCr and the corresponding frequency FrCr are established on the basis of the numeric data of this investigation. The angle of inclination and the radii ratio of the annulus have a significant effect on the stabilization of the magneto-convective flux and show that the best stabilization of the natural oscillatory convection is obtained by the intensity of the strongest magnetic field, the high radii ratio and inclination of the annulus at γ = 30°.

Practical implications

This numerical model is selected for its various applications in technology and industry.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the influence of the inclination of the cylindrical annulus (ring), with various radii ratio, on natural oscillatory convection under a radial magnetism has never been investigated.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this chapter is to argue that charisma is a collective representation, and that charismatic authority is a social status that derives more from the “recognition” of the followers than from the “magnetism” of the leaders. I contend further that a close reading of Max Weber shows that he, too, saw charisma in this light.

Approach

I develop my argument by a close reading of many of the most relevant texts on the subject. This includes not only the renowned texts on this subject by Max Weber, but also many books and articles that interpret or criticize Weber’s views.

Findings

I pay exceptionally close attention to key arguments and texts, several of which have been overlooked in the past.

Implications

Writers for whom charisma is personal magnetism tend to assume that charismatic rule is natural and that the full realization of democratic norms is unlikely. Authority, in this view, emanates from rulers unbound by popular constraint. I argue that, in fact, authority draws both its mandate and its energy from the public, and that rulers depend on the loyalty of their subjects, which is never assured. So charismatic claimants are dependent on popular choice, not vice versa.

Originality

I advocate a “culturalist” interpretation of Weber, which runs counter to the dominant “personalist” account. Conventional interpreters, under the sway of theology or mass psychology, misread Weber as a romantic, for whom charisma is primal and undemocratic rule is destiny. This essay offers a counter-reading.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper presents the analysis of magnetic field that surrounds the power transformer after it has been switched off. The purpose of this paper is to determine the possibility of defining the residual fluxes in the legs of the transformer based on the measurement of this field. It was also intended to determine the type and the location of magnetic sensors.

Design/methodology/approach

Numerical analysis of the magnetic field was performed. A three-dimensional model of the transformer’s magnetic core was created in the Flux 3D simulation program. The analysis was concerned with an oil-filled transformer and a dry transformer. The magnetic field of Earth was taken into account.

Findings

The research has shown that magnetic induction of the leakage field produced by residual magnetization of the core is comparable to the magnetic induction of the Earth’s field. It was also found that the measurement of the magnetic induction should be performed as close as possible to the core. The interior of the tank turned out to be a convenient space for the placement of the sensors.

Research limitations/implications

The influence of external ferromagnetic objects, and devices generating magnetic field, on the measurement was not considered. It should be taken into account in the future work.

Originality/value

On the basis of the analysis, it was proposed to measure the magnetic induction vector of the leakage field at three points. The sensors should be placed in front of the columns at a position that is half of their height. The measurement can be performed with satisfactory accuracy by sensors located on the surface of the windings.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present an analytical way of formulating the vital parameters of an equivalent hysteresis loop of a composite, multi-component magnetic substance. By using the hyperbolic model, the only model, which separates the constituent parts of the composite magnetic materials, an equivalent loop can be composed analytically. So far, it was only possible to superimpose the tanh functions by numerical method. With this transformation, all multi-component composite substances can be treated mathematically as a single-phase material, as in the T(x) model, and include it in mathematical operations. The transformation works with good accuracy for major and minor loops and provides an easy analytical way to arrive to the vital parameters. This also shows an analytical way to the easy solution of some of the difficult problems in magnetism for multi-component ferrous materials, such as Fourier and Laplace transforms, accommodation and energy loss, already solved for the T(x) model.

Design/methodology/approach

The mathematical single loop formulation of hysteresis loop of a multi-phase substance shows the way in good approximation of the sum of constituent loops, described by tanh functions. That was so far only possible by numerical methods. By doing so, it becomes equivalent to the T(x) model for mathematical operations.

Findings

The described method gives an analytical formulation [identical to the T(x) model] of multi-component hysteresis loops described by hyperbolic model, leading to simple solution of difficult problems in magnetism such as loop reversal.

Research limitations/implications

Although the method is an approximation, its accuracy is good enough for use in magnetic research and practical applications in industries engaged in application of magnetic materials.

Practical implications

The hyperbolic model is the only one which separates the magnetic substance, used in practice, to constituent components by describing its multi-component state. Superimposing the components was only possible so far by numerical means. The transformation shown is an analytical approximation applicable in mathematical calculations. The transformation described here enables the user to apply all rules applicable to the T(x) model.

Social implications

This study equally helps researchers and practical users of the hyperbolic model.

Originality/value

This novel analytical approach to the problem provides an acceptable mathematical solution for practical problems in research and manufacturing. It shows a way to solutions of many difficult problems in magnetism.

Abstract

Purpose

Proposing a new type of water-lubricated thrust bearing meets the load-bearing requirements of high-power shaft-less rim driven thrusters.

Design/methodology/approach

The designs were tested by establishing a bearing thermal-fluid-magnetic comprehensive simulation model and developing bearing fluid film force and magnetic simulation. Lubrication performance tests were carried out on the bearing test rig.

Findings

The Halbach array of magnet blocks is able to reach the maximum magnetic force. The material of sheath can help increase the magnetism. The magnetism is able to reduce wear during low-speed and the start-stop phase, while the eddy current loss at high speeds will lead to a decrease in magnetic force. The experiment found that the bearing was more stable at low speeds and would not demagnetize due to the temperature rise, but it is necessary to pay attention to the running stability at high speeds to prevent rubbing and impact.

Originality/value

An innovative combination of hydrodynamic pressure and permanent magnetic repulsion was observed to form a magnetic-liquid double suspension bearing with large bearing capacity.
