Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the underlying emotional process that explains how context-specific stimuli involved in virtual reality (VR) destinations translate into presence perceptions and behavioral intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 403 potential tourists participated in a self-administered online survey after they watched a randomly assigned VR tour. The Lavaan package in R software was used to conduct structural equation analysis and examine the proposed theoretical framework.

Findings

The results reveal that media content consisting of informativeness, aesthetics and novelty was positively related to users’ sense of presence in a VR tour. The effect of media content on presence was partially mediated by emotional arousal.

Practical implications

Managers and VR designers can create an emotive virtual tour that contributes to the user’s sense of presence to promote attraction to the target destination. The VR content needs to be informative, aesthetic and novel, which can excite users during the VR tour, portray virtual destinations clearly and eventually influence potential tourists’ visit intentions.

Originality/value

Research on the emotional mechanism to generate presence is still in its infancy. This study integrates presence theory into a conceptual framework to explore how media content influences presence and decision-making through the emotional mechanism.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the direct and indirect relationships among the informal economy, innovation, entrepreneurial and initial public offering (IPO) activity.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses an unbalanced sample of 30 countries over a 15-year period: 2000–2014. The proposed random-effects model is estimated using feasible generalized least squares with robust estimators of variance.

Findings

Entrepreneurial activity is positively related to IPO activity. The informal economy negatively moderates the relationships among entrepreneurship, innovation and IPOs.

Practical implications

IPOs are a stage in the entrepreneurial process susceptible of being influenced by country level factors. An appropriate understanding of these factors can contribute to discuss policies that improve the level of IPO activity.

Originality/value

The authors explore the understudied relationship of the informal economy and entrepreneurship. Although entrepreneurial activity can be higher in contexts with more informality, this relationship can turn sour in later stages since it lowers the probability of higher IPO activity by inhibiting formal entrepreneurship and innovation. Hence, the main contribution is to provide evidence of this “hangover” effect.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to investigate the relationship between certain key attributes of the board of directors as their international experience, tenure, age, independence and size and internationalization strategies of firms in an emerging economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses random effects panel Tobit regression on a data set of 418 Indian companies spanning over a time frame of nine years from fiscal year (F.Y.) 2009–2010 to F.Y. 2017–2018.

Findings

Board members substantially associate with internationalization choices of emerging economy firms. Specifically, board members with extensive international experience, shorter tenure, higher age, greater independence and larger board size are associated with high level of internationalization in these firms.

Research limitations/implications

The study advocates that Indian companies should focus on recruiting board members with international experience, periodically refreshing their boards, valuing wisdom and experience, adhering to regulatory requirements of independent directors and increase the number of board members to expand internationally. By following this, Indian companies can successfully expand into international markets.

Originality/value

The study’s originality lies in its focus on the role of board members in the internationalization strategy of emerging economy firms, which remains an under-researched area.

Abstract

Purpose

Hotel servicescapes have been extensively examined in the literature; however, there has been less attention on green servicescapes that attract consumers to visit green hotels. This model explores the relationship among green servicescapes – green items, green surfaces, natural environment, green consumerism and their outcomes, including intentions to return and green evangelism with a moderating role of green perceived quality.

Design/methodology/approach

The multi-wave method was utilized to gather data from China's major cities, Beijing and Shanghai. A total of 462 responses were received over three waves. Subsequently, the data were analyzed employing structural equation modeling (SEM) in Smart PLS 4.

Findings

The findings indicated that green servicescape – green items, green surfaces and natural environment – have a positive impact on green consumerism. The authors have discovered that green consumerism leads to positive intentions among consumers to return and engage in green evangelism. Green perceived quality significantly moderated the relationship between green servicescape and green consumerism.

Research limitations/implications

The study offers insightful contributions to academia and managerial fields, encompassing consumer psychology, consumer behaviour, the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) framework and servicescapes. Additionally, it assists hotel managers in addressing challenges stemming from the competitive environment and creating a more environmentally friendly atmosphere.

Originality/value

The research focused on the innovative reflective model of green consumerism model and adopted a pioneering approach to examine green servicescapes within the hotel industry. This study enhances understanding of consumer intentions to return and the influence of green consumerism on green evangelism, while also quantifying the significance of green perceived quality.

Abstract

Purpose

Employee’s innovative behavior as a team allows the organization to achieve its goals; however, team green creativity requires transformational and entrepreneurial leader support. Therefore, the study explores the impact of green transformational and entrepreneurial leadership on team innovative behavior and green new product development with the mediating role of team green creativity.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted to collect data from 455 employees working in the hospitality industry via a self-administered questionnaire, and hypotheses were analyzed using the partial least squares structural equation modeling PLS-SEM technique using Smart-PLS 4.0.

Findings

The results indicate that green transformational and entrepreneurial leadership styles positively and significantly affect team innovative behavior and new green product development performance. Furthermore, findings show that team green creativity partially mediates the relationship between green transformational and entrepreneurial leadership on team innovative behavior, and new green product development performance.

Research limitations/implications

The results of this study provide insights to hospitality professionals pursuing the improvement of team innovative behavior and new green product development performance through team green creativity and leadership styles.

Practical implications

This study is useful for organizations that target new green product development performance and establish higher green innovative behavior cohesively among its team members through these robust leadership styles.

Originality/value

This study is the first attempt to provide a valuable contribution to the growing field of green leadership styles on team innovative behavior and new green product development performance through team green creativity.

Abstract

Purpose

Building on resource dependence theory and contingency theory (CT) and focusing on an emerging market setting, this study investigates how demographic board diversity (BD) influences the export intensity (EI) of firms listed on Borsa Istanbul (BIST), with the moderating effect of firm size, as a contingency factor, on this interaction.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of 65 exporting firms listed on the BIST Industrials Index, this study explores how demographic attributes of board members, represented by the board diversity index (BDI), affects EI by employing panel data analysis over the period of 2016–2020.

Findings

The results suggest that there is a negative relationship between BD and EI, but firm size has a positive moderating effect on the association of BD and EI, indicating that large firms with diverse boards are more prone to access foreign markets and make export. The findings further indicate that board size and CEO duality have a negative and significant effect on EI, while marketing intensity has a positive and significant impact.

Research limitations/implications

The sample covers only public companies listed on the BIST Industrials Index, and the impact of board characteristics on the EI is analyzed for a limited time frame, i.e. from 2016 to 2020.

Practical implications

The findings help business executives better understand the contribution of the firm size on the interaction of BD and EI and offers valuable insights to companies to gain a competitive edge in international markets.

Originality/value

The study provides evidence on the effects of board attributes on the EI from the perspective of emerging countries. It also helps to gain a deeper understanding of how board dynamics contribute to the internationalization of companies.

This study aims to explore the relationship between foreignness and CEO pay.

Design/methodology/approach

This study combines cross-sectional and time series observations analyzed with panel data methodology in a sample of 59 firms listed in the Spanish IBEX-35 index between 2006 and 2020.

Findings

International ownership influences CEO underpayment and foreign sales influence CEO overpayment.

Practical implications

CEO pay is susceptible to being influenced by foreign non-American variables. An appropriate understanding of these factors can contribute to discussing policies that balance the level of CEO payment in large public firms.

Originality/value

Research on internationalization and CEO pay is scarce. A handful of studies confirm the link between Americanization and executive compensation in Europe. However, the authors still do not know if the level of CEO pay is influenced by non-American exposure. To do this, the authors test the effect of firm – ownership, sales, board – and individual – CEO – exposure to international, non-US environments on the level of over/underpayment of CEOs in a sample of Spanish firms.

Combinamos observaciones transversales y de series temporales analizadas con metodología de datos de panel en una muestra de 59 empresas del índice IBEX-35 español entre 2006 y 2020.

Resultados

La propiedad internacional influye en la remuneración insuficiente de los CEO y las ventas en el extranjero influyen en la remuneración excesiva de los CEO.

Originalidad:

La investigación sobre la internacionalización y la remuneración de los CEO es escasa. Un puñado de estudios confirman el vínculo entre la americanización y la remuneración de los ejecutivos en Europa. Sin embargo, todavía no sabemos si el nivel de remuneración de los CEO está influenciado por la exposición no estadounidense. Para ello, probamos el efecto de la exposición de la empresa (propiedad, ventas, consejo) y del individuo (CEO) a entornos internacionales, no estadounidenses, sobre el nivel de sobre/insuficiente remuneración de los CEO en una muestra de empresas españolas.

Implicaciones prácticas

La remuneración de los CEO es susceptible de verse influenciada por variables extranjeras no estadounidenses. Una comprensión adecuada de estos factores puede contribuir a discutir políticas que equilibren el nivel de remuneración de los CEO en las grandes empresas públicas.

Pesquisas sobre internacionalização e remuneração de CEO são escassas. Alguns estudos confirmam a ligação entre americanização e remuneração de executivos na Europa. No entanto, ainda não sabemos se o nível de remuneração de CEO é influenciado pela exposição não americana. Para fazer isso, testamos o efeito da exposição da empresa - propriedade, vendas, conselho - e individual - CEO - a ambientes internacionais, não americanos, no nível de super/sub pagamento de CEOs em uma amostra de empresas espanholas.

Implicações práticas

A remuneração de CEO é suscetível a ser influenciada por variáveis estrangeiras não americanas. Uma compreensão adequada desses fatores pode contribuir para discutir políticas que equilibram o nível de remuneração de CEO em grandes empresas públicas.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper was to analyze the role of the Cooperative of Farmers and Fishermen of the Lago do Cuniã Extractive Reserve (COOPCUNIÃ) in the inclusion of residents in the caiman meat value chain in Porto Velho, Brazil.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of six interviews were conducted with key actors to investigate the research problem in the Lago do Cuniã EXRES, namely the president and project advisor of the cooperative, two extractivist members of the cooperative and two non-member residents. The key actors were selected based on the following criteria: being over 18 years old, residing within the reserve and having participated in some stage of the caiman meat value chain.

Findings

The results demonstrate that the cooperative contributes to the inclusion of extractivist residents in the value chain, income generation and poverty reduction, enabling the production and marketing of caiman meat. Additionally, it overcomes challenges and improves the quality of life of the local population.

Practical implications

This study emphasizes the social and economic benefits for isolated regions with low productive development. For public policymakers, the results demonstrate that inclusion has enabled access to technology and markets. For the cooperative, it showcases actions oriented towards development, social inclusion and quality of life.

Originality/value

The originality of the article lies in the analysis of the role of a value chain within an environmental protection area in the Amazon, balancing economic, social and environmental factors.

Propósito

O objetivo foi analisar o papel da Cooperativa dos Agricultores e Pescadores da Reserva Extrativista Lago do Cuniã (COOPCUNIÃ) na inclusão dos moradores na cadeia de valor da carne de jacaré em Porto Velho, Brasil.

Desenho/metodologia/abordagem

Foram realizadas 06 (seis) entrevistas com atores-chave para investigar o problema de pesquisa na RESEX Lago do Cuniã, a saber: o presidente e o assessor de projetos da cooperativa, dois extrativistas cooperados e dois moradores não cooperados. Os atores-chave foram selecionados com base nos seguintes critérios: ser maior de 18 anos, residir na reserva e ter participado de alguma etapa da cadeia de valor da carne de jacaré.

Descobertas

Os resultados demonstram que a cooperativa contribui para a inclusão dos extrativistas na cadeia de valor, com a geração de renda e redução da pobreza, viabilizando a produção e comercialização da carne de jacaré. Além disso, supera desafios e melhora a qualidade de vida da população local.

Implicações práticas

Este estudo enfatiza os benefícios sociais e econômicos para regiões isoladas e com baixo desenvolvimento produtivo. Para os formuladores de políticas públicas, os resultados demonstram que a inclusão possibilitou o acesso à tecnologia e aos mercados. Para a cooperativa, mostra ações voltadas para o desenvolvimento, inclusão social e qualidade de vida.

Originalidade/valor

A originalidade do artigo está na análise do papel de uma cadeia de valor dentro de uma área de proteção ambiental na Amazônia, equilibrando fatores econômicos, sociais e ambientais.

Purpose

Simulation-based digital twins represent an effort to provide high-accuracy real-time insights into operational physical processes. However, the computation time of many multi-physical simulation models is far from real-time. It might even exceed sensible time frames to produce sufficient data for training data-driven reduced-order models. This study presents TwinLab, a framework for data-efficient, yet accurate training of neural-ODE type reduced-order models with only two data sets.

Design/methodology/approach

Correlations between test errors of reduced-order models and distinct features of corresponding training data are investigated. Having found the single best data sets for training, a second data set is sought with the help of similarity and error measures to enrich the training process effectively.

Findings

Adding a suitable second training data set in the training process reduces the test error by up to 49% compared to the best base reduced-order model trained only with one data set. Such a second training data set should at least yield a good reduced-order model on its own and exhibit higher levels of dissimilarity to the base training data set regarding the respective excitation signal. Moreover, the base reduced-order model should have elevated test errors on the second data set. The relative error of the time series ranges from 0.18% to 0.49%. Prediction speed-ups of up to a factor of 36,000 are observed.

Originality/value

The proposed computational framework facilitates the automated, data-efficient extraction of non-intrusive reduced-order models for digital twins from existing simulation models, independent of the simulation software.

Abstract

Purpose

Reliability study plays a significant role in supporting the operation of any machinery working in a dynamic and harsh environment. This quality is inherently uncertain and a stochastic variable of any system. This study will be beneficial for designing an appropriate maintenance schedule, reducing unplanned production downtime and reducing maintenance cost of electrical motor operated particularly in dynamic and harsh environmental industries.

Design/methodology/approach

This study focused on the effects of operating conditions (OCs) on the operational reliability and remaining useful life (RUL) of machinery. A probabilistic graphical method called Bayesian network (BN) was used for studying the effect of OCs on the system performance. The developed methodology has been demonstrated by analyzing the operational reliability and predicting the RUL of electrical motors operated in a heavy mining machinery.

Findings

The failure probabilities estimated from the historical data of the motor system are failure likelihood, and OCs are the evidence in the developed BN model. It has been observed that the performance and RUL of the motor are significantly influenced by OCs and maintenance. A threshold value of reliability at which the motor system requires maintenance or replacement has been proposed to guide management in decision making.

Originality/value

The Bayesian approach for studying the covariate of motor reliability and RUL estimation is a novel approach. This study will be beneficial for designing an appropriate maintenance schedule, reducing unplanned production downtime and reducing maintenance cost of electrical motor operated particularly in dynamic and harsh environmental industries.
