Abstract

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Kara) was grown in Open‐Top Chambers (OTCs) in Northern Egypt at ambient (ca 350 ppm) or doubled CO2 (ca 690 ppm) either in charcoal‐filtered air (15 nl l‐1) or in non‐filtered ambient air (78 nll‐1 O3) to investigate the changes in physiology and yield under long‐term elevated CO2 and/or O3 throughout 100 days. Ambient O3 level reduced net photosynthetic rates, number and weight of tubers by 18 per cent, 41 per cent and 21 per cent, respectively, whereas elevated CO2 caused the opposite effect where it increased the same parameters by 44 per cent, 37 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively. Significant O3 x CO2 interactions were detected. However, O3 caused an increase in GR and POD by 18 per cent and 35 per cent, respectively, while CO2 caused an increase in POD only by 46 per cent, and there was no effect of O3 and/or CO2 on other enzymes. The results of this study are discussed in relation to predicted atmospheric changes.

Abstract

Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence are two leading technologies that bought revolution to each and every field of humans using in daily life by making everything smarter than ever. IoT leads to a network of things which creates a self-configuring network. Improving farm productivity is essential to meet the rapidly growing demand for food. In this chapter, the authors have introduced a smart greenhouse by integration of two leading technologies in the market (i.e., Machine Learning and IoT). In proposed model, several sensors are used for data collection and managing the environment of greenhouse. The idea is to propose an IoT and Machine Learning based smart nursery that helps in healthy growing and monitoring of the seed. The structure will be a dome-like structure for observation and isolation of an egg with various sensors like pressure, humidity, temperature, light, moisture, conductivity, air quality, etc. to monitor the nursery internal environment and maintain the control and flow of water and other minerals inside the nursery. The nursery will have a solar panel from which it stores the electricity generated from the sun, a small fan to control the flow of air and pressure. A camera will also be equipped inside the nursery that will use computer vision technology to monitor the health of the plant and will be trained on the past data to notify the user if the plant is diseased or need attention.

Abstract

Incineration strengths of hazardous (2.8×108μg/s) and nonhazardous (6.31×108μg/s) materials were found from the quantities to be incinerated, chemical formulas, and the incineration time. The smoke stack geometry, exhaust dynamics, and different atmospheric stability conditions were used in the Gaussian model to predict the maximum concentration distances of 0.5 to about 6 km at the ground level in the downwind direction. However, trailing edges of some of exhaust distributions were found to extend beyond 120 km under some atmospheric stability conditions. The counties of Jefferson, Lonoke, Pulaski, Dallas, Cleveland, Calhoun, and Grant in the state of Arkansas are more likely to be affected than others. The possible major products in the hazardous incineration exhaust are chlorinated compounds. The results of this study are important to know the areas that fall under comparatively higher concentrations of incineration exhaust for further observations because of its inherent impact upon living beings, crop production, and environmental conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impacts of surface ozone pollution on rice profit, output and variable inputs in China.

Design/methodology/approach

This study estimates the rice profit function using county-level rice production data and ozone monitoring data in 2014 and 2015 to capture the impact of ozone pollution on rice profit. Then, it uses dual approach to identify the impacts of ozone on the supply of rice and the demand for variable inputs. The ozone concentration data are obtained from 1,412 monitoring stations established by the National Environmental Monitoring Centre of China.

Findings

The results show that surface ozone would significantly reduce rice profits; a 1% increase in (the daily average ozone concentration from 9 am to 4 pm) leads to a 0.1% decrease in profits. In addition, ozone has a negative impact on the levels of inputs and the supply of rice, and the elasticities of rice output, fertilizer input and labour input with respect to are −0.87, −0.86 and −0.78%, respectively. These results suggest that ozone pollution affects rice production via two channels: the direct damage on rice growth and the indirect negative impact of reducing variable inputs.

Originality/value

This study estimates the impacts of surface ozone pollution on rice profit and output, and quantifies its influence on variable inputs in China, which provides a better understanding of farmers' adaptation behaviour.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze research works on air pollution published in 2005-2014 and indexed in Web of Science Core Collection.

Design/methodology/approach

The data of research publications on “air pollution” from the Web of Science Core Collection database were collected with following search strategy: publications with terms “Air contaminat*”, “Air pollut*”, “pollut* air” or “contaminat* air” in their titles for the period of 2005-2014 were collected. A total of 4,424 articles were published on air pollution during the period of 2005-2014, and the data were used for creation of database in Microsoft Excel for the analysis purpose. Bibliometric analysis techniques were applied wherever necessary.

Findings

Out of 4,424 articles published on air pollution in different languages, 4,276 articles were in English. The years 2013 and 2014 showed rapid increase in number of articles published, 563 and 638, respectively. The increased number of articles resulted in an increase in number of pages published and references cited in the articles. The articles published in the year 2006 had received more number of citations (12,318), and the average citation per article for the period was 17.59. Environmental Science was the major Web of Science subject category under which a greater number of articles were published. Article entitled as “Health effects of fine particulate air pollution: Lines that connect”, published in Journal of The Air & Waste Management Association by Pope and Dockery (2006), was the highest cited article (1,743) for the period, and the top most active journals that published huge number of articles were Atmospheric Environment and Environmental Health Perspective, with 11.79 per cent of the total articles (4,424) published.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of the study are limited to the journals covered under Web of Science Core Collection database and articles having the following keywords in their titles: “Air contaminat*”, “Air pollut*”, “pollut* air” or “contaminat* air”.

Originality/value

This study would be useful to researchers and policy makers to get an insight into the research trends of air pollution for effective decision-making and formulation of new research proposals.

Abstract

Purpose

It is well known that the mixed convection process is the combined effect of the presence of both the forced and the free convection processes. In several applications such as environmental chambers, IC engines, etc. the forced convection is brought in by multiple suction/injection (S/I) effect. Study of mixed convection in a vertical square fluid saturated porous cavity with multiple S/I effect greatly contributes to such an understanding. So far, not much research work has reported in this direction. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to investigate such a mixed convection process in a fluid saturated vertical porous square cavity.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the authors numerically solved the couple partial differential equations governing the mixed convection process in a fluid saturated vertical square porous cavity by finite element method. The study is parametric in nature wherein the authors cover a large range of values for different parameters arising the mathematical model governing the problem under consideration.

Findings

The influence of multiple S/I effects on mixed convection is analyzed for a wide range of controlling parameters such as S/I flow velocities (a), S/I window size (D/H) and Rayleigh number (Ra). Both the flow and temperature fields are highly sensitive to magnitude of S/I velocity, S/I window slit size and “Ra”. While heat fluxes along the isothermal left vertical wall decrease with increasing S/I velocities they are formed to increase with increasing “(D/H)” and “Ra”. Nusselt numbers increase with increasing “Ra” and increasing size of S/I window slit size. Multi‐cellular circulation pattern and thermal boundary layers are seen to manifest in flow and temperature fields, respectively.

Research limitations/implications

The study is based on 2D model, but the model is generic in nature; also it is fully numerical in nature. Due to lack of apt literature no experimental support is provided. The mathematical model used in the study is based on certain assumptions such as isotropic porous medium, fluid is viscous in nature and follows Newtonian laws and the porous structure is saturated with fluid, etc. Regarding future work, 3D modelling and simulation is in progress and attempts are also being made to collaborate with experimental groups on the problem under investigation.

Practical implications

The results from the work are relevant to the context of heat and fluid flow studies in IC engines, influence of mixed convection process on bacterial growth process in environmental chambers and cooling of electronic devices, etc.

Originality/value

The paper describes a mathematical model, especially the boundary treatment, for describing the influence of multiple S/I effects on mixed convection flow in a vertical square enclosure filled with a Darcian fluid saturated homogeneous porous medium. To understand the physics behind the mixed convection process in the proposed configuration, extensive numerical simulations have been carried out for the first time for different values of the important governing parameters arising from the model.

An aircraft wing comprises one or more sections each foldablc about a fore‐and‐aft substantially horizontal axis and a power‐operated linearly moving member which works in a guideway and is connected through a link to a foldablc wing section such that with the foldablc section folded the link is substantially at right angles to the movable part so that, aided by the friction of that part with respect to its guide‐way, it prevents self‐return movement of the foldablc wing section. The folding wing section 1 is pivotally attached to the fixed wing stub 6 by brackets 2, 3, the bracket 2 being extended to form a member 7 having pivoted thereto one end of a link 8 the other end of which is pivoted to a rectangular slide 9 located in a straight open‐top guideway 10 carried by the wing section 6. The piston rod 12 of a hydraulic jack 11 is connected to the slide 9. An extension 13 of the wing section 1 is apertured at 13 so positioned with respect to a pair of apertured lugs 14 formed on a bracket 4 secured to the wing section 6 that a preferably power‐operated pin may be inserted therebetween to lock the folded wing in its spread position. When the wing section is folded the link 8 is positioned substantially at right angles to the guideway 10, the axis about which folding takes place being triangulated with respect to the axes of the pins passing through the ends of the link 8 so that return movement of the wing caused by wind gusts is prevented. An additional lock may be provided to hold one or both wings in a partial or fully folded position by providing a plurality of holes in the guideway 10 into any one ofwhich holes a pin may be inserted to prevent return movement of the slide 9.
