This paper aims to present a method for the efficient reduction of networks modelling parasitic couplings in very‐large‐scale integration (VLSI) circuits.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a method for the efficient reduction of networks modelling parasitic couplings in very‐large‐scale integration (VLSI) circuits.

Design/methodology/approach

The parasitic effects are modelled by large RLC networks and current sources for the digital switching currents. Based on the determined behaviour of the digital modules, an efficient description of these networks is proposed, which allows for a more efficient model reduction than standard methods.

Findings

The proposed method enables a fast and efficient simulation of the parasitic effects. Additionally, an extension of the reduction method to elements, which incorporate some supply voltage dependence to model the internal currents more precisely than independent current sources is presented.

Practical implications

The presented method can be applied to large electrical networks, used in the modelling of parasitic effects, for reducing their size. A reduced model is created which can be used in investigations with circuit simulators requiring a lowered computational effort.

Originality/value

Contrary to existing methods, the presented method includes the knowledge of the behaviour of the sources in the model to enhance the model reduction process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the embedding of linear and nonlinear order reduction methods in a theoretical framework for handling hierarchically interconnected dynamical systems.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the component connection modeling (CCM), a modified framework called mCCM for describing interconnected dynamic systems especially with hierarchical structures is introduced and used for order reduction purposes. The balanced truncation method for linear systems and the trajectory piecewise linear reduction scheme are used for the order reduction of systems described within the mCCM framework.

Findings

It is shown that order reduction methods can be embedded into the context of interconnected dynamical systems with the benefit of having a further degree of freedom in form of the hierarchical level, on which the order reduction is performed.

Originality/value

The aspect of hierarchy within system descriptions is exploited for order reduction purposes. This distinguishes the presented approach from common methods, which already start with single large-scale systems without explicitly considering hierarchical structures.

This paper proposes an algorithm for the extraction of reduced order models of MEMS switches, based on using a physics aware simplification technique.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper proposes an algorithm for the extraction of reduced order models of MEMS switches, based on using a physics aware simplification technique.

Design/methodology/approach

The reduced model is built progressively by increasing the complexity of the physical model. The approach starts with static analyses and continues with dynamic ones. Physical phenomena are introduced sequentially in the reduced model whose order is increased until accuracy, computed by assessing forces that are kept in the reduced model, is acceptable.

Findings

The technique is exemplified for RF-MEMS switches, but it can be extended for any device where physical phenomena can be included one by one, in a hierarchy of models. The extraction technique is based on analogies that are carried out for both the multiphysics and the full-wave electromagnetic phenomena and their couplings. In the final model, the multiphysics electromechanical phenomena is reduced to a system with lumped components with nonlinear elastic and damping forces, coupled with a system with distributed and lumped components which represents the reduced model of the RF electromagnetic phenomena.

Originality/value

Contrary to the order reduction by projection methods, this approach has the advantage that the simplified model can be easily understood, the equations and variables have significance for the user and the algorithm starts with a model of minimal order, which is increased until the approximation error is acceptable. The novelty of the proposed method is that, being tailored to a specific application, it is able to keep physical interpretation inside the reduced model. This is the reason why, the obtained model has an extremely low order, much lower than the one achievable with general state-of-the-art procedures.

Abstract

Purpose

It is very important to create a useful cyclic symmetric model for the investigation of the vibration reduction effect of hard-coating blisk. This study aims to develop a cyclic symmetry algorithm which can determine the mode of blisk in the sector coordinate system directly.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the exponential and real quasi-equivalent Fourier matrices, the formulas for solving the sector mode were derived, and the relationship between the two kinds of sector modes was also discussed. Based on the proposed cyclic symmetry algorithm, the vibration characteristics of an academic blisk were solved, and the formulas for solving the natural characteristics and vibration responses of the coated blisk were given.

Findings

A blisk with NiCrAlCoY+YSZ hard coating on both sides of each blade was chosen as a case to demonstrate the presented method. Based on the verification analysis model, the influences of coating thickness on the vibration reduction effect of the blisk were discussed. The results show that the hard coating has good vibration reduction effect on the blisk even the coating thickness is very thin and the vibration reduction effect of hard coating in the high frequency range is obviously better than that in the low frequency range.

Originality/value

As a large number of reduced order modeling methods of blisk are implemented based on the sector modes, the proposed method which can obtain the sector modes directly will significantly improve the efficiency of dynamic modeling and analysis of the coated blisk structure.

Abstract

Purpose

Model order reduction (MOR) has been widely used in the electric networks but little has been done to reduce higher index differential algebraic equations (DAEs). The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Most methods first do an index reduction before reducing a higher DAE but this can lead to a loss of physical properties of the system.

Findings

The paper presents a MOR method for DAEs called the index-aware MOR (IMOR) which can reduce a DAE while preserving its physical properties such as the index. The feasibility of this method is tested on real-life electric networks.

Originality/value

MOR has been widely used to reduce large systems from electric networks but little has been done to reduce higher index DAEs. Most methods first do an index reduction before reducing a large system of DAEs but this can lead to a loss of physical properties of the system. The paper presents a MOR method for DAEs called the IMOR which can reduce a DAE while preserving its physical properties such as the index. The feasibility of this method is tested on real-life electric networks.

Abstract

Purpose

To reduce the computational scale for quasi-magnetostatic problems, model order reduction is a good option. Reduced-order modelling techniques based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and centroidal Voronoi tessellation (CVT) have been used to solve many engineering problems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the computational principle, accuracy and efficiency of the POD-based and the CVT-based reduced-order method when dealing with quasi-magnetostatic problems.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper investigates computational features of the reduced-order method based on POD and CVT methods for quasi-magnetostatic problems. Firstly the construction method for the POD and the CVT reduced-order basis is introduced. Then, a reduced model is constructed using high-fidelity finite element solutions and a Galerkin projection. Finally, the transient quasi-magnetostatic problem of the TEAM 21a model is studied with the proposed reduced-order method.

Findings

For the TEAM 21a model, the numerical results show that both POD-based and CVT-based reduced-order approaches can greatly reduce the computational time compared with the full-order finite element method. And the results obtained from both reduced-order models are in good agreement with the results obtained from the full-order model, while the computational accuracy of the POD-based reduced-order model is a little higher than the CVT-based reduced-order model.

Originality/value

The CVT method is introduced to construct the reduced-order model for a quasi-magnetostatic problem. The computational accuracy and efficiency of the presented approaches are compared.

Abstract

Purpose

To simulate large parasitic resistive networks, one must reduce the size of the circuit models through methods that are accurate and preserve terminal connectivity and network sparsity. The purpose here is to present such a method, which exploits concepts from graph theory in a systematic fashion.

Design/methodology/approach

The model order reduction problem is formulated for parasitic resistive networks through graph theory concepts and algorithms are presented based on the notion of vertex cut in order to reduce the size of electronic circuit models. Four variants of the basic method are proposed and their respective merits discussed.

Findings

The algorithms proposed enable the production of networks that are significantly smaller than those produced by earlier methods, in particular the method described in the report by Lenaers entitled “Model order reduction for large resistive networks”. The reduction in the number of resistors achieved through the algorithms is even more pronounced in the case of large networks.

Originality/value

The paper seems to be the first to make a systematic use of vertex cuts in order to reduce a parasitic resistive network.

Abstract

Purpose

Nonlinear dynamical systems may, under certain conditions, be represented by a bilinear system. The paper is concerned with the construction of the controllability and observability gramians for the corresponding bilinear system. Such gramians form the core of model reduction schemes involving balancing.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper examines certain properties of the bilinear system and identifies parameters that capture important information relating to the behaviour of the system.

Findings

Novel approaches for the determination of approximate constant gramians for use in balancing‐type model reduction techniques are presented. Numerical examples are given which indicate the efficacy of the proposed formulations.

Research limitations/implications

The systems under consideration are restricted to the so‐called weakly nonlinear systems, i.e. those without strong nonlinearities where the essential type of behaviour of the system is determined by its linear part.

Practical implications

The suggested methods lead to an improvement in the accuracy of model reduction. Model reduction is a vital aspect of modern system simulation.

Originality/value

The proposed novel approaches for model reduction are particularly beneficial for the design of controllers for nonlinear systems and for the design of radio‐frequency integrated circuits.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper is concerned with interpolatory proper orthogonal decomposition (IPOD) methods for nonlinear transmission line circuits. This paper aims to examine several factors that must be considered when applying such model reduction techniques to this kind of circuit.

Design/methodology/approach

Two types of POD will be implemented. In each case, the choice of the order of the reduced model and the order of the interpolation space shall be considered. The stability of the models shall be explored.

Findings

The results indicate that the order for the reduced model to obtain accurate results depends on the chosen method when considering nonlinear transmission lines. The results also indicate that the structure of the nonlinear transmission line is crucial for determining the stability of the reduced models.

Originality/value

The work compares two IPOD methods and discusses the issues involved in achieving an accurate and stable reduced-order model for a nonlinear transmission line.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an interpolation-based projection framework for model reduction of quadratic-bilinear systems. The approach constructs projection matrices from the bilinear part of the original quadratic-bilinear descriptor system and uses these matrices to project the original system.

Design/methodology/approach

The projection matrices are constructed by viewing the bilinear system as a linear parametric system, where the input associated with the bilinear part is treated as a parameter. The advantage of this approach is that the projection matrices can be constructed reliably by using an a posteriori error bound for linear parametric systems. The use of the error bound allows us to select a good choice of interpolation points and parameter samples for the construction of the projection matrices by using a greedy-type framework.

Findings

The results are compared with the standard quadratic-bilinear projection methods and it is observed that the approximations through the proposed method are comparable to the standard method but at a lower computational cost (offline time).

Originality/value

In addition to the proposed model order reduction framework, the authors extend the one-sided moment matching parametric model order reduction (PMOR) method to a two-sided method that doubles the number of moments matched in the PMOR method.
