Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to frame a dual-phase-lag model using the fractional theory of thermoelasticity with relaxation time. The generalized Fourier law of heat conduction based upon Tzou model that includes temperature gradient, the thermal displacement and two different translations of heat flux vector and temperature gradient has been used to formulate the heat conduction model. The microstructural interactions and corresponding thermal changes have been studied due to the involvement of relaxation time and delay time translations. This results in achieving the finite speed of thermal wave. Classical coupled and generalized thermoelasticity theories are recovered by considering the various special cases for different order of fractional derivatives and two different translations under consideration.

Design/methodology/approach

The work presented in this manuscript proposes a dual-phase-lag mathematical model of a thick circular plate in a finite cylindrical domain subjected to axis-symmetric heat flux. The model has been designed in the context of fractional thermoelasticity by considering two successive terms in Taylor’s series expansion of fractional Fourier law of heat conduction in the two different translations of heat flux vector and temperature gradient. The analytical results have been obtained in Laplace transform domain by transforming the original problem into eigenvalue problem using Hankel and Laplace transforms. The numerical inversions of Laplace transforms have been achieved using the Gaver−Stehfast algorithm, and convergence criterion has been discussed. For illustrative purpose, the dual-phase-lag model proposed in this manuscript has been applied to a periodically varying heat source. The numerical results have been depicted graphically and compared with classical, fractional and generalized thermoelasticity for various fractional orders under consideration.

Findings

The microstructural interactions and corresponding thermal changes have been studied due to the involvement of relaxation time and delay time translations. This results in achieving the finite speed of thermal wave. Classical coupled and generalized thermoelasticity theories are recovered by considering the various special cases for different order of fractional derivatives and two different translations under consideration. This model has been applied to study the thermal effects in a thick circular plate subjected to a periodically varying heat source.

Practical implications

A dual-phase-lag model can effectively be incorporated to study the transient heat conduction problems for an exponentially decaying pulse boundary heat flux and/or for a short-pulse boundary heat flux in long solid tubes and cylinders. This model is also applicable to study the various effects of the thermal lag ratio and the shift time. These dual-phase-lag models are also practically applicable in the problems of modeling of nanoscale heat transport problems of semiconductor devices and accordingly semiconductors can be classified as per their ability of heat conduction.

Originality/value

To the authors’ knowledge, no one has discussed fractional thermoelastic dual-phase-lag problem associated with relaxation time in a finite cylindrical domain for a thick circular plate subjected to an axis-symmetric heat source. This is the latest and novel contribution to the field of thermal mechanics.

Abstract

Purpose

Tuberculosis (TB) continues to c-exist with humans despite many TB control programs and elimination strategies. This depicts that some barriers are not allowing achieving the desired results. The current study aims to focus on identification and ranking of such barriers to facilitate TB control programs in developing countries.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present study, 13 barriers that can influence success rate of TB elimination strategies have been recognized with an in-depth assessment of related literature and opinions of specialists from medical industry and academic world. The interpretive structural modeling (ISM) and decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) techniques have been employed for the ranking of barriers.

Findings

Based on driving power of barriers, the study coined that underinvestment is a major barrier followed by poor implementation of government policies and programs, poverty and poor primary health care infrastructure.

Research limitations/implications

The findings may guide healthcare service providers and researchers in analyzing the barriers and understanding the necessity of further advancements to decrease the count of already existing and incident cases.

Practical implications

Policy- and decision-makers may utilize the information on dependence and driving power of barriers for better planning and effective execution of TB control strategies.

Originality/value

Although a lot of literature is available on different barriers that are affecting success of TB strategies, the current study analyzes all the key barriers collectively for the prioritization of barriers.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to deal with integrated planning and scheduling problem in multi-site manufacturing environment and provides a comprehensive review of literature. Classification schemes and various aspects of planning and scheduling problem in multi-site manufacturing are highlighted.

Design/methodology/approach

A structured review methodology is adopted to classify the relevant literature. Taxonomy for classification of the problem is presented, followed by review of modelling approaches, solution strategies and challenges faced in multi-site integrated planning and scheduling problem.

Findings

The paper is concluded with interesting research findings and a short view on directions related to modelling approach, solution strategy and technique for further developments in the area of multi-site integrated planning and scheduling.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this study would be helpful for future researchers and practitioners to provide a knowledge base and to further work in this area.

Originality/value

This study attempts to consolidate the diverse literature available and highlight the various aspects of planning and scheduling in multi-site manufacturing.

Case overview

Sonalika Group, situated in Punjab, India, started its operations in 1969 by manufacturing agricultural implements and equipment’s. By 1990, the firm graduated into manufacturing tractors. It gradually expanded its wings in countries like Nigeria, Argentina and Brazil and became the third largest tractor manufacturer of India in FY 2012. The year 2005 was a landmark year when it entered the passenger vehicle segment through its subsidiary International Cars and Motors Limited that launched a multi-utility vehicle (MUV) named Rhino. The vehicle was expected to fill up the vacant spot created by the withdrawal of “Qualis”, which was a highly popular MUV manufactured by Toyota. However, the enthusiasm of launching Rhino waned with time because its sales did not pick up as expected. After selling around 5,000 units of Rhino, the company stopped its production as the product had started showing up teething problems. The marketers and designers burnt midnight oil to bring out an improved version of Rhino. This version was christened “Extreme” and launched in 2012. Despite all marketing, sales and service efforts, “Extreme” also failed to take off. The group is wondering when it was so successful in tractors why it has not been successful in passenger vehicle category. It has to work out a strategy to be successful in passenger vehicle segment as well.

Abstract

Purpose

The operational activities of manufacturing organizations are continuously degrading the environment. Circular economy adoption can help industries optimize their resources along with minimal waste generation. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the barriers that hinder the adoption of circular economy (CE) in the manufacturing sector.

Design/methodology/approach

The barriers are extracted from a critical review of the literature and listed into three categories as social, economic and environmental. The barriers in each category are then analyzed using the fuzzy-based analytic hierarchy process method. The approach is capable to consider the fuzziness in the preference of barriers and determine their priority.

Findings

The pairwise comparison and weight of all the main and sub-criteria are computed, which helps in deciding the ranking of barriers. The results show that social criteria are having the highest importance followed by economic and environmental criteria. Among all the sub-criteria, low demand and acceptance of remanufactured products is at the highest level followed by lack of government support and legislation barrier.

Originality/value

The outcome of this study would be helpful for the decision makers and business managers in the manufacturing sector to focus on the barriers in each category and accordingly formulate strategies for CE adoption.

Abstract

Purpose

Sustainable production (SP) is an efficient and influential approach of production for Indian manufacturing industries as it preserves the social, environmental and economic aspects of production activities altogether. The objective of this research work is to investigate the implementation status of SP practices in Indian manufacturing industries by utilizing empirical survey methodology.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire survey methodology was adapted, and the questionnaire was prepared by intense literature survey along with by opinions from experts in the field of SP. This questionnaire was sent to 753 different organizations at different locations across India. This study collected responses from manufacturing industries as per 2021 directory of Confederation of Indian Industries for the duration of 7 week. Top level managers were the target respondents. The study propagated with 242 responses which were observed complete in all respects.

Findings

The study identified that though the majority of the organizations are claiming to follow SP practices since long time, they actually are lagging in proper understanding SP practices. Majority of them are implementing it in specific departments in their organization. They are coming across multiple barriers in the implementation of SP practices among which unrecognized financial benefits and lack of proper government policies are prime. The study suggests that the Indian organizations needs feasible framework with adaptable guidelines.

Research limitations/implications

This work is centered towards manufacturing organizations and targets only the leading industrial sectors in India. Thus, the outcomes of this study may not be generalized for all the sectors of Indian industries. Additionally, it can also be assumed that higher number of responses would have contributed to more clear visualization of implementation status of SP practices among Indian industries.

Originality/value

Sustainable approaches in production activities are very lucrative for industries worldwide, due to their advantages. Numerous researchers are also putting their efforts to explore more about various aspects of sustainability. Mostly they are focusing on single or few aspects of SP and its implementation in particular region or country. Very few research works are dedicated to knowing the implementation status of SP in Indian manufacturing industries and they are limited in various aspects. This study presents a dedicated approach to investigate the implementation status of SP practices in Indian manufacturing industries.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine which organisational and other factors can facilitate the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in Indian management institutes and their interrelationship.

Design/methodology/approach

To determine the factors influencing AI adoption, a synthesis-based examination of the literature was used. The interpretative structural modelling (ISM) method is used to determine the most effective factors among the identified ones and the inter-relationship among the factors, while the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method is used to analyse the cause-and-effect relationships among the factors in a quantitative manner. The approaches used in the analysis aid in understanding the relationship among the factors affecting AI adoption in management institutes of India.

Findings

This study concludes that leadership support plays the most significant role in the adoption of AI in Indian management institutes. The results from the DEMATEL analysis also confirmed the findings from the ISM and Matrice d’ Impacts croises- multiplication applique and classment (MICMAC) analyses. Remarkably, no linkage factor (unstable one) was reported in the research. Leadership support, technological context, financial consideration, organizational context and human resource readiness are reported as independent factors.

Practical implications

This study provides a listing of the important factors affecting the adoption of AI in Indian management institutes with their structural relationships. The findings provide a deeper insight about AI adoption. The study's societal implications include the delivery of better outcomes by Indian management institutes.

Originality/value

According to the authors, this study is a one-of-a-kind effort that involves the synthesis of several validated models and frameworks and uncovers the key elements and their connections in the adoption of AI in Indian management institutes.

Case overview/synopsis

This case is about the quest of three MBA students who accidentally get into argument about footwear brands. This argument leads them to Punjabi ethnic footwear popularly known as “Punjabi Jutti.” They decide to understand the background of “Punjabi Jutti” and the possibility of developing a brand for the same. An extensive research was carried out through the various online and offline platforms. The research included searching through the existing literature, collecting data from the various online platforms such as e-commerce websites and interviews from the field. The research revealed that this traditional artwork is an unorganized sector. The manufacturers and marketers are two main parts of this business. However, the mainstay of the business is the skilled labors who know the art of making “Punjabi Jutti.” This art has been inherited by them from their previous generations. Also, it was found that there was good demand of the “Punjabi Jutti” in India and it was exported to various countries as well. Customers had a mix response toward these products. This extensive research has now put these students in a dilemma as to what should be the next step. Should they step into this business by creating their own brand? Will this entrepreneurship venture be sustainable? If they created a brand for the “Punjabi Jutti” then what kind of brand it would be?

While rapid increase in demand for foods but limited availability of croplands has forced to adopt input-intensive farming practices to increase yield, there are serious long-term ecological implications including degradation of biodiversity. It is increasingly recognised that ensuring agricultural sustainability under the changing climatic conditions requires a change in the production system along with necessary policies and institutional arrangements. In this context, this chapter examines if climate-smart agriculture (CSA) can facilitate adaptation and mitigation practices by improving resource utilisation efficiency in India. Such an attempt has special significance as the existing studies have very limited discussions on three main aspects, viz., resource productivity, adaptation practices and mitigation strategies in a comprehensive manner. Based on insights from the existing studies, this chapter points out that CSA can potentially make significant contribution to enhancing resource productivity, adaptation practices, mitigation strategies and food security, especially among the land-constrained farmers who are highly prone to environmental shocks. In this connection, staggered trench irrigation structure has facilitated rainwater harvesting, local irrigation and livelihood generation in West Bengal. However, it is necessary to revisit the existing approaches to promotion of CSA and dissemination of information on the design of local adaptation strategies. This chapter also proposes a change in the food system from climate-sensitive to CSA through integration of technologies, institutions and policies.

Abstract

Purpose

Electricity savings from energy-efficient appliances (EEAs) may have a significant impact on reducing global warming. There are several barriers confronted by EEAs, which have lowered their acceptance rate. The current study aims to identify and highlight key barriers to strengthening domestic sector adoption of EEAs in developing countries.

Design/methodology/approach

In the current study, 13 barriers were discovered by an in-depth literature review and the judgement of experts as well. Further, integrated “interpretive structural modeling” (ISM) and “decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory” (DEMATEL) approaches are used to evaluate barriers. The ISM technique is implemented to categorize barriers into distinct hierarchy levels and “cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification” (MICMAC) analysis to divide barriers among four clusters “independent, linkage, dependent and autonomous.” Moreover, the DEMATEL methodology is applied to classify the barriers among cause and effect clusters.

Findings

The integrated ISM and DEMATEL approach suggests that the topmost influencing barriers to the acceptance of EEAs are the lack of Government policies and initiatives, lack of attractive loan financing and subsidized energy prices.

Practical implications

This study would help researchers, regulators, producers, policymakers and consumers to comprehend the need for additional developments and understand that the adoption of EEAs is a current need. Overall, the results of this study expedite stakeholders with the key barriers that may assist to enhance the acceptance of EEAs within the domestic sector.

Originality/value

An extensive literature survey showed a dearth of studies for the identification, modeling and analysis of barriers collectively. Therefore, the current work used the ISM and DEMATEL approaches to fill the gap and to provide more comprehensive knowledge on barriers related to the acceptance of EEA.
