Abstract

Purpose

Sulfate-induced degradation is one of the most important factors influencing the durability of concrete. The paper aims to clarify the transport-deterioration process of sulfates in concrete and thus to explain the mechanism and the deterioration of concrete by sulfates.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents an experimental study into the evolution of the transport-deterioration process of sulfate ions in concrete in a pure soaking environment.

Findings

The microscopic morphology of individual concrete layers at different depths and the change law of the sulfate ion concentration at the corresponding depths were investigated for different exposure times. Furthermore, the relationship between the changes in microstructure and the transport characteristics of the sulfate ions was studied.

Originality/value

A method to calculate the cracking level sulfate ion concentration was proposed.

Abstract

Purpose

Digital healthcare has become one of the most important Internet applications in the recent years, and digital platforms have been acting as interfaces between the patients and physicians. Although these technologies enhance patient convenience, they create new challenges in platform management. For instance, on physician rating websites, information overload negatively influences patients' decision-making in relation to selecting a physician. This scenario calls for an automated mechanism to provide real-time rankings of physicians. Motivated by an online healthcare platform, this study develops a method to deliver physician ranking on platforms by considering patients' browse behaviors and the capacities of service resources.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use a probabilistic model for explicitly capturing the browse behaviors of patients. Since the large volume of information in digital systems makes it intractable to solve the dynamic ranking problem, we design a ranking with value approximation algorithm that combines a greedy ranking policy and the value function approximation methods.

Findings

The authors found that the approximation methods are quite effective in dealing with the ranking optimization on the digital healthcare system, and it is mainly because the authors incorporate the patient behaviors and patient availability in the model.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first studies to present solutions to the dynamic physician ranking problem. The ranking algorithms can also help platforms improve system and operational performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to demonstrate the effect of varying chromium content on the wear behavior of white cast iron, to study the interaction relationship between cementite and pearlite in white cast iron, while estimating their contribution rate in abrasive wear.

Design/methodology/approach

To study interaction of cementite-pearlite of white cast irons with different chromium content in three-body abrasive wear, three kinds of chromium white cast iron, bulk single-phase cementite, pure pearlite samples and the white cast iron (WCI), were prepared using the melting and casting technique. The so-called pure pearlite samples have the same chemical composition, microstructure and properties as the pearlite matrix in white cast iron.

Findings

Results indicated that the interaction has a negative value. Its absolute value decreased with increasing chromium addition. Meanwhile, a high load resulted in an increased interaction value. The contribution rate of cementite to interaction, which was higher than that of pearlite, increased with increasing chromium addition. This indicated cementite was a main phase. Besides, the reductive size of abrasive has a significant effect on the contribution rate at the high load. These prominent cementite occurred fracture, when small size abrasive indented the matrix. These result in the absence of a protective effect of cementite during wear process. Eventually, the contribution rate of cementite decreased significantly.

Originality/value

This paper demonstrates the effect of varying chromium content on wear behavior of white cast iron, to study the interaction relationship between cementite and pearlite in white cast iron while estimating their contribution rate in abrasive wear.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a hybrid algorithm of the heuristic algorithm and the orthogonal design to optimize schemes of welding points (WPs). Assembly variation plays an important role in product manufacture. Different schemes of WPs can influence the sensitivity matrices between part and assembly variations.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper proposes a hybrid algorithm to optimize schemes of WPs among components. The hybrid algorithm is composed of the heuristic algorithm and the orthogonal design. The heuristic algorithm is used to optimize the initial scheme; moreover, the last result is generated according to the orthogonal table. Although the algorithm cannot assure generating the optimal scheme, it can acquire the satisfying result by using few times of finite element analysis.

Findings

Finally, a rear bracket lamp assembly is illustrated to optimize the schemes of WPs between two components. Results show that the algorithm is efficient to generate the optimized WPs scheme for sheet metal assemblies.

Originality/value

A hybrid algorithm is proposed to optimize schemes of WPs among components, which is composed of the heuristic algorithm and the orthogonal design.

Abstract

Purpose

Restaurants’ outdoor signage plays an irreplaceable role in attracting potential diners, as it conveys important functional and symbolic meanings of the businesses. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of typographic design elements of outdoor signage on consumers’ perceptions of authenticity. This study also tests the linkage between authenticity and willingness to dine, as well as the moderating effect of frequency of dining in ethnic restaurants on the relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a 2 (simplified vs traditional Chinese characters) × 2 (calligraphy vs computer font) × 2 (vertical vs horizontal text flow) between-subject design, the authors did two experiments with 786 Chinese diners. Restaurant authenticity and willingness to dine are dependent variables, and openness to ethnic cuisine is the control variable.

Findings

Display characters and text flow significantly affect restaurant authenticity. Furthermore, the results of this study demonstrate that display characters interact with typeface to influence restaurant authenticity. Consumers’ perceived authenticity significantly increases their willingness to dine. The frequency of dining in ethnic restaurants moderates the relationship between restaurant authenticity and willingness to dine.

Practical implications

Ethnic restaurateurs should pay attention to the outdoor signage design, as it affects potential consumers’ authenticity perceptions. Specifically, in Mainland China, traditional Chinese characters and vertical text direction increase potential consumers’ authenticity perceptions.

Originality/value

This study extends the semiotic theory and applies the cue–judgment–behavior model in the hospitality literature. This study also provides new understanding of authenticity by identifying the influence of typographic design on authenticity, which confirms the semiotic theory that certain semiotic cues affect consumers’ judgments.

Abstract

Purpose

This work is concerned with the development and the numerical investigation of a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for the simulation of two‐dimensional time‐harmonic electromagnetic wave propagation problems.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed HDG method for the discretization of the two‐dimensional transverse magnetic Maxwell equations relies on an arbitrary high order nodal interpolation of the electromagnetic field components and is formulated on triangular meshes. In the HDG method, an additional hybrid variable is introduced on the faces of the elements, with which the element‐wise (local) solutions can be defined. A so‐called conservativity condition is imposed on the numerical flux, which can be defined in terms of the hybrid variable, at the interface between neighbouring elements. The linear system of equations for the unknowns associated with the hybrid variable is solved here using a multifrontal sparse LU method. The formulation is given, and the relationship between the considered HDG method and a standard upwind flux‐based DG method is also examined.

Findings

The approximate solutions for both electric and magnetic fields converge with the optimal order of p+1 in L2 norm, when the interpolation order on every element and every interface is p and the sought solution is sufficiently regular. The presented numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed HDG method, especially when compared with a classical upwind flux‐based DG method.

Originality/value

The work described here is a demonstration of the viability of a HDG formulation for solving the time‐harmonic Maxwell equations through a detailed numerical assessment of accuracy properties and computational performances.

Abstract

Online reputation manager has become increasingly important in tourism industry. Managers, regardless of working for a hospitality structure or a tourism destination, are paying more and more attention in respect of the importance of reputational levels. Online reputation, in fact, originates in visitor's user-generated contents (UGCs) but reverberates on the whole web, on successive visitors' attitude and behavior, and on managed organization performances. How to manage online reputation in tourism and destination management anyway mostly stayed an anecdotal topic for many years. While best practices exist, indeed, literature has frequently neglected their systematization. Building on this need, this book will try to improve and organize the existing body of knowledge on this topic to help future hotel and destination managers to better deal with the mounting environmental complexity.

Abstract

Purpose

In recent years, to solve the contradiction between energy supply and demand, the Chinese Government has vigorously promoted shale gas development. With the rapid development of the shale gas industry, the environmental impact problems have become increasingly serious. Therefore, it is of great significance to carry out a comprehensive environmental impact assessment of shale gas development. This study aims to provide a theoretical basis for enterprises to make development decisions on shale gas projects by constructing a model of comprehensive environmental impact assessment for shale gas development.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the comprehensive environmental impact factors of shale gas development are analyzed from the two aspects of the natural environment and macro environment, and the index system of comprehensive environmental impact assessment for shale gas development including 7 secondary indicators and 24 tertiary indicators is constructed. Owing to the fact that qualitative indicators are difficult to quantify in the evaluation process, the method of intuitionistic fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (IFAHP) is adopted for evaluation. This method (IFAHP) can delicately describe the hesitancy degree of the decision-makers in the process of assigning a weight to the indicators, and make the weight assignment of each index more accurate. Furthermore, this method overcomes the shortcomings of the conventional methods, such as the complexity of calculation and the large amount of calculation.

Findings

The evaluation model is applied to a shale gas platform drilling project in Southwest China. Based on the ratings from 13 experts, the comprehensive environmental impact assessment grade of this project is good, indicating that the shale gas development project is feasible. The result is basically in line with the actual situation.

Originality/value

Based on the consideration of the natural environmental impacts of shale gas development, this paper also has considered the macro environmental impact of shale gas development, and has established the index system of comprehensive environmental impact assessment for shale gas development from the two aspects of the natural environment and macro environment. To overcome such difficulties as incomplete evaluation by decision-makers, cumbersome calculation process and a large amount of calculation, this paper has adopted the method of IFAHP to evaluate and has established a comprehensive environmental impact assessment model for shale gas development based on IFAHP.
