Abstract

Purpose

The high demand for fast, energy-efficient, compact computational blocks in digital electronics has led the researchers to use approximate computing in applications where inaccuracy of outputs is tolerable. The purpose of this paper is to present two ultra-high-speed current-mode approximate full adders (FA) by using carbon nanotube field-effect transistors.

Design/methodology/approach

Instead of using threshold detectors, which are common elements in current-mode logic, diodes are used to stabilize voltage. Zener diodes and ultra-low-power diodes are used within the first and second proposed designs, respectively. This innovation eliminates threshold detectors from critical path and makes it shorter. Then, the new adders are employed in the image processing application of Laplace filter, which detects edges in an image.

Findings

Simulation results demonstrate very high-speed operation for the first and second proposed designs, which are, respectively, 44.7 per cent and 21.6 per cent faster than the next high-speed adder cell. In addition, they make a reasonable compromise between power-delay product (PDP) and other important evaluating factors in the context of approximate computing. They have very few transistors and very low total error distance. In addition, they do not propagate error to higher bit positions by generating output carry correctly. According to the investigations, up to four inexact FA can be used in the Laplace filter computations without a significant image quality loss. The employment of the first and second proposed designs results in 42.4 per cent and 32.2 per cent PDP reduction compared to when no approximate FA are used in an 8-bit ripple adder.

Originality/value

Two new current-mode inexact FA are presented. They use diodes as voltage regulators to design current-mode approximate full-adders with very short critical path for the first time.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present two new follower‐based current‐mode multifunction filters. Each of the proposed circuits can realize highpass, bandpass and lowpass filters, simultaneously.

Design/methodology/approach

The input terminals of the proposed current‐mode biquadratic filters are virtual grounded. The output terminals of the proposed circuits can be easily cascaded with the similar sections.

Findings

Highpass, bandpass and lowpass filters can be obtained simultaneously from the proposed circuits using only one or two followers.

Originality/value

The paper presents new ideas for follower applications.

Purpose

Current-mode approach promises faster and more precise comparators that lead to high-performance and accurate winner-take-all circuits. The purpose of this paper is to present a new high-performance, high-accuracy current-mode min/max circuit for low-voltage applications. In addition, the proposed circuit is designed based on a new efficient high-resolution current conveyor-based fully differential current comparator.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed design detects the min and max values of two analog current signals by means of a current comparator and a logic module. The comparator compares the values of the input current signals accurately and generates two digital control signals and the logic module determines the min and max values based on the controls signals. In addition, an accurate current copy module is utilized to copy the input current signals and convey them to the comparator and the logic module.

Findings

The results of the comprehensive simulations, conducted using HSPICE with the TSMC 90 nm CMOS technology, demonstrate the high-performance and robust operation of the proposed design even in the presence of process, temperature, input current and supply voltage variations. For a case in point, for 5 μA differential input current the average propagation delay and power consumption of the proposed circuit are attained as 150 ps and 150 µW, respectively, which leads to more than 64 percent improvement in terms of power-delay product as compared with the most efficient design, previously presented in the literature.

Originality/value

A new efficient structure for current-mode min-max circuit is proposed based on a novel current comparator design which is accurate, high-performance and robust to process, voltage and temperature variations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to enhance the response of quadratic boost converter inverter system (QBCIS) and also investigate proportional integral (PI) and fractional order proportional integral derivative (FOPID)-based space vector modulation inverter (SVMI) systems.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents modern expansion in control methods and power electronics have created wind-based AC to AC converters that relays to AC drives. The process includes the flow of quadratic boost converter (QBC) and SVMI locate their technique in associating permanent magnet synchronous generator and three phase load. This effort conveys with digital simulation using MATLAB/Simulink and hardware implementation of current mode wind-based QBCIS.

Findings

The direct current (DC) output from the rectifier is boosted using Quadratic Boost Converter (QBC). The DC yield of QBC is provided to the SVMI. The alternating current (AC) yield voltage is attained by using three-phase filter. The investigations are done with PI and FOPID-based SVMI systems. Current mode FOPID control is proposed to improve the time response of QBCIS system.

Originality/value

The simulation results are compared with the hardware results of QBCIS. The results of the comparison of PI with FOPID controlled by converters are made to show the improvement in terms of settling time and steady-state error.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to predict future career paths of university students, distinguishing between paid employment, running one’s own independent business and running a family business. The main predictor is the students’ current mode of entrepreneurial exposure, both in terms of the students running their own business, and in terms of their parents running their own business.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on a comprehensive survey held in May 2013 among 1,490 business and law students of Kozminski University in Warsaw, Poland. To predict future career expectations in ten years’ time, multinomial logit regressions were employed.

Findings

The authors find that, among students with a family business background, those students who are actively involved in their parents’ business are significantly more likely to pursue joining the family firm, rather than starting their own business.

Practical implications

In order to stimulate business succession, universities with a large proportion of students with family business background may consider launching dedicated programs promoting the interest of students in the businesses run by their parents.

Originality/value

The authors investigate to what extent active participation of university students in their parents’ business is associated with a higher probability to pursue a career in family business. The research has important implications in light of the increasing difficulty in Europe to find successors for family businesses.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a low-power complementary MOS (CMOS) current sensor for control circuit in an integrated DC-DC buck converter.

Design/methodology/approach

The integrated DC-DC converter, which is composed of feedback control circuit and power block, is designed with 0.35-µm CMOS process. Current sensor in the control circuit is integrated with sense-FET and voltage-follower circuits to reduce power consumption and improve its sensing accuracy. In the current-sensing circuit, the size ratio of the power metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) to the sensing transistor (K) is 1,000, and a current-mirror is used for a voltage follower. N-channel MOS acts as a switching device in the current-sensing circuit, where the sensing FET is in parallel with the power MOSFET. The amplifier and comparator are designed to obtain a high gain and a fast transient time.

Findings

Experiment shows that the current sensor is operated with accuracy of more than 85 per cent, and the transient time of the error amplifier is controlled within 100 µs. The sensing current is in the range of a few hundred µA at a frequency of 0.6-2 MHz and an input voltage of 3-5 V. The output voltage is obtained as expected with the ripple ratio within 5 per cent.

Originality/value

The proposed current sensor in DC-DC converter provides an accurately sensed inductor current with a significant reduction in power consumption in the range of 0.2 mW. High-accuracy regulation is obtained using the proposed current sensor. As the sensor utilizes simple switch-type voltage follower and sense-FET, it can be widely applied to other low-power applications such as high-frequency oscillator and over-current protection circuit.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to achieve two main objectives. First, to introduce to the literature a new versatile active building block, namely, voltage differencing differential voltage current conveyor (VD-DVCC) for analog signal processing applications. Second, to design a novel electronically tunable mixed-mode universal filter. The designed filter provides low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, band-reject and all-pass responses in voltage-mode (VM), current-mode (CM), trans-impedance-mode (TIM) and trans-admittance-mode (TAM).

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed filter uses two VD-DVCCs, three resistors and two capacitors. All the capacitors used are grounded, which is advantageous from the monolithic integration point of view. The VD-DVCC is designed and validated in Cadence software using CMOS 0.18 µm process design kit from Silterra Malaysia at a supply voltage of ±1 V.

Findings

The proposed novel filter enjoys many attractive features including as follows: the ability to operate in all four modes, no requirement of capacitive matching, tunability of quality factor (Q) independent of pole frequency, availability of both inverting and non-inverting outputs for VM and TIM mode, high output impedance explicit current output for CM and TAM, no requirement for double/negative input signals (voltage/current) for response realization and low active and passive sensitivities. The filter is designed for a pole frequency of 5.305 MHz. The obtained results bear a close resemblance with the theoretical findings.

Originality/value

The proposed novel filter structure requires a minimum number of active and passive components and provides operation in all four operating modes. The filter will find application in structures of mixed-mode systems.

Purpose

Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is widely used in the treatment of skin disease, surface modification of material and other fields of electronics. The purpose of this paper is to design a high-performance power supply with a compact structure for excimer lamps in electronics application.

Design/methodology/approach

To design a high-performance power supply with a compact structure remains a challenge for excimer lamps in electronics application, a current-source type power supply in a single stage with power factor correction (PFC) is proposed. It consists of an excitation voltage generation unit and a PFC unit. By planning the modes of the excitation voltage generation unit, a bipolar pulse excitation voltage with a high rising and falling rate is generated. And a high power factor (PF) on the AC side is achieved by the interaction of a non-controlled rectifier and two inductors.

Findings

The experimental results show that not only a high-frequency and high-voltage bipolar pulse excitation voltage with a high average rising and falling rate (7.51GV/s) is generated, but also a high PF (0.992) and a low total harmonic distortion (5.54%) is obtained. Besides, the soft-switching of all power switches is realized. Compared with the sinusoidal excitation power supply and the current-source power supply, the proposed power supply in this paper can take advantage of the potential of excimer lamps.

Originality/value

A new high-performance power supply with a compact structure for DBD type excimer lamps is proposed. The proposed power supply can work stably in a wide range of frequencies, and the smooth regulation of the discharge power of the excimer lamp can be achieved by changing the switching frequency. The ideal excitation can be generated, and the soft switching can be realized. These features make this power supply a key player in the outstanding performance of the DBD excimer lamps application.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the current applications of BIM, the integration of related technologies and the tendencies and challenges systematically.

Design/methodology/approach

Using quantitative and qualitative bibliometric statistical methods, the current mode of interaction between BIM and other related technologies is summarized.

Findings

This paper identified 24 different BIM applications in the life cycle. From two perspectives, the implementation status of BIM applications and integrated technologies are respectively studied. The future industry development framework is drawn comprehensively. We summarized the challenges of BIM applications from the perspectives of management, technology and promotion, and confirmed that most of the challenges come from the two driving factors of promotion and management.

Research limitations/implications

The technical challenges reviewed in this paper are from the collected literature we have extracted, which is only a part of the practical challenges and not comprehensive enough.

Practical implications

We summarized the current mode of interactive use of BIM and sorted out the challenges faced by BIM applications to provide reference for the risks and challenges faced by the future industry.

Originality/value

There is little literature to integrate BIM applications and to establish BIM related challenges and risk frameworks. In this paper, we provide a review of the current implementation level of BIM and the risks and challenges of stakeholders through three aspects of management, technology and promotion.

Purpose

This paper highlights the importance of executives taking a timeout to reflect – and to build that habit into their work routines.

Design/methodology/approach

It is based on extensive observation of and discussion with executives.

Findings

Most are so immersed in action and decision‐making that they have no time to think. The paper considers some of the barriers to pragmatic reflection and proposes ways round them – the aim being to help executives practice a new “learning cycle.”

Practical implications

Many executives are deluding themselves that their current mode of operation is sustainable. They must realize that they sometimes need to stop in order to progress.

Originality/value

The more turbulent the context, the higher the need for executives to reassess their priorities and the effort they require, and to develop a fresh perspective. Paradoxically, the less they can afford the time, the more they need to make the investment. Taking time out from the fray has become a matter of survival.
