Abstract

Purpose

Social studies may be taught in relevant and powerful ways regardless of the current barriers and challenges teachers encounter with this subject. While it would be best to give social studies the same importance and time as other subjects, schools today often do not teach social studies or it is taught within an integrated topic. The purpose of this paper is to address current issues regarding integrating social studies in elementary classrooms. The authors then provide one example of an attempt to integrate social studies and mathematics. Finally, the authors conclude with important points to consider while integrating social studies and mathematics using a critical multicultural lens.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors engaged in the social studies and mathematics day to support teacher candidates in their practicum experience. In this study, the authors followed the Action Research paradigm; constantly reflect on the practices while preparing elementary school teachers. The authors understand action research as “a continuous process of inquiry, reflection, and evaluation to understand and improve practice” (Goenaga Ruiz de Zuazu, 2016, p. 8). As teacher educators, the authors particularly focused on self-study research, as indicated by Pine (2009), which can be implemented to improve educators’ own teaching to facilitate personal-professional growth.

Findings

Reflecting on the authors’ experiences and the barriers to teaching social studies, the authors continuously return to discussing the importance of balancing both content areas. In the activities designed by teacher candidates, the authors found they put more emphasis on the mathematics portion, leaving the social studies portion till the end and only if time permitted. In not addressing this situation with them, the authors perpetuated the low status of social studies. The authors needed to permit more time for teacher candidates to allow students to reflect on social and critical issues and promote discussions throughout the lesson, giving social studies equal status to mathematics.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the teacher education literature and how students planned and implemented a social studies and math day.

Abstract

Purpose

The use of mobile devices by children and adolescents is increasing significantly; therefore, it is relevant to research the level of advertising literacy (AL) of parents who act as mediators between children and mobile advertising. This study aims to explore the conceptual, moral and attitudinal dimensions of AL and its relationship with different styles of parental control.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional survey was applied simultaneously to a sample of parents with children between 5 and 16 years old in three Spanish-speaking countries: Mexico, Spain and Colombia. Participants from the three countries were recruited via online social media networks and were asked to fill in an online survey. A questionnaire, which has been adapted from previous literature to suit the mobile advertising context and the population of interest, was designed. Cross-country samples of varying sizes, with a predetermined quota of 200 participants for each country, were used. The total sample consisted of 1,454 participants.

Findings

Four factors of mobile AL were found, which, to a greater extent, correspond to the dimensions of AL proposed in the literature. The following are the dimensions that were identified: cognitive, moral, attitudinal and an emerging factor is known as “children’s perceived mobile AL.” Differences in parents’ perceived knowledge of mobile advertising, parental control styles and AL levels in the three countries were identified. Parents with an authoritative style were identified to have more knowledge than those with an indulgent style. Differences were also identified between countries concerning the amount of exposure that children have to mobile advertising, while no significant differences were found in the moral dimension.

Practical implications

Marketing practitioners and public policymakers must consider that parents differ in some dimensions of AL. Parents also seem to lack adequate knowledge about the advertising tools available to announcers that affect children and adolescents in a mobile communication environment. Therefore, government agencies should consider developing mobile digital media literacy programs for parents.

Originality/value

This paper explores the dimensions of AL applied to the mobile context and identifies the level of parental mobile AL in three Spanish-speaking countries, as well as the differences between these sub-samples concerning parental mobile AL profiles and parental control styles, thus expanding the literature on AL with a cross-cultural approach.

Abstract

Challenge-based learning (CBL) has gained acceptance as a contemporary and progressive teaching pedagogy that provides a holistic and inclusive experience to learners in higher education (HE) institutions. However, its lack of appeal to non-STEM subjects and the need for further development, particularly concerning improved approaches, have been recognized. It seems that CBL runs the risk of becoming a portmanteau pedagogy that blends aspects of problem-based learning, project-based learning, and situated learning, as opposed to its development as an effective pedagogy tool. This points to a lack of a formal implementation framework, code of practice, and standard procedures for its delivery. We argue that blending a design thinking (DT) pedagogy with CBL can potentially provide the stability that CBL currently lacks. At the same time, it also presents a more inclusive proposition to potential non-STEM audiences. Thus, in this chapter, we seek to interrogate the intersectionality between CBL and DT literature in the context of HE teaching and learning with a view of establishing CBL as a pedagogy in its own right. We attempt to achieve this by systematically analyzing the separate literature to reveal the synergies and common touchpoints.

Purpose

Protecting a nation’s heritage is an essential element for sustainable development. Heritage attracts tourism and drives tourist income, as well as bringing wider economic, social and environmental benefits. This study aims to improve understanding of the relationship between heritage protection spending in countries and economic development via tourism revenues via economic logic and the Kuznets curve.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applies economic modelling to test for the presence of a Kuznets curve. This study uses rare available matched data on heritage protection spending from UNESCO and on travel and tourism total contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) from the World Travel and Tourism Council.

Findings

This paper finds evidence of a negative quadratic relationship between heritage protection spending per capita and tourism GDP per capita, whereby increases in heritage spending initially lead to more tourism income (typically less developed nations), but then tourism spending increases more rapidly for smaller increases heritage spending on top of this initial investment (typically more developed nations). No countries are yet at the stage where they reap high tourism income from much lower levels of heritage spending.

Research limitations/implications

The findings suggest that the future of heritage tourism will be very different to that of today; future tourism is likely to develop significantly through innovations in management approach and advanced technologies to manage the balance between demand and heritage degradation.

Practical implications

The predictive model allows us to plot future possibilities for heritage tourism, which in turn enables more informed decision-making regarding the planning and management of future heritage resources and tourism demand. Tourism heritage institutions and their benefactors should further plan and invest in innovations (such as technologies and management practices) to advanced economically and move along the tourism heritage Kuznets curve.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this paper formally tests, for the first time, for the presence of a Kuznets curve in the relationship between heritage protection spending and tourism income. It provides original evidence of the value of applying the underlying theory of the Kuznets curve in a tourism context.

La protección del patrimonio de una nación es un elemento esencial para el desarrollo sostenible. El patrimonio atrae al turismo e impulsa los ingresos turísticos, además de aportar mayores beneficios económicos, sociales y ambientales. Este estudio realiza una contribución original mediante el análisis de la relación entre el gasto en protección del patrimonio en los países y el desarrollo económico a través de los ingresos del turismo basándose en la lógica económica y la curva de Kuznets.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

El estudio aplica modelos económicos para contrastar la presencia de una curva de Kuznets. El estudio utiliza datos combinados disponibles sobre el gasto en protección del patrimonio de la UNESCO y sobre la contribución total de los viajes y el turismo al PIB del Consejo Mundial de Viajes y Turismo.

Resultados

El trabajo evidencia una relación cuadrática negativa entre el gasto en protección del patrimonio per cápita y el PIB turístico per cápita, de forma que inicialmente, los aumentos en el gasto en patrimonio conducen a más ingresos por turismo (generalmente en naciones menos desarrolladas), pero el gasto turístico aumenta más rápidamente ante pequeños aumentos del gasto en patrimonio además de esta inversión inicial (generalmente en naciones más desarrolladas). Ningún país se encuentra en la etapa donde se alcance altos ingresos por turismo a partir de niveles inferiores de gasto en patrimonio.

Originalidad

Este trabajo prueba formalmente, por primera vez, la presencia de una curva de Kuznets en la relación entre el gasto en protección del patrimonio y los ingresos del turismo. Proporciona evidencia original del valor de aplicar la teoría subyacente de la curva de Kuznets en un contexto turístico.

Implicaciones de investigación

Los resultados sugieren que el futuro del turismo patrimonial será muy diferente al de hoy; es probable que el turismo futuro se desarrolle significativamente a través de innovaciones en el enfoque de gestión y tecnologías avanzadas para gestionar el equilibrio entre la demanda y la degradación del patrimonio.

Implicaciones prácticas

El modelo predictivo nos permite trazar las posibilidades futuras para el turismo patrimonial, lo que a su vez permite una toma de decisiones más informada sobre la planificación y gestión de los recursos patrimoniales futuros y la demanda turística. Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to analyze the relationship between tourists' satisfaction and their sense of belonging in a specific cultural destination by also investigating the moderating role of their on-site involvement, both offline (on-site activities at the destination) and online (social media activities). A further objective lies in exploring the relationship between tourists' sense of belonging and their adoption of environmentally responsible behavior while at the destination. Finally, the paper attempts to determine whether said behavior can predict tourists' pro-environmental behavior and recommendation intention.

Design/methodology/approach

To reach these objectives, a survey and a structural equation model, based on a sample of 647 visitors of an important world Heritage site UNESCO (i.e. Urbino), have been adopted.

Findings

Findings reveal a positive influence of sense of belonging on satisfaction and environmentally responsible behavior, which, in turn, influences pro-environmental behavior and Recommendation intention, thus triggering a virtuous process in the tourists' formation as responsible and loyal travelers. Moreover, results underline how the relationship between satisfaction and sense of belonging is significantly strengthened when tourists' on-site activity involvement increases. Conversely, the moderating role of social media involvement is not supported.

Practical implications

The present study offers important implications for different actors in the tourism sector, such as policy makers, destination marketing organizations (DMOs) and tourism operators.

Social implications

The present study explores the role of social media involvement, specifically during the tourist's holiday.

Originality/value

This study enriches the empirical evidence in the cultural tourism through an analysis focused on the tourists' perspective, especially by investigating the relationship between satisfaction and emotional constructs (i.e. sense of belonging) that are able to bring environmental and loyalty benefits to the destination. Moreover, although existing research has highlighted the positive influence of the tourists' involvement on their experience, there is a paucity of studies jointly analyzing the on-site and online activities in the sustainability field.

Purpose

Masked stereolithography (MSLA) or resin three-dimensional (3D) printing is one of the most extensively used high-resolution additive manufacturing technologies. Even though, the quality of 3D printing is determined by several factors, including the equipment, materials and slicer. Besides, the layer height, print orientation and exposure time are important processing parameters in determining the quality of the 3D printed green state specimen. The purpose of the paper is to optimize the printing parameters of the Masked Stereolithography apparatus for its dimensional correctness of 3D printed parts using the Taguchi method.

Design/methodology/approach

The acrylate-based photopolymer resin is used to produce the parts using liquid crystal display (LCD)-type resin 3D printer. This study is mainly focused on optimizing the processing parameters by using Taguchi analysis, L-9 orthogonal array in Minitab software. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to determine the most influencing factors, and a regression equation was built to predict the best potential outcomes for the given set of parameters and levels. The signal-to-noise ratios were calculated by using the smaller the better characteristic as the deviations from the nominal value should be minimum. The optimal levels for each factor were determined with the help of mean plots.

Findings

Based on the findings of ANOVA, it was observed that exposure time plays an important role in most of the output measures. The model’s goodness was tested using a confirmation test and the findings were found to be within the confidence limit. Also, a similar specimen was printed using the fused filament fabrication (FFF) technique; it was compared with the quality and features of MSLA 3D printing technology.

Practical implications

The study presents the statistical analysis of experimental results of MSLA and made a comparison with FFF in terms of dimensional accuracy and print quality.

Originality/value

Many previous studies reported the results based on earlier 3D printing technology such as stereolithography but LCD-based MSLA is not yet reported for its dimensional accuracy and part quality. The presented paper proposes the use of statistical models to optimize the printing parameters to get dimensional accuracy and the good quality of the 3D printed green part.

Purpose

Hundreds of thousands of deaths each year in the world are caused by breast cancer (BC). An early-stage diagnosis of this disease can positively reduce the morbidity and mortality rate by helping to select the most appropriate treatment options, especially by using histological BC images for the diagnosis.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study proposes and evaluates a novel approach which consists of 24 deep hybrid heterogenous ensembles that combine the strength of seven deep learning techniques (DenseNet 201, Inception V3, VGG16, VGG19, Inception-ResNet-V3, MobileNet V2 and ResNet 50) for feature extraction and four well-known classifiers (multi-layer perceptron, support vector machines, K-nearest neighbors and decision tree) by means of hard and weighted voting combination methods for histological classification of BC medical image. Furthermore, the best deep hybrid heterogenous ensembles were compared to the deep stacked ensembles to determine the best strategy to design the deep ensemble methods. The empirical evaluations used four classification performance criteria (accuracy, sensitivity, precision and F1-score), fivefold cross-validation, Scott–Knott (SK) statistical test and Borda count voting method. All empirical evaluations were assessed using four performance measures, including accuracy, precision, recall and F1-score, and were over the histological BreakHis public dataset with four magnification factors (40×, 100×, 200× and 400×). SK statistical test and Borda count were also used to cluster the designed techniques and rank the techniques belonging to the best SK cluster, respectively.

Findings

Results showed that the deep hybrid heterogenous ensembles outperformed both their singles and the deep stacked ensembles and reached the accuracy values of 96.3, 95.6, 96.3 and 94 per cent across the four magnification factors 40×, 100×, 200× and 400×, respectively.

Originality/value

The proposed deep hybrid heterogenous ensembles can be applied for the BC diagnosis to assist pathologists in reducing the missed diagnoses and proposing adequate treatments for the patients.
