Abstract

Purpose

The current longitudinal study explores the determinants of carbon management strategy in an emerging economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on BSE 500 Indian firms for 7 years i.e. from 2016–17 to 2022–23. The appropriate panel regression models have been used to untangle the determinants of carbon management strategy.

Findings

The empirical findings of the study document that gender diversity, environment committee, Environment Management System (EMS) and climate change risks and opportunities play a significant and positive role in the adoption of carbon management strategy. Contrary, board size exerts a significant and negative influence on carbon management strategy adoption.

Practical implications

The study enriches the emerging climate change and carbon management strategy literature.

Social implications

The study provides treasured acumens to regulators, policymakers and managers as the study highlights the role of various determinants in carbon management strategy adoption.

Originality/value

The current research provides novel insights into carbon management strategy literature by unraveling the determinants of carbon management strategy adoption. Further, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, the present study is the first to explore the determinants of carbon management strategy adoption in a developing country context.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to explore how the monitoring and resource provision function of board of directors impact the association between ownership concentration and small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) initial public offering (IPO) underpricing in the context of an emerging economy like India.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample comprises 390 SME IPOs listed on Bombay Stock Exchange SME platform and National Stock Exchange EMERGE (EMERGE is the NSE new initiative for SMEs to raise the funds from investors) in India. To test the moderating impact of the board monitoring role and resource provision role, the study employs hierarchical moderated regression subject to the fulfillment of assumptions.

Findings

The findings divulge that ownership concentration significantly reduces underpricing, hinting towards the operationalization of alignment of interest hypothesis. With regards to moderating relationship, the study found that while board resource providing role negatively moderates the relationship between ownership concentration and SME IPO underpricing, board monitoring function fails to cast any significant impact on the relationship between ownership concentration and SME IPO underpricing.

Research limitations/implications

The present study ignores larger firms listed on the main platform which have complex decision-making than smaller firms. Besides, it is confined to only a single country, i.e. India. Extending the study to other countries with similar institutional characteristics would have validated the findings. Furthermore, the moderating impact of other organizational factors like firm age, lifecycle of firm and change in technology would form an interesting avenue for future research.

Practical implications

The findings of the study have practical implications for managers in designing the adequate board structure that significantly reduces underpricing. It thus further advices the issuers on focusing more on strengthening the resource provision role of board of directors for achieving higher rewards. The findings are helpful to policymakers in framing such policies that enhance the resource-oriented role of board of directors and resource accessibility for SMEs. Furthermore, the results advise the investors to be relatively assured about the SMEs whose board exercises its resource provision role emphatically. Accordingly, findings are helpful to investors in making investment decisions in alternative market settings characterized by the concentrated ownership structure.

Originality/value

The study furthers the debate on the importance of two prominent roles played by board as a moderating variable in the underexplored context of IPO underpricing of small and medium-sized firms in India.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of the study is to shed light on the notion of quality investing in the Indian stock market. The study also attempts to combine the value and quality metrics to test their ability to generate a higher risk-adjusted return.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper employs asset pricing models to examine the excess risk-adjusted returns and panel regression model (random estimates) to determine the price of quality in the cross-section of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) listed stocks from 2003 to 2020.

Findings

The results indicate that the quality-only strategy failed to produce substantial risk-adjusted returns in the Indian stock market. The returns to long/short hedging strategy quality-minus-junk (QMJ) are significantly positive with the majority of the returns attributable to the short leg of the stock portfolio. The findings further discovered that the explanatory effect of quality on prices is limited. In particular, a strategy that combines value and quality investing generated positive and significant alphas as well as a higher Sharpe ratio.

Practical implications

The study provides investors and portfolio managers with valuable insights for navigating undervalued high-quality equities in the Indian stock market.

Originality/value

This is the first research of its kind to examine the performance of quality (Q score indicator) combined with value investing in the Indian stock market. As majority of research have concentrated on developed economies, this study offers out-of-sample evidence to validate the strategy’s success in an emerging market.

Abstract

Purpose

We aim to analyze the capital structure heterogeneity for manufacturing and service sector firms. Additionally, we analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the leverage adjustments of corporate firms.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applies the two-step system generalized method of moments (system-GMM) and panel data of 1,115 manufacturing and 482 service sector firms listed with the Bombay Stock Exchange (S&P BSE) from 2010 to 2023. We developed and analyzed three models. Model 1 analyzes the leverage determinants and speed of adjustment (SOA) for the manufacturing and service sectors. Model 2 evaluates the leverage SOA for various sub-sectors, and Model 3 analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the leverage SOA.

Findings

This study suggests the three following. First, the direction of leverage determinants suggests that manufacturing firms are highly tangible. In contrast, service sector firms are high-growth firms and recorded a higher SOA (12.01%) than manufacturing (9.09%). Second, analyzing the leverage heterogeneity, we found that SOA varies across the sub-sectors. For manufacturing, food and beverage sub-sector recorded the highest SOA (12.58%), while consumer durables reported the lowest (6.38%). Communication recorded the highest (24.15%) for services, while industrial services recorded the lowest (11.18%). Third, firms across sectors and sub-sectors increased their SOA during COVID-19 pandemic.

Research limitations/implications

This in-depth analysis of leverage heterogeneity for different sectors and subsectors will assist policymakers, corporate managers and other stakeholders in making agile financial decisions.

Originality/value

The analysis of leverage heterogeneity for the manufacturing and service sector from the emerging Indian economy marks a novel contribution to existing literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Several studies have examined the relationship between spin-off announcements and stock performance. However, a comparison of the announcement effect of different schemes of spin-offs remains relatively underexplored in the literature. This study aims to find the differential impact of pure scheme and composite schemes of spin-offs on parent company stock performance. A pure scheme includes only the separation of business into independent companies, while a composite scheme includes a simultaneous merger of one of the companies with another company along with separation.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 109 pure and 51 composite spin-off announcements made by Indian listed companies from 2010 to 2023 are examined using event study methodology. The cross-sectional t-test is used to measure the significance of abnormal returns. The t-test for two sample means (right-tailed) is incorporated to test the significance of variations in the stock returns of pure and composite schemes of spin-off announcements. Cross-sectional regression is also done to evaluate the impact of the type of scheme on the spin-off return.

Findings

The study found a cumulative average abnormal return of −1.06% for the pure spin-off and 8.27% for the composite spin-off over a 41-day event window. The univariate analysis revealed that the composite scheme generates a significantly higher cumulative average abnormal return than the pure scheme. Regression analysis also confirmed that the composite scheme significantly positively impacts the stock return. It can be concluded that investors favour the composite scheme, expecting that it will deliver a better strategic fit and generate synergy.

Originality/value

This paper makes a valuable contribution to the existing literature on corporate spin-offs. The study by analysing and comparing how the spin-off and merger combination differently affects the stock performance, helps the investor who wants to capitalize on the market imperfections and the managers to make complex business decisions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the influence of corporate carbon emissions on the financial performance of select Indian companies. It further studies the moderating role of science-based target initiatives (SBTi) in this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on 57 Indian SBTi companies and 74 Bombay Stock Exchange-listed non-SBTi companies for the period of four years from 2019–2020 to 2022–2023. The panel data regression models are used to study this association. Furthermore, two-stage least square and generalized method of moments models are used to test the robustness of the results.

Findings

There is a negative relationship between corporate carbon emissions and financial performance. The findings support the “win-win” hypothesis and confirm that reducing carbon emissions can improve the financial performance of Indian firms. Furthermore, the SBTi moderate the carbon emission and firm performance nexus.

Practical implications

The findings of the study would provide insights to the policymakers, regulators and managers to mainstream climate change in their core business activities driving sustainability and profitable outcomes.

Originality/value

This study is a noble attempt to study the moderating role of science-based targets in the carbon emissions and firm performance nexus in an emerging market setting. Earlier studies have been conducted in a cross-country context.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyse the deployment of mandatory corporate social responsibility (CSR) expenditure incurred by Indian corporate sector, under various development heads as specified by CSR statutes in India.

Design/methodology/approach

The thematic distribution of mandatory CSR expenditure is calculated on a large sample of top 500 Bombay Stock Exchange-listed companies in India over a time span of seven years from 2014 to 2015 till 2020–2021. The money spent on each of the specified stakeholders is extracted from the annual reports of the sampled companies to calculate the average expenditure under each of the development heads.

Findings

The findings indicate that the distribution of CSR expenditure by Indian companies into various development heads is unbalanced. Some of the heads such as “Education”, “Healthcare”, “Development Projects”, “Employment” and “Environment” attract more CSR contributions, whereas some other equally important heads such as “Art & Culture”, “Sports”, “Armed Forces” and “Technology Incubators” have comparatively received much less contributions in all the years of assessment. However, during the times of COVID, Indian companies proactively contributed to combat the virus so much so that “COVID-19 Relief” received all-time high contributions among all the development indicators.

Practical implications

The institutionalised back up has replaced the randomness in stakeholders’ approach followed by Indian companies. To ensure the balanced development of the country, the disproportionate contribution into various development heads in all the years of mandatory CSR era calls for further assessment of CSR guidelines issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MOCA).

Originality/value

This study gives significantly novel insights into the CSR literature by comprehensively analysing the deployment of mandatory CSR funds into various development heads as specified by MOCA in India.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study empirically examines the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and policy uncertainty on stock prices in India during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

To this end, the authors use the daily data by applying the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model, which tests the short- and long-run relationship between stock price and its covariates.

Findings

The study finds that increased uncertainty has adverse short- and long-run effects on stock prices, while the vaccine index has favorable effects on stock market recovery.

Practical implications

From investors' perspectives, volatility in the Indian stock market has negative repercussions. Therefore, to protect investors' sentiments, policymakers should be concerned about the uncertainty induced by the COVID-19 pandemic and similar other uncertainty prevailing in the financial markets.

Originality/value

This study used the news-based COVID-19 index and vaccine index to measure recent pandemic-induced uncertainty. The result carries some policy implications for an emerging economy like India.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines whether household economic status mediates the effect of microcredit on entrepreneurial success amongst women microcredit clients and if this effect is conditional on the borrower’s marital status.

Design/methodology/approach

This cross-sectional study uses primary data collected through a structured questionnaire from microcredit borrowers in Tanzania. The selection of the respondents for the survey involved categorising them based on their loan amount and length of membership in the program and randomly picking them for study participation. To realise the study objective, we used the moderated mediation model and employed the Linear-Based Regression Model 8 of the Hayes PROCESS macro V4.1 for SPSS.

Findings

The findings show that the loan amount and household economic status positively and significantly affect entrepreneurial success. However, the effect of microcredit on entrepreneurial success is mediated by household economic status. On the other hand, the direct and indirect effects of microcredit on entrepreneurial success differ depending on the borrowers' marital status, with married borrowers being negatively affected.

Originality/value

Microfinance supporters suggest that microcredit is vital for enterprise development and other socioeconomic outcomes. However, the results are inconclusive, including the role of household economic status. This study provides empirical insights into the moderated mediation effect of household economic status on the relationship between microcredit and entrepreneurial success. The study’s findings and limitations suggest considering not only microcredit and related factors but also the essential role of family factors in future research and design of microfinance services in efforts to support and grow microcredit-assisted women-owned businesses.

Abstract

Purpose

Recent technological advancements, often linked to Industry 4.0, require organizations to be more agile and innovative. Blockchain technology (BT) holds immense potential in driving organizations to achieve efficiency and transparency in supply chains. However, there exist some insurmountable challenges associated with the adoption of BT in organizational supply chains (SC). This paper attempts to categorically identify and systematize the most influential challenges in the implementation of BT in SC.

Design/methodology/approach

This study resorts to an extensive literature review and consultations with experts in the field of supply chain management (SCM), information technology and academia to identify, categorize and prioritize the major challenges using VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) and Combined Compromise Solution method (CoCoSo).

Findings

The top three classes of challenges revealed in this study are privacy challenges (PC), infrastructure challenges (IC) and transparency challenges (TC). Maintaining a balance between data openness and secrecy and rectification of incorrect/erroneous input are the top two challenges in the PC category, integration of BT with sustainable practices and ensuring legitimacy are the top two challenges in the IC category, and proper and correct information sharing in organizations was the top most challenge in the TC category.

Originality/value

Future scholars and industry professionals will be guided by the importance of the challenges identified in this study to develop an economical and logical approach for integrating BT to increase the efficiency and outcome of supply chains across several industrial sectors.
