Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate, explore, and characterise the perceptions of the Indian private sector employers on the 21st century 4Cs (critical thinking, communication, creativity, and collaboration) skills gap, which affects their productivity.

Need for Study: This research aims to shed light on the significant issue of the soft skills gap, precisely the 4Cs skills in India. Soft skills, including the 4Cs, are complex and crucial for organisations, and the shortage of these skills among the workforce is a growing concern. This research addresses enterprises’ challenges in bridging this gap by exploring different ways to utilise these skills.

Methodology: Fifty-six respondents were interviewed based on cluster sampling. An invitation was sent to 40 private sector organisations from five different industries. Only 15 organisations agreed to participate in the interview process.

Findings: A total of seven were generated from the data, which included: (1) explicit and timely feedback; (2) compassion and understanding; (3) motivation deficiency; (4) lack of collaboration synergies; (5) lack of practical knowledge; (6) interpersonal skills; and (7) creating team culture.

Implication: Given the prevalent skills gap, it is challenging for Indian industries and organisations to remain competitive in the global market. Investing in the education system, providing students with the necessary academic and vocational skills, and equipping them with soft skills, such as the 21st century 4Cs skills is essential to address this issue. Investment is necessary to prepare the workforce to meet the demands of emerging businesses and technologies, ensuring that industries and organisations remain competitive.

Abstract

Purpose

The existing literature on abusive supervision, defined as a perception by subordinates that their supervisor displays hostility toward them (but falling short of physical abuse), is deficient insofar as it fails to account for workgroup differences in employees' perceptions of abusive supervision. We therefore sought to study such differences, which refer to as “abusive supervision dispersion (ASD).”

Methods

We interviewed 40 employees from a variety of organizations in Australia, focusing on the role of affective events in ASD dynamics, with a view to understanding how this phenomenon relates to individual and team processes.

Findings

We found that ASD stimulates employees to harbor negative emotions and resentment toward their supervisor, causing them to perceive even positive events negatively. We found further that, while low ASD facilitates team-member exchange by forcing abused members to band together resulting in low team conflict, high dispersion facilitates formation of subgroups and high team conflict.

Implications

These findings illuminate the paradoxical nature of ASD and suggest that employees experience dispersion through three paradoxes: (1) dispersion paradox, (2) resentment paradox, and (3) team paradox. Overall, these findings suggest that subordinates' perceptions of high ASD are associated with detrimental impacts on team performance.

Purpose of This Chapter:

This perspective seeks to assert that India was (and is) a great civilization and is on its way to further greatness in the year 2047 (the 100th year of India’s independence), provided some challenges are confronted in the earnest – both at the managerial and societal levels.

Design / Methodology / Approach:

The chapter adopts a simplistic review of literature-cum-personal analysis-based approach. Sources ranging from journals and newspapers to websites have been employed to arrive at an informed opinion on the theme.

Findings:

The chapter advocates for concerted action on the fronts of employee welfare, adoption of the latest digital technologies, improving inter- and intra-team communication, upgrading the skills of employees, promoting innovation and employment of women in decent jobs with robust wage and social security structures to tackle the new-age management challenges.

Research Limitations:

In the wake of the absence of empirical research and lack of quantifiable data on the new-age management challenges, it is difficult to ascertain the exact nature of the relationship of the same with Target 2047.

Practical Implications:

The chapter projects certain strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) that are both internal and external to the country’s socioeconomic makeup. The same would assist the new-age managers to be better prepared for upcoming challenges and roadblocks to India’s Goal 2047.

Originality:

This chapter is one of the earliest attempts at linking the seemingly unrelated concepts of new-age management challenges and India’s quest to become a developed country by 2047.

Abstract

Multinational enterprises (MNEs) in the agri-food sector are continuously transforming their global value chains (GVCs) to address sustainable development challenges of food security (SDG2) and climate change (SDG13). However, the central role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in (re)creating GVCs across multilevel stakeholders through innovative approaches to solve sustainability challenges remains under investigated. This explorative study investigates how international NGOs influence the transformation of large-scale industrial animal agriculture to a more sustainable (cell-based) agri-food GVC. The authors conducted a case study on the Good Food Institute (GFI), an international NGO, that has been an active player in the transition to alternative sources of protein to solve animal-based agriculture sustainability issues. The results show that an international NGO can contribute to the transition to a more sustainable GVC and can enhance the GVC’s innovation capabilities.

Purpose

In this closing chapter, we summarize the main themes identified by the chapter authors and draw out exciting new ideas for future research in the field of emotions in organizations.

Study Design/Methodology/Approach

We identify the main themes in the volume, and discuss how authors addressed each of them in their chapters.

Findings

We identified three key themes in this chapter: (1) the key role played by emotional intelligence, despite the ongoing controversy surrounding this construct; (2) the importance and lasting impact of Affective Events Theory; (3) the ongoing impact on the field of the concept of emotional labor.

Origin/Value

The chapters in this volume deal with contemporary issues in the study emotion-related topics in the fields of organizational behavior and organization theory, and help to emphasize the contributions of the scholars working in this field.
