Abstract

Purpose

Understanding the significance of supply chain, demands need of multiple criteria for its performance evaluation. The aim of this paper is to propose an approach to evaluate the performance of supply chain using multiple criteria.

Design/methodology/approach

A multi‐criteria decision making tool, like analytic hierarchy process is used to develop an eight step methodology for performance evaluation. The proposed methodology is also elucidated with an illustration and a case from Indian chemical company.

Findings

Supply chain performance number is computed, suggesting the present performance status of the supply chain. The methodology also helps rank the various links according to its performance. The analysis leads in computation of supply chain performance number (SCPN): the value lies between 0 and 1.

Research limitations/implications

The methodology can be suitably modified to accommodate any number of criteria and supply links, given the structure of the supply chain.

Practical implications

A case from an Indian chemical industry is presented in this paper. The findings of which, are encouraging and have benefited the practicing mangers in various ways.

Originality/value

This paper presents a unique approach for supply chain performance evaluation considering multiple criteria, with a flexibility to modify and analyze using the available data sets.

Abstract

One of the particular problems facing agribusiness firms is the relationship between commodity price risk (a source of business risk) and debt repayment ability (a source of financial risk). This study examines the use of commodity‐linked loans applied to agricultural credits. A commodity‐linked loan is a credit instrument whose payoff is contingent on the value of an underlying commodity or portfolio of commodities. The payoff structure includes an option (call or put) rider that provides a payoff if the commodity price rises above or drops below a preset strike price. The payoff is applied directly to the loan. This study introduces the general concept, reviews the literature, and develops and applies a particular model. Simulation results illustrate the interrelationship between options payoffs, strike prices, volatility, and downside financial risk reduction.

Abstract

Encapsulates the debate on the topics of confusion in consumption and the return of community. Starting with an ethnosociological analysis structuring the passage from modernity to postmodernity around the metamorphosis of the social link, aims at clarifying and explaining the different levels of the postmodern confusion in consumption. Modernity entered history as a progressive force promising to liberate humankind from everyday obligations and traditional bonds. As a consequence, modern consumption emphasized essentially the utilitarian value (“use value”) of products and services. Postmodernity, on the contrary, can be said to crown not the triumph of individualism, but the beginning of its end with the emergence of a reverse movement of a desperate search for community. With the neo‐tribalism distinguishing postmodernity, everyday life seems to mark out the importance of a forgotten element: the social link. Consequently, postmodern consumption appears to emphasize the “linking value” of products and services. Concludes with an exploration of the implications of postmodernity for rethinking marketing with the integration of the linking value concept.

Abstract

Most research issues in strategic management are essentially problem focused. To one extent or another, these problems often span levels of analysis, may align with different performance metrics, and likely hold different implications from various theoretical perspectives. Despite these variations, research has generally approached questions by taking a single perspective or by contrasting one perspective with a single alternative rather than exploring integrative implications. As such, very few efforts have sought to consider the performance implications of using combined, integrated, or multi-level perspectives. Given this reality, what actually constitutes “good” performance, how performance is effectively measured, and how performance measures align with different perspectives remain thorny problems in strategic management research. This paper discusses potential extensions by which strategic management research and theory might begin to address these conflicts. We first consider the multi-level nature of strategic management phenomena, focusing in particular on competitive advantage and value creation as core concepts. We next present three approaches in which strategic management theories tend to link levels of analysis (transaction, management, and atmosphere). We then examine the implications arising from these multi-level approaches and conclude with suggestions for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to apply link prediction to community mining and to clarify the role of link prediction in improving the performance of social network analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the 2009 version of Enron e-mail data set provided by Carnegie Mellon University was selected as the research object first, and bibliometric analysis method and citation analysis method were adopted to compare the differences between various studies. Second, based on the impact of various interpersonal relationships, the link model was adopted to analyze the relationship among people. Finally, the factorization of the matrix was further adopted to obtain the characteristics of the research object, so as to predict the unknown relationship.

Findings

The experimental results show that the prediction results obtained by considering multiple relationships are more accurate than those obtained by considering only one relationship.

Research limitations/implications

Due to the limited number of objects in the data set, the link prediction method has not been tested on the large-scale data set, and the validity and correctness of the method need to be further verified with larger data. In addition, the research on algorithm complexity and algorithm optimization, including the storage of sparse matrix, also need to be further studied. At the same time, in the case of extremely sparse data, the accuracy of the link prediction method will decline a lot, and further research and discussion should be carried out on the sparse data.

Practical implications

The focus of this research is on link prediction in social network analysis. The traditional prediction model is based on a certain relationship between the objects to predict and analyze, but in real life, the relationship between people is diverse, and different relationships are interactive. Therefore, in this study, the graph model is used to express different kinds of relations, and the influence between different kinds of relations is considered in the actual prediction process. Finally, experiments on real data sets prove the effectiveness and accuracy of this method. In addition, link prediction, as an important part of social network analysis, is also of great significance for other applications of social network analysis. This study attempts to prove that link prediction is helpful to the improvement of performance analysis of social network by applying link prediction to community mining.

Originality/value

This study adopts a variety of methods, such as link prediction, data mining, literature analysis and citation analysis. The research direction is relatively new, and the experimental results obtained have a certain degree of credibility, which is of certain reference value for the following related research.

Abstract

Models of value creation that have been proposed for supporting value-based management are described and analyzed, including the Balanced Scorecard, the Baldrige Quality Award Criteria, the Deming Management Method, the Service-Profit Chain, and the Skandia Intellectual Capital Model. These models are compared, their potential for guiding the identification of value drivers and performance measures for value-based management is assessed, and management issues that must be addressed if such models are to contribute to long-run value creation are explored. These issues include causally linking value drivers to each other and to financial outcomes, the extent to which the models take a dynamic, or whole-system, view of value creation, and whether multiple value drivers should be explicitly weighted and combined to form a “value index.” Finally, the substantial body of research evidence linking intangible value drivers to financial outcomes is reviewed, and some directions for further research are offered.

Abstract

Examines the relationships between cultural values and preferences for human resource management (HRM) policies and practices in a sample of Taiwanese employees. Specifically, seeks to examine patterns of Chinese national culture in Taiwan, to identify the preferences of employees for specific HRM policies and practices, and to explore the extent to which individual cultural value orientations shape individual preferences for HRM policies and practices. Presents findings from data based on 452 employees from the shopfloor to senior management positions in seven Taiwanese organisations. By controlling the measure of national culture in terms of value orientations, it is found that they account for from only 5 per cent to 10 per cent of the total individual variance in HRM preference. A factor analysis supports the view that national culture value orientations represent a separate construct to both work values and more traditional measures of work outcomes, such as job satisfaction and commitment.

Examines the subject “How can we study value systems from a systemic angle of incidence?”, based on the philosophy developed by Bunge through his treatise on basic philosophy. Develops a conceptual model for the value system, consisting of the following entities: wellbeing, needs and wishes, values, moral codes and action. Discusses each element of the model from a systemic angle of incidence. The ethical norm expressed is referred to as systemic principle of balance and can be expressed in the following way: the wellbeing of those most subject to suffering in the social system should be given number one priority, despite the fact that wellbeing of the majority will deteriorate as a result of this priority.
