Abstract

This chapter assesses the economic security of enterprises on the example of the textile industry of Uzbekistan. The authors considered the ways to identify new textile enterprises in Uzbekistan and studied the issues related to the enterprises' financial security. The process of index formation and its dependence on the initial data is also of interest. Given that the level of receivables turnover is gradually decreasing, we can assume that the company's customers will accumulate late payments and return them near the end of the financial year. This situation can increase liquidity indicators, which shows the low efficiency of the system for managing accounts with customers and the lack of working money during the financial year. This hypothesis is also confirmed by the decrease in the capital ratio during the period analyzed. The proposed methodology was tested in the automated Microsoft Excel, which made it possible to quickly and efficiently form the final calculated indicator. In addition, this methodology allows users to expand the range of inputs and double-check other factors depending on market conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary objective of this research is to determine critical success factors (CSFs) that enable textile enterprises to effectively implement Kaizen, a Japanese concept of continuous development, particularly during disruptive situations. The study aims to provide insights into how Kaizen is specifically employed within the textile sector and to offer guidance for addressing future crises.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs a structured approach to determine CSFs for successful Kaizen implementation in the textile industry. The Triple Helix Actors structure, comprising business, academia and government representatives, is utilized to uncover essential insights. Additionally, the Matriced Impacts Croises-Multiplication Applique and Classement (MICMAC) analysis and interpretative structural modeling (ISM) techniques are applied to evaluate the influence of CSFs.

Findings

The research identifies 17 CSFs for successful Kaizen implementation in the textile industry through a comprehensive literature review and expert input. These factors are organized into a hierarchical structure with 5 distinct levels. Additionally, the application of the MICMAC analysis reveals three clusters of CSFs: linkage, dependent and independent, highlighting their interdependencies and impact.

Originality/value

Major contribution of this study is understanding how Kaizen can be effectively utilized in the textile industry, especially during disruptive events. The combination of the Triple Helix Actors structure, MICMAC analysis and ISM provides a unique perspective on the essential factors driving successful Kaizen implementation. The identification of CSFs and their categorization into clusters offer valuable insights for practitioners, policymakers and academia seeking to enhance the resilience and sustainability of the textile industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to reveal whether green perceived organizational support has a mediating role in the relationship between managers’ green transformational leadership and the green self-efficacy beliefs of employees.

Design/methodology/approach

The textile industry is a sector with fast and cheap production and is the second most damaging sector to the environment due to excessive consumption and rapidly changing fashion trends. Hence, textile industry employees were selected as the research object. The data were collected by survey method from 274 people working in businesses operating in the textile sector in Türkiye. The collected data were analyzed in the SmartPLS 4 analysis program.

Findings

The analysis found that managers’ green transformational leadership increases employees’ green self-efficacy beliefs. Likewise, it was determined that managers’ green transformational leadership increases employees’ green perceived organizational support. The analysis also indicated that employees’ green perceived organizational support increases employees’ green self-efficacy beliefs. Finally, as a result of the analysis, it was concluded that green perceived organizational support is a complementary partial mediator variable in the relationship between managers’ green transformational leadership and employees’ green self-efficacy beliefs.

Originality/value

The available literature has overlooked the mediating role of green perceived organizational support in the relationship between managers’ green transformational leadership and the green self-efficacy beliefs of employees. This work makes new contributions to the literature and practice by revealing the significance of managers’ green transformational leadership and green perceived organizational support in increasing employees’ green self-efficacy beliefs.

Abstract

The research aims to identify the importance of the Republic of Türkiye in the global textile market. The research methodology is based on basic methods of scientific cognition, such as analysis, synthesis, deduction, and induction. From the particular methods used, it is worth highlighting the applicable comparison method. During the research, the authors carried out a content analysis, mainly of scientific works by Turkish scientists and news from the Turkish media. The research object is the global textile industry market. Nowadays, Türkiye faces damaged industrial buildings and an acute labor shortage. The country will need to spend a lot of time and efforts to restore its former production capacity in economically important regions, which will affect the country's export potential. COVID-19 has greatly affected the state of various sectors of the economy; the global textile market is no exception. Unlike other sectors of the economy, the global textile market recovered quickly; by 2021, it had regained its production capacity. In turn, Türkiye was even able to exceed its exports and increase its role in the world market. The country did not have time to reach new heights: on February 6, 2023, several powerful earthquakes occurred in economically important provinces of Türkiye. Most of them are provinces of the expensive the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) project, where 60% of the cotton of all Türkiye is produced, and the population mainly works in the textile industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a decision-making protocol to meet the new requirements in an atypical panorama, such as the economic instability, in the textile industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology consists of analyzing technical criteria, costing parameters and efficiency scores of knitted fabrics using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) and classification and regression (C&R) trees models, together with statistical techniques. From these tools, it is possible to guide the portfolio management of these products in a textile company, identifying those that are inefficient and require immediate management measures. The results are expected to be replicated in other companies because the DEA and C&R trees analytical procedures are applicable to different portfolios, whether in the same industry or not.

Findings

The results allowed identifying inefficient textile products regarding the input-output relationship and the main technical reasons related to the most significant inefficiencies, such as fiber composition and knitted fabrics rapports used in manufacturing.

Originality/value

DEA and C&R trees, in combination with the study of textile technical parameters, can be fundamental to investigating the efficiency and profitability of industries in periods of economic instability or other adverse situations. In addition, it is noteworthy that there are practically no studies in the literature on DEA applied in the textile industry, indicating excellent development potential.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to analyze the literature on Lean Management and Lean Six Sigma (LM/LSS) in local government organizations (LGOs).

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted to extract the most relevant academic publications on LM/LSS in LGOs. ProQuest, Web of Science and Engineering Village were used to obtain the publication set. Studies were then analyzed based on author characteristics, research design characteristics and content characteristics.

Findings

The SLR yielded 53 academic publications. The primary finding is that this research area has recently received an increase in attention within these types of organizations. While this research area attracts new scholars every year, there remains insufficient collaboration across different research groups. Research methods, outcomes and future research areas were also investigated to comprehensively evaluate the literature and specify new research opportunities.

Research limitations/implications

Although the SLR is a rigorous research methodology used to gather relevant publications, it is limited to the chosen information sources (i.e. platforms) to obtain the publications. Therefore, the researchers used multiple sources to maximize the likelihood of capturing publications related to this topic.

Practical implications

The insights presented here provide a foundational reference for researchers interested in investigating and exploring future research opportunities associated with LM/LSS in LGOs.

Originality/value

This study adds value to the research community through its detailed characterization and analysis of the existing research literature on LM/LSS within LGOs, an area that remains largely unexplored in the academic literature. By providing a rigorous understanding of the current status of this research area, this work responds to a notable gap. The review of the existing literature suggests that this effort represents the first comprehensive examination of the research literature on the evolution of LM/LSS, specifically focusing on LGOs as the primary application unit of interest.

Case overview/synopsis

In 2018, Nutan Jha embarked on a remarkable journey by establishing Nutan Creations, a micro-enterprise situated in Kharrak village, Jhanjharpur, Bihar (India). This case study aims to achieve multiple objectives: understanding the operational obstacles confronted by a rural woman entrepreneur, acknowledging the inseparable connection between business and social issues in rural contexts, moreover shedding light on the intersection of gender, entrepreneurship and cultural preservation through traditional Madhubani painting art form products. This distinctive combination brings a fresh perspective to the research, offering unique insights into the challenges and triumphs experienced by rural women entrepreneurs. Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the export competitiveness of Bangladesh's apparel industry by identifying the specific product categories that help sustain its export comparative advantage.

Design/methodology/approach

Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) and market share (MS) are calculated between 2011 and 2020 at the two- and four-digit level apparel product categories within the harmonized system (HS) to analyze the industry’s growth and export dominance. Trade competitiveness (TC) at the four-digit level, revealed comparative advantage (RCA) and normalized revealed comparative advantage (NRCA) at the two-, four- and six-digit-level apparel product categories are computed for the same 10-year period to investigate the industry’s export competitiveness. Major export destinations of the top 5 exporting product categories are identified to understand the factors facilitating the industry’s growth. A non-parametric Spearman rank correlation analysis evaluated the association between the RCA and NRCA indices.

Findings

Among the 34 product categories at the four-digit level, 29 consistently demonstrated an export comparative advantage, as did 34 out of 217 six-digit level sub-categories. In contrast, 12 sub-categories at the six-digit level consistently exhibited a comparative disadvantage in Bangladesh's export competitiveness. Furthermore, the TC measure identified 28 categories at the four-digit level with a robust comparative advantage. 30 categories displayed a positive CAGR, and Bangladesh asserted significant market dominance over 26 product categories at the four-digit level.

Research limitations/implications

This study's implications are significant for various stakeholders in Bangladesh and other apparel-exporting industries, encompassing government entities, industry officials, policymakers, investors, researchers and students. Nevertheless, limitations arise from the study's reliance on RCA and NRCA as competitiveness indicators, particularly its adoption of a macro-level approach for measurement without exploring a micro-level perspective. This constitutes a notable constraint in the study's analytical framework.

Originality/value

This study contributed novelty and enrichment to the existing academic literature by identifying distinct apparel product categories that contribute to the industry's growth.

Abstract

Purpose

This study utilizes social exchange theory to investigate the relationship between green intellectual capital and employee environmental citizenship behavior through serial mediation of organizational agility and employee green creativity.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a multi-level and multi-wave dataset of 425 employees and 70 managers nested within 35 manufacturing firms. The authors followed a 2-2-1-1 research framework in which organizational green intellectual capital (a level 2 variable) influenced employee environmental citizenship behavior (a level 1 outcome variable), which was then mediated by organizational agility (a level 2 variable) and employee green creativity (a level 1 variable). This study used Jamovi for hypotheses testing.

Findings

The findings suggest a positive relationship between green intellectual capital and organizational agility, leading positively to employee environmental citizenship behavior and employee green creativity. It indicates that green intellectual capital positively relates to employee environmental citizenship behavior via serial mediation effects of organizational agility and employee green creativity.

Practical implications

This study provides valuable insights for manufacturing firms and policymakers. The study encourages environmental conservation and restoration efforts by individuals and organizations, supporting initiatives to protect the environment. Findings may help manufacturing firms and policymakers towards mitigating environmental harm to achieve their sustainability objectives.

Originality/value

This study enhances our understanding of the link between green intellectual capital and employee environmental citizenship behavior through indirect path of organizational agility and employee green creativity.
