Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to further explore the co-citation and bibliographic-coupling relationship among the core authors in the field of Chinese information science (IS), to expose research activity and author impact, and to make induction analyses about Chinese IS research patterns and theme evolution.

Design/methodology/approach

The research data include 8,567 papers and 70,947 cited articles in the IS field indexed by Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index from 2000 to 2009. Author co-citation analysis, author bibliographic-coupling analysis, social network analysis, and factor analysis were combined to explore co-citation and bibliographic-coupling relationships and to identify research groups and subjects.

Findings

Scholars with greatest impact are different from the most active scholars of Chinese IS; there is no uniform impact pattern forming since authors’ impact subjects are scattered and not steady; while authors’ research activities present higher independence and concentration, there is still no steady research pattern due to no deep research existing. Furthermore, Chinese IS studies can be delineated by: foundation or extension. The research subjects of these two parts, as well as their corresponding/contributing authors, are different under different views. The general research status of core authors is concentrated, while their impact is broad.

Originality/value

The combined use of some related methods could enrich the development and methodology research of the discipline, and the results establish a reference point on the development of IS research.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a novel statistic energy analysis method with fuzzy parameters to study the dynamic and acoustic responses of coupled system with fuzzy parameters, which can expand the applied range of statistic energy analysis method in engineering to some extent.

Design/methodology/approach

On the basis of the property of membership level, the uncertain fuzzy parameters are expressed as the interval forms. Interval mathematics and interval expansion principle are adopted to solve the problem with interval parameters. At last, two numerical examples, which include a two-plate coupled system and a single-partition sound-insulation system, are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the presented method.

Findings

Interval mathematics and interval expansion principle are adopted to solve the problem with interval parameters.

Originality/value

By integrating the interval analysis, optimization technique and Taylor expansion method, two non-probabilistic, set-theoretical statistical energy analyses are proposed for predicting the dynamical and acoustical response of the complex coupled system with uncertain parameters in high-frequency domain.

Abstract

Purpose

Dyadic interactions are significant for human life. Most body sensor networks-based research studies focus on daily actions, but few works have been done to recognize affective actions during interactions. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and recognize affective actions collected from dyadic interactions.

Design/methodology/approach

A framework that combines hidden Markov models (HMMs) and k-nearest neighbor (kNN) using Fisher kernel learning is presented in this paper. Furthermore, different features are considered according to the interaction situations (positive situation and negative situation).

Findings

Three experiments are conducted in this paper. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed Fisher kernel learning-based framework outperforms methods using Fisher kernel-based approach, using only HMMs and kNN.

Practical implications

The research may help to facilitate nonverbal communication. Moreover, it is important to equip social robots and animated agents with affective communication abilities.

Originality/value

The presented framework may gain strengths from both generative and discriminative models. Further, different features are considered based on the interaction situations.

Abstract

Purpose

Considering that uncertain factors widely exist in engineering practice, an adaptive collocation method (ACM) is developed for the structural fuzzy uncertainty analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

ACM arranges points in the axis of the membership adaptively. Through the adaptive collocation procedure, ACM can arrange more points in the axis of the membership where the membership function changes sharply and fewer points in the axis of the membership where the membership function changes slowly. At each point arranged in the axis of the membership, the level-cut strategy is used to obtain the cut-level interval of the uncertain variables; besides, the vertex method and the Chebyshev interval uncertainty analysis method are used to conduct the cut-level interval uncertainty analysis.

Findings

The proposed ACM has a high accuracy without too much additional computational efforts.

Originality/value

A novel ACM is developed for the structural fuzzy uncertainty analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the stability analysis and optical solitary wave solutions of a (2 + 1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which are derived from a multicomponent plasma with nonextensive distribution.

Design Methodology Approach

Based on the ansatz and sub-equation theories, the authors use a direct method to find stability analysis and optical solitary wave solutions of the (2 + 1)-dimensional equation.

Findings

By considering the ansatz method, the authors successfully construct the bright and dark soliton solutions of the equation. The sub-equation method is also extended to find its complexitons solutions. Moreover, the explicit power series solution is also derived with its convergence analysis. Finally, the influences of each parameter on these solutions are discussed via graphical analysis.

Originality Value

The dynamics of these solutions are analyzed to enrich the diversity of the dynamics of high-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation type nonlinear wave fields.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigated the mediating role of job satisfaction and the moderating role of career growth opportunity in the relationship between public service motivation (PSM) and public employees' turnover intention.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors recruited 587 public employees from Yunnan Province, China to test moderation and mediation hypotheses. The authors conducted confirmatory factor analysis to determine the discriminant and convergent validity of the measures of PSM, turnover intention, job satisfaction and career growth opportunity. Finally, the authors carried out bootstrapping to ascertain direct, indirect and conditional indirect effects.

Findings

PSM had a negative effect on public employees' turnover intention, but this relationship was partially mediated by job satisfaction. Career growth opportunity moderated the association between job satisfaction and turnover intention. In particular, the indirect effect of PSM on turnover intention through job satisfaction weakened under high career growth opportunities.

Practical implications

The results highlighted the significance of PSM and career growth opportunity in shaping public employees' work-related attitudes and behaviors. Public organizations should consider PSM a key criterion in recruitment and selection and pay more attention to the significance of intervening in career growth to satisfy public employees' psychological needs related to individual career development.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on the disputed link between PSM and turnover intention and uncovered the underlying mechanism through which PSM affects public employees' turnover intention by proposing job satisfaction and career growth opportunity as a mediator and moderator, respectively.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the numerical fluid-structure interaction (FSI) framework for the simulations of mechanical behavior of new vortex generators (VGs) in smooth wavy fin-and-elliptical tube (SWFET) heat exchanger using the ANSYS MFX Multi-field® solver.

Design/methodology/approach

A three-dimensional FSI approach is proposed in this paper to provide better understanding of the performance of the VG structures in SWFET heat exchangers associated with the alloy material properties and geometric factors. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model are applied for modeling of the turbulent flow in SWFET heat exchanger and the linear elastic Cauchy-Navier model is solved for the structural von Mises stress and elastic strain analysis in the VGs region.

Findings

Parametric studies conducted in the course of this research successfully identified illustrate that the maximum magnitude of von Mises stress and elastic strain occurs at the root of the VGs and depends on geometrical parameters and material types. These results reveal that the titanium alloy VGs shows a slightly higher strength and lower elastic strain compared to the aluminum alloy VGs.

Originality/value

This paper is one of the first in the literature that provides original information mechanical behavior of a SWFET heat exchanger model with new VGs in the field of FSI coupling technique.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the less mature homeschooling ecosystem in China, together with the similarity of purpose, the current study examined the lived experiences of curricular choice making in the USA and China and categories of respective families (homeschools), as a way of understanding curricular flexibility. In addressing these features, based on an updated model of curricular flexibility as it applies to homeschooling, the authors examined the aspects of who, what, when, where and how to see if this context offers new light. The authors then consider ways in which the model can be further updated for greater analytical clarity and accuracy. The purpose of this paper is to address these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

A descriptive case study was conducted in the Xi'an city of China and the Seattle metropolitan area of the USA. A survey and two rounds of semi-structured interview data were collected from ten homeschooling families in both contexts.

Findings

The study found families’ adjusted curricula for different motives, as they navigated differing societal contexts, and curricular flexibility in homeschooling contexts was theorized as standardization and structuring strategies and social dimensions, and family preference patterns were identified. Chinese homeschooling families had comparatively less variety of available resources and freedom to homeschools compared to American counterparts, and they operated with the awareness of a standard national curriculum and its social implications.

Originality/value

This study elaborates on a little-discussed topic – the overall curriculum of each homeschool and motives influencing changing curricular choices during the process of homeschooling. And it is the first paper to use the model to explicitly define curricular flexibility in the homeschooling context, thus extending the existing theoretical discussion of curricular flexibility.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide the performance comparison between the conventional mixing ventilation (MV) and the displacement ventilation (DV) with and without cooling ceiling, which can be helpful to design.

Design/methodology/approach

The commercial CFD software FLUENT with RNG kε turbulent model was used. The CFD method was validated via comparing with the available experimental data.

Findings

It was found that if properly designed, the DV system can supply better indoor air quality in the occupied zone, including better distribution in temperature field, higher ventilation efficiency, lower contaminant field and more thermal comfort compared with the MV system, because of the stratification effect of DV. And the locations of return air outlets have a great effect on the performance of the ventilation system. It was also found that the DV systems can be used to remove air contaminations more efficiently, but the temperature difference in the occupied zone in the DV system is higher than that in the MV system, especially if the heat load is higher. This problem may be solved if the cooled ceiling is combined with the DV, because the vertical temperature in the occupied zone will be reduced and more thermal comfort can be achieved.

Research limitations/implications

More detailed computation should be performed on the thermal radiation between different surfaces in the room.

Practical implications

A very useful source of information for thermal designing of air condition.

Originality/value

This paper provides the performance comparison between the conventional MV and the DV with and without cooling ceiling, based on flow and temperature distribution.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the influences of the uncertain dynamic responses on the reconstruction of loads.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the assumption of unknown-but-bounded (UBB) noise, a time-domain approach to estimate the uncertain time-dependent external loads is presented by combining the inverse system method in modern control theory and interval analysis in interval mathematics. Inspired by the concept of set membership identification in control theory, an interval analysis model of external loads time history, which is indeed a region or feasible set containing all possible loads being consistent with the bounded structural acceleration responses is established and further solved by two interval algorithms.

Findings

Unlike traditional loads identification methods which only give a point estimation, an interval estimation of external loads time history, which is a region containing all the possible loads being consistent with the uncertain structural responses, is determined. The correlation characteristics among the responses of acceleration, velocity, and displacement are also discussed in consideration of the UBB uncertainty.

Originality/value

For one hand, the solution of the inverse problem in original system is transformed to the solution of the direct problem in inverse system; for another, the authors deal with the uncertainty by use of interval analysis method, and the identified interval process, which contains any possible external loads time history being consistent with the bounded structural responses can be approximately obtained.
