Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the influences of the uncertain dynamic responses on the reconstruction of loads.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the assumption of unknown-but-bounded (UBB) noise, a time-domain approach to estimate the uncertain time-dependent external loads is presented by combining the inverse system method in modern control theory and interval analysis in interval mathematics. Inspired by the concept of set membership identification in control theory, an interval analysis model of external loads time history, which is indeed a region or feasible set containing all possible loads being consistent with the bounded structural acceleration responses is established and further solved by two interval algorithms.

Findings

Unlike traditional loads identification methods which only give a point estimation, an interval estimation of external loads time history, which is a region containing all the possible loads being consistent with the uncertain structural responses, is determined. The correlation characteristics among the responses of acceleration, velocity, and displacement are also discussed in consideration of the UBB uncertainty.

Originality/value

For one hand, the solution of the inverse problem in original system is transformed to the solution of the direct problem in inverse system; for another, the authors deal with the uncertainty by use of interval analysis method, and the identified interval process, which contains any possible external loads time history being consistent with the bounded structural responses can be approximately obtained.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel non-probabilistic reliability-based topology optimization (NRBTO) method for continuum structural design under interval uncertainties of load and material parameters based on the technology of 3D printing or additive manufacturing.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the uncertainty quantification analysis is accomplished by interval Taylor extension to determine boundary rules of concerned displacement responses. Based on the interval interference theory, a novel reliability index, named as the optimization feature distance, is then introduced to construct non-probabilistic reliability constraints. To circumvent convergence difficulties in solving large-scale variable optimization problems, the gradient-based method of moving asymptotes is also used, in which the sensitivity expressions of the present reliability measurements with respect to design variables are deduced by combination of the adjoint vector scheme and interval mathematics.

Findings

The main findings of this paper should lie in that new non-probabilistic reliability index, i.e. the optimization feature distance which is defined and further incorporated in continuum topology optimization issues. Besides, a novel concurrent design strategy under consideration of macro-micro integration is presented by using the developed RBTO methodology.

Originality/value

Uncertainty propagation analysis based on the interval Taylor extension method is conducted. Novel reliability index of the optimization feature distance is defined. Expressions of the adjoint vectors between interval bounds of displacement responses and the relative density are deduced. New NRBTO method subjected to continuum structures is developed and further solved by MMA algorithms.

Abstract

Purpose

Uncertainty is ubiquitous in practical engineering and scientific research. The uncertainties in parameters can be treated as interval numbers. The prediction of upper and lower bounds of the response of a system including uncertain parameters is of immense significance in uncertainty analysis. This paper aims to evaluate the upper and lower bounds of electric potentials in an electrostatic system efficiently with interval parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

The Taylor series expansion is proposed for evaluating the upper and lower bounds of electric potentials in an electrostatic system with interval parameters. The uncertain parameters of the electrostatic system are represented by interval notations. By performing Taylor series expansion on the electric potentials obtained using the equilibrium governing equation and by using the properties of interval mathematics, the upper and lower bounds of the electric potentials of an electrostatic system can be calculated.

Findings

To evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method, the upper and lower bounds of the electric potentials and the computation time of the proposed method are compared with those obtained using the Monte Carlo simulation, which is referred to as a reference solution. Numerical examples illustrate that the bounds of electric potentials of this method are consistent with those obtained using the Monte Carlo simulation. Moreover, the proposed method is significantly more time-saving.

Originality/value

This paper provides a rapid computational method to estimate the upper and lower bounds of electric potentials in electrostatics analysis with interval parameters. The precision of the proposed method is acceptable for engineering applications, and the computation time of the proposed method is significantly less than that of the Monte Carlo simulation, which is the most widely used method related to uncertainties. The Monte Carlo simulation requires a large number of samplings, and this leads to significant runtime consumption.

This study aims to propose an improved affine interval truncation algorithm to restrain interval extension for interval function.

Design/methodology/approach

To reduce the occurrence times of related variables in interval function, the processing method of interval operation sequence is proposed.

Findings

The interval variable is evenly divided into several subintervals based on correlation analysis of interval variables. The interval function value is modified by the interval truncation method to restrain larger estimation of interval operation results.

Originality/value

Through several uncertain displacement response engineering examples, the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed algorithm are verified by comparing with interval method and optimization algorithm.

Abstract

Purpose

Many analysis and design problems in engineering and science involve uncertainty to varying degrees. This paper is concerned with the structural vibration problem involving uncertain material or geometric parameters, specified as fuzzy parameters. The requirement is to propagate the parameter uncertainty to the eigenvalues of the structure, specified as fuzzy eigenvalues. However, the usual approach is to transform the fuzzy problem into several interval eigenvalue problems by using the α-cuts method. Solving the interval problem as a generalized interval eigenvalue problem in interval mathematics will produce conservative bounds on the eigenvalues. The purpose of this paper is to investigate strategies to efficiently solve the fuzzy eigenvalue problem.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the fundamental perturbation principle and vertex theory, an efficient perturbation method is proposed, that gives the exact extrema of the first-order deviation of the structural eigenvalue. The fuzzy eigenvalue approach has also been improved by reusing the interval analysis results from previous α-cuts.

Findings

The proposed method was demonstrated on a simple cantilever beam with a pinned support, and produced very accurate fuzzy eigenvalues. The approach was also demonstrated on the model of a highway bridge with a large number of degrees of freedom.

Originality/value

This proposed Vertex-Perturbation method is more efficient than the standard perturbation method, and more general than interval arithmetic methods requiring the non-negative decomposition of the mass and stiffness matrices. The new increment method produces highly accurate solutions, even when the membership function for the fuzzy eigenvalues is complex.

Purpose

Overhead high-voltage transmission line (HVTL) inspection robots are used to inspect the transmission lines and/or maintain the infrastructures of a power transmission grid. One of the most serious problems is that the load on the front wheel is much larger than that on the back one when the robot travels along a sloping earth wire. Thus, ongoing operation of the inspection robot mainly depends on the front wheel motor’s ability. This paper aims to extend continuous operation time of the HVTL inspection robots.

Design/methodology/approach

By introducing a traction force model, the authors have established a dynamic model of the robot with slip. The total load is evenly distributed to both wheels. According to the traction force model, the desired wheel slip is calculated to achieve the goal of load balance. A wheel slip controller was designed based on second-order sliding-mode control methodology.

Findings

This controller accomplishes the control objective, such that the actual wheel slip tracks the desired wheel slip. A simulation and experiment verify the feasibility of the load balance control system. These results indicate that the loads on both wheels are generally equal.

Originality/value

By balancing the loads on both wheels, the inspection robot can travel along the earth wire longer, improving its efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

Vibration of large membranes has great utility in engineering application such as in important parts of drums, pumps, microphones, telephones and other devices. So, to obtain a numerical solution of this type of problems is necessary and important. In general, in existing approaches, involved parameters and variables are defined exactly. Whereas in actual practice, it may contain uncertainty owing to error in observations, maintenance-induced error, etc. So, the main purpose of this paper is to solve this important problem numerically under fuzzy and interval uncertainty to have an uncertain solution and to study its behaviour.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the authors have considered a new approach is known as double parametric form of fuzzy number to model uncertain parameters. Along with this a semianalytical approach, i.e. variational iteration method, has been used to obtain uncertain bounds of the solution.

Findings

The variational iteration method has been successfully implemented along with the double parametric form of fuzzy number to find the uncertain solution of the vibration equation of a large membrane. The advantage of this approach is that the solution can be written in a power series or a compact form. Also, this method converges rapidly to obtain an accurate solution. Various cases depending on the functional value involved in the initial conditions have been studied and the behaviour has been analysed. Applying the double parametric form reduces the computational cost without separating the fuzzy equation into coupled differential equations as done in traditional approaches.

Originality/value

The vibration equation of large membranes has been solved under fuzzy and interval uncertainty. Uncertainties have been considered in the initial conditions. New approaches, i.e. variational iteration method along with the double parametric form, have been applied to solve the vibration equation of large membranes.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a novel statistic energy analysis method with fuzzy parameters to study the dynamic and acoustic responses of coupled system with fuzzy parameters, which can expand the applied range of statistic energy analysis method in engineering to some extent.

Design/methodology/approach

On the basis of the property of membership level, the uncertain fuzzy parameters are expressed as the interval forms. Interval mathematics and interval expansion principle are adopted to solve the problem with interval parameters. At last, two numerical examples, which include a two-plate coupled system and a single-partition sound-insulation system, are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the presented method.

Findings

Interval mathematics and interval expansion principle are adopted to solve the problem with interval parameters.

Originality/value

By integrating the interval analysis, optimization technique and Taylor expansion method, two non-probabilistic, set-theoretical statistical energy analyses are proposed for predicting the dynamical and acoustical response of the complex coupled system with uncertain parameters in high-frequency domain.

Abstract

Purpose

Considering that uncertain factors widely exist in engineering practice, an adaptive collocation method (ACM) is developed for the structural fuzzy uncertainty analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

ACM arranges points in the axis of the membership adaptively. Through the adaptive collocation procedure, ACM can arrange more points in the axis of the membership where the membership function changes sharply and fewer points in the axis of the membership where the membership function changes slowly. At each point arranged in the axis of the membership, the level-cut strategy is used to obtain the cut-level interval of the uncertain variables; besides, the vertex method and the Chebyshev interval uncertainty analysis method are used to conduct the cut-level interval uncertainty analysis.

Findings

The proposed ACM has a high accuracy without too much additional computational efforts.

Originality/value

A novel ACM is developed for the structural fuzzy uncertainty analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop an efficient numerical method for mid-frequency analysis of built-up structures with large convex uncertainties.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the Chebyshev polynomial approximation technique, a Chebyshev convex method (CCM) combined with the hybrid finite element/statistical energy analysis (FE-SEA) framework is proposed to fulfil the purpose. In CCM, the Chebyshev polynomials for approximating the response functions of built-up structures are constructed over the uncertain domain by using the marginal intervals of convex parameters; the bounds of the response functions are calculated by applying the convex Monte–Carlo simulation to the approximate functions. A relative improvement method is introduced to evaluate the truncated order of CCM.

Findings

CCM has an advantage in accuracy over CPM when the considered order is the same. Furthermore, it is readily to consider the CCM with the higher order terms of the Chebyshev polynomials for handling the larger convex parametric uncertainty, and the truncated order can be effectively evaluated by the relative improvement method.

Originality/value

The proposed CCM combined with FE-SEA is the first endeavor to efficiently handling large convex uncertainty in mid-frequency vibro-acoustic analysis of built-up structures. It also has the potential to serve as a powerful tool for other kinds of system analysis when large convex uncertainty is involved.
