Abstract

Purpose

International migrants frequently struggle to obtain access to local primary care practices. The purpose of this paper is to explore factors associated with rejecting and accepting migrant patients into Canadian primary care practices.

Design/methodology/approach

Mixed methods study. Using a modified Delphi consensus approach among a network of experts on migrant health, the authors identified and prioritized factors related to rejecting and accepting migrants into primary care practices. From ten semi-structured interviews with the less-migrant-care experienced practitioners, the authors used qualitative description to further examine nuances of these factors.

Findings

Consensus was reached on practitioner-level factors associated with a reluctance of practitioners to accept migrants − communication challenges, high-hassle factor, limited availability of clinicians, fear of financial loss, lack of awareness of migrant groups, and limited migrant health knowledge – and on factors associated with accepting migrants − feeling useful, migrant health education, third party support, learning about other cultures, experience working overseas, and enjoying the challenge of treating diseases from around the world. Interviews supported use of interpreters, community resources, alternative payment methods, and migrant health education as strategies to overcome the identified challenges.

Research limitations/implications

This Delphi network represented the views of practitioners who had substantive experience in providing care for migrants. Interviews with less-experienced practitioners were used to mitigate this bias.

Originality/value

This study identifies the facilitators and challenges of migrants’ access to primary care from the perspective of primary care practitioners, work that complements research from patients’ perspectives. Strategies to address these findings are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

Since the construction industry in the State of Kuwait is further governed by a competitive environment, which is driven by the lowest cost mentality, the aim of this study is to identify and rank the relative importance of factors perceived to influence bid mark‐up size decisions among local general contractors bidding on construction projects.

Design/methodology/approach

The effects of 40 identified factors, which were shortlisted based on previous relevant investigations and the input of local industry experts, were surveyed by a statistically representative sample of contractors. Using the “relative importance index” technique, the influence ranks of the factors explored were established.

Findings

The results reveal the following as the primary factors affecting general contractors' bid mark‐up size decisions: employer type and identity; project size; clarity of technical specifications; previous experience with employer; number and identity of competitors; previous experience in similar projects; design complexity level; current work load; design quality level; and tendering duration.

Research limitations/implications

Although the outputs contribute to the overall body of knowledge related to bidding in the construction industry, it is further recommended to determine the relationship between the factors explored, especially those perceived as most significant, and their tangible effects on contractors' mark‐up decisions.

Practical implications

The outcomes: demonstrate the importance of the “constructability” concept to construction costs; and assert that the conception of exerting pressure on designers to cut down design durations and fees, and further shortening tenders' durations to speed up the projects' development process, is “false economy”.

Originality/value

The findings fill a gap in knowledge of the factors affecting contractors' bid mark‐up decisions, which can be used to provide academics, employers, industry practitioners, and policy makers, direction for focusing, acting upon and controlling the primary factors perceived to impact the competitiveness level of the State's construction industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The influencing factors of academic papers have always been the focus of attention in the field of Scientometrics. Exploring the influencing factors of altmetrics indicators and traditional literature indicators on academic papers is beneficial to better explore the potential significance and value of academic papers in the evaluation of scientific research. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the latest JCR citation report, this paper selects 22 academic journals in the JIF Quartile Q1 journal of Information Science and Library Science, and then obtains the evaluation data of these journal papers from WOS database and Altmetric.com. This paper uses literature measurement, correlation analysis and regression analysis to explore the influencing factors of the paper.

Findings

The results show that the original influencing factors of academic papers have a significant impact on secondary influencing factors. What is more obvious is that the number of references (nr) presents a significant positive correlation with the total number of times (Z9), the number of uses (U1) and (U2).

Originality/value

This paper combines traditional literature indicators with Altmetrics indicators to study the influencing factors through primary influencing factors and secondary influencing factors. Through research, it denies the phenomenon that academic circles have published academic papers in the world in recent years to overemphasize certain factors to improve the influence of the paper.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to undertake a comprehensive review of Kirkpatrick’s four-level evaluation model. Included was a brief discussion on the additions that have been suggested by critics attempting to make it more responsive to training practitioners’ needs as well as researchers’ inquiries. Also included is a contrast of Kirkpatrick’s model with the expanded model offered by Holton (1996) and a discussion of several key areas of agreement with his model as well as areas of concerns with Holton’s criticism of Kirkpatrick’s four-level model. This article also discussed the relationship of two key factors, not widely examined in the transfer of training literature that could impact the transfer of training to the workplace, namely trainee attributes and the supervisory role in training transfer as affected specifically by a manager’s degree of transformational leadership. A model depicting the balance between these two factors on training transfer was presented in an attempt to assist training professionals seeking to further understand the effects of this interaction on training transfer. Several recommendations were suggested to help training practitioners. Finally several recommendations were given for future studies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that influence the willingness of Saudi Arabian students from four universities in Saudi Arabia, to adopt learning management systems (LMSs). This will be accomplished by using two popular technology acceptance models unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) and theory of planned behavior (TPB).

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 445 undergraduates from four Saudi educational institutions participate in filling out the study questionnaire. To investigate the correlations between the variables, the study used structural equation modeling for data analysis.

Findings

The results of the study show that effort expectancy (EE), subjective norm (SN), attitude toward behavior (ATB) and perceived behavioral control (PBC) are found to be substantially connected with their intentions to use (ITU) LMSs. The findings also show that there is a strong relationship between students’ intentions and their actual use of LMSs.

Research limitations/implications

Like many studies, this research has some limitations. The primary limitation is that the findings of the study cannot be extrapolated to other settings since the report’s analysis and investigation were limited to four Saudi universities. Therefore, to generalize the study’s findings, similar research needs to be conducted in other Gulf and similar cultural universities.

Practical implications

The integrated model identifies key factors that influence the intent of Saudi Arabian students to use LMS, including EEs, social influence, ATB and PBC. This model can help develop solutions for the obstacles that prevent students from using LMS. The findings can be used to provide assistance to increase the likelihood of LMS acceptance as part of the educational experience. The model may also inspire further research on this topic in the Gulf nations, particularly in Saudi Arabia.

Originality/value

As none of the relevant studies conducted previously in Saudi Arabia has integrated the two models to study the students’ ITU LMSs, this study combines two major theories, TPB and UTAUT, in the context of Saudi Arabia, contributing to the field of technology use in education by expanding empirical research and providing a thorough understanding of the challenges associated with the use of LMS in Saudi universities. This study should be viewed as filling a crucial gap in the field. Moreover, this integrated model, using more than one theoretical perspective, brings a thorough comprehension of the barriers that hinder students’ adoption of LMSs in the academic context in Saudi Arabia and thus assists in making effective decisions and reaching viable solutions.

Abstract

Purpose

Recent research has garnered increasing attention to Quality 4.0, yet its implementation poses significant challenges across various industries. This study aims to identify and analyze the factors influencing Quality 4.0 implementation, considering their types and interactions. It offers solutions to facilitate the adoption of Quality 4.0 within Iran’s home appliance industry.

Design/methodology/approach

This research involved identifying the factors impacting Quality 4.0 implementation through a comprehensive review of relevant literature and the evolution of Quality 4.0. To evaluate the present status of these factors, data were gathered from the top ten manufacturing companies in Iran’s home appliance industry.

Findings

The study revealed that Perceived Saving Time emerged as the primary factor influencing changes in one of the backward scenarios of Perceived Saving Cost. Additionally, the research findings indicate that enhancements in the Vision and Strategy factor trigger a cascade effect across multiple factors, ultimately resulting in improvements in Knowledge and Awareness of Quality 4.0.

Originality/value

This research’s outcomes offer valuable insights for implementing Quality 4.0 and provide a novel perspective for researchers engaged in quality management.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects and relative influence of: surface floor area; number of trowelling machines used in the operation; machine floating ring diameter size; and operative employment mode, on power‐trowelling productivity of concrete surface floors.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve this objective, a sufficiently large volume of productivity data was collected and analyzed using the categorical‐regression method. As a result, the effects and relative influence of the factors investigated on trowelling productivity were determined and quantified.

Findings

The findings show significant influence of the factors explored on the trowelling productivity of concrete surface floors, which substantiate the importance of the “economy of scale” concept, and confirm the negative effect of “overcrowding”. On the other hand, contrary to many previous productivity research findings, and anecdotal perceptions of industry practitioners, the results obtained provide little evidence to the positive impact of the subcontracting employment mode on the trowelling operation.

Research limitations/implications

Further research into the influence of other factors which could not be determined by this study, i.e. quantifying the difference in trowelling productivity between the “walk‐behind” and “ride‐on” machine types, and the average change in the operation efficiency as a result of utilizing the 0.60 m “walk‐behind” floating ring diameter size, in comparison with the 0.80, 1.00, and 1.20 m explored ring‐size, is recommended. On the other hand, the results obtained suggest that for a specific surface floor area, there may be an optimum number of trowelling machines, which leads to optimum trowelling productivity. It is, therefore, recommended to determine this number in order to rationalize the use of such devices and optimize the efficiency of the operation.

Practical implications

The findings of this research can provide estimators, planners and construction managers guidance for reasonable estimates, effective planning and efficient operative utilization. The results obtained may be further used to “benchmark” the efficiency of the operation, and “formalize” the specific productivity knowledge acquired.

Originality/value

The outcomes of this study fill a gap in productivity knowledge of primary factors influencing an important surface floor finish technique, which is frequently encountered on concrete construction sites, especially parking structures, storages and industrial facilities.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to investigate the factors influencing the behavioural intention of bottom-of-the-pyramid (BOP) consumers in developing economies, such as India, to adopt mobile wallets, drawing upon the framework of the uses and gratification theory. Furthermore, the study also examines the moderating effect of gender.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the objective, primary data were collected from a sample of 220 respondents using the survey method. The reliability and validity of the survey instrument were demonstrated through confirmatory factor analysis. Subsequently, structural equation modelling (SEM) was used for hypotheses testing.

Findings

The study revealed that only convenience and social influence have a positive significant influence on the behavioural intention to adopt mobile wallets whereas, innovativeness, trust and compatibility have no significant relationship with behavioural intention to adopt mobile wallets among the BOP consumers. Further, gender moderates the relationship between compatibility and behavioural intention to adopt mobile wallets in India.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the underexplored area of research concerning the behavioural intention to adopt mobile wallets among BOP consumers in a developing economy. It introduces a novel approach by using the uses and gratifications theory to uncover the underlying motivations behind adoption behaviour.

Purpose

Virtual reality (VR) offers unprecedented immersion and interactivity in education, and working and learning from home have become the norm during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study empirically investigated the factors affecting the use of a VR online learning system (VROLS).

Design/methodology/approach

To explore factors affecting users’ continuance behavioral intentions toward using VROLSs, a research framework was formed comprising factors that constitute benefits (i.e. pull factors) and costs (i.e. push factors); these factors included perceived value, flow and social influence. The data for this study were collected via online survey questionnaires. A total of 307 valid responses were used to examine the hypotheses in the research model, employing structural equation modeling (SEM) techniques.

Findings

Perceived value, flow experience and the number of peers using VR primarily affect the decision to adopt a VROLS. The pull factors of spatial presence, entertainment and service compatibility, along with the push factors of complexity and visual fatigue, affect perceived value. Therefore, we conclude that perceived value is a primary factor positively influencing both flow experience and the decision to adopt the service.

Originality/value

This study contributes to a theoretical understanding of factors that explain users’ intention to use VROLSs.

Abstract

Purpose

The global COVID-19 epidemic has posed significant challenges to the development of innovation and entrepreneurship education in Chinese and foreign universities, and the application of artificial intelligence generated content (AIGC) technology has presented both opportunities and challenges to its development. The purpose of this study is to summarize advanced experiences and models of new engineering innovation and entrepreneurship education development in Chinese and foreign universities, as well as to analyze the influencing factors. Taking the sustainable development goals (SDGs) into account, this study qualitatively proposes enhancement paths and improvement suggestions based on the application of AIGC technology, providing a reference for promoting the sustainable development (SD) of innovation and entrepreneurship education in Chinese universities.

Design/methodology/approach

By using the qualitative comparative analysis (QCA), this paper studies the interaction mechanism between the influencing factors of innovation and entrepreneurship in universities under the background of SDGs. This paper selects 12 representative universities with different cultures and strengths. Meanwhile, this paper analyzes the content of 2,535 publications on innovation and entrepreneurship education and summarizes seven influencing factors as comparison criteria. Then, this paper codes, summarizes and uses configuration to assess the primary factors influencing the development of innovation and entrepreneurship in colleges and universities at home and abroad.

Findings

On the quality of new engineering innovation and entrepreneurship education, comprehensive, diverse influencing factors and upgrading paths are obtained. Furthermore, this research proposes that the SD of innovation and entrepreneurship education in universities should make effective use of “AI plus education” and actively construct practical and teaching platforms. Meanwhile, the ChatGPT is being used to strengthen the innovation and entrepreneurship curricular system and talent training mode. The research also makes recommendations for improving teachers’ ability to acquire intelligent tools and promotes three-way teaching modalities of “teacher-AI-student” by taking into account the influence of various aspects.

Originality/value

This research uses the QCA research method, which analyzes not only influencing factors on the SD of innovation and entrepreneurship education but also explores the interaction mechanisms among factors. Furthermore, the research incorporates SDGs and AIGC technology application scenarios into the field of domestic innovation and entrepreneurship education, which will be helpful in SDGs of innovation and entrepreneurship education on both theoretical and practical levels.
