Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to enhance the functional properties of Hessian fabric through resin finishing. Hessian bags made of lignocellulosic jute fiber are commonly used to pack, store and transport agro-commodities, including horticultural crops such as rice, potato, onion and wheat. However, because of high water affinity, these bags undergo degradation in properties due to moisture release by the stored commodities themselves. Exposure to natural elements, e.g. rain and dew, also causes moisture absorption in hessian bags. Once the bag gets moistened, degradation of jute bags starts due to microbial attack, leading to loss in tensile strength and change in extensibility, leading to ultimate breakage in warp and weft directions of the fabric.

Design/methodology/approach

To overcome the degradation in the functional properties of hessian fabric due to exposure to moisture and microbial attack, the application of semi-synthetic polymeric materials was carried out.

Findings

Tenacity, bursting strength, puncture resistance, tear strength and breaking load, as well as life cycle of resin-treated jute fabric was found to be better than control jute.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no recent reports of resin finishing on jute (hessian) fabric with semi-synthetic resins are presently available, other than coating with rubber.

Abstract

Purpose

Recent advancements in the domain of smart communication systems and technologies have led to the augmented developments for very large scale integrated circuit designs in electro-magnetic applications. Increasing demands for low power, compact area and superior figure of merit–oriented circuit designs are the trends of the recent research studies. Hence, to accomplish such applications intended for optical communications, the transimpedance amplifier (TIA) was designed.

Design/methodology/approach

In this research work, the authors present a multi-layer active feedback structure which mainly composes a transimpedance stage and a gain stage followed by a low pass filter. This structure enables to achieve improved input impedance and superior gain. A simplified cascaded amplifier has also been designed in a hierarchical topology to improvise the noise effect further. The proposed TIA has been designed using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company 45 nm complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology. Moreover, the thermal noise has been analyzed at −3 dB bandwidth to prove the reduction in thermal noise with increase in frequency for most of the devices used in the designed circuit.

Findings

The proposed differential TIA circuit was found to obtain the transimpedance gain of 50.1 dBO without applying any external bias current which is almost 8% improvised as compared to the conventional circuit. In addition to this, bandwidth achieved was 2.15 GHz along with only 38 W of power consumption, which is reasonably 100 times improvised in comparison of conventional circuit. Hence, the proposed differential TIA is suitable for the low power optical communications applications intended to work on low supply voltage.

The designed work is done by authors in university lab premises and is not copied from anywhere. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, it is 100% original.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to adapt integrated hierarchical evaluation platform (associated with “green” performance indices) toward evaluation and selection of alternative suppliers under green supply chain (GSC) philosophy.

Design/methodology/approach

In this context, incompleteness, vagueness, imprecision, as well as inconsistency associated with subjective evaluation information aligned with ill-defined suppliers’ assessment indices has been tackled through logical exploration of fuzzy set theory. A fuzzy-based multi-level multi-criteria decision-making (FMLMCDM) approach as proposed by Chu and Varma (2012), has been case empirically studied in the context of green suppliers selection.

Findings

Result obtained thereof, has been compared to that of fuzzy-TOPSIS to validate application potential of the aforementioned FMLMCDM approach.

Originality/value

The proposed method has been found fruitful from managerial implication viewpoint.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to monitor suspended particulate matter (SPM), PM2.5 and source apportionment study for the identification of possible sources during the year 2018–2019 at Raipur, India.

Design/methodology/approach

Source apportionment study was performed using a multivariate receptor model, positive matrix factorization (PMFv5.0) with a view to identify the various possible sources of particulate matter in the area. Back-trajectory analysis was also performed using NOAA-HYSPLIT model to understand the origin and trans-boundary movement of air mass over the sampling location.

Findings

Daily average SPM and PM2.5 aerosols mass concentration was found to be 377.19 ± 157.24 µg/m³ and 126.39 ± 37.77 µg/m³ respectively. SPM and PM2.5 mass concentrations showed distinct seasonal cycle; SPM – (Winter ; 377.19 ±157.25 µg/m?) > (Summer; 283.57 ±93.18 µg/m?) > (Monsoon; 33.20 ±16.32 µg/m?) and PM2.5 – (Winter; 126.39±37.77 µg/m³) > (Summer; 75.92±12.28 µg/m³). Source apportionment model (PMF) have been applied and identified five major sources contributing the pollution; steel production and industry (68%), vehicular and re-suspended road dust (10.1%), heavy oil combustion (10.1%), tire wear and brake wear/abrasion (8%) and crustal/Earth crust (3.7%). Industrial activities have been identified as major contributing factor for air quality degradation in the region.

Practical implications

Chemical characterization of aerosols and identification of possible sources will be helpful in abatement of pollution and framing mitigating strategies. It will also help in standardization of global climate model.

Originality/value

The findings provide valuable results to be considered for controlling air pollution in the region.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate factors that influence the attitudes and intentions of investors towards environmental, social and governance (ESG) stocks in the presence of perceived risk as a moderator.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was collected through an online survey method from 341 investors with more than three years of investing experience. Smart PLS was used to analyse the data using two-stage structural equation modelling. First, a measurement model was performed for construct reliability and validity, followed by path analysis (structural model) for hypothesis testing and overall model predictability.

Findings

The findings show that both environmental concern (altruistic value) and economic concern (egoistic value) are crucial for the attitude and intention of investors to invest in ESG-backed stocks; however, environmental concern was found to be a more significant predictor of their behaviour, showing evidence of pro-environmental values in the decision-making of utility-seeking individuals. No significant impact of perceived risk was evident as a moderator of the relationship between attitude and intention towards ESG stocks.

Practical implications

The study's findings have implications for fund managers, policymakers, and the government. Values as antecedents were found to be influential in shaping investors’ attitudes and intentions towards the environmental cause. Fund managers could include more ESG-compliant companies in their portfolios, and the government can play an important role in encouraging investors by providing financial incentives. Corporates should also take strategic steps to adopt green production processes to secure long-term, sustainable capital funding.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there has been no research done in the field of ESG investing that takes into account the values (both altruistic and egoistic) of investors as potential antecedents of their attitudes and intentions.

Purpose

Microcapsule-embedded autonomic healing materials have the ability to repair microcracks when they come into contact with the crack by releasing the healing agent. The microcapsules with specific shape and thickness effect in releasing healing agent to the cracked surfaces. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to know the load bearing capacity of the self-healing microcapsules and the stresses developed in the material.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present study, self-healing microcapsule is modelled and integrated with the polymer matrix composite. The aim of the present study is to investigate failure criteria of Poly (methyl methacrylate) microcapsules by varying the shell thickness, capsule diameter and loading conditions. The strength of the capsule is evaluated by keeping the shell thickness as constant and varying the capsule diameter. Uniformly distributed pressure loads were applied on the capsule-reinforced polymer matrix composite to assess the failure strength of capsules and composite.

Findings

It is observed from the results that the load required to break the capsules is increasing with the increase in capsule diameter. The failure strength of microcapsule with 100 µm diameter and 5 µm thickness is observed as 255 MPa. For an applied load range of 40–160 N/mm2 on the capsules embedded composite, the maximum stress developed in the capsules is observed as 308 MPa.

Originality/value

Failure strengths of microcapsules and stresses developed in the microcapsule-reinforced polymer composites were evaluated.

Abstract

Purpose

Agriculture, since time immemorial, has been a major sector in reducing poverty, accelerating economic activities and source of sustainability of a nation. As most of the youth in the 21st century are targeting the youth's career in the non-agricultural sector, attracting and involving the youths in agribusinesses is the need of the hour. In this regard, the research tries to understand the awareness and involvement of youth farmers in agripreneurship in Western Nepal.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a structured questionnaire, data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. On the basis of descriptive and inferential analysis, the ordered logit model is employed in the study. The research is based on explanatory research design through identifying farmers' awareness of agriculture entrepreneurship from 324 farmers of Bedkot Municipality, Kanchanpur, Nepal.

Findings

Study findings have shown that agricultural knowledge with overall awareness is statistically significant. Ordered logistic regression indicated that sex has somehow influenced technical and entrepreneur skills while agriculture information highly influenced education and training. The result shows that agricultural training is still the requirement of one-fourth of the farmers, whereas another quarter of farmers need subsidies.

Research limitations/implications

The study suggests that in order to enhance awareness, training, subsidy, market management and development program are widely needed. In the backdrop of declining agro-products and food security challenges, the study targets to offer an understanding to policymakers and stakeholders on addressing the dire need of agripreneurship among the youths around the world.

Originality/value

The study summarizes the state of knowledge of agripreneurship of Nepalese farmers, identifies emerging issues and policy implications and priorities for future applied research.

In India, one in 500 people (Balaji, 2019) are diagnosed with ASD. Around 40 non-governmental organizations cater to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) children; out of that, a few organizations focus on adults providing them vocational training to make them employable. One such exercise was initiated by SAP Labs India, a leading software company, and Enable India, an Indian NGO where they developed a focused training program for people with ASD and placed them in vital technical jobs in SAP Labs India (Karwa, 2016). First, we peek into the lifestyles of a few successful neurodiverse rock stars in India and their journey from becoming aware of their profile to establishing a career and becoming a role model to other people with ASD. Second, we present the autism landscape in India. Third, we explore the organizations that have hired people with ASD, their policies connected to neurodiversity, and the organizations that give training and support. Fourth, we present the potentials and the challenges people with ASD face. Fifth and final, we cover the role of different stakeholders to foster support and up-skill people with ASD for better community development.

Abstract

Ultra low permeability rocks such as shales exhibit complex fracture networks which must be discretely characterized in our reservoir models to evaluate stimulation designs and completion strategies properly. The pressure (Darcy’s law) and composition driven (Fick’s law) flow mechanisms when combined result in composition, pressure and saturationdependent slippage factor. The approach used in this study is to utilize pressure-dependent transmissibility multipliers to incorporate apparent gas-permeability changes resulting from multi-mechanism flows in commercial simulators. This work further expounds on the effectiveness of the theory by presenting a descriptive analysis between two commercially utilized numerical simulators. The applicability of dynamic slippage as an effective flow mechanism governing gas flow mechanisms within the computational environment of two different simulators is attempted in this analysis. Results indicate that slippage-governed flow in modelling shale reservoirs should not be ignored.
