Abstract
Purpose
Detecting O2 gas in a confined space at room temperature is particularly important to monitor the work process of precision equipment. This study aims to propose a miniaturized, low-cost, mass-scale produced O2 sensor operating around 30°C.
Design/methodology/approach
The O2 sensor based on lanthanum fluoride (LaF3) solid electrolyte thin film was developed using MEMS technology. The principle of the sensor was a galvanic cell H2O, O2, Pt | LaF3 | Sn, SnF2 |, in which the Sn film was prepared by magnetron sputtering, and the LaF3 film was prepared by thermal resistance evaporation.
Findings
Through pretreatments, the sensor’s response signal to 40% oxygen concentration was enhanced from 1.9 mV to 46.0 mV at 30°C and 97.0% RH. Tests at temperatures from 30°C to 50°C and humidity from 32.4% RH to 97.0% RH indicated that the output electromotive force (EMF) has a linear relationship with the logarithm of the oxygen concentration. The sensitivity of the sensor increases with an increase in both humidity and temperature in the couple mode, and the EMF of the sensor follows well with the Nernst equation at different temperatures and humidity.
Practical implications
This research could be applied to monitor the oxygen concentration below 25% in confined spaces at room temperature safely without a power supply.
Originality/value
The relationship between temperature and humidity coupling and the response of the sensor was obtained. The nano-film material was integrated with the MEMS process. It is expected to be practically applied in the future.

Abstract
Purpose
Among different types of engineering structures, plates play a significant role. Their analysis necessitates numerical modeling with finite elements, such as triangular, quadrangular or sector plate elements, owing to the intricate geometrical shapes and applied loads. The scope of this study is the development of a new rectangular finite element for thin plate bending based on the strain approach using Airy's function. It is called a rectangular plate finite element using Airy function (RPFEUAF) and has four nodes. Each node had three degrees of freedom: one transverse displacement (w) and two normal rotations (x, y).
Design/methodology/approach
Equilibrium conditions are used to generate the interpolation functions for the fields of strain, displacements and stresses. The evolution of the Airy function solutions yielded the selection of these polynomial bi-harmonic functions. The variational principle and the analytical integration approach are used to evaluate the basic stiffness matrix.
Findings
The numerical findings for thin plates quickly approach the Kirchhoff solution. The results obtained are compared to the analytical solution based on Kirchhoff theory.
Originality/value
The efficiency of the strain based approach using Airy's function is confirmed, and the robustness of the presented element RPFEUAF is demonstrated. Because of this, the current element is more reliable, better suited for computations and especially intriguing for modeling this kind of structure.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to extend the application of the quality category approach in rapid fatigue assessment of complex welded structures containing defects under arbitrary loadings, following the investigation of their core data and fatigue assessment procedures based on fracture mechanics.
Design/methodology/approach
The analysis methods and procedures for calculating equivalent sizes of semi-elliptic cracks and initial sizes of through-width cracks at the weld toe were developed based on the life equivalence principle. Different stress concentration solutions, i.e. 2D-Mk and 3D-Mk solutions, and different bending ratios were considered. Then, approximate equations were proposed to calculate the crack size under combined stress. In addition, a procedure for calculating the fatigue life by interpolation was proposed and applied to engineering examples.
Findings
The fatigue lives of fillet and butt weld joints obtained with the 3D-Mk solution for large L/B are longer than those obtained with the 2D-Mk solution. The results of the fatigue life of the brake unit bracket show that the average error between the proposed approximation equations and the quality category approach is 1.6%.
Originality/value
The quality category and equivalent size curves of different stress concentration solutions under combined membrane and bending stresses are newly added, which further expands the application of the quality category approach. When the proposed fatigue life calculation methods are employed, the remaining life can be quickly derived in addition to the qualitative conclusion on the safety of the structure. These provide the necessary conditions to perform a rapid fatigue assessment adapted to engineering purposes.

Abstract
Purpose
The objective of this paper is to quantitatively assess shear band evolution by using two-dimensional discrete element method (DEM).
Design/methodology/approach
The DEM model was first calibrated by retrospectively modelling existing triaxial tests. A series of DEM analyses was then conducted with the focus on the particle rotation during loading. An approach based on particle rotation was developed to precisely identify the shear band region from the surrounding. In this approach, a threshold rotation angle ω0 was defined to distinguish the potential particles inside and outside the shear band and an index g(ω0) was introduced to assess the discrepancy between the rotation response inside and outside shear band. The most distinct shear band region can be determined by the ω0 corresponding to the peak g(ω0). By using the proposed approach, the shear band development of two computational cases with different typical localised failure patterns were successfully examined by quantitatively measuring the inclination angle and thickness of shear band, as well as the microscopic quantities.
Findings
The results show that the shear band formation is stress-dependent, transiting from conjugated double shear bands to single shear band with confining stress increasing. The shear band evolution of two typical localised failure modes exhibits opposite trends with increasing strain level, both in inclination angle and thickness. Shear band featured a larger volumetric dilatancy and a lower coordination number than the surrounding. The shear band also significantly disturbs the induced anisotropy of soil.
Originality/value
This paper proposed an approach to quantitatively assess shear band evolution based on the result of two-dimensional DEM modelling.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper provides a summary of the issues in the passive fire protection of steel structures. Types of passive fire protection and the material properties of protection members and steel members are described. The paper deals with the possibility of partial fire protection for secondary steel beams, in cases where, due to possible membrane action, it is not necessary to apply passive protection to the entire beams.
Design/methodology/approach
Studies of partially fire-protected steel structures are compared, and results from studies with different input data are summarized. A fire experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of partial passive protection in a small-scale furnace. Based on the findings of the experiment, numerical models were prepared using Ansys Mechanical.
Findings
The results are summarized, and a partial fire protection length of 500 mm is recommended. Various partial fire protection lengths were compared, and the temperature development of the steel contactors was compared using a protection length of 500 mm. At the end of the paper, options for partial passive protection of steel beams are presented.
Originality/value
Extended paper from ASFE2021 based on selection.

Abstract
Purpose
Nature and occurrence of food-borne pathogens in raw and processed food products evolved greatly in the past few years due to new modes of transmission and resistance build-up against sundry micro-/macro-environmental conditions. Assurance of food health and safety thus gained immense importance, for which bio-sensing technology proved very promising in the detection and quantification of food-borne pathogens. Considering the importance, different studies have been performed, and different biosensors have been developed. This study aims to summarize the different biosensors used for the deduction of food-borne pathogens.
Design/methodology/approach
The present review highlights different biosensors developed apropos to food matrices, factors governing their selection, their potential and applicability. The paper discusses some related key challenges and constraints and also focuses on the needs and future research prospects in this field.
Findings
The shift in consumers’ and industries’ perceptions directed the further approach to achieve portable, user and environmental friendly biosensing techniques. Despite of these developments, it was still observed that the comparison among the different biosensors and their categories proved tedious on a single platform; since the food matrices tested, pathogen detected or diagnosed, time of detection, etc., varied greatly and very few products have been commercially launched. Conclusively, a challenge lies in front of food scientists and researchers to maintain pace and develop techniques for efficiently catering to the needs of the food industry.
Research limitations/implications
Biosensors deduction limit varied with the food matrix, type of organism, material of biosensors’ surface, etc. The food matrix itself consists of complex substances, and various types of food are available in nature. Considering the diversity of food there is a need to develop a universal biosensor that can be used for all the food matrices for a pathogen. Further research is needed to develop a pathogen-specific biosensor that can be used for all the food products that may have accuracy to eliminate the traditional method of deduction.
Originality/value
The present paper summarized and categorized the different types of biosensors developed for food-borne pathogens.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of Passive Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (PDMFC) experimentally using various Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) shapes such as square, rectangle, rhombus, and circle with equal areas and equal perimeters. The variation in MEA shape/size is achieved by altering gasket openings in the dynamic regions.
Design/methodology/approach
In the equal areas of MEA shapes, gasket opening areas of 1963.5 (+/−0.2) mm2 are used. Whereas in the equal perimeters of shapes, gasket opening perimeters of 157.1 (+/−0.2) mm are used. In this experimentation, Nickel-201 current collectors with 45.3% of circular openings are used on both the anode and cathode sides. The experiment is carried out at a 5 molar methanol concentration to find out the highest power density of the cell.
Findings
In the equal areas, among the shapes that are chosen for investigation, the square shape opening consisting of a perimeter of 177.2 mm has developed a maximum power density of 6.344 mWcm−2 and a maximum current density of 65.2 mAcm−2. Similarly, in equal perimeters, the rhombus shape opening with an area of 1400 mm2 has developed a maximum power density of 7.714 mWcm−2 and a maximum current density of 85.3 mAcm−2.
Originality/value
The novelty of this research work is instead of fabricating various shapes and sizes of highly expensive MEAs, the desired shapes and sizes of the MEA are achieved by altering gasket openings over dynamic regions to find out the highest power density of the cell.
