Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the perception threshold (PT) of electrotactile stimulation under non-steady contact condition (NSCC) which is rarely considered in previous reports mainly because of the difficulty with experimental control. Three factors of NSCC are involved, including the current alternating frequency, the tapping interval of stimulation and the stimulating area of skin. The study is aimed at providing the basic PT data for design and application of wearable and portable electrotactile device.
Design/methodology/approach
The up-down method was selected to assess PT, and 72 experimental scenarios were constructed. During the study, we developed an experimental platform with the function of data record and programmable current stimulation. With psychophysical experiment, more than 10,000 data were collected. Furthermore, statics analysis and ANOVA test were opted for exploring the main factor influencing PT.
Findings
NSCC has different PTs on each body location, and PT has a positive correlation with frequency. In general, PT in NSCC is significantly lower than that in SCC. In some cases, it can be lower by more than 60 per cent. In addition, women have a lower PT than men across all age groups, and the younger is generally more sensitive than the older in electro-sensation.
Research limitations/implications
Limited factors of NSCC were considered in this study. Contact time and break interval should be investigated in the future work.
Practical implications
The paper includes implications for the development of smart electrotactile device.
Originality/value
This paper fulfills a challenge in assessing the PT under NSCC.

Abstract
In response to the increasing demands for energy saving and carbon reduction under current global trends, we apply 10 fashion summer tops from Paris and New York made of cotton and CVC fabrics, fabric that has moisture transferring and sweat expulsion abilities, and fabric with moisture transferring and sweat expulsion properties that also imparts a cooling sensation in this study. Furthermore, by analyzing the activity of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves which are measured by a heartbeat variability analyzer, we have obtained the relative comfort results in both the dynamic and static modes while the tested subject is wearing garments made from the 4 types of fabrics. We have tried to bring out the relationship between summer fashion style, fabric type and comfort. The test results indicate that the fabric with moisture transferring and sweat expulsion abilities can greatly increase the comfort of the garment and the comfort will be further increased if the fabric adds nano mineral-powder that imparts a cooling sensation for further moisture transferring and sweat expulsion. Finally, less coverage and stress on the top part (neck, shoulders and upper back) of the human body can reduce induced pressure and increase the relative comfort.

Abstract
Purpose
In China, external supervision on construction safety mainly comes from the government and supervision engineers (SEs). However, the construction safety supervisory mechanism (CSSM) contains some dilemmas affecting the improvement of safety performance, such as the declining impact of SEs, the increasing rent-seeking behaviors of contractor and excessive government interference. This study aims to depict and analyze the CSSM in China from an evolutionary game view. The objectives are to understand the supervision strategy and evolutionary behaviors of different stakeholders, propose suggestions for improving safety performance and help the key safety supervision stakeholders, especially the government, formulate a suitable safety supervision strategy.
Design/methodology/approach
This research uses tripartite dynamic evolutionary game theory to study the CSSM in China and solve the stable equilibrium solution using system dynamics.
Findings
This study has revealed the game relationship of construction safety supervision mechanisms in China and solved the stable equilibrium solution. The results prove that a supervision engineer (SE) plays a crucial role in the CSSM, and “supervision engineer useless” is an unreasonable assertion. For government supervision agency (GSA), excessive inspection and free-market regulation are neither wise strategies. GSA can reduce the inspection frequency when general contractors (GCs) input high safety investments and SEs implement responsible supervision. But keeping proper government supervision to avoid GC's unlawful behaviors and SE's rent-seeking is indispensable. In addition, excessive governmental supervision will weaken SE's role, so the government should transfer some supervision powers to SE.
Originality/value
This study focuses on the dynamic evolution process between GSA, GC and SE. This method is different from most research that neglected the dynamic characteristic of system and game solution stability. The research methods not only contribute to construction safety supervision policy-making in China but also help to improve supervision efficiency in other countries and other fields.

Purpose
Entrepreneurship is one of the significant drivers of economic growth, development and job generation in several countries worldwide. Realizing its significant contribution to the nation’s development, policymakers and educators have also drawn attention to fostering entrepreneurship among the youth. Researchers attempted to comprehend the dynamics and investigate the factors influencing entrepreneurial intention (EI). As is true for other abilities and response tendencies, individual differences exist for EI also. This study aims to explore the relationship of emotional intelligence (EIn) and cognitive flexibility (CF) with EI and mediating effect of entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) in the relationship between CF, EIn and EI.
Design/methodology/approach
The cross-sectional survey was conducted to gather responses from 635 individuals aged 17–26 years (M = 19.2, SD = 1.49). The hypotheses were tested using correlation, regression and mediation analysis.
Findings
The findings indicated that EIn and CF were significantly and positively related to EI. Furthermore, ESE was found to be a partial mediator between EIn and EI and a full mediator between CF and EI.
Research limitations/implications
Results reflected the critical significance of ESE and implied that EI might be strengthened by intervening in ESE through various sources.
Originality/value
This study adds to the existing literature by incorporating less studied individual factors (EIn and CF) to better understand EI by explaining the mediation mechanism through ESE.

Purpose
This paper aims to research steel wire corrosion pitting distribution characteristics and evolution, the shape, number and size of corrosion pits from one tied arch bridge were tested, analyzed and researched.
Design/methodology/approach
The probability distribution model of corrosion pits of different shapes was established, and the law of corrosion pit growth and evolution was researched. The relationship between the steel wire local corrosion parameters and the average degree of corrosion was explored.
Findings
The results revealed that the pits of steel wires can be divided into four categories of shapes: a deep ellipsoidal shape, a shallow ellipsoidal shape, a groove shape and a saddle shape. When developing to a certain degree, the small dark narrow type corrosion pit will turn into a large open pit of either a shallow ellipsoidal shape, a groove shape or a saddle shape.
Originality/value
The maximum depth of the corrosion pits was close to the Weibull distribution, and the maximum width and length of the wire corrosion pits were close to the logarithmic normal distribution, causing a large error when using a uniform corrosion model of steel wire mechanics.

Abstract
Purpose
One increasingly popular financing option for entrepreneurial ventures is to attract corporate venture capital (CVC) investments. Prior research tends to take a CVC-centric perspective assessing the benefits and contingencies for incumbent firms or corporate investors to engage with entrepreneurial ventures. Few studies have taken the opposite perspective of investigating factors that entrepreneurial ventures need to take into account when engaging with CVC investments. As such, this study aims to investigate pre- and post-IPO entrepreneurial venture performance that partners with CVC providers or corporate investors, as well as to assess organizational and environmental contingencies.
Design/methodology/approach
This study draws on a sample of 631 entrepreneurial ventures from the CSMAR database ranging from 2009 to 2019, along with CVC financing data from the CVSource database and financial data in entrepreneurial ventures’ annual reports from the Juchao Network. This study applies multiple linear regression modelling and fixed effect panel data analyses to test the proposed hypotheses.
Findings
The results show that CVC investment contributes to entrepreneurial ventures’ financial performance, both pre- and post-IPO. However, while research and development (R&D) intensity and geographic proximity strengthen the positive relationship between CVC investment and entrepreneurial ventures’ performance pre-IPO, R&D intensity has a negative moderating effect on the relationship between CVC investment and entrepreneurial ventures’ performance post-IPO.
Practical implications
First, in emerging economies, adopting a CVC financing strategy is an important strategic choice for entrepreneurial ventures that have a great demand for external capital, resources and technology support. Second, leveraging the relationship between external financing and internal R&D investment is essential for them to maintain their core competitiveness and sustainable growth. Moreover, entrepreneurial ventures should deal with the coopetitive relationship with incumbent companies and manage their dependency on other market participants in the external environment.
Originality/value
This study focuses on the performance implications for entrepreneurial ventures engaging with CVC investments pre- and post-IPO. First, this study broadens and expands prior research on the mechanism of the relationship between CVC and entrepreneurial ventures’ financial performance. Second, the research conducts a comparative study of the moderating effects of different timings. Third, this study applies learning theory to the field of CVC in emerging economies.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop some interesting results in the field of chaotic synchronization with a new finite-time controller to reduce the time of convergence.
Design/methodology/approach
This article proposes a finite-time controller for the synchronization of hyper(chaotic) systems in a given time. The chaotic systems are perturbed by the model uncertainties and external disturbances. The designed controller achieves finite-time synchronization convergence to the steady-state error without oscillation and elimination of the nonlinear terms from the closed-loop system. The finite-time synchronization convergence reduces the hacking duration and recovers the embedded message in chaotic signals within a given preassigned limited time. The free oscillation convergence keeps the energy consumption low and alleviates failure chances of the actuator. The proposed finite-time controller is a combination of linear and nonlinear parts. The linear part keeps the stability of the closed-loop, the nonlinear part increases the rate of convergence to the origin. A generalized form of analytical stability proof is derived for the synchronization of chaotic and hyper-chaotic systems. The simulation results provide the validation of the accomplish synchronization for the Lu chaotic and hyper-chaotic systems.
Findings
The designed controller not only reduces the time of convergence without oscillation of the trajectories which can run the system for a given time domain.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to simultaneously determine the constitutive parameters and boundary conditions by solving inverse mechanical problems of power hardening elastoplastic materials in three-dimensional geometries.
Design/methodology/approach
The power hardening elastoplastic problem is solved by the complex variable finite element method in software ABAQUS, based on a three-dimensional complex stress element using user-defined element subroutine. The complex-variable-differentiation method is introduced and used to accurately calculate the sensitivity coefficients in the multiple parameters identification method, and the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm is applied to carry out the inversion.
Findings
Numerical results indicate that the complex variable finite element method has good performance for solving elastoplastic problems of three-dimensional geometries. The inversion method is effective and accurate for simultaneously identifying multi-parameters of power hardening elastoplastic problems in three-dimensional geometries, which could be employed for solving inverse elastoplastic problems in engineering applications.
Originality/value
The constitutive parameters and boundary conditions are simultaneously identified for power hardening elastoplastic problems in three-dimensional geometries, which is much challenging in practical applications. The numerical results show that the inversion method has high accuracy, good stability, and fast convergence speed.

Abstract
Purpose
The current study, which is based on social learning theory and social cognitive theory, intends to investigate the impact of entrepreneurial leadership on employee creativity at both the individual and team levels. In particular, the authors predict a mediating mechanism at both levels: employees’ entrepreneurial self-efficacy. Further, the authors consider whether the climate of support for innovation is a contextual element affecting the relationship between employees’ perceptions of entrepreneurial leadership and their own entrepreneurial self-efficacy.
Design/methodology/approach
The research hypotheses were tested using multilevel structural equation modeling on 191 employees nested in 49 entrepreneurial ventures in China.
Findings
The results indicated that entrepreneurial leadership positively correlates with employee creativity at individual level. Moreover, this study found that individual followers’ entrepreneurial self-efficacy partially mediates the association between individual perceptions of entrepreneurial leadership and employee creativity, whereas team members’ entrepreneurial self-efficacy fully mediates the association between team members’ perceptions of supervisors’ entrepreneurial leadership and employee creativity. Further, this research demonstrates the role of team-level climate of support for innovation as a boundary condition that strengthens the effect of entrepreneurial leadership on individual entrepreneurial self-efficacy.
Originality/value
Considering entrepreneurial self-efficacy to be a type of entrepreneurial context-specific self-efficacy, this study presents one of the first empirical examples of the mediating function of entrepreneurial self-efficacy in the association between entrepreneurial leadership and employee creativity. Additionally, this research demonstrates the role of team-level climate of support for innovation as a boundary condition that strengthens the effect of entrepreneurial leadership on individual entrepreneurial self-efficacy. Further, this study provides a methodological contribution by simultaneously assessing all three variables of the mediation process at the individual and team levels: entrepreneurial leadership, entrepreneurial self-efficacy and employee creativity.

Purpose
There is growing interest among marketers in advertising and promoting their brands by adopting an online celebrity endorsement strategy. However, how online celebrities build their own brand equity and how online celebrity brand equity impacts fans’ purchase behavior have not been extensively researched in the extant literature. This paper aims to explore the factors that contribute to online celebrity branding and improving fans’ purchase intentions.
Design/methodology/approach
A survey and an experiment were conducted among consumers from the mainland of China. A total of 12 hypotheses were proposed to exam how self-congruity and virtual interactivity impact online celebrity branding and to explore the moderating role of perceived quality and product type.
Findings
This paper reveals that customers’ perceived self-congruity with online celebrities’ image and virtual interactivity positively impact the brand equity of online celebrities. Additionally, compared with virtual interactivity, the effect of customer perceived self-congruity on a brand is more significant. The brand equity of online celebrities thereby drives followers’ purchase intentions and the perceived quality of products positively moderates this relationship.
Originality/value
The research conclusions provide managerial implications for marketing practitioners for how to use human brands on social media platforms in the web 2.0 era and ultimately enhance consumer purchase intentions.
