Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to evaluate theoretically and experimentally the static and dynamic characteristics of a single‐phase claw‐pole motor using soft magnetic composite (SMC) for the stator core.

Design/methodology/approach

On the basis of the static characteristics, which are measured and obtained from a series of 3D FE magnetostatic solutions, the dynamic characteristics are simulated according to a proposed control strategy. The same strategy is tested in dSpace control environment. Apart from the evaluation of the prototype SMC motor, some study has been made in order to improve the existing motor design.

Findings

The static characteristics of the single‐phase claw‐pole motor have been modelled in 3D FE magnetostatic solver, where the rotor position and stator current have been changed. The characteristics compare well with the measurements, while the discrepancy with the cogging torque waveform needs further analyses and experiments to explain the real magnetization pattern of the plastic bounded ferrite magnet‐ring and the influence of magnetic hysteresis. The 3D FE magnetostatic optimization routine shows the maximum quantities for magnetic coupling and static core loss. Furthermore it is used to obtain the improved pole distribution so that the resting position of the unexcited motor co‐aligns at the position of the maximum electromagnetical torque. This is achieved by changing the angular width of claw‐poles. The specific output of the maximum coupling torque from the single‐phase claw‐pole motor can be increased from the recent 0.1 to 0.6 Nm/kg at a temperature rise of 60°. The simulations of dynamical characteristics show a good correlation with the experiments where the same control system in Simulink is applied to the prototype via dSpace. It is practically easier to implement a simple control strategy for the direct current controlled voltage source inverter. A more advantageous control system needs to be applied for the sampled current controller.

Research limitations/implications

The influence of the magnetization of a multi‐pole magnet ring is not considered while computing the static characteristics in 3D FE magnetostatic solver.

Practical implications

The evaluation of the realistic magnetization pattern in the magnet aggravates the proper theoretical evaluation of static characteristics.

Originality/value

The design of a small size powder core motor is faced with the complexity of evaluating properly the static characteristics, while the magnetization pattern is not exactly known. The broad search here is for an efficient tool to visualize the output of the 3D FE optimization for an improved design.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to develop a TiAlSiCN coating with high bonding and hardness, ultra-low friction and good lubrication characteristics, which provided an experimental basis for the surface modification of YT14 cemented carbide cutting tools.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, a TiAlSiCN coating was deposited on YT14 cemented carbide cutting tool through cathodic arc ion plating. The surface-interface morphologies, distributions of chemical elements, phases, bonding energy and surface roughness were analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy, respectively, and the coating the bonding strength were quantitatively characterized with a scratch.

Findings

The average COFs of the TiAlSiCN coating at 700°C, 800°C and 900°C were 0.68, 0.57 and 0.38, respectively, showing that the TiAlSiCN coating was an effective lubricant at a high temperature, and the wear rate of the coating increases with wear temperature. After wearing at 700°C, 800°C and 900°C, the Ti, Si and N elements form atom-poor regions, while Al forms an atom-rich region, showing that the oxides of Ti, Al and Si are formed to improve the wear resistance of the coating. The wear mechanism of TiAlSiCN coating at high temperatures was composed of abrasive wear and oxidation wear.

Originality/value

The friction-wear behaviors of TiAlSiN coating were investigated using an HT-1000-type high-temperature friction wear tester, and the worn tracks on the coatings were analyzed using an EDS plane scan, thus obtaining the wear mechanism of TiAlSiN coating.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine scaling algorithms in the description and modelling of power loss in soft magnetic composites (SMCs).

Design/methodology/approach

Three scaling algorithms are examined to determine the most appropriate description of power loss in magnetic composites. The scaling coefficients are estimated in such a way that all measurement data should be collapsed onto a single curve, given in the scaled coordinates. The coefficient estimation is based on a non-linear optimization using the generalized reduced gradient method. The obtained formulae are then used in the power loss modelling.

Findings

It is revealed that only two-component formulae are suitable for the scaling analysis of power loss because these allow obtaining of the collapse of measurement data.

Research limitations/implications

This study considers just one type of SMC (Somaloy 700). Further research will be devoted to the verification of the scaling approach to the power loss modelling for other types of magnetic composites.

Practical implications

The power loss is a basic property of soft magnetic materials, which determines their practical applications. The scaling approach to the power loss modelling gives quite simple models that require a reduced number of measurement data to estimate coefficients.

Originality/value

The scaling algorithms can be a useful tool in the analysis and designing of magnetic circuits made of SMCs.

Travel and tourism have had a long history in the Nordic countries, but research on tourism has a relatively short tradition in the region. Recently, academic interest in the Nordic tourism space has grown and diversified especially as a result of increasing numbers of academics and institutions involved with tourism geographies and studies and education in the region. The Nordic context has provided thematic focus areas for empirical studies that characterize tourism geographies in the region, with topics including nature-based tourism, utilization of wilderness areas, second-home and rural developments, impacts in peripheries, and tourism as a tool for regional development. In addition, there are emerging research themes outside of the traditional core topics, such as urban, events, and heritage tourism.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of marketing strategies on export ventures undertaken by micro and small enterprises (MSEs) established in emerging countries and in Brazil specifically. We aim to determine whether a direct relationship exists between marketing strategies and internationalization performance results and to evaluate the influence of entrepreneurial marketing (EM) on export marketing strategy (EMS) and performance. A conceptual model based on the work of Cavusgil and Zou (1994) is developed and used to analyze MSE characteristics (firm and products), EMS, EM, and export marketing performance. An empirical survey was conducted on 173 Brazilian MSEs across various sectors, and data analysis was performed using structural equation modeling. The results highlight the importance of marketing activities in shaping MSE export performance, mainly by adapting prices to targeted markets, thereby improving product competitiveness. The study also emphasizes the importance of company international competence (expertise) and EM as influencers of export performance. The study contributes to the field through its application of the EM construct, by adapting the conceptual MSE model and by filling empirical gaps knowledge. The results will guide MSE management strategies that will be critical to the Brazilian economy and to other emerging countries.

Abstract

This study investigates customer‐value based marketing activities in emerging or new fast‐growth ventures. A contextual analysis of interview data identified seven customer‐value based marketing activities actively pursued synergistically by fast growth firms: employee branding, target marketing, marketing planning marketing/market research, product differentiation via quality, relationship marketing, and guerrilla marketing. These elements form a complex web in which each marketing activity complements the other. There are three main implications: all marketing activities are intertwined, in line with marketing theory and practice associated with large firms; most marketing activities undertaken are low cost; and establishing a winning reputation is an important objective. CEOs associate reputation with brand building via employees.

Abstract

Depending on the research approach one uses, the development of particular bodies of knowledge over time is the result of a combination of agency, chance, opportunity, patronage, power, or structure. This particular account of the development of geographies of tourism stresses its place as understood within the context of different approaches, different research behaviors and foci, and its location within the wider research community and society. The chapter charts the development of different epistemological, methodological, and theoretical traditions over time, their rise and fall, and, in some cases, rediscovery. The chapter concludes that the marketization of academic production will have an increasingly important influence on the nature and direction of tourism geographies.
