Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the entropy generation in different nanofluids flow over a vertically moving rotating disk. Unlike the classical Karman flow, water-based nanofluids have various suspended nanoparticles, namely, Cu, Ag, Al2O3 and TiO2, and the disk is also moving vertically with time-dependent velocity.

Design/methodology/approach

The Keller box technique numerically solves the governing equations after reduction by suitable similarity transformations. The shear stress and heat transport features, along with flow and temperature fields, are numerically computed for different concentrations of the nanoparticles.

Findings

This study is done comparatively in between different nanofluids and for the cases of vertical movement of the disk. It is found that heat transfer characteristics rely not only on considered nanofluid but also on disk movement. Moreover, the upward movement of the disk diminishes the heat-transfer characteristics of the fluid for considered nanoparticles. In addition, for the same group of nanoparticles, an entropy generation study is also performed, and an increasing trend is found for all nanoparticles, with alumina nanoparticles dominating the others.

Originality/value

This research is a novel work on a vertically moving rotating surface for the water-conveying nanoparticle fluid flow with entropy generation analysis. The results were found to be in good agreement in the case of pure fluid.

Abstract

Purpose

The investigation of fluid flow over a rotating disk has been increasing due to the spread of machine technology. Because of this development, we scrutinized the Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of hybrid nanofluid caused by a decelerating rotating disk with Ohmic heating, Soret and Dufour effects. The disk's angular velocity is taken to be an inversely time-dependent linear function. Moreover, the temperature-dependent viscosity of hybrid nanofluid is incorporated in the present investigation. Methanol is considered as base fluid, while copper oxide (CuO) and magnesium oxide (MgO) are nanoparticles.

Design/methodology/approach

Estimated fundamental partial differential equations of flow problems are altered as a dimensionless system of ordinary differential equations using appropriate similarity transformation and solved using a numerical technique: BVP Midrich scheme in Maple software. The impression of emerging non-dimensional parameters is portrayed graphically. All outcomes are shown in the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles.

Findings

The developed flow problem involves a non-dimensional parameter (A) that reveals the deceleration of the disk. For larger values of A, the disk decelerates faster and for some fixed time, the fluid surrounding the disk revolves more rapidly than the disk itself. The radial velocity of fluid diminishes and axial velocity becomes uniform when the disk is subjected to wall suction velocity (B).

Originality/value

This analysis is significant in biomedical engineering, cancer therapeutic, manufacturing industries and nano-drug suspension in pharmaceuticals. The novelty of the current study is the hybrid nanofluid flow with Ohmic heating, Soret and Dufour effects on a decelerating rotating disk. To the best of the author's knowledge, no such consideration has been published in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

In this paper the effects of viscous dissipation and ohmic heating on the fluid flow and resulting heat and mass transfer caused by vertically moving rotating disk are explored with magnetic field acting perpendicular to disk rotation. The flow regime is also under the influence of Dufour and Soret effects.

Design/methodology/approach

An approach of similarity transformation is used to transform the governing set of equations into non-linear ordinary differential equations. Numerical simulations are carried out in Maple software to study the influence of incorporated non-dimensional parameters viz. disk movement parameter (−0.3 < S < 0.2), magnetic parameter (0.1 < M < 0.4), Eckert number (0.1 < Ec < 1), Schmidt number (0.1 < Sc < 1), Soret parameter (0.1 < Sr < 1) and Dufour number (0.1 < Du < 1) on velocity, temperature and concentration profiles.

Findings

The upward/downward motion of the disk along with rotation set up a three-dimensional flow over the disk surface and exerts the same effects as injection/suction through the wall. It is also observed that incorporated parameters along with disk movement greatly affect the flow regime and associated heat and mass transfer.

Originality/value

The present study examines the heat and mass transfer characteristics of incompressible Newtonian fluid over an impermeable rotating disk moving vertically. The effect of viscous dissipation and ohmic heating is considered. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, such consideration is yet to be published in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study aims to investigate the effect of radiation on the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of a viscous, electrically conducting Newtonian fluid over rotating disk moving upward/downward immersed in a porous medium, considering the Hall effect. The study is motivated by the various applications in the context of solar power technology, electric power generation, Hall accelerators, MHDs generators and other industrial areas when the fluid flow is subjected to the previously mentioned effects such as MHD, Hall effect and thermal radiation.

Design/methodology/approach

Suitable similarity transformations are employed to reduce the governing nonlinear partial differential equations into the nonlinear ordinary ones. The solutions of the reduced system are numerically obtained using the boundary value problem (BVP) Midrich scheme in Maple. The results are presented graphically for vertical disk movement, magnetic parameter, Hall current, Darcy parameter, thermal radiation and Schmidt number. Skin frictions, mass and heat transfer rates are numerically tabulated.

Findings

It is revealed that the vertical motion of the disk significantly boosts the radial and annular flows. Moreover, the Hall parameter has contrasting effects on velocity profiles for the range of magnetic field but temperature field is oblivious of this behavior. It is observed that heat and mass transfer considerably enhance along vertical disk movement. Also magnetic field, temperature ratio and radiation parameter significantly enhance the temperature field, while reaction rate parameter and Schmidt number decrease the concentration profile. The current model is calibrated in its reduced form to an already published literature with good correlation to ensure the numerical scheme's validity.

Abstract

Purpose

The present article aims to investigate the squeeze effects on hematite suspension-based curved annular plates with Rosensweig’s viscosity and Kozeny–Carman’s porous structure under the variable strong magnetic field and slip in the Shliomis model. The variable magnetic field is utilised to retain all magnetic elements within the model. The aforementioned mechanism would have the benefit of generating a maximal field at the system’s required active contact zone.

Design/methodology/approach

The Kozeny–Carman globular sphere model is used for porous facing. Rosensweig’s extension of Einstein’s viscosity is taken into consideration to enhance the fluid’s viscosity, and Beavers and Joseph’s slip boundary conditions are employed to assess the slip effect.

Findings

The pressure and lifting force under squeezing are computed through modification of the Reynolds equation with the addition of Kozeny–Carman’s model-based porosity, Rosensweig’s viscosity, slip and varying magnetic field. The obtained results for the lifting force are very encouraging and have been compared with Einstein’s viscosity-based model.

Originality/value

Researchers so far have carried out problems on lubrication of various sliders considering Einstein’s viscosity only, whereas in our problem, Rosensweig’s viscosity has been taken along with Kozeny–Carman’s porous structure model.

Abstract

Learning outcomes

The case study is designed to help students understand how the “growth at all costs” attitude can lead to compromised corporate governance in a start-up leading to disastrous implications for all the stakeholders. This case study aims to make students understand the components of the fraud triangle, the impact of financial fraud on various stakeholders, the role of venture capitalist (VC) investors and the importance of good corporate governance in start-ups. The case study presents an excellent opportunity for students to discuss the consequences of ignoring good governance in the pursuit of growth in a start-up. After analyzing the case study, the students shall be able to explain the concept of the fraud triangle and to be able to identify the motivation, opportunity and rationalization of financial irregularities in a start-up; analyze the impact of financial irregularities on various stakeholders; comprehend the business model of VCs and evaluate its influence on VC-funded start-ups; and appraise the importance of good corporate governance in start-ups.

Case overview/synopsis

The case study revolves around the confession of financial irregularities made by one of the cofounders of GoMechanic, a start-up headquartered in Gurugram, India. On January 18, 2023, Amit Bhasin confessed to financial irregularities in the company’s financial statements, leading to laying off 70% of the workforce of the company. GoMechanic had earlier raised close to US$62m [1] from maverick global investors including Sequoia Capital, Tiger Global, Orios Venture Partners and Chiratae Ventures, and was negotiating to raise Series D financing from the Japanese multinational SoftBank with aspirations to be a unicorn (start-up with a valuation of over $1bn). The confession led to a debate about the consequences of the “growth at all cost” culture being followed by start-ups as well as VCs. GoMechanic was not an isolated instance of a lack of governance in the start-ups. The confession had consequences not only for the GoMechanic but for the entire start-up ecosystem of India, which was the third largest in the world. Bhasin stated that the founders take full responsibility for the situation, and they were working on a plan which was most viable under the circumstances. However, it was not going to be easy to regain the confidence of the investors.

Complexity academic level

The case study is best suited for senior undergraduate- and graduate-level business school students and in executive education programs in courses such as corporate governance and ethics, private equity and entrepreneurial finance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the nature and extent of foodborne diseases in India due to chemical and microbial agents.

Design/methodology/approach

The scientific investigations/reports on outbreak of foodborne diseases in India for the past 29 (1980‐2009) years due to adulteration, chemical, and microbiological contamination have been reviewed. Reported scientific information on foodborne pathogens detected and quantified in Indian foods has also been reviewed.

Findings

A total of 37 outbreaks involving 3,485 persons who have been affected due to food poisoning have been reported in India. Although the common forms of foodborne diseases are those due to bacterial contamination of foods, however, higher numbers of deaths have been observed due to chemical contaminants in foods.

Originality/value

A national foodborne disease surveillance system needs to be developed in India in order to enable effective detection, control and prevention of foodborne disease outbreaks.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the traditional business communities and family businesses of India, their emergence and sustained growth.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors analyze the role of business communities in family businesses of India and identify business communities that have still sustained and marked a global presence.

Findings

Business communities such as Marwaris have the knack for business activities and are leaders of family businesses in India today, who have sustained their past success and continue to create new histories. Other traditional business communities such as Parsis, Sindhis, Chettiars and Gujarati banias have not been able to sustain much. Possible reasons were switching to white-collar jobs, taking up diplomacy and other professions, inter caste marriages, international migration in search of business and Indian government policies.

Research limitations/implications

This study provides a useful source of information for academics, policy-makers and economists.

Practical implications

Traditional business communities populate the list of family businesses that have marked their global presence. This paper identifies various factors that are responsible for the growth and sustainability of these business communities.

Social implications

The study clarifies the role of business communities in domestic economic development.

Originality/value

The paper explored traditional business communities of India and assessed their role in family businesses of India that currently mark a global presence.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to identify the relationship between employee-generated content (EGC) and firm-generated content (FGC) in the form of LinkedIn posts, employer brand perception, and the effect of employer's attractiveness and corporate reputation on this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

This study comprises two phases. In phase 1, the focus was on stimuli selection through an online questionnaire on favourability. In phase 2, for the main study, data were gathered through an online survey from 214 information technology (IT) employees via a survey. Multiple linear regression and mediation analyses were conducted.

Findings

The results show that EGC and FGC have a positive influence on employer brand perception, and the relationship is positively mediated by employer attractiveness and corporate reputation. These findings suggest that organizations can strategically use their own as well as employees' LinkedIn accounts, and encourage employee advocacy initiatives to attract new talent, enhance attractiveness and corporate reputation.

Originality/value

The study covers two different categories of content – employer and employee-generated – and examines both content types' influence on employer brand perception. It adds to the body of literature regarding employee branding and paves the way for further research in employee advocacy.

Case overview

On 20 May 2016, the Management team at Patanjali Ayurved Limited (PAL), an Indian fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) company, had assembled in their Haridwar office, India, to discuss their future growth plans. The team was in a celebratory mood, as their internal reports suggested the annual revenue forecasts for the year 2016-2017 to be INR 10bn, an increase of 100 per cent as compared to the previous fiscal year 2015-2016 that recorded annual revenues of INR 5bn. PAL incorporated in 2006 and co-founded by Acharya Balkrishna operated in four business segments of foods, personal care, home care and Ayurved products. The products sold under the brand name Patanjali were single-handedly promoted by Swami Ramdev (hereafter referred as Ramdev), a popular Yoga practitioner and preacher amongst the Indian masses, as well as PAL’s co-founder. Ramdev recommended PAL’s products in his yoga sessions on television and yoga shibirs which had led to huge positive “word-of-mouth” publicity for their brand Patanjali. Their fast-paced growth in less than a decade had generated a disruption in the Indian FMCG sector, resulting in a negative impact on the sales of established multinational corporations (MNCs) such as Colgate-Palmolive, Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), ITC Limited (ITC), besides the domestic players such as Dabur India Ltd. and Emami Ltd. This had led their FMCG competitors to launch plans to strengthen their product portfolios so as to provide a tough competition to PAL. The management team at PAL, though confident of achieving their annual revenue targets, were apprehensive of this new competition from the big players of the FMCG sector. Were they capable of continuing their success story? Going forward what strategic steps would ensure them a sustainable growth and a market leader position? The mood turned reflective as the team pondered on some of these questions.

The case is structured to enable discussion on: conducting and understanding a general environment analysis and industry and competitive analysis and critically evaluating the firm’s strategic positioning and scope in a competitive environment.
