Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to compare the mission statements of Indian and Singaporean firms in the healthcare sector, and define the main components of Indian and Singaporean mission statements.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was based on a network analytic approach and content analysis. The research was performed on 200 companies (100 Indian companies and 100 Singaporean companies). For each company, we searched for a mission statement published in the company website. Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) in Python programming language was utilized to obtain the differences in the components of mission statements between Indian and Singaporean firms.

Findings

The study results indicate a similarity and variation between Indian and Singaporean mission statements. Both countries are more concerned about patients, service, community, quality, and healthcare in their mission statements, but Indian mission statements emphasize quality, affordable price, and technology more than Singaporean firms. In contrast, Singaporean mission statements tend to highlight innovation and company value. This research will assist strategic managers in identifying the mission statement components and choosing the right strategy for the organization.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature and ethos theory by identifying and distinguishing the paramount differences between the Indian and Singaporean mission statement components in the healthcare sector.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to analyze, realize and identify the extent of research on financial literacy (FL) and to reveal the study trends, growth and evolution in the Scopus database from a bibliometric analysis. Principally, the primary purpose of this study is to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric review of studies focusing on the use, identification, network structure and conceptual structure of FL.

Design/methodology/approach

The most relevant articles were found using an electronic search. The studies that would be reviewed were sourced from the Scopus database. A total of 1,211 articles were found and refined to 768 papers between 1997 and 2021. Every composition has been analyzed in different dimensions such as co-authorship, co-citation, conceptual structure, co-word occurrence, trend topics analysis, thematic map, topic dendrogram, three field plot diagram and visualization analysis with the help of R programming language and VOSviewer software.

Findings

Motor themes, basic transverse, niche, and emerging and declining themes were identified using (Callon, 1991) a strategic thematic map. The analysis’s results showed that, over the past 20 years, FL literature has advanced remarkably. It also acts as a reference means for future researchers. This study adopted relational techniques such as co-word, co-author, co-citation analysis, bibliographic coupling and thematic map analysis revealing the emerging topics for future research. The relational approach indicates that “FL” and “human” are two central parts that connect to other frequently used words in the studies examined.

Research limitations/implications

The study deploys bibliometric analysis appropriate for deriving insights from the vast extant literature. However, a meta-analysis might offer deeper insights into specific dimensions of the research topic. It expands the previous literature and shows study topics that are more focused by examining the abstracts and contents of articles published in journals in different Scopus categories. For future researchers to derive a solid theoretical framework, a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis would be helpful. Science mapping for this study is limited to the Scopus database owing to its more comprehensive coverage of good-quality journals.

Practical implications

The authors offer suggestions for promising directions for future research that could address some of the inconsistencies found from the bibliometric analysis study.

Social implications

This study can help both budding and established researchers to find new research focus, relevant sources, and collaboration opportunities and make informed decisions. Findings related to evaluative and relational techniques can serve as helpful information for researchers who are new to the field.

Originality/value

It shows the indicators used to benchmark institutes, authors, journals or articles. The increase in researchers’ collaborative, multi-authored and interdisciplinary efforts also revealed an annual growth rate of 23.77%. Overall, this study enhanced the understanding of the FL phenomenon and provided an experience and interpret a wide range of publication- and citation-based statistics. This study contributes to understanding the collaborative networks of various researchers and institutions and the benefits/detriments of collaborating cross-disciplinary, internationally, or with industry or corporate institutions.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyse how financial literacy (FL) is conceptualised and operationalised in the Indian context.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) protocol. Thirty-six articles published between 2010 and 2020 were considered for analysis. The FL conceptualisation was examined based on knowledge, ability, skill, attitude and confidence elements. The FL operationalisation was analysed using the modified version of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 model for organising the domain for an assessment framework.

Findings

The findings indicate that, despite offering operationalisation details of the FL, 13 out of 36 studies did not include a conceptual definition of FL. Of the 23 studies that mentioned a conceptual definition, 87% are primarily focused on the “knowledge” element and only 39% have combined knowledge, ability/skill and attitude elements in defining FL. As in the developed countries, the Indian studies also preferred investment/saving-related contents in their FL measures. The volume of content focusing on the financial landscape is meagre amongst the FL measures used in India and developed countries. The survey instruments of most studies have been designed in the individuals’ context but have failed to measure the extent to which individuals apply the knowledge in performing their day-to-day financial transactions. Further, it was found that 20 out of 36 studies did not convert the FL level of their target groups into a single indicator or operational value.

Originality/value

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that explores the FL’s assessment practices in India. Further, this study offers new insights by comparing the contents of FL measures used in Indian studies with those used in developed countries.

Abstract

Purpose

Through bibliometric analysis, the study intends to reveal the evolution of the trends in the Scopus database, the scope of research and the connection between technology and entrepreneurship.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a comprehensive science mapping approach, integrating network visualisation to map research groups, bibliometric analysis to measure publication trends and thematic analysis to identify overarching themes. This study uses a thorough technique to examine the complex interaction between technology and entrepreneurship from 2000 to 2023. The collection includes information from various sources, creating a corpus of 2,207 documents. These sources include 698 scholarly journals, books and other publications.

Findings

According to the report, the interest in technology and entrepreneurship is expanding. The three nations conducting the most study on this subject is the USA, the UK and Italy. Some of the top writers in this area include James A. Cunningham, Alison N. Link and David B. Audretsch.

Research limitations/implications

The study found possibilities and problems associated with the interaction between technology and entrepreneurship. Additionally, the study found several research holes in this area. The study also noted some research gaps in this field, including those related to the sustainability of society and the environment, the effects of entrepreneurship on inequality and the difficulties faced by entrepreneurs in underdeveloped nations.

Practical implications

This study thoroughly overviews the business and technology sectors. It outlines some of the difficulties that must be overcome whilst identifying the main research trends in this field. Researchers, decision-makers and businesspeople interested in using technology for entrepreneurial endeavours can all benefit from the study’s findings.

Social implications

This study’s dataset’s scope, which might not include all pertinent publications, is one of its limitations. Nevertheless, the results add to a thorough picture of the state of the profession and recent developments. This study’s insights are valuable for researchers, policymakers and entrepreneurs interested in leveraging technology for entrepreneurial pursuits.

Originality/value

The research points to a number of directions that need more inquiry, such as in-depth studies into the social and environmental implications of technology-driven entrepreneurship and methods to combat inequality.

Abstract

Purpose

Pusher configured turbo-prop aircraft receive inadequate ram air cooling due to the lack of propeller slipstream, particularly during ground operations. However, flow entrainment can be exploited to a greater extent by placing the oil-cooler duct close to downstream of the propeller at a suitable radial location. But this method has a detrimental effect on the propeller thrust. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the results of numerical simulations carried out to simulate the performance of the propeller with and without oil cooler.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations are carried out to simulate the propeller in a rotating domain using an unstructured grid. A computational fluid dynamics solver is put forward to analyze the effect of thrust loss by solving 3D Navier-Stokes equations using a second-order upwind finite-volume scheme. In this study, the impact of thrust loss incurred in the propeller flow field with and without oil cooler duct for three different locations at various rotational speeds is carried out to assess the propeller performance and to identify the optimum position to get a sufficient mass flow rate.

Findings

The findings from this study are simulated thrust values of an uninstalled five-bladed propeller of light transport aircraft (LTA) match well with original equipment manufacturer propeller thrust data. The tip speed velocities simulated for different operating conditions are in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. The influence of oil-cooler effect on the propeller flow field is less in low velocity to high-velocity operating condition due to flow transition from laminar to turbulent. The presence of the oil cooler, which influences the thrust loss, is studied at propeller upstream and downstream locations in detail for 30%, 40% and 50% of propeller radius cases.

Research limitations/implications

Simulations with finer and structured hexa grids can be applied to this problem to get closer results and save solver time as future work.

Practical implications

The recommended system is installed in the production standard aircraft of LTA. After installation oil cooler performance is better compared to the previous arrangement.

Originality/value

Research work about pusher aircraft is very limited. The problem addressed in this study is unique which resolves the major issue of pusher aircraft. This work highlights the difficulty involved in LTA engine oil cooling, and solution methodologies are also provided. Numerical simulation with oil-cooler assembly is a new area of research that gave the solution for this oil-cooling issue through various oil-cooler case studies.

Purpose

Eri is a short-stapled fibre that possesses an excellent soft feel and warmness to the wearer. Investigation of thermal comfort and moisture properties of Eri silk fabric provides the enhanced commercial scope for Eri silk-based clothing.

Design/methodology/approach

To examine the impact of process factors on thermal and moisture properties, three different single knit Eri silk structures were made, each with a different loop length and yarn count. Three different linear densities of Eri silk spun yarn (15, 20 and 25 tex) were selected. Three distinct knitted constructions, including plain jersey, popcorn and cellular blister, were created, along with two different loop lengths.

Findings

The novel cellular blister structure has shown appreciable thermal comfort properties than the other two structures. Yarn fineness and loop length were significant with most of the thermal comfort properties.

Research limitations/implications

In recent times the Eri silk production is completely domesticated, so the new demand can easily be met by the producers. This research will create a new scope for Eri silk fibres in sportswear and leisure wear.

Originality/value

This study was conducted to explore the influence of knit structure, loop length and yarn count on the thermal comfort properties of the clothing.

Abstract

Purpose

Through this study, four different types of woven fabric structures were created by using cotton/banana blends with a 70:30 ratio by varying the weaving specifications. This study aims to investigate the comfort and mechanical properties of these woven materials.

Design/methodology/approach

Taguchi L16 experimental design (5 factors and 4 levels) with response surface methodology tool was used to optimize mechanical and comfort characteristics. The yarn samples used in this study are cotton/banana with a blend ratio of 70:30. Fabric type (A), grams per square metre (GSM; B), yarn count (C), fabric thickness (D) and cloth cover factor (E) are the chosen process characteristics.

Findings

The highest tensile strength and tearing strength of the cotton/banana blended fabric samples were obtained as 326.3 N and 90.3 k.gf/cm, respectively. Similarly, the highest thermal conductivity and overall moisture management capacity values were found to be 0.6628 and 3.06 W/mK X10−4, respectively. The optimized process parameters for obtaining maximum mechanical properties were using canvas fabric structure, 182 GSM, 36s Ne yarn count, 0.48 mm fabric thickness and 23.5 cloth cover factor. Similarly, the optimized process parameters for obtaining maximum comfort properties were achieved using a twill fabric structure, 182 GSM, 32s Ne yarn count, 0.4 mm fabric thickness and 23 cloth cover factor.

Originality/value

In contrast to synthetic fabrics, banana fibre and its blended materials are significant ecological solutions for apparel and functional clothing. Products made from banana fibre are a sustainable and green alternative to conventional fabrics. Banana fibre obtained from the pseudostem of the plant has an appearance similar to ramie and bamboo fibres. Numerous studies showed that banana fibre could absorb significant moisture and be spun into yarn through ring and rotor spinning technology. On the other hand, this fibre can be easily combined with cotton, jute, wool and synthetic fibre. The present utilization of pseudostem of banana plant fibre is very minimal. This type of research improves the usability of bananas their blended fabrics as apparel and functional wear.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present the numerical study on supersonic jet mixing characteristics of the co-flow jet by varying lip thickness (LT). The LT chosen for the study is 2 mm, 7.75 mm and 15 mm.

Design/methodology/approach

The primary nozzle is designed for delivering Mach 2.0 jet, whereas the secondary nozzle is designed for delivering Mach 1.6 jet. The Nozzle pressure ratio chosen for the study is 3 and 5. To study the mixing characteristics of the co-flow jet, total pressure and Mach number measurements were taken along and normal to the jet axis. To validate the numerical results, the numerical total pressure values were also compared with the experimental result and it is proven to have a good agreement.

Findings

The results exhibit that, the 2 mm lip is shear dominant. The 7.75 mm and 15 mm lip is wake dominant. The jet interaction along the jet axis was also studied using the contours of total pressure, Mach number, turbulent kinetic energy and density gradient. The radial Mach number contours at the various axial location of the jet was also studied.

Practical implications

The effect of varying LT in exhaust nozzle plays a vital role in supersonic turbofan aircraft.

Originality/value

Supersonic co-flowing jet mixing effectiveness by varying the LT between the primary supersonic nozzle and the secondary supersonic nozzle has not been analyzed in the past.

Purpose

In the past decade, the biopolymeric properties of chitosan (CH) have been largely exploited for various applications. This paper aims to study the use of CH in its nanoform, i.e. as nanofibers blended with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for various antimicrobial applications in detail. In particular, their ability toward bacterial growth inhibition, in vitro drug release and their biocompatibility toward tissue growth have been investigated in detail.

Design/methodology/approach

Electrospinning technique was adapted for depositing CH/PVA blended nanofilms on the silver foil under optimized conditions of high voltage. Three different concentrations of blended nanofiber samples were prepared and their antimicrobial properties were studied.

Findings

The bead diameter and average diameter of blended nanofibers increase with CH concentration. Antibacterial activity increases as CH concentration increases. Increased hydrophilicity in CH-enriched samples contributes to a higher drug release profile.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, chick chorioallantoic membrane assay analysis has been carried out for the first time for CH/PVA films which shows that CH/PVA blends are biocompatible. CH after being converted as nanoparticles exhibits higher drug release rate by in vitro method.
